    Been collecting for 2 yrs and watching you all along. I'm a budget watch collector but very enthusiastic. I started with a Seiko 809 ( of course ) and also have a Seiko 5 " Diver " I also own a Make XL with a lume dial and a Defender along with 4 microbrands that have all been disappointments. I've been saying for al least a year that Orient is by far my favorite Brand. So much so that this is the 1st time I have been moved to comment on any TH-cam video. Great episode. Thanks

    I started collecting watches just this year, and due to enthusiastic TH-cam reviews from reputable sources my first automatic watch purchase was an Orient Star dress watch. Prior to this year I'd never heard of Orient! That Orient Star truly glows from my now 24 piece watch collection. It sits next to an Omega Seamaster, a Grand Seiko, a Seiko Tuna, and others and is absolutely beautiful next to them.

    • @bondpit8750
      @bondpit8750 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Holy Crap! Just started collecting this year and you already have 24 watches, to include benchmarks like an Omega Seamaster and Grand Seiko!?, (not to mention the venerable Tuna). Please elaborate, there’s gotta be an interesting backstory here. First watch, daily wear beater, favorite, any disappointments or trades yet?, etc...

    • @asdwinner1234
      @asdwinner1234 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bondpit8750 Thanks for your interest!
      I have quickly gone down the wristwatch rabbit hole this year! Most of the watches I have are very affordable and were collected because of their uniqueness (for example, an Indian watch where all the letters and numbers are in Hindi -- $18!). I bought a couple sub $100 G-Shocks (SO cool) and a small handful of Microbrand watches (Magrette, Baltic, with one on the way via Kickstarter) which are in the $5-800 range. I have a '59 Omega Seamaster I inherited from my dad (it cost $600 to restore) a 2002 Seamaster 120 ($1300), and a vintage Seiko Lord Manor high beat ($500). There are a couple vintage Orients for $50-80. I just sold a vintage Omega Deville for less than half of what I paid for it. There's a Seagull ($200), a vintage Oris ($50), a Timex ($50 and Indiglo!!), four terrific Citizens (a Charlton a Nighthawk, each about $180, and two dress pieces for $60 each off of eBay ), a vintage Waltham. a vintage Elgin (each for less than $50) and a Glycine Airman ($300?).
      It's interesting how price doesn't necessarily equal desirability. That very cheap (and probably not very high quality) Hindi piece is as cool as the Grand Seiko to me, and a definite conversation piece. That GS Spring Drive is a tech marvel and a stunner to look at.
      I've lived a frugal life for many years and had built up enough savings to buy the Grand Seiko, the Omega, and the Tuna. I'm also single!

    My first automatic was an Orient Mako II I bought for not much on Amazon 18 months ago. Looks lovelly, the blue sunburst dial has had several comments. I've swum in it, dived in it, kayaked in it, it survived a beating on several camping trips and it still looks great and works perfectly. The ideal beater. Next watch was a minamilst Bambino for the office (when offices were a thing, last year). Again, a great looking everyday watch for not a lot of mollah. Great watch maker for the entry level.

    I've been an auto mechanic for 40 years. Got out of the habit of wearing watches due to my work for 35 years. Decided to start wearing watches again and after much research and watching reviewers decided on Orient watches for quality and price. So after about aa year and a half I have nine Orient watches. Not counting the one I sold to a friend.

      I have the Mako USA 2. I only have minor complaints about it. It’s not that Orient done anything wrong, it’s just that you don’t get world-class perfection for $300. In my opinion though you would be hard pressed to get any better at that price range. Auto/hand wind, sapphire, screw down crown, made in Japan, solid end links.

Beast mode lume. Excellent proportions. I flipped it because I couldn’t stand the weight. It’s a shame they couldn’t do it in a more manageable weight. 210g is just too much for most. Some might like it. You can always put it on a strap but I prefer bracelets.

    I recently got my Pagani Design Rose Gold Daytona homage from Ali Express. With their 11.11 yearly sale, I ordered the new Omega James Bond Commander homage and 2 more Daytona homages, the Panda and the new Silver Face one. The Daytonas are $62. each and have a sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and pushers, and a ceramic bezel. They also come with a Seiko VK63 mecha-quartz movement which powers the working mechanical chronograph and has the accurate Seiko Quartz movement with a 5-year battery.
    The Omega James Bond Commander homage is fantastic also and is only around $120 on sale with the solid end link bracelet. (It comes with the Seiko NH35A mechanical movement). These watches are pure quality and really stand out and are impressive. Even if you don't catch the sales, the regular prices are really good from AliExpress, albeit the delivery times are about 45 days from China.
    I think most people would be shocked by the Pagani Design offerings.
    You may not like homages, but when you see the Pagani Rose Gold Daytona, it looks authentic and is legal. You get 99% of a Rolex for 1% of the price. I'm happy with all of them and the Daytona is spot on with its timekeeping. The current Rolex business model with a 1-year wait, a cost of $12k-$20k, and possibly a $1,000 surcharge is too much for reasonable people. Also, if you aren't established in the Rolex club with your dealer, it's no soup for you. :-)
    i.e. there is no valid argument for buying an authentic Rolex Daytona, even for wealthy people. Plus, with such a complicated mechanical movement, the costs for routine maintenance and repair have to be factored in. I found that out a long time ago with my Heuer Monza 150.501 Chronograph that I bought new n 1977. It's a beautiful watch, but now needs repair and has to be sent to Switzerland at a minimum cost of over $1,000.
    I also have the Black Ion Coated Bulova Lunar Pilot and Bulova Grammy Special Edition with their Precisionist 262.144 kHz quartz movement (8 times faster than normal quartz) that so far looks to be accurate to within 1 second per year. And they are reasonably priced and have sapphire crystals also. The Lunar Pilot was around $350 and the Grammy Edition was around $200.
    There are still great watch values out there.

    Some one made a comment about my watches, they said I am not a collector I was just buying watches. I did not take is a criticism it was more of an observation. It really made me think about what I had and why I had it, to make a long story short I got rid of my watches Tudor, Grand Seiko, etc. I always enjoyed three handed watches and by chance I happened to get a NOS hand wound watch that changed my watch journey. The point of my statement is it does not matter what is on the dial it matters how it makes you feel. I still do not see myself as a collector but now I realize what ticks and how it aligns with the watches I own. Cheers

    Afternoon Jory' 😎 Orient is killin' it & I think they're beating Seiko at their own game on on several fronts especially when you can't go wrong with things like the Komatsu, the Ray ll & the Tri Star line. Orient is gaining rapidly in popularity in much the same way that Vostok is with the Kamaderski field watches & the Anphibian divers and now they're making a third line that's a little of both and they've been selling like hotcakes to the point they're a little scarce at the moment unless you're ordering directly from Russia, which reminds me, I'm waiting on a blue dial and phibian scuba dude that I need to check the tracking on 😀 ..

    I say for the prices micro brands are coming up or just build it yourself. It's a special experience when you get into modding and you built it with your hands. Long island watchs are selling skx killers and a lot of the mainstream mod company's are offering there own cases with different sizes. I'm getting a 39mm snk/explorer case sapphire crystal thickness 11.5 for 80 bucks from ajuicet. There's a lot of options and at this point I rather build it myself.

    Agreed! Jory you're spot on about Orient and Seiko's current positions in the market. Btw, when comparing my Malaysian Made SKX to my Orient Ray II, the Orient has it all over the Seiko in terms of build quality/quality control. I think Orient does a wonderful job of watchmaking and the value is substantial - pieces that will age well for sure. Btw, my Ray II averages +2 sec./day over a month of unpampered daily wear. Who does that for a $130 mechanical?

    Approaching 50 years now being a Seiko guy. As a kid my first was a Seiko back in the early 70's. My first foray into Orient was a Bambino Gen II, creme dial with blue hands. Not a dress watch type of guy but had to have this one and I love it. Islander is another one. Got the Tritan in my sights. The only thing with the Bambino IMHO is the band. Cheap and stiff feeling. But I took care of that with a little saddle oil and 5 minutes of elbow grease. Soft and pliable now.
    Yep, best kaboom for the buck. Thanks for the review.

I purchased a FAK0002S0, stainless steel, white dial black strap and a FAK00001Y0 rose tone steel, champagne dial and brownish red strap. I paid less than $250.00 each. The Mako looks and feels like a million bux lots of compliments also have Orient Nami .... That's how I see it. The Orient Tristar line is less in quality than the Seiko 5. Bambino and Defender lines are sized weird. Entry divers are mineral compared to hardlex except for the Kamasu w/c is more appealing having Sapphire and hand-winding compared to the SKX.

      Nice that you like it. It just felt that the design is a bit outdated, plus mineral glsss, and a bit janky bracelet (tho seiko 5 is also a bit janky). I am rooting for them to release a new, better looking tristar design tho, but in the same small case.

      Seiko and Orient operate separately and are not even owned by the same company. Rather, both companies are owned by the same ‘holding group’, kind of like how Berkshire Hathaway holds both Coca Cola and Heinz Ketchup.

    I got into watch collecting just as Seiko decided to go way upscale and price things out of my price range. There are still a few Seikos on my grail list, but I just can't afford them. Five of my 12 watch collection are Orient watches. They have incredible variety, good movements, and reasonable prices. My only beefs with Orient are 21mm lug width (grrrr...) and their obsession with open heart watches, which bugs the OCD in me. I have a couple of Seiko watches, but they were older stock (therefor affordable).
