@@LordFirekaze I had an English teacher in the year 2000 that was smart enough to use Pac to get through to us. When the topic of poetry came up, we all ignored her. She knew that 2Pac was a favorite rapper for majority of the class. The poetry she chose was "a rose that grew out of concrete." We were all kids that had major behavior issues, or came from broken/abusive homes, and she knew that specific piece of poetry would hit home. As someone that has made a pretty good life for myself (job, family, life in general...) this teacher doesn't know the impact it had. I remember it 22 years later, like it was yesterday. Good teaching, and amazing poetry!
He was a prophet 💯 there was a lot more to him and he seemed to have premonitions I dunno he was just so different trying to push a positive message mostly anyways. RIP 2pac hell always live on
Tupac's mother has a great story also. She was a Black Panther who defended herself against government charges and won. Though she had her struggles, she was an amazing woman. RIP.
… not to mention his Panther godmother was also charged for a different political crime, fled to Cuba. Free to this day. - political asylum. Now she was a true hog - a real frontline fighter down with the cause.
My oldest son played this son for me when I came home for rehab in 1995. October 5, I will be 30 years clean and sober. I love Tupac music he's a poetic genius.
Yeah he gave a greater review. He complemented PAC but it was like he showed compassion for moms too. Made me feel that he also appreciates his wife for bringing his son into this world. I look at things in a deep way at times. Great job Pops! Thanks for putting dad onto this type of art young man.
I'm crying just off his appreciation for the time he's spending with his son, his appreciation for the music, and his ability to articulate just how the music made him feel. It was a "gorgeous" song. Couldn't have said it better Dad. This was an amazing share!! Thank you guys!!
as a grown ass man, i cant hear this song without shedding a tear, coming from a single parent household my mom is all we ever had. she worked long hours in a factory in downtown. i would wait outside and look at every bus pass by hoping my mom was on it. 8pm everyday. shed come home and still cook dinner. Much love to all the moms out there, believe me as men you ladies are our inspiration.
This is such a beautiful snapshot of the human experience. Made me tear up seeing your dad tear up. This is what music is supposed to represent emotions and feelings that cross generations and cultures.
This song gives me chill to this day, I grew up in the 90s and we lived in a rough neighborhood “the hood” and I had this neighbor who would lift weights outside to Tupac almost every morning……so some day I would wake up to him literally……but when I heard this song …whew…like O said …chills
For the Father to openly cry in front of his son and look him in the eye while expressing himself...WOW if more fathers were this vulnerable and present and willing to honour/live up to that role in their children's life's especially their son's... just imagine what the world would look like...as a male and music lover thank you for this video experience 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾!!!
YES! You're spot on with this comment. TO THE DAD: I appreciate you and your emotional availability to your son in this moment. I see your imprint on your son just in his mannerisms and demeanor. His calmness speaks of the work you've done Brother. I applaud you.
It's because his sons favourite father and son activity is to get his dad in a headlock every night, that's why he's really crying just doesn't want to tell his son he dislikes that game
As a father, this resounds with me. I try n be sure to show my son that I am not perfect/ all powerful. I’m human and make mistakes. But I really do try
Lost my mom December 24 2019. She was amazing. Heard this shortly after she passed. I’ve heard it many times growing up in 90’s but when the lyric “there ain’t a woman alive that could take my momma’s place” broke me. Just typing that brought a tear in my eye. If your mom is still here, give her a call. We aren’t promised tomorrow so let her know you love her today.
I was in prison and it was lock down. We only had the radio playing for hours. Dear Mama came on and I felt like crying. I looked around and saw literally everyone else tearing up, if not, burying their face in the pillow to hide their tears. I felt like we all had a story and realized that we're all human no matter what we did to get there. All of us shared a moment and were all equal for that few minutes. I can't hear it without crying to this day. Respect ✊🏾
When I was locked up in county jail we NEVER had music except on holidays they'd be nice and play the radio. Those were the best days and the whole cell block would be singing along. No fights that day
I'm 55, and a white woman. I was a single mother in the 90's, raising three children completely on my own without any support from anywhere, living in public housing and supporting all four of us on $13 an hr. It was rough. This song particularly, helped me get through those years, knowing I was seen and understood so accurately, and appreciated. Tupac was an amazing man aside from his music, well ahead of the consciousness of that era, and even to this day. Much more advanced and elevated in his Soul, like Prince. I will forever and ever hold this man in my heart for all the strength he gave me through his music for a lot of trials and tribulations in a socioeconomic trench. I felt comforted by the lyrics, the beats, the message.....there will never, ever, ever, ever be another Tupac. I hope he really is in Cuba living his life in Peace, but then again....maybe he is in another dimension far away from this nonsense called 'humanity'. Love you forever Pac.
I love his father’s open mindedness to music, and the fact that his son is comfortable sharing his music is very special. Thank you for sharing your father with the world.
Parents fighting addiction but doing their best, children loving their parents thru their mistakes...sung it to my mom as a child. Still listen after her death 🙏🏽💜
Tupac was my mom's favorite rapper and one of his biggest fans . She passed away in 2020 from complications from Covid. This was of her favorite songs from Pac. Much love and respect to you, your dad, and family.
Your mom had great taste, I’m also one of the biggest Tupac fans, still listening to his music, watching his movies, music videos and reading his poetry. Condolences for your precious mom….
In 2009, the song was added to the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress, who deemed it a work that is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States."[3] In a press release, the organization called the song "a moving and eloquent homage to both the murdered rapper's own mother and all mothers struggling to maintain a family in the face of addiction, poverty and societal indifference."
I'm 60 & hearing this for the first time too. Trying to keep it together but failing. 2pac is an amazing artist! My mom was schizophrenic so I had my own struggles. I know what it is to finally realize her strength in such a hard life. I am expanding so much, so late in life, but expansion is never a bad thing.
Tupac Shakur wasn’t just a rapper he was a poet that told stories not just about his experiences but the “black” experience. He was the balance music needed. R.I.P. to the king 🖤🤎
I feel like all rap is a form of poetry but yes imo he’s was a poet first and foremost before a musician, besides all the many reasons I wish he were still here but I think he would have done more acting an branched out into artistic areas that were not “ acceptable activities “ for rappers in the 90s
Your pops getting emotional shows that he's reminiscing on the times his mom was there for him through any hardship. Stay close with your parents young man, they're making your life as easy as possible because they know what it's like when life gets too difficult. Beautiful.
I can't listen to that song without shedding tears because I can relate. I was in and out of jail, selling drugs since I was 15, then began to use them by 17 and (after a long fight with addiction, incarceration and (everything that comes with it) I got clean 10 yrs later. By then, my younger brother of 11 yrs was doing the same shit only worse and all 3 of us boys had put our single mother thru hell and yet, she was the most selfless person I've ever known the entire time! After my brother put her through over 10 yrs of heartache and constant worries, I was able to buy, gut and remodel a little 2 bedroom 1 bath Condo for her to retire a little early in. Everything was brand new with tags on all the appliances, new kitchen cabinets, granite, floors, doors (literally everything from the drywall in) and she was so excited! One day I was finishing up the bathroom walls and she was supposed to come over and do some touch up in the bedrooms because she wanted to be a part of the whole thing and she was really good at diffrent types of DIY improvements. But, , she didn't show up and after I called her a few times throughout the day without an answer, I had a pit in my stomach and went to her apartment to find her cold and stiff. She died shortly after she told me she was coming over the day before (according to the time of death.) I never got to see the smile on her face when she would've moved in and seen the finished product 2 wks later! She was classy, looked like a million bucks (even though she didn't have 2 nickles to rub together) but, you'd never know that and she'd go without to provide for us.
I was just having a Pac or Biggie convo with someone who brought it up. I overall like Pac more, and Pac sold more. Hehe. I know a lot of details about him. Supposedly he is still alive, and the radio announcement of him dying was to throw others off, as well his family and whatnot have you say a doc is coming out to prove he's alive. #90sKid #BornIn89
"Dear Mama" was one of 25 recordings selected for preservation at the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress in 2010, making it the third hip hop song to do so, following tracks by Public Enemy and Grandmaster Flash. The Library of Congress has called the song "a moving and eloquent homage to both the murdered rapper's own mother and all mothers struggling to maintain a family in the face of addiction, poverty and societal indifference."

Dad in the video, never apologize for being a real man and father in front of us. Your emotion is warranted and refreshing to see in a world that has largely told men they can’t cry. Please continue to be you and show your son and everyone watching that this is manhood too. Tupac is incredible beyond words. I hope you’ll also watch some of his interviews as well to get to know the man behind the music. He was a revolutionary much like Bob Marley and many others. He was extremely gifted and intelligent, passionate, explosive and so many other things wrapped up in one human being.
Thank you!! I'm a male raised by a single mom, and I cry so often. If something touches my soul, either in a good way or bad way, I'm gonna show it. Masculine egoism is cringe anyway.
@@YzaekPark I don’t remember asking for your opinion. Smart people know that nobody man or woman should cry over everything. “Your emotion is warranted” was your first clue that this is already understood by me. And it is a part of true manhood to express ANY emotion you are feeling, including those that induce tears. I couldn’t care less if you agree. I for one will not raise yet another emotionally impotent man that can’t cope with their feelings in healthy ways because no one allowed them space to. Seek therapy if you need it.

Your mistaken way of thinking how men have to be is in fact what causes them to suffer more than they already do. And don't worry about me, ma'am, I already took therapy for depression and anxiety, in fact all people end up needing therapy and those who think they don't, are the ones who end up needing it the most. Believe me, it's horrible to feel weak and cry uncontrollably because that's what the uninformed ladies advise young people like me to do, which is what should be done, how ridiculous. I remember hearing this song for the first time back in 95. I was 16 years old and my mother was very sick. I can’t explain how much this song meant to me. I took care of my mom for the next 3 years while she struggled in and out of the hospital till she passed away in January of 1999. I love you Momma!! ♥️♥️
I remember driving home from work in 95 listening to this song for the first time when I was a young 19 year old (sheltered white girl). The sun was setting in the city of Grand Rapids, MI where they never played black music before in Western conservative MI until around that year and I remember it so vividly. I was tearful and bought the "tape" that week. I never imagined that I'd be playing that same song to my own kids raising them as a single mom trying to do the best I could with no family or help from anyone. As a mother, you try your best with what you have been given and you pray your kids will forgive you and realize without a doubt they were and always will be loved. His lyrics are heartfelt speaking the reality of how hard it can be raising kids but in the end, LOVE truly is and always be the ONLY thing that matters. Thank you for honoring this beautiful song and the legendary Tupac.
It’s so refreshing to see your dad being open to even listen to rap music. Some people automatically dismiss it without even listening to one song. Good music is good music no matter what the genre is. But many people get stuck in certain genres without taking the time to even listen to other music. Yes there are a lot of rap songs that are crap. But those songs are just rushed out to the public quickly to make a quick buck. But some songs like Dear Mama by Tupac are deep songs and if you only take the time to listen to the words, you’ll understand how amazing these songs are. But like your father said there are all kinds of rap songs out there. Many of them now are party, shake your ass to them don’t even care about the lyrics songs. People don’t care they just wanna have a good time. Thanks to your dad for being so open minded and taking the time to listen. Good music brings all kinds of people together.
So true! I’m not a fan of jazz (I find it a bit all over the place and stressful), but if someone tells me they have a jazz song they love I will give it a listen and be curious. To be open to music is a good thing because you never know what you might miss out on.

Love this channel & your relationship! Thanks for The Frontroom.
A little background for your father and you to explore...Tupac's mother was Afeni Shakur. She was a Black Panther activist. Read her book. She named Tupac after a revolutionary leader by the name of Tupac Amaru from Peru. Tupac grew up as a young activist. He was an avid reader and a young performer in acting. Often times record labels will push black artists to develop a more edger gangster persona to sell records. Sadly rappers with a more poetic and conscious message are forced to "dumb it down" and play a stereotype to keep their contracts.
Socially, politically, and artfully conscious. Must be sharply pointed, because we can be conscious of anything. That word is not an automatic positive, though we assume.

Kudos to your dad for not only understanding but “feeling” the music as Tupac intended it to be felt. Goes to show how universal music truly is…Great stuff
Man, I was so lucky my teenage years took place during the '90s. The music from the generations leading up to the 90s had great bands, that many artists drew inspiration from. The '90s was a time when the music scene gave us hip hop aka rap. Where stories were being told from the perspective of the artists. Hip-hop artists showed us the inequalities between what the media told us about those living on the fringes of our society. And the factual reality of how people truly are living. Tupac stood out with a hand of artists who could paint a picture of these indifferences in one's mind with his lyrics.
Reminds me of my father. We sit down every chance we get and listen to music. My father raised me to be strong but my heart to be soft. I love my father this video reminds me of that special bond a son and father have. This is what we all need no matter what your color is and this is what the government stole from the African family. So much pain and hurt in this song it moves my soul and makes me proud that even tho I’m Caucasian I have African family and that we all started at home to make the difference. Let’s send this message in hopes to heal the African family and give their fathers back to them.
@@radicalred474 you blamed the government huh? you keep believing the bs you just said about black fathers, we are definitely in our childrens lives, but the media that look like you dont want to show that. if you want to blame somebody, try systemic racism, redlining, jim crow laws, sundown towns, non equal opportunity employment, and guess who came up with that?..and i can go on and on why black fathers was absent, but you wouldnt like it though..and i definitely know that yte fathers are absent too, so how about you heal yourself, we are just fine.
Soon as the song started playing I started crying. I saw my mom going through a lot growing up, she died at 35. I used to be so angry at some of her choices but as an adult I understand her so much more now
God bless and keep you and everyone particularly responding to your comment. I lost my mom in '94 to HIV/AIDS. I was only 25 when she left us... never got to have any bonding time with her as an adult because of her illness - not much downtime to go out or even just play a board game or watch a movie together. It's funny that this video and your comment popped up today a I'm just kinda recuperating from a depressive bout triggered by two of my good friends' moms dying. The lyrics to this song resonate so deeply for me everytime I hear it and I think for everyone with a mom they love - rich or poor or whatever - if they listen to it will love it. In these days of questionable content in our music this song really stands out. I think 100 years from now, when humanity looks for the greatest songs of that 90s era, this will be in the top 5 somewhere.
The fact that his life was stopped at 25 just shows us how ahead of his time Tupac actually was. His songs are not meant to be listened to and nod your head... they're meant to be felt, understood. Pac is truly the greatest!!
I was 16 when both Big and Pac were killed. At the time my little ignorant ass really thought that 24 & 25 years old really was so much older than me. Now I'm 42. They were just kids.
Popped up into my algorithm. And I love this. Tupac would be smiling watching you two do this. Watching how your father is affected by this beautiful and deep song. Real. They took him from us. But he lives on because his music is immortal. ❤
Brenda’s Got a Baby is another one that will blow your dad’s mind, especially when you consider how old 2pac was when he released it. Definitely ahead of his time and truly missed❤️

A Rose that grew out of Concrete
Respect ✊🏾

Well said. I was thinking the same thing.
Yeee.

I was just having a Pac or Biggie convo with someone who brought it up. I overall like Pac more, and Pac sold more. Hehe. I know a lot of details about him.

I for one will not raise yet another emotionally impotent man that can’t cope with their feelings in healthy ways because no one allowed them space to. Seek therapy if you need it.
@@GoodMomBeauty You don't ask me and I don't fkn care. Was my opinion and I put on YT when I want it. You understand? Mucho entender? No?

_"I couldn’t care less if you agree"_ the feeling is mutual lady.
_"I for one will not raise yet another emotionally impotent man that can’t cope with their feelings in healthy ways"_ you aren't the standard-bearer of anyone, don't give yourself powers that don't correspond to you.

I feel Dad. 😢My brother passed away in 2014 but this was his song. His challenges were relatable and he would play this song all of the time. It is hands down one of the classics. I listen to it when I feel down because it aids my mood for positivity, understanding, and acceptance. I believe it was a gift to society from Tupac. His vulnerability transcends. Same as Dad here.
She changed his name to Tupac Shakur
Socially, politically, and artfully conscious. Must be sharply pointed, because we can be conscious of anything. That word is not an automatic positive, though we assume.

Facts he seems like a genuine dude,.. who is embarking on the journey from the first time
Man, I was so lucky my teenage years took place during the '90s.
Same, the 90s had some of the best music ever! I’m a metal/grunge type,a friend played Tupac for me and I was like sold! He was a true wordsmith
Bro, make sure you cherish your father! Not only is he willing to open his mind to hip hop, he’s also a super intelligent dude!

I think 100 years from now, when humanity looks for the greatest songs of that 90s era, this will be in the top 5 somewhere.
