  • Another phenomenal movie by Bong Joon-ho. This one might have had the biggest twist I've seen yet from him. Kim Hye-ja absolutely killed it. The final breakdown she had after meeting JP, knowing he was innocent, but allowing him to take the blame, was powerful. As a mother, her instinct will always be to protect her child, even at the cost of her own humanity.

The main actress has been national-widely known as traditional dedicated mother-like figure in south korea. When she was sick and tired of cliché of motherhood, director bong offered this movie. And she nailed it.

A shocking film that showed the dark side of motherhood, which was considered a sanctuary in Korea. And, In the final ending scene, the mother's dance even looks like her desperate struggle to escape the hellish reality.

Bong Joon-ho doesn't miss, loved this one. Another great Korean director is Lee Chang-dong, I'd recommend the following films of his: Oasis, Secret Sunshine, and Poetry.

Thanks for reacting to this! Mother doesn't get as much attention and love as Parasite and Memories but personally I think its a very underrated masterpiece.

My favorite movie among Bong Joon-ho's movies... It leaves a lot of afterglow in my heart after watching it.
The scene where she says "You don't have a mother" to the child who comes in instead of her son is so heartbreaking. The child is not the real culprit.

    It's an interpretation of "Mother."
First of all, it is Korean culture that needs to be addressed.
    1. Korea has a culture of eating clean and white "tofu" to mean that when released from prison, you should no longer sin and live clean. Dojun eating tofu also means that.
    2. There are many types of buses in Korea. As you know, the land of Korea is smaller than the state of the United States, so there are many buses that travel around both ends of the country. It may be common for Americans to travel three to four hours, but not in Korea. So, there is a culture of singing along or dancing by playing songs so as not to be bored on the move for a long time. But recently, I haven't been dancing as much as possible because it's dangerous. (Mainly middle-aged culture.)
    3. Acupuncture is an Eastern culture called "Korean medicine."
It started in China and spread to Korea. Acupuncture is when a thin needle is placed in a specific area where blood flows, the body circulates and the disease improves. Of course, there are modern hospitals, but this is also often visited by the elderly. In fact, foreigners can get hit if they are interested.
    ---------
"Mother" has the same structure as the beginning. The first scene is dancing with everything put down, not knowing what to do with the complicated and subtle mind after the murder. The last bus scene is dancing among mothers. The director partially prevented her from finding her in the crowd. It means that they may be "mom" just like the main character. And because of the sunset, it's like humans burning in hell.
Personally, it's more creepy than the dance scene in "Joker."
Motherly love is always sublime, but also selfish. This is a movie that contains such uncomfortable facts.
Finally, did you know that the real name of "Mother" has never been called in a movie? The identity of the main character means that he existed only as a "mother."
It may have been difficult to understand perfectly because of its Korean characteristics, but those who like certain movies choose Mother over Parasite as the first among Bong Joon-ho's films.
For a more detailed interpretation of the movie, I recommend this
    th-cam.com/video/iT08OXSSZxo/w-d-xo.html
I hope you understand. There might be some wrong sentences by translating it

last scene means 1. First of movie, poker-face dancing connected. 2. she didn't dance at first, but she got into normal people. she want to forget what she did 3. all mothers same as her(actress) we cannot distinguish her from other's at last. 4. sunset and dancing shadow looks like burining in a hell. she punished what she did

Yes! I was hoping u would react to this someday. This film made me think for days after watching - the performances and little details in it were so damn powerful. Someone else remarked about how in the intro u can see she adds the see no evil/ speak no evil in her dance (perhaps to keep a little sanity), but in the end, her dance has her melt away into madness as she tries to forget the horror she has become. Brilliant storytelling. Keep up the channel Kase!

This movie is brilliant, one of my favourite from BJH.
And I wonder if the son was pretending the whole time to be mentally behind, that he was actually smart. He even is a manipulator. He manipulate his mom with childhood story that mom tried to kill him, in order to plant more guilt in her, so she would do anything to get him out of prison. That's insane

    • @KaseWest
      @KaseWest  ปีที่แล้ว +11

Personally I don’t think he was pretending. I think the poison that his mother gave him as a child is what caused his poor mental development, further adding to her guilt.

    • @itaatisa8357
      @itaatisa8357 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@KaseWest I don't think that's the case. He has had mental development problems since birth. That is why mom was having a hard time raising him and decided to kill him and kill herself. What they drank was not poison, I think it is some kind of cleaning liquid. Not so dangerous, in result they only got diarrhea for days.
My guess is probably at some point in his age, his brain made progress and improvement, his mom didn't know it. So at present time he was not actually that stupid.

@@itaatisa8357 he is became mentally retarded after poisoning. It was hard for her because she was a single mother. In Korean society, until recently, it was a shameful almost and very difficult to be with children without a husband. Even now it has become much easier, but still the old prejudices have not been completely eradicated. If he had been mentally retarded since birth, a friend wouldn't want a child like him. He was born a healthy beautiful child

@@KaseWestexactly, we see from the beginning before there is even a murder that he’s mentally challenged. No way he’s faking that since he was a child. The mother poisoning him at such a young age is what slowed his mental development

    Hi!
I happened to see your review video, and
I think you are very good at reviewing Korean movies and you understand the story of Korean movies. And there are many really good movies in Korea.
I would like to recommend it because there is a really interesting Korean movie.
    Three films in total.
    "Beasts Clawing at Straws"
    "Believers"
    "new world"
    It's a movie.
These are the movies with the best actors in Korea.
And it's a crime movie genre.
I recommend the three movies above.
When you get a chance, can you take a look?
    And I'll keep watching~~

I recommend director Kim Ki-duk's film. is a South Korean film released in 2012. This is director Kim Ki-duk's 18th feature film. It won the Golden Lion Award at the 69th Venice International Film Festival, becoming the first Korean film to win the top prize at the three major international film festivals (Venice, Cannes, and Berlin)
His other films are also excellent.
