- Selling & marketing your birdhouses - Pt 2
Birdhouses are fun to build and more fun to create. I am an artist first and craftsperson second. It is the idea of creating that drives me me to learn different techniques in building.
In this video I talk about selling and marketing my birdhouses. This can be utilized for any craft or art. Don't sell yourself short and find the right market your your items.
This particular birdhouse started creation when a friend gave a a half log of cedar. It was cut off from a project on their log cabin. I cut sections, that I call "mini log slabs" from this chunk of wood. From there I created a face for the birdhouse. Generally, I start by making a birdhouse face. This face drives the entire project forward and allows me to see what other materials will be best suited for the top. In this case I used Spalted maple and made it with the same process of cutting mini slabs. I have some videos on how I make those. The nesting box is made from any type of material as long as it is wide enough to attach a base or bottom. The bottom is screwed into the sides so it is removable and can allow for cleaning.
The back side of the house is the next creative part and in this case it is made from another book matched mini slab red cedar. Inn the end I added a thick leather etching with a Grizzley bear on it. I incorporate many of the items that I like such as etchings, stones, antler sections and other organic things. Keep it interesting if you are interested in lying art.

As long as what you put on is on the outside of the house, it’s ok.
I like your approach to the build(s). And yes, you need to be paid and paid well, your creativity warrants $$$. Urethane dried is not a problem as far as I am concerned. Thanks for the video, I am enjoying the 3 part series.

Melanie, Thank you for responding to my message and I understand shipping is inevitable. I just opened an Etsy Store and I can see they calculate the shipping and add it to the price but it doesn't seem to be nearly enough to cover the cost! Inevitably it is you who has to get a box, fill it with your product and packaging and take it to your shipping partner. What service do you partner with to get your best shipping cost?
Melanie, I love your work and appreciate the knowledge you have shared. I have been making birdhouses also which I hope to sell on Etsy. The thing is that I took one of them which I would sell for $80 and found out the shipping cost would be around $40 inside my own state and around $80 to ship accresos the country. Having seen your work I know your pieces are pretty large and heavy so how do you ship them with out costing you an arm and a leg? Thanks, Jim
Ok, just watched video #2 ...very good, the woods that you are using are absolutely beautiful, don't know we're your from but here in Indiana I haven't seen some of those woods, or I just need to pay a lot more attention...lol...good job

This creative project is highly produced and artistic but not good for adult bird, eggs or chicks. Beside the misplaced access hole (it should be at the top of the box not the bottom), no ventilation, no access door to clean and inspect, in part two the builder stains and vanishes the project. Birders will never paint or stain boxes. It appears as creative as the poster is he may not have a birding background. It's too bad because this project should be an example of how to build a box that is safe for adults, eggs and chicks as well as priced to sell for a profit..
