      @@cliffh.2432 Usually when people ask if an artist wrote a song, they mean did it come from the artist's mind or is it a cover song? And I would claim it was partially written bc she said her band would improvise over that groove during rehearsals. This is way too clean to be totally done on the spot

    • @cliffh.2432
      @cliffh.2432 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pmcate2 Makes sense, but the story I’ve read over the years from her and you can Google to confirm, they played the music that was used but she would riff/freestyle off the top about different topics with that same music in different sessions, so while they did use that music to do freestyles, the topic was one of many types of freestyles over that same music, but Tyrone was the freestyle that day. She says when she heard the band start playing the music, she knew it was the same music she riffs on, so she riffed. She stated the in many interviews that it was an actual freestyle, off the top. She was having fun and it turned into one of her biggest hits. Hope that helps. To be honest we will never know, I’m going off of years of her interviewing about the topic. You’re right though, the reason it has been a topic over the years is because people can’t believe it was a freestyle.

    The Mama’s Gun review was GREAT!! I really enjoyed all of it, even pops getting emotional on Orange Moon which is easily my very close second favorite joint on the album (Green Eyes being the first). What a thorough and thoughtful review for what I consider to be Erykah’s best work (Although ‘New Amerykah’ isn’t too far behind) and one of my all time favorite albums of any artist. Erykah is one of the greatest of our time. She’s such an amazing artist. Her first two albums could be considered neo-soul but on a grand scale, her music can’t be categorized. She’s just…different. And it’s awesome. One song I’d strongly suggest is “Telephone” off the New Amerykah album. It’s a song she wrote to and for J Dilla after he passed away. Beautiful song. Have your tissue ready, pops.
    I’d love to see y’all review a Jill Scott album as well. Words & Sounds vol. 2 or 3 would be great. Who is Jill Scott would be great as well. A totally different sound and vibe from Erykah though the same genre as Erykah’s first two albums. Still, great great great albums by Jilly from Philly. You won’t be disappointed.

    Honestly, Jill Scott singing strange fruit was a POWERFUL and emotional performance. It gave me chills and made you feel the pain.

    I just love these reactions ❤ fun fact, she was pregnant with Seven here. 🥰 And there was no writing here…this was fully improvised and freestyled.

    Cool review but you guys talked through the Grande Finale and most EPIC part of the video. 😬🤦🏽‍♀️ lol
    A suggestion would be to pause the video if you just absolutely must talk. Lol The moments you think are brief and inconsequential are often anything But.
    I've noticed you've started doing that quite a bit... the talking during the performance. ;) Please - just pause it even if you believe that you're only communicating for seconds.
    You killed the vibe... what we all were waiting on you fellas to witness as we did the first time. ;)
    Ciao

    Thanks for reacting to one of my favourite songs of one of my favourite artists 🖤
    I got so exited, when she sung it on the first concert I visited of her, and I screamed like crazy, when I heard the melody starting. Than I realised, that it wasn’t the biggest hit in Germany 😅
    Not many people got exited too😂

    There is a studio version at the end of the Baduizm Live album. It has an extra verse and the part about the cousins is a little bit different.
    I like singing this at karaoke, even though I don't sing well. 😂 I love when it's the long version. So many ppl get lost when that extra verse comes in. One time this guy was going word for word with me. I loved it!

    She ad-libbed the whole song, she a master class in soul music and I think saying neo soul kinda pigeon holds her in a particular category but she too universal for 1 specific music genre! She is just hands down amazing at her craft and she "sensitive about her shit" lol.
