I fish with a SilverMax combo every other day, and it's holding up fine after 3 years. Admittedly, it's no Revo, but they've hauled in 25lb catfish and more bass than I can count.

I fish out of a kayak at least four times a week and have used all baitcasters from all different price points. 1) a black max will last and not fall apart.... ever. I bought a black max I think four years ago and I still use it over my 100$ plus reels sometimes for fun. All the other max reels by abu I haven’t invested in because the black max is good enough for entry level. 2) you can fish these reels four or five times a week.... I have multiple cheaper reels and the best cheap ones are the max family and cadence brand (CB6 and 8). Personally I think this guy just likes expensive things lol because I have lews Mach one and two and it’s better than cheaper reels but it does the same job. This guy is beating up these reels while they’re in his hands. 😂 everyone has there opinion but I bet if you read these comments you’ll see more good than bad out of the max reels at least

    • @CentralCoastBass

I fish abu garcia reels all the time, ora sx has been my go to reel for four years. Just saying these two reels are not good if you fish hard and catch fish 8 hours a day. If you have had a black max four years and it still works, god bless. Mine failed in 6 moths, all three of them.

    • @hardtarget2359

I have to agree with the original commenter. I’ve had 3 silver max reels and I love them. Never had a single issue with them. But I can see where your coming from CCB. I just bought a Shimano reel and have heard nothing but good things. When I pulled it out of the package you could tell one of the bearings had some corrosion and it kinda soured me on Shimano. I’ll probably give them another try but tried a pflueger instead. It was a little better but not much. I like Abu, Kast king, and Lews.

Depends on the time fished, my 6 months would equal about 3 years for a normal average fisherman. Lots of hours and lots of casts, a good quality reel would last that long with the same hours and fish.

CBB, came across your channel and found it informative. That said, I am reciprocating what many of your subscribers comments noted. These reels are entry level and the price reflects the quality but allows new anglers introduction to fishing . I tend to Fish 5 to 6 days a week at least 4 to 8 hours a day. Avid anglers soon realize the comfort of lighter rod and eels not only perform and last longer but also take less toll on the body.

I only fish saltwater tidal creeks. I've fished 2 orras for about 5 years no problems. I've also had worm gear problems on the Black Max and Silver Max. I started spraying the worm gear with reel magic before going and after rinsing with fresh water upon return i spray the worm gear and whole reel again. This has greatly improved the life span of my worm gears on those reels. I used to fish buzz baits at night for bass until I got to old to stay up all night and had many push buttons go out. I don;t seem to have as much problem with the push buttons now because I usually fish a lot slower with either grubs or mud minnows on jigheads.

I use Kastking reels costing from $29 to $65, and my wife uses Lews/Abu, and yes, 1 blackmax, 12 reels in total. We have fished these reels for 5 years, caught over 1,000 bass/northerns in that time period, (I record every catch, lake and weather conditions for each day out) and I only had 1 older, +6 years old, KK reel that the thumb bar return spring came off it's retaining stud and got bent out of shape. Although a discontinued reel, they went and found my spring in their boneyard. Personally I will keep on using the "lower end" reels.

Oh for the good ole days. The second baitcaster that I ever bought, around 1983, give or take a year or so. It was a Shimano Bantum. I believe for about $25. This was shortly after Diawa came out with they're magforce and my Shimano had a magnetic braking system too. I picked up two and gave one to my Uncle. My Uncle due to an accident while he was a child was a little mentally impared, I'll just say he could tear up a steel bar with a rubber hammer but he loved to fish. I was single and worked 4 days per week so we were on the water fishing 3 days per week most of the time. The abuse he gave his was unreal like just dropping in the sand on a sand bar etc. It took him over 3 years to tear it up. Mine was still working perfectly until about 20 years ago when I lost it in a pawn shop. They don't make um like they used to, at least at an affordable price.

I agree with what you are saying I've Been an ABU Garcia guy most of my life and have never been impressed by their small baitcaster offerings like the black max. I personally prefer the older style big body reels. 4000, 5000, 6000 series. I've got a 4000cb and a 5500c which are probably 20 years old and still function like new. yeah they don't have all the mag brakes and stuff on them but its never been a problem for me.

Aside from some of the older premiers, I totally agree. The stx, the mgx and mgxtremes that I have purchased are complete junk.Side plates fall off then eventually the gears bind up and you can’t cast a 3/8s jig more then 20ft. I initially bought 2 mgx and 2 mgxtremes for some NRX and conquests that I picked up. I wanted to make the set ups super light, so I went with these models after reading some positive reviews. Couple of things. For a lot of fishermen, a $100 reel is not something they can just lay money out for. It’s something they have to save toward and even then, it may be impossible because of their money situation. I know cheaper baitcasters can be hard to work with sometimes, but for some, that’s all they have and they work really hard and practice to figure them out to make it a net positive for themselves.
Second. This may just be me, but if I have something I absolutely hate in my possession, I wouldn’t give it to somebody. If I disliked it so much, I’d just toss it in the trash.

My piece of advice is to spend a little more up front. I get that money is tight for a lot of people, but you get what you pay for, in a very general sense.
People on a budget tend to always look at price first, but I would rather spend 100 dollars once, than 60 dollars twice. Kicking the can down the road is a horrible mentality to have.
I wait for things to go on sale, then I buy them, and I'm generally happier to have something a little nicer.

Well said YoBoiEli. You just keep fishing. Time on the water is the key. Sure, a $40 reel will wear out with hard use. In the meantime, Occasionally take an old toothbrush and clean the level wind, grease it and apply a couple of drops of rem-oil. Give it a couple of turns and wipe off excess grease. The other issue identified is addressed by simply extending the life of the disengagement clutch. Upon casting, be sure to have the spool come to a complete stop before engaging the retrieve. OK if you fish as much as this guy does, don't buy those reels. But if you are a normal person that takes care of his reels (takes them apart, cleans and lubricates them) those reels with be just fine. There's no reason to spend hundreds if you don't need to.

    • @CentralCoastBass
      @CentralCoastBass  ปีที่แล้ว

Not hundreds, never spent much over a hundred for my reels that have lasted years with many hours on the reel. I lubricate and clean my reels but never take them apart to do it, that's to much work. LOL.

Thanks for being honest!👍 I bought an ultra max combo that I've had for 4 years and somehow it's still going on strong! (I also do bass fishing tournaments and fish it for hours!) it's pretty nice! I don't know if I just got a good one, but I've fished it in brackish water and I just dunked it in water, greased it and oiled it, and believe it or not, it still is just as good!😂 It's not as nice or smooth as my $200 reels, but for the price, it's a tank! The only problem I've ever had with it is one time only, it did the clicking thing, but honestly, it's pretty good! I also have a mega cast (too bad I bought it before I saw this video! Lol 😂) but so far so good! I might upgrade some of the gears, for the money,(this is also just my experience!) It's alright! It's not smooth and it has a normal drag rate for a baitcaster its size (12 pounds) I think it's pretty nice for a beginner reel, it casts somewhere between 30-50ft on average! But then again, I have mine on a carbonlite rod, I'm also probably gonna get a 13 fishing concept z reel to replace it, I'll probably put the mega cast on a cheaper rod,
Thanks for the video though, you definitely saved me $50-70 on a blackmax or silver max!👍

@@CentralCoastBass thank you very much! As I said, you really saved me $50-70 on a cheap baitcaster, I forgot to mention on my ultra max, one time I took of my handle nut to get some line out of my star drag, and I had to work almost an hour trying to get it back on! It's DEFINITELY not as good as any of the $200-500 reels out there, but for what it is, I do appreciate it! (That's just my experience as well) thanks very much for the video and the reply!👍

I've fished Piscifun baitcaster reels before, they seem pretty nice for the price! If you want distance, you should try the Piscifun phantom! (I hope this was helpful!)👍
