  • To make this birdhouse I used olive wood and apricot wood. I also used my hook tool for the first time, in order to hollow the endgrain core of the house.
    Tools and materials I propose:
    Lathe: amzn.to/2yq4bMI
    Wood turning tools set: amzn.to/2pH5K59
    Forstner bit set: amzn.to/2A5NPLq
    Caliper set: amzn.to/2K0X8mF
    Cordless drill: amzn.to/2A6fTOy
    Chuck kit: amzn.to/2NLQG55

    Very nice Dimitri, I have made a decorative one; smaller than my fist but you have inspired me to make one bigger that a bird can actually use as a nesting box. Thank you

    Such a nice build! I hope to try it myself soon. One thought...did you know that putting a little stick on the front of a birdhouse can let predatory birds steal eggs from the nicer, more musical ones?

    If this is a bird house that is meant for a real bird, how does the bird catch up to the swinging thing in the wind ? Looks nice..

    Идея отличная. Но есть и минусы: леток находится очень низко. По поводу обработки древесины предлагаю посмотреть видео "Токарь-надомник" Возможно такое видео в дальнейшем поможет в работе. Удачи!

    Birdhouses are species specific. You can find online what type of bird will nest in what size of a birdhouse. Keep these things in mind when planning your birdhouse. Either make the roof or turn the bottom to be removable. Birdhouses must be cleaned out yearly. Plenty of ventilation!! Drill vent holes in the bottom and just below where your roof connection stops. Eliminate the perch. A place to land is just what predatory birds need to be able to kill and eat the young. I have found that a birdhouse swaying in the wind is not the desirable place to nest. If possible, I would choose a solid and accessible mounting spot. Happy Birding!!

    Would you have made the barrel the same style if you did not have your new Hook Tool? Is there another tool you would have used? Very nice job indeed! Much appreciated for sharing.

    • @ScrapwoodCity
      @ScrapwoodCity  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would have used a bowl gouge as much as I could reach and then finish it with a scraper! But I really don't have another proper tool for deep hollowing!

  • @Gsquared4279
    @Gsquared4279 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    simple enough but how do you clean it out each year?

  • @MarkMcCluney
    @MarkMcCluney 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wonderful job. Really entertaining from chain saw to hot air gun! Excellent work with the skew chisel - are you using it as a scraper near the end there? Very brave! Great vid mate.

    • @ScrapwoodCity
      @ScrapwoodCity  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mark! I use the skew mostly to remove material fast and clean. No this is not a scraping cut. I think it is called a pealing cut but I am not really sure! I use it sometimes as a scraper, like in the part where I make the dovetailed tenon!

    Thanks for sharing your videos.

    • @ScrapwoodCity
      @ScrapwoodCity  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! If I have to open I guess I'll have to unglue it! I could create a threaded cap but I thought it wasn't necessary! This will probably last for about 2 seasons outside!

    • @willybee3056
      @willybee3056 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking that a couple of small screws from the sides, under the rim, would do it.
      Thanks for the reply.

    • @ScrapwoodCity

    Anyone knows why the chisel sometimes gets stuck/bites in the wood and stops the rotation of the workpiece completely? I've had this problem a few times as well. I use a similarly shaped chisel. Thanks!
