    This is awesome! It fixed my bose solo tv system! I had a unit that did not power on or show any other signs of life. At first, I thought it had to do with the power side of the board. It didn't. Eventually, I traced the fault back to the Texas instrument Ic with the help of another video on youtube. I'm not experienced in working on electronics whatsoever and I thought that the chip was dead. I had a few 100uf 16v capacitors laying around, so after watching this video I gave it a go. It worked like a charm. The unit powered on and for the last couple of hours, it has been working like new. I did not change the crystals. Thanks a lot for making this video! We saved another one from the landfill. All the best from the Netherlands.

      @@eugenjak I didn't change any capacitors, I've just added the 100uf through hole capacitors to the SMD capacitors shown in the video at around 34:40 minutes. The fix eventually didn't last long though, after 2 weeks it died again. Not sure why, but it doesn't show any signs of life. After it died, I gave up on it.

    Thanks for this movie! My device was saved :)
    My case is: the device played for 2 hours and went into buzzing state. Turning off the power, turning on and playing another 2h and buzzing again. Another shutdown and the device no longer turned on.
    The power section was ok. The exchange of crystals didn't help. The use of two pieces of 100uF / 25v capacitors did the trick. The device turns on every time, it played for 5.5 hours and there was no buzzing effect.
    Cheers.

    I have a couple of these stored away in my building. After watching this video, I think I will pop one open and see if I can repair it. I do all sorts of electrical repairs but have never messed with Bose much since they are so tight lipped with their information. One thing I have noticed is that some are saying the pads pulled off from the board when trying to replace thses caps. I have learned that if you heat them properly and twist them slowly they will come off without taking the pad with it. In other words, don't pull stright up on the cap (crystal), twisting slowly instead.

    Thank you for making these videos, they really came in handy. In my unit's case, the device would not power on in any way. After finding that the 24vdc rail was functional, I added capacitors (6.3v 220uf electrolytic because it was what I had laying around) for decoupling to the MCU section, and the unit is functioning properly after roughly a day of intermittent use.

I tried to buy the two crystals but all stores, including Farnell UK and USA, show that the crystals are no more available - discontinued as end of 2022. Could you recommend alternatives and where to buy them, preferably in Canada or US, or if you have some available that you are willing to sell, I would buy them. Also, I carefully looked at the video as exactly where to install the third capacitor but with no avail. Could you provide a small diagram or on which pins it is connected. Thank You. Hi
      The bose (trying to fix it for my father) I have does nothing when plugged into mains voltage, no beep, no power LED or anything.
      It has been pulled apart and I have the power supply working (measured just under 24Vdc at the 6 capacitor bank) and this seems stable. The remote control unit is sending pulse train (can see that with my scopemeter) arriving at the DSP pin 6. The waveforms at the crystals don't look so great, they are like sine waves, but their signals seem to be a bit unstable and with a DC offset. Decided to follow your advice and try changing these crystals and adding these capacitors to see if this helps.
      However I am also trying to find these crystals without much luck. You mentioned that you had to purchases with MOQ so had some left that you could sell?
      I watched both your videos, very good and very helpful for me. Thanks for making these.

    Rare to see someone this knowledgeable! Very interesting.
    I have a question. My SOLO only switches on if I I warm it up in the area were the IC is located. It is a strange phenomenon. I had it open to check why it would not switch on. Power Supply, infrared system, supply of IC, all OK. So I concluded it was the IC which I cannot repair.
    The SOLO was standing on a home heating unit, not too hot, I think about 60C. And once warmed up it started again to switched on/off normally! I had it running non-stop on medium volume for 48h. No problems. Once I switched it off and it cooled down, it stopped reacting to the remote. Same procedure again: I positioned the SOLO on the room heating and after warming it to about 40C it started working again without any problem.
    My question: which element is heat sensitive? If I could identify it, I could repair it!
    thanks

    • @razenby
      @razenby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be a DSP start up problem or the flash memory or instability of the crystal clock. The DSP is very sensitive to the relative timing of the rise of the 1.7 and 3.3V rails - even if reset is held low until they stabilise and the release. i.e. It has experienced some form of lock-up even before it has been reset, I don't know of any other processors that do that. Any HF noise on the 1.7V line will crash it before it boots. I have fiddled and fixed a lot of Bose kit with Texas DSPs fitted. The problem is that Bose have a custom part number for the DSP so I cant be sure which device it is. I doubt it is a custom DSP but Bose has the custom part number so you cant get any support from Texas. The Texas dev system wont recognise the DSP's ident via the JTAG interface. I manage to fix about 70% of the Solos with DSP issues. . Probably about 15% of those start playing up after a few months. On some I have adjusted the 1.7V rail voltage by a smidge (core supply) and it solves the issue. there is no doubt in my mind that this kit has marginal digital design issues. It is running ion a knife edge. I have reversed engineer other Bose kit so I can flash with the JTAG instead of using the Boot loader. Anything you can do to reduce the HF impedance of the 1.7V rail will improve it. Most Bose kit that use a DSP will sometimes start up and run if you warm the DSP but this is a temporary solution as time goes on they get more reluctant to start and eventually wont start at all until you intervene. I have five units here that I keep meaning to get around to but paid work is getting in the way. ... Good luck...

    Very informative video! Also servicing one right now.
    Startup beep but no LED. Goes into standby after some minutes (all switching supplies enter their standby mode with audible whine).
    Already swapped the 24.5MHz crystal and experimented with extra decap, but no fix.
    Bit clock to the DAC looks a bit weak and L/R clock looks slow, but since the startup sound gets through, should be OK.
    Question: The regulators in the bottom right produce 3.2V IO voltage and 1.26V core voltage for me, is that correct?
    Could be OK if the proprietary DSP is similar to a TMS320VC5502. But could also be low if the DSP has a 1.8V core.

    Managed to take 1 step forward and two steps back maybe. Got the unit to play music intermittently with a flickering distortion from one speaker then firmware to update. So tried with one speaker connected but now when both back in I just get a clicking and the light flashing red and green then to solid red, seems to respond to remote. Have tried capacitors. Any ideas, do you think the one speaker could have damaged the board? Any advice appreciated...the tinkering has become addictive!

    • @razenby
      @razenby  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without getting my hands on it, my guess is that you have a problem with one of the power amplifiers. Check the large Capacitor at the front-centre of the board is OK. After trying to start for while you could unplug and see if one of the amplifiers is warm. If it is then the chip has blown. It isn't a foolproof test (if it is total short it wont get warm) but might point you in the right direction. To check If I suspect there is a short on the DC side - (voltage should be around 24 volts), I disconnect the mains supply, and connect a 24 volt DC feed direct from a bench power supply. If you get high current and the power supply voltage is pulled down then drive the power in for a while at a couple of amps and see what gets warm. If the voltage rail stays high I would suspect the power supply side under the can. Note you need a bench top DC supply capable of delivering a few amps current at 24 volts DC. Good luck. Stay safe.

    • @aquell14
      @aquell14 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the pointers, the chips aren’t getting warm but capacitor seems ok. I don’t have anything to generate the dc current so will need to see if I can get hold of one to try that. (I’m getting a voltage of about 24v out of the rail underneath the mains voltage side so assumed that was ok.). Odd that it went backwards but maybe one of my tests upset it, I had two of these boards but think the other one is beyond economical repair now but if anything I’ve learned a few things at least :-)

      If it is still sticky then no, that is not normal. The only parts with liquid inside are the electrolytic capacitors. The red thing is the varistor but they normally burn and crack.

    Hi and thanks for the videos as I was about to trash my bose solo after 7 year of good service. Symptoms are that the bose won't start up, I have to unplug it, wait some seconds, plug it in again so It makes its typical "be-boop" and can be turned on again. Last days I had to do this every day to get it on, until it did not get on anymore, even after a night staying unplugged. I ckecked the power supply as shown in your video, it still gives 24dc out, but I also reached my electronic skills limit be the way. Would it be possible that I send the controller to you ? I'm located in France, and of course I'll pay for all costs. Thanks in advance.

    • @razenby
      @razenby  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a hard core of about 50% that won't start up. The flash contents are correct. I suspect that a register bit in the DSP is not set or gets corrupted. I have haven't had time to revisit it. I need to install the development system and debug . I plan to revisit in March/April this year when I have some time.

    Hi, thanks for creating this video. It's really helpful. I have just obtained a Bose Solo TV. If I haven't used for a few days and then plug it in and turn it on. It makes the two tone, but doesn't turn on for 1-2 mins via the remote. When it turns on it works perfect. If I then unplug and reconnect, 5 mins later or a few hours later, it makes the two tone and then turns on immediately via the remote. Is this supposed to do this, or do you suspect something inside has a problem? Thanks for your help. Just subscribed :)

    • @razenby
      @razenby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      First make sure that he remote isn't faulty. This is the only product that I have come across where the remote can crash too. I have seen a couple that you need to remove the remote battery and replace it - then it power sup. If it still wont start up then charge the crystals and add the caps. This unit wouldn't start reliably but does now. Please post your observations so we can get these fixed.

    Hi Magic Smoke, thank’s for your video. My bose solo won’t go on, i checked the 24v and the Blink ins led from Remote this is ok. I try to add 3 pieces of 100uf 16v condensator at the same place as you on the end of the video. My bose solo goes on but not at the first 230v raccording. On the first raccording no beep beep and nothing goes on. On the second raccording i have the beep beep but goes no on with the remote (no Green led). Only after tree raccording i obtain the two beep and goes on and working without problem more days :-)
    But if i cut the 230v i must raccording tree time that the bose start on ...
    It’s better as nothing and my bose is saved at the Time from the landfield thank’s for that !
    If anybody have idea to help me ? Thank’s in advance.

    • @razenby
      @razenby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If once it boots it does run reliably then you should try reducing the modification capacitor on the 3.3V rail to ~22uF. It often gives a more reliable start up.
