I love the watch and bought 3 of them. My biggest gripe and every reviewer seems to fail to mention it is the shiny lumpy texture on the indices. I’m guessing it’s the lume but it looks horrible. Out of the three my grey dial stalls out even when fully wound and on the wrist. My other two function great. Great watch.

I’ve had mine for about 2 years. Love it! Black dial version 1. I bought it from Island Watch at a similar price you displayed, wish I’d picked up the Blue dial at the same time. Imported it to the UK.
It’s been great. I don’t have the marker alignment issue you have though.
Your day indicator needs moving on one click. Take the watch just past midnight then return it backwards to the current time. to move the sub dial hand one click over to point at the day. Marc Frankel did a video which included adjusting that dial as so many customers were telling him their watch was faulty!
Great content and humour on your channel Fella. I’ve been a subscriber since nearly the beginning.

I have to say, after owning this watch for close to a year the lack of hand winding is my biggest complaint as well. I have a 3-5 watch rotation so when it comes time to wear this one again I often pass it over due to not wanting to set the day/date function

Im right handed and wear my watch on the righ hand, almost "sacrilegious" in the watch world. Idk why, but on my left hand it feels too heavy and in the process gets more scratched up. I find that Im more aware of my watch when I wear it on my right. It doesn't impede any of my daily activities

The original reason for a right-handed person wearing on their left hand is because the right hand does more things, so it would likely be busy, leading to both lack of actual utility (can't check time with your right hand active) and more likely to damage (by being the busier hand, far more likely you'll smack your watch on something).

    • @imwastedhere
      @imwastedhere 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nukadog1969 yeah but if the watch gets scratch I like to think is a battle scar there's no reason to be to careful if eventually the watch is going to get scratch. Also I don't like the idea of a watch being stored away only to see the light of day only on special occasion

I don't own an Orient Defender, but I do own a Gold colored Orient Sun & Moon Open Heart and an Orient Star Retrograde SDE00004D which I both love. The build quality of both is very excellent, and I think the Orient Star punches well above its weight, especially considering I bought it second hand, heavily discounted. Love the brand. If I needed a field watch, I wouldn't surprise myself if I went Defender!

I have a Orient "Raven Ray" and is one of my favorites, going on for almost 2 years; the PVD looks great, I swapped the bracelet, which is a good one, for a silicon strap for weight reasons but, still, one of my go to watches. Grossly overlooked and underreviewed watch, in my opinion.

  • @jamiecheslo

Great video, thanks!! I own two Orient watches. The Bambino Gen 2 and the Gen. 1 Defender. Love them both!! Like you, I am not a fan of what they did with the Gen. 2 Defender. The crown placement should have stayed at the
4 o'clock, and the date at the 6 o'clock. I don't like the re-orientation of the sub-dials either. As for the lack of hand-winding, it's not an issue, really. When I am not wearing it, it is usually on a winder. Or, if it has simply been lying around, a few shakes for about 20 seconds gets the engine up and running like a champ! Mine runs at +10s. per day, the last time I checked it, so I am pretty happy with the accuracy of the piece as well. Paid $139.00 USD for mine a few years back, so the bang for the value cannot be beaten! Too bad to hear they are hard to come by now.

  • @PpaStrmpf

Got mine V2 for 160€. Except the crappy metal bracelet wonderful watch. Did like you did first on a bunt leather strap now I wear on a retro calf leather strap. If one could mix the chapter ring from v2 with the date and crown postion of the v1 it would be perfect watch. Love mine crown the v2 has a bit bigger crown and nicer "coin edge" . I think the "crunchiness" comed due to the strong spring pushing the crown away from tube. If pushed firmly and gently turned it threads smoothely like a baby's ass. What I like about v2 is the rotor. It has a proper wieght. You can feel it moving but you can not hear it. The nh35 rotor feels like lazy and to light in comparison. Mine movement run 15+ after regulation I've managed to bring it about +5 per day. Who ever will to regulate it be aware it is very sensitive regulator so have patient with it. It is consistent movement and it is not so irratic like some nh35s I had.

I don't have that one per se, but I have a sport model version 1 with out hand winding or hacking. The lack of those features on it doesn't bother me. It's rose gold plated with a black dial and rose indices on a black rubber strap with sapphire crystal, screw down crown 100 water resistance AND a nice power reserve indicator.......It runs neck and neck with my Mido multifort accuracy wise which has an ETA 2824-36 which hacks and hand winds.

I've got that very version with the gray dial. I gave a black dial to my son a little over a year ago. The lack of hand winding is probably the biggest shortfall. Good review. I have a number of Orient watches, including both versions of the Defender and I appreciate both. The hand-winding capacity of the version II is nice; no Seiko shake necessary, and the crown is slightly larger and easier to use, but it is at the 3:00 position rather than the 4:00. I don't mind the reversal of the day and 24 hour complications and I do like the semi-skeleton hands. In the end, I do prefer the version II over the version I, but that is just my own preference. I am considering passing my version I on to my nephew, as he wants to build his own collection after I gave him a Citizen Chandler for Christmas.

I bought the Orient Watch Sun Moon. I would guess most people wouldn't be into this watch because it's old timey traditional style. I bought it because it reminds of a watch I had when I was in junior high when I was really into GQ magazine. I bought a Casio that was something like this. I also wanted to get "bang for the buck" and really love the complications. I mean it's got date, day, and sun and moon. Pretty amazing. It's also hand wound. There are two big cons for this watch. 1. It's thick. The profile is quite large. Looks a little bulky on the wrist and so makes it a bit less refined. 2. The hands wind fast up front from a fresh wind and slows down. Time is hence a bit speedy. Otherwise it's a cool watch.

I don't understand how 42mm case diameter can be a con. I have 8" wrists so anything under 39mm is a con to me. 42 is very reasonable imo. Also I don't get the fascination with lume. I don't consider lume at all when looking at a watch cause lets face it, if you want to see the time in the dark your phone is probably your best bet. Sure good lume is nice, but if it doesn't have it, who cares.

Having the crown at the 4 o'clock position is better than exposed at 3 o'clock, but for someone that uses a watch like this as a tool, this is still unacceptable. It needs to be durable, and to be blunt, this watch isn't.
Not having crown guards helps keep nice clean lines, but if the crown snags on barbed wire or hooks on a wire under the hood of my truck or even just catches on edge of my pocket as I'm reaching for my knife, it can easily snap off. I've learned this lesson the hard way far too many times.
Sapphire is great for keeping the watch pretty, but not good for work. Acrylic may scratch easier, but it doesn't bust as easy. Yes, I know this watch is mineral crystal, but how many "work" watches have you seen advertised as having sapphire as an _upgrade?_
Dive watches would be better if it wasn't for that nearly useless crap-magnet of a rotating bezel that makes the watch stick up higher than it needs too. Seriously, how many of you own a dive watch and have actually used the bezel?
This watch was designed to look like it can be worn by people that work outside, but people that _actually_ work outside steer clear of them. It's all form over function. Watchmakers, let's come to an understanding. We. Don't. Care. If. It's. Pretty. We care if we can put it on in the morning, work a full day, and then take it off and put it on the nightstand instead of a trash can. This is why most of us wear small cheap watches if we wear them at all.
This watch is not a bad watch, but as far as actually wearing this field watch in the field? Nope. Slap an acrylic crystal on it and sloped 80% guards around the crown and we'll talk. I don't think I'm asking for much.
I wish there was an affordable mechanical watch that could replace my cheap Timex, but like Jayne once said, "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak."

I know this totally off topic but I was wondering if you (or anyone else for that matter) have suffered the same problem I have always had. I obsess about my watch being out by a few seconds (even with quartz watches) I have had COSC certified quality timepieces - even radio synced and blue tooth synced watches but they are too far removed from the pure essence of what a timepiece should be for me. I have finally found the cure and that is my Steinhart Nav B Uhr with sub dial second hand (non hacking) and a AVI-8 flyboy chrono with a Seiko VK64 that has no running second hand sub dial. You have no idea what a relief it is for me not to obsess how my watch is five or six seconds out. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I'd love to know your thoughts. Cheers. Why such a big fuss about manual winding on an automatic watch? The least you use the crown the best is for a healthy keyless works and the gasket inside the crown shaft (on Japanese waterproofing system).
Hacking? Yes, it's useful when you want to sync the watch.
Nothing mentioned about Orient's power reserve. The most important complication all watches should have, either manual wind or automatic.
Only Orient offers it, at very affordable prices. Try the European brands.............

Was this filmed on Saturday or Sunday? Because my defender's day hand is always on the day of the week and only goes in-between from midnight to about 4 in the morning.

I have this same watch and was able to pick it up for under $140 on used market only 2 weeks old. I love this dial layout versus the Gen 2 as you indicated. The main thing for me is the date complication at the 6 o'clock position and the 4 o'clock crown as well.

I own the Orient Defender 2 in black stainless steel and its such a great watch. The Defender 2 is becoming equally hard to find at retail prices and I was lucky enough to snag one before prices went up. The hacking and hand wind movement are why I prefer this variant for the reasons you talked about. The only negative I see in this (or both) watches is lack of sapphire crystal, but at the true retail price that is easily forgiven. I would also say, though it has a larger case size, the short lugs make it wear smaller and easier on a broader range of wrist sizes. This watch is a ton of fun and I love it.

One of my first mechanical watches is a black dial Orient Disk Rainbow that I still own. It gets put on the for-sale queue often but it always seems to get pulled back before I list it.

How is the glass? Is it still in good condition? I like how Ray 2 looks but might be getting kamasu as it has sapphire crystal...

That’s not a 4:00 crown. It’s a 3:40 crown (or a not properly aligned 4:00 crown, like the not properly aligned indexes).

I like both versions and display designs, the 6 o'clock date position and 4 o'clock crown is more appealing to me than on the Defender 2, but on that I like the bigger 24hour complication a lot more and the red tipped second hand is a huge design upgrade.
That would be a big plus for me on version 1 but the way it is, I would prefer the Defender 2 slightly.
