  • Chris and Andy travel to the Netherlands and sail the Dutch canals and waterways for a week with Locaboat. We sail our little ship from Alphen across Lake Baassemermeer and Kaag to Leiden, onto Delft, Leidshendam and Katwijk before sailing our Penichette 950E back to the Loca Boat marina at Alphen.

    Hi great video. We are planning a similar trip. I want to know, were you allowed to sleep anywhere you stopped on the boat or did you have to book Marinas or hotels? How easy was it to use the bridges and water locks.. who showed you the rules of the water?

    • @apntv
      @apntv  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unlike France you are not allowed to stop anywhere, most places have moorings or marinas, some are even free but most you have to pay for. We never booked any in advance and on one occasion we missed the last space but found some free mooring a bit further away by the roadside. Many moorings have power and water, you can pay for those when needed via an app, sometimes it is included in the marina fee. In the Netherlands almost all bridges and locks are operated by personnel, either at the bridge or remotely and you sometimes need to call them by telephone as you approach. The number is usually displayed on the bridge. We booked with Locaboat, who spent about an hour, the first time, going through the rules, signage and procedures from a big manual which you take with you on the boat, so it was all pretty straight forward. Then they took us out on the boat so you get the chance to practice manoeuvring and mooring up before taking the boat. Did you see our second Netherlands video where we go to Amsterdam and beyond? You will see in that where we did have some issues with the bridges causing delays but nothing too serious. We also have one from Canal Du Midi in France too. We hope you have a great trip, we really enjoyed them all so far.

    Nicely done gentlemen! Carey & I just spent the last five days in Delft, the city of my birth (that I've never been back to before). Headed home tomorrow. Your video looks better than mine, the Dutch countryside and towns are very similar all over the Netherlands. It's going to take me a few months to edit all of my summer video (plenty of sailing as well), but I will post when it's done. By the way, your Locaboat looks much newer than the old boat we had out of Loosdrecht! Two thrusters and a GPS plotter at the helm!? Must be nice!

    • @apntv
      @apntv  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bert, we will look forward to your next video. We have been watching some of your BC trips. I think we will go back and do more of the Dutch waterways, we are shortly doing a Locaboat in southern France though, should be fun. The Penichette 950e boats were only about 2 years old and I am guessing that they didn’t get much use over the last few years. It will be interesting to see how the one we have booked in France compares. They are great for 2 people. Our follow on Rotterdam video will be out on Friday by the way. :-). All the best, have a good trip home.

      Great videos, both of you! We are doing a week r/t Loosdrecht this summer. I’m getting mixed information concerning distances/speed… mind sharing your average daily cruising time and/or your average km/h?

    • @BertVermeerSailing
      @BertVermeerSailing ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@berylandsweetbellajewelry8537 In most places the posted limit is 6 kph. Bikes on the adjacent bike path usually pass us! The larger canals and the rivers have no posted limit for boats. We were usually cruising at about 5 - 6 kph, a leisurely pace. We planned ahead, knew our preferred stopping spots and were usually on the way by 10 am and tied up again (for the night) by 3pm, perhaps 4pm. The idea is to enjoy the voyage and plan enough flexibility to be able to stay in one spot for an extra day if you're enchanted by it. We were there in late summer (last week of August, first two of September) when it isn't so busy. The Dutch school system goes back in for the last week of August. Plan a circle tour so you don't have to double back. A great way to see the countryside and small towns.

      @@BertVermeerSailing Thanks Bert, Your original trip was one of the inspirations for our decision to rent a boat. We have travelled around the Netherlands and have been to all the towns on our loop (with the exception of Gouda) so I'm thinking we won't need to alter our route unless something unforeseen happens. We are hoping to make it to Amsterdam our first night but know we are taking a risk that we since we may have a late start... and if we do make it we also may not get a spot at our intended mooring (Sixhaven on a Saturday in late June :o). My husband is a teacher so unfortunately we are stuck traveling during peak season.

    Hello again,,in this video at the 10:50 mark you're reading a chart,,do you know where I could buy some of these charts ?,,Thank You

    • @apntv
      @apntv  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Locaboat lent us these charts with the boat manual but we had the option to buy them to keep too. They are standard waterways charts, Baz from Happy Yachts/Locaboat highlighted our planned route for us, checking for closures or planned works to avoid, which made it easy to find our way at a glance. We would check our route each day, and then program it into the Nautical Maps app, which we would use out on deck rather than taking the paper charts outside, but the current map was always ready on the chart table downstairs, and was better for quickly looking at the bigger picture of where we were.

    what kind of license(s) do you need to sail in the Dutch canals?

    • @apntv
      @apntv  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      With the hire boat you don’t need any. It may be different with your own boat.

  • @petesig93
    @petesig93 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How much did the boat cost you? Was it hired or did you buy it outright?

    • @apntv
      @apntv  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The boat was hired from Locaboat, I can’t remember the cost off the top of my head but the pricing is on their website. There are a few extras too, fuel, most marinas that you stay overnight etc. it is also your accommodation so there are no hotel fees each night. On balance I would say it is not a low cost holiday but not too expensive for what you get.
