2 in 1 week. This has made my day.
Yes!!!!
That was my first thought when I saw this!!!!!
What a cruel teaser! But I’ll play. My switch prediction: Three switches are raise/lower for right wheel (right switch), left wheel (left switch), and both wheels (center switch)... essentially creating the aviation version of a kneeling bus. It would make loading up easier, allow AOA adjustments on takeoff, flatten out the gear mini wings during flight, make front end maintenance easier, etc...
Im with you .. think its to adjust the gear but not exactly as you described
Clearly it’s to enable disco mode
The Lock Picking Lawyer, unlocks EVERYTHING.
@@gww5215 Same here. I was totally taken off guard by a comment from the LPL !
WE NEED A COLLAB!!!
Mike, I’m just here to echo what many others here have already said. You are an inspiration and a great example for all of us. I’m a former traveling machine technician and hobby machinest. I enjoy making little custom parts in my garage on my lathe and mill. The little bit of experience I have with drafting and creating custom parts has greatly increased my appreciation for the high level at which you design and build. And the speed with which you do it! Aside from being a terrific engineer and craftsman you also support a loving family and do search and rescue work. You’re a pillar to your community which is your greatest trait of all.
I want to add to this, Mike, mentor young kids we need more ppl with your confidence and capabilities in this world.
Yes, get on with it :-)
fancy seeing you here
Business blaze should do one video about Mike
This comment confused me in the beginning, but then I got to the end of the video!
You seem like the sort of channel that would be too busy to watch Mike Patey videos! Get back to work! ;-)
When my two favourite creators meet.
So far the better part of twenty thousand of us have just watched a man build a table. And it was riveting, at least in the corners...
And riveted too!
Yuchyuckyuck
Truth
🤣 Yep!
But we were’nt ‘board’!
I love the recursive nature of a table made of scraps from a plane that was made of "scraps".
Most underrated youtube channel. I have learned so much about planes and working with carbon fiber and aluminum from watching you.
He's done everything...
Clearly the switches are to engage invisibility.
No they will be the remote controls for his Batcave
"When this thing hits 88 mph..."
I was thinking activation switches for the Improbability Drive
Invisiblility! I’d love to see that! Oh.... wait.........
That's clearly auxiliary switches for a laser show and the firing mechanism for firework so he can make the biggest firework on 4th July and new year! The third onw is the Bomb hatch for the zombie apocalypse
There is something so beautiful about the juxtaposition of your attention to detail and absolute precision resting on paint sticks. Keep up the good work Mike!
Mike, your impossible, l have never seen anybody in my eighty years, so detail orientated and willing to do things correctly. Your craftsmanship, ability to design as well as build is unbelievable. Saying "job well done" falls short of the abilities you have demonstrated throughout this build. I just wish you could show a bit more excitement during the process, NOT. It's great following you and l appreciate, as many others do, that you are sharing. Now "lets get back to work"
I enjoy the workshop build ideas almost as much as the build parts. Thanks for sharing the extra content
The switches are for actuating the variable geometry for the expandible wings. Slats, flaps (leading and trailing edges) and probably variable thickness of the airfoil.this will be a polymorphic wing!
oooh i feel like you are on to something. time will tell
I think the slats and flaps are synchronized with a single linkage so he doesn't have trim changes when they're deployed. One switch would be for air-brakes of course. Last switch to set the landing gear for maximum angle of attack?
PLEASE DO NOT GIVE MIKE IDEAS ...we will never see the end of this.... oh wait a minute ... what the hell am I saying ... its already happening .
Now the videos have a "Get On With It" ... I mean if those words are getting into the edit .... we have nothing to say now ... LOL
@@nevillecreativitymentor Don't worry, those ideas have already left the barn. He's either mentioned them in a video or you can see them fermenting in the background of several videos. Look at the Solidworks screens in the background of a few recent videos :D
I thought the same
This is way above my pay grade! The genius at work ..... beautiful!
With the 20 min video of saturday... an extra video is appreciated... really great stuff
I just get so excited every time I see a new entry from Mike Patey. Mike you are amazing. Love you man. You are a great inspiration for all of us to be optimistic, adventurous, kind, giving, loving, caring, sharing and much more. Oh I forgot... Extremely entertaining!
Those three switches might have something to do with firing nitrogen into the king shocks to make it hop off the ground quicker?
You just blew my mind...
@@chrisdougherty9098 I was almost 100% wrong, except for getting off the ground quicker. Once again Mike blew my expectations out of the water! He made something far more practical, and useful for a Taildragger upgrade that will advance Aviation once again. It’s IMPOSSIBLE not to have huge respect Mike.
It never ceases to amaze me what you can do and how you present it. I’ve learned so much following Scrappy, it’s been a fantastic journey. Thankyou can’t wait to see her in the air, but then, all the learning will be gone ! What’s the next project ? Can’t wait !!
Spoiler: The secret switches are
1: treat dispenser
2: Diet Coke dispenser
3: eject for the rear seat if the passenger get obnoxious.
Idk... I think #3 is another Diet Coke dispenser because all mandatory equipment should be redundant 😂 lol Diet Coke is the best
I feel like I'd be subjected to #3 for asking too many questions. As long as I'm ejected over PG/AF area I'll be good lol
I can definitely see these being pretty close to correct!! But I also agree with Keith... All crucial GO/NO GO systems have to have a backup.. That must where the mysterious, hidden 4th switch comes in... Lol
Chandra it sounds like you have insight on the #3 option. After being married to my beautiful wife for 28 years I’m sure she has wished for an ejection button at some point. Good thing you have your own airplane. God bless you both.
@@natekick7589 Aww! 🤗 Yes, I am glad I have my own.
Scrappy spar benches - awesome. 👍
my 3 guesses for the covered switches: 1. JATO rocket 2. Flame Thrower 3. Air Boat Mode
JATO: jet assisted
RATO: rocket assisted
ALL THE ABOVE IS MY GUESS WITH MIKE PATEY AROUND!! Lmfao!!! :P
VTOL mode? Or lowrider style hydraulics? Oh wait we know that already
@307Driftwood GREAT POINT!! I know a few Passengers that I would have GLADLY Pushed The Eject button on!! Lmfao :D
@@Hamring Do you think Mike added “switches, Hydraulics” So he can be like SOUL PLANE Bouncing to the Runway, With Snoop Dogg playing in the Background?? Lmao
Wow! Bonus material! Thanks guys!!!
Hay Mike can we get some walk arounds of the other wilgas and your other planes
I love that Mike has a water jet that can cut to accuracy within a nat's patooty, yet he whacks the cross pieces out with a chop saw and notches corners with a circular saw. Once a deck builder, always a deck builder. Gotta love it!
Mike you make me happy when you upload thanks alot!!!
Mike I enjoy watching your processes as it gives me ideas to refine my own. Thanks for putting these videos up as they are great source of valuable information that inspire..
whoever edits these has a great sense of humor and knows exactly how i feel lol GET ON WITH IT!!!!
Even your tables/benches are works of art.
Not even started yet and I know its gonna be awesome. Keep up with your good work!!
I always get excited watching your videos and wondering what you will educate us with next. I love all the details you include in your videos. I can't wait to see Scrappy finished and see the first test flights. Being an aircraft mechanic I will be interested in your riveting technique after watching so much carbonfiber building
Who needs coffee when there's a new Scrappy video!? Nothing like a shot of Patey to get the brain going.
Sweet!!! So ready to see the wings begin to take shape. Mike, your ingenuity and fabrication are out of this world. Even a table to build the wing on is engineered to perfection. Keep up the awesome work my friend. Looking forward to Saturdays video. 🤘🇺🇸🛩️
I was just wondering If we were going to be lucky and get another scrappy update this week... Thanks Mike ❤❤❤
Turns out we are getting two of them!!
BONUS... Midweek video :)
I always look forward to Saturday:- Mike Patey or Trent Palmer uploads :)
Keep doing it guys - I love it
Who was shocked when Mike said that he likes to work as fast as possible and never slow down? Yeah, me neither :)
The wing table is sheer genius!
Let me come clean. Mike I used to not like you very much. Your positivity, your drive, your ambition, it used to make me cringe. While still in my state of a little depression and anxiety I came to realize that you are precisely the kind of person I need to be looking up to and taking inspiration from to help me get out of my little hole. If I had tried to be more like you and started looking at myself and not at other people I would be much further along my path to getting better. Keep up the good fight sir and thanks :)
He talked earlier about making this plane literally jump into the air if I remember correctly. He also talked about working with King to do something special with the shocks. I suspect that’s what the switches are for. I think this plane will be able to jump off the ground like a hydroed low rider.
Even Mike's workbench is at another level!
Absolute favorite TH-cam channel!!
This is becoming more and more entertaining as well as educational with every episode.
Cheers "Team Mike Patey" (two thumbs up).
I know what those three switches are for. when you hit them a jet engine with after burner will lower itself from the underbelly and propel scrappy to the speed of sound....
😂😂😂🤠
It's actually these details that are filling in the gaps of my knowledge.
This is the knowledge some desire and need to keep motivated😁.
I bet alot more watchers than you think are benefiting from your complete process 👍
I found a picture of the central switches without tape, and it is exactly what I tought it would be for. Really cool and I hope it will give you a nice performance boost when it comes to STOL performance, both landing and takeoff!
Because you are keeping it a secret and making a bit of a game around it I won't spoil the fun by telling what they say :)
For those playing along, Mike has used the switches quite a bit the last couple months and you can even see it in the video's!
STALL or STOL?
@@professorvoluck9311 Ah thanks! I thought of STOL but for some weird reason I typed stall. Fixed!
That's right! I think I remember him mentioning something about the wing area being adjustable! You'd want smaller ones for cruising speed and larger ones for slowwww off field landings.
@@keithcress1335 nope :). But now that you say it I'm a bit sad not to see any buttons for that!
I love your videos! I have always thought about becoming a pilot one day, but your energy and skill has inspired me to go forward with it as soon as possible!
I came across your channel right after I achieved my Paramedic license, so now I have room and time in my life to pursue this next goal! Keep the videos coming!
Switches: Lift the gear so the mini "wings" are level and other mischief with the gear like dampening for various surfaces?
And wings extend..... may be .....
@@otc-x1-b9
Auto folding wings... Epic! 😉😉
Yes! I've been saying that for months. At a minimum he needs a suspension lock, but raising them up level would be best for predictable flight dynamics. And knowing Mike, he will probably also have adjustable damping, like in cars that have a "sport" mode? Maybe adjustable ride height?
The comedic relief clips were great in this video and were funny intermissions!
Looks like you’re borrowing some engineering from the 747! Can’t wait to share this with my brother (current 747 pilot) and a friend who was an engineer at Boeing who worked on the 747 wings!
Mike. Your attention to Details is Overwhelmingly Awesome .🤙🏻
"Back to Work"
The switches
1. Raise gear
2. Increase pressure in shocks to rear up like a horse in stol
3. Auto brake for landing with automatic brake thethering
Not only raise gear but bounce it for take off. So there is 0' of runway needed.
Nice bench! Fast Cap double stick tape is nice for a sacrificial top since it holds well but can still be removed and you don’t have to worry about hitting a screw head if you’re cutting directly on the bench.
Scrappy AND SpaceX launch at the same time. A man MUST multitask... 🤣
Don't forget they also moved sn15 off of the suborbital launchpad.
Hard to choose from.
If Mike built space x , it would work....
@@Brocks-Travels its working well enough that we no longer have to pay russia a few times more than it costs for a ride to the space station.
@@Brocks-Travels do you live under a rock?
@@Brocks-Travels Considering SpaceX has had 16 launches in 2021 so far, about 1 launch every 9 days, I'd say SpaceX works quite well!
Thanks cameraman for the sight line view of that table it is awsome
When ever I am watching one of your videos, and the theme music fades in at the end, it makes me go "aww, is it over already?"🥺
We are just as pumped. Thanks Mike.
The buttons have to be for suspension height adjustment/launch control. Those hoses running to the king's aren't a normal thing and would allow for pressure/height adjustment and dumping high pressure in at rotation will hop scrappy into the air.
The cartman part was on point!!! Love it :)
Wohooo new video 💪🏻 my evening is safe 🥳👍🏻
Loved your Python clip, Mike! Bad Zoot. Table looks beautiful, what a time saver.
De-frost, De-mist and De-mud. (That last one Scrappy shakes like a shaggy dog)
Scrappy, the world’s first fixed-wing VTOL! The wheels perform bounce/launch & air cushion landing!
Mike is several orders of magnitude more productive than anyone who has time to watch him.
Truth
Go! Mike! Love from Scotland
What a special Wednesday treat!!
We moved into a new home the middle of December 2020. I can't wait to build a new bench in the garage where I can do my work. It will be magnitudes less than your "Scrappy" Bench. Hopefully a 2' x 8' x 3/4" sheet of plywood. Thanks for inspiring me.
I'm a simple man, I see a Scrappy video notification, I click it within 5 seconds.
Mike you are such a tease...and you know it lol. Get back to work and make some frigging wings! ;)
I do appreciate the behind the scenes with how in depth the simple building of a table is and what you are factoring into it with the ende result and purpose in mind. Thanks!
It is like waiting for Christmas times 1000! Mooooom I want Mike’s plane to be built by now. 😂🤣😂🤣😂 great work Mike!
Yea man, magic story unfolding.
He built some tables and used the scrap for the wings of his plane Scrappy.
Said it when he first mounted the gear and shocks...adjustable suspension. Can't wait to see his plan. Set height to change angle of attack on take off and landing ?Maybe? Softer on rough field landings, firmer on hard surface? Off road industry has been doing this for a couple years now on production stuff, suspension tech has been changing rapidly. Leave it to Mike to bring it to aircraft, specifically the STOL world. The guy is just amazing...his work is inspiring.
Or...he has finally perfected the Patey version of the Romulan Cloaking Device.
It could go either way.
My tip is that those buttons activate ludicrous and plaid mode 😃
Dont worry i got tbe reference ;)
Hopefully he can avoid the assholes
So it is going to have wings 🤔 Dude I just sit here and smile and shake my head the entire video, I love the way your mind works , duct tape and laser beams you can’t not love this . Baddest fabricator I’ve ever ran across, I know maybe not the best 😉 but the best I’ve ran across in my travels
Nice progress guys :)
Mike, all my work life - people have been nagging me about my very thorough preparations for doing a good job. It makes me happy to see, how you think the same way and we both know, that proper preparation - even though it might take time - will still be a true time-saver in the end.
On top of the shear joy of having perfect working conditions!
Now that we have some Python you've moved up to the next level!
This is a fascinating episode. It is one thing to know about the washout and appreciate what it does, but it is total fascinating to see how you decide the degree or washout and how you build it into your wing. Amazing video. Who knew these paint sticks were a key item of wing building !
The dimensions of the entire aircraft are based on multiples of paint sticks.
Can't wait.
Love your excitement... the pure joy we can see on your face... it contagious!! Thanks for sharing it with us Mike (and Ron😀)
Loving these South Park clips 😂
Amazing use of excess material! You know you could build an extra set of wings! Things happen in the back country. Switch One, "Hover Mode" Switch Two "Cloaking device" Switch Three "Warp Speed"....Great video Mr. Mike
yes I look forward to these videos every week as a Vet with PTSD that can no longer fly because the FAA pulled my Medical I love to live Aviation through your videos
Ultralights are the way to go then!
You’re a real craftsman and so particular about every aspect of the build, love watching you work, and I’m not into aviation I just appreciate craftsmanship wherever it occurs...
Dear God, please put a pair of Patey Brothers in every country and city on this planet.
The world would advance to fast.
No. Then they would t be special anymore. And you can’t miss Ron.
You just learn so much from Mike Patey !!! This guy explains well first go !!!
After a brief search... and I repeat brief... I am shock to not find any Mike Patey "Back to work" gifs... Please tell me they do exist?
After the previous video, I felt that I needed more, so I rewatched the Draco build series, and just finished rewatching the Scrappy videos, and I have a few questions.
1) did you add the "baffle" to your oil cooler air inlet side?
2) when you made the rear window trims, would you not have saved some carbon if you put the one trim piece's "arm" between the other piece's "arms", staggering them?
3) did you put anything between your head lockers and the carbon upperdeck pressure plenum to prevent galvanic corrosion?
4) I think I missed the video, or part of the video, where you explained the custom hoses that goes from the shocks to the fuselage? Is it to adjust the shocks from the panel, or maybe to create the "launch" effect you wanted to do with Draco's suspension?
Thanks for creating the most amazing aircraft and videos!
Wahoo! Video during work? Folks I’m sick and headed home!!!
Not to worry... I am back to work!
As someone that is planning on an experimental build in the near future these videos are next level. Mike, your intellect and logical approach to these issues, while Learned over 14 different builds may save us builders millions of hours. Thank you for your service!
WOO HOO! I'm first! Now I'm going to my hangar to work on my airplane. Being motivated by Mike! Cheers from Winnipeg.
Shout out to Ron. There is an art form to helping. There is a fine fine line between helping out and being in the damn way.
"Three sticks, two sticks, one stick, no stick..." Is Mike channeling Dr. Seuss now?
Three stick two stick red stick blue stick...
The buttons are for suspension tuning? 1) Raise suspension and lock it in place so winglets are level during flight, 2) Lower the suspension all the way down for easy entry and maintenance, 3) Adjustable damping and ride height, firm/ low travel for runway landings, and soft/ long travel for back country landings. (Even if I'm wrong, I should be right...if I'm wrong it is reality's fault, because just knowing active suspension on an airplane exists would make the world a better place!)
I get that airplanes are pretty expensive, but how did you afford the OSB?
Watching you, an A-Z individual at work, is a once in a lifetime experience and truely admired and enjoyed.
Mike has convinced about, at the time of comment, 50,000 people to watch him build a table, not an airplane. Well done, Mike. Now, get on with it!
You are a true craftsman
The secret switches are for activating the reconfigurable wing.
Thank you Mike. Dude you are just 👏 amazing.
"I like to be able to just go as fast as possible and never slow down"
Yeah I think we kinda noticed that Mike. XD
loving seeing Scrappy come to life, Mike Patey...... LEGEND.
Literally pulled off the highway to watch this
I just love you passion for the details! I often daydreaming about working in your shop on all these really well engineered and well thought out projects!
