  • Dordrecht (population 118.390 in 2008), also informally called Dordt by its inhabitants, is a city and municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland, the Netherlands, and the fourth largest city of the province. The municipality covers the entire Dordrecht Island, also often called the Island of Dordt, bordered by the rivers Oude Maas, Beneden Merwede, Nieuwe Merwede, Hollands Diep, and Dordtsche Kil. Dordrecht is the largest and most important city in the Drechtsteden and is also part of the Randstad, the main conurbation in the Netherlands.
The name Dordrecht comes from Thyre, the name of a river, and Middle Dutch drecht "ford", meaning "Thure river crossing". Some documentation speaks of the river actually being called Thuredrith. Inhabitants of Dordrecht are Dordtenaren (singular: Dordtenaar). Dordrecht is informally called Dordt.
The city was formed along the Thure river, in the midst of peat swamps. This river was a branch of the river Dubbel and ran approximately near the current Bagijnhof. In 1049 the first reference to Dordrecht was made. Count Dirk IV was murdered that year near "Thuredrech".
Dordrecht was granted city rights by William I, Count of Holland, in 1220, making it the oldest city in Holland.

Deze instrumentale muziek is zo melancholisch gespeeld. Daarbij hoor ik in ieder geval een klassieke gitaar.

I'm an American and lived in Dordrecht in 1959-1963 as a 12-16 year old. My father was in The USA Army and worked at the milk plant, Sterovita (?), as a milk inspector. We lived at Scheidingsweg 34. What a wonderful stretch of time. What wonderful people. What a beautiful country. Dupont was building a plant there and some of their people were there helping with the construction. Just a few Americans lived there at the time. There was an American school that went 1-9 grade and then you went to The American in The Hague. Train ride everyday from Dordrecht through Rotterdam to The Hague, plus all of those towns and sites in between. From the time we moved there till the time we moved I explored Holland from Amsterdam to Breda. Beautiful. The best thing you can have in life, and it's a gift from God, is GOOD MEMORIES. I have them and those years spent in Holland make up a large portion of them. Never take your country or heritage for granted, Robert Jackson

Dordrecht heeft geen grachten, zoals bijvoorbeeld Amsterdam die kent. Over het algemeen worden hier havens en een door de stad ingeklemde rivier getoond.
