  • This one kept me guessing all the way to the end. The acting, cinematography, and practical effects were great. My favorite scenes were the shaman and Japanese man having their "ritual battle," and the final reveal of the devil. Thanks everyone for the recommendation!

Korean shaman is the same team with Japanese Devil. The woman in white is a traditional Korean village ghost who protects the Korean village. I realized that The shaman was same team with Japanese devil quickly when I saw the Korean shaman's underwear. His underwear was the same with Japanese diper underwear. In old Korean villages, there is some myth that there is a guard ghost who protects the villages.

I usually don't recommend this movie to foreigner because it contains a lot of details only Koreans would pick up. For example at 33:19 the shaman is wearing diaper looking underwear which is Japanese. Not Korean. Korean audience would see that something isn't right from that.
The movie purposely leaves you confusing just as the main character is confused about what's going on and who to trust. The girl is supposed to be guardian spirit of the town. In the old Korean shamanism, every town has totems that guards the town.
And the shaman and Japanese were not fighting each other exchanging hex. Japanese was reviving the dead truck driver (hence the photo), girl spirit was attacking the Japanese (why he collapsed), and the shaman was actually attacking and hurting the daughter.

For those struggling to understand the plot of this movie, please read this comment. This film leaves room for individual interpretation through its intricate scenes, but it is fundamentally rooted in a story that should be comprehensible to all. It revolves around an event where an outsider shaman comes to the village to perform a ritual that turns the village into chaos. The reason behind this ritual is that the shaman offers something to the devil to gain supernatural powers. If the villagers were aware of this fact, they would drive the harmful shaman away. To earn the trust of the villagers, one of them pretends to show signs that they can expel the evil spirits. However, these two shamans are actually working together as a team.
Within the village, there is also a guardian deity who fights against evil spirits to help the villagers. Yet, the protagonist of this movie, a police officer, struggles to discern whose words to trust. Furthermore, the movie emphasizes the malevolence of the evil spirits by distorting the teachings of Jesus and mocking his words and actions throughout the narrative.

In Korea, it was believed that every village had a guardian deity, and there were totems called jangseung that prevented bad luck.
During the ceremony, male shaman nails this jangseung and made a living sacrifice, but there is no ritual for making a living sacrifice in Korea.

it would be very confusing to understand because of the caption 'Doubt'.
In Korean language, 'doubt' and 'suspect' are not distinguished, but are one word, 'uisim' which is more like meaning of 'suspicion' than 'doubt'.
The movie starts with paragraphs about the 'Thomas's doubt' in the bible, so as a Korean I could easily assume this would be about suspicion because Thomas's 'UISIM' is actually used as a negative meaning of 'suspicious' in Korean, not 'doubtful'. Or it could have been the director's intention considering the two meanings of 'uisim'. All the characters who suffered in the movie suspect other people, but all they needed were to doubt their suspicions.
Here's the simplest description I can explain about this film.
'Suspicion' which means believing only what you want to believe is like taking a bait put in by evil.
If evil exists, it does not need to do anything but putting a small bait tempting human's evil nature and only waits like fishing.
In this case, being a stranger or, put him on a certain situation is just enough as a bait. Especially different races would be more effective.
the movie is the wailing for how helpless human beings are...
to be so easily seduced by such trivial bait.
Additionally, according to the director's interview, The girl represents God.
the director who grew up in a Protestant family said he felt like God sends us very confusing messages, not in clear way.
And about the shaman, we don't know exactly who he is. He collects souls like the stranger but not clear that he has same reason.
we can just assume he is on the same side as the stranger. but in some way, this kind of things are not important.
we don't know exactly if the stranger is a actual devil or not. I mean typical devil that has a certain form like a monster.
[He was just seen as a devil because of the priest's 'suspicion'.] This is the theme of the film.
Thus the priest sinned and the evil (no matter what form it is) took his soul.
    One more thing.😅
When the stranger said what Jesus told Thomas, the priest shocked and spoke "Oh Lord,"
The director wanted this to be seen in two ways.
The first one is, of course, "Oh Lord, help me."
    The second one is...
"In the eyes of the people in Jerusalem who killed Jesus, a stranger from nowhere like Bethlehem might have seemed like a devil." the dirctor said.
"Since the priest realized his sin, he might have thought the stranger as god."

By the way, the Japanese actor who played the devil in this movie also played some small role in the famous American movie "Kill Bill vol.1" by the director Quentin Tarantino. He was one of the Japanese gang members at the bar with Lucy Lui. And his head was cut off by Lucy Lui with her sword - very soon after he said something rude to her at the bar, haha.

Man, I love this film. I just randomly watched it one time knowing nothing about it and was absolutely blown away.
The one part that confused me is why the Japanese man (the demon) was scared and crying when he was running through the wood. I think when the exorcism was happening, the ghost lady (the guardian of the village) actually did exorcise the demon. So I think when they chased him through the forest, that was actually just a Japanese man and not the demon. And of course they run him to his eventual death which is the sin the guardian was talking about. And what allows the demon to again possess the body.

Thanks to your reaction. You have absolutely a great taste in picking movie, in particular given halloween season is closing in. This one is quite hard to catch because in-depth knowledge on the asian shamanism, especially korean one is needed to fully understand. Just acting and vibe make it worth watching though. Director Na made a couple of more movies based off the asian shamanism. There's one, as far as I remember, based on thai out there. BTW, my personal taste tells 'the yellow sea' is his best work so far. Its magnitude and depth of storyline competes with the godfather series in my opinion. And of course, don't miss out 'the chaser' if you are determined to fully enjoy halloween. This horror master knows how to chill viewers to the bone.

Maybe the truth doesn't exist in this movie. When you start to doubt someone, you believe that suspicion. And that belief becomes true. So I think the second half of this movie is closer to an illusion presented by the characters' doubts and beliefs rather than the truth itself.

The difference is I am willing to watch goksung again, partly because I couldn't utterly understand, but I don't wanna watch midsommar again maybe because it has a higher level of atrocity than goksung. It’s definitely a movie that needs to see several times as well as search for theory to understand. The scene where the shaman and the japanese are doing rituals is actually using montage expressions to mislead the audience. It seems like the japanese is actually fighting the girl spirits there, not the shaman. The girl spirits appear to be the guardian of the village, so she’s got power as well, so when the shaman meet her, she uses her power to force him to leave the village, but after that the shaman get pulled over by the japanese. That’s why he call the police dad and saying the girl is evil to help the japanese.

Woman in white = spirit. In Korean legend, a spirit exists in each village. The spirit is a sacred being that protects the village and protects the village people. My guess is that the old woman she is talking about is the Great Spirit: the mother of spirits. The reason she possesses people's things (hairpins, clothes) is to protect them.
