Ok. Who else was singing along to this? This is one of my all time favourite 80's tunes. That deep background hum, then the drums kick in and the horns. A magnificently constructed piece of moody pop. God I love this song. Thankyou to you all who suggested this. Cheers, Paul.😀📀👍❤️
This "Tears for Fears" version is the original - written by Roland & sung by Curtis. And it did well - but it arguably became more famous when covered by Gary Jules (on solo piano) in 2001 - and used in the film Donny Darko. MTV seemed to have it on repeat for ages...
Many people interpret the line about "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I ever had" as meaning the singer has thoughts of suicide, but according to Roland Orzabal, who wrote the lyrics, it relates to the psychologist Arthur Janov's idea that our most dramatic dreams release the most tension. So, the guy in the song isn't necessarily looking to die - he wakes up from morbid, lucid dreams feeling better.
TFF is a very underrated group, and their latest album (2022) is phenomenal. IF you want to continue down this road, I would recommend "The Tipping Point" or "Rivers of Mercy" from their just-released album. "Change", "Mothers Talk", and "Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)" are also phenomenal songs. Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal's voices just mesh so perfectly, and that hasn't changed since the 80s.
Why do people say they were "underrated"? I was living in the UK (London) early to mid 80's and they were HUGE on radio and TV... And still have a HUGE following... This song was released in 1982 and started a new dance craze in the London clubs copying Rolonds dance moves that he was performing out on the jetty for this Video.
The other singer's name is "Roland Orzabal." He is generally the lead singer. However, "Curt Smith" also takes lead in many songs and they certainly compliment each other beautifully. The song; "Sowing the Seeds of Love" is must for you guys at some point!
In most of TFF's major hits, the lead singer is Curt Smith. Also, if you asked anyone here in the UK who the singer from TFF is, they'd most likely say Curt over Roland. I like both their voices for different reasons and yes, they complement each very well indeed.
Man, this is one of my favourite Tears For Fears songs. And when you ask us to give our interpretation of the song and its music video, that really made me think. Looking at the lyrics firstly, it's pretty much someone who struggles with severe depression observing the everyday lives of everyone around him. In the music video, Curt Smith is singing from the perspective of this person, and looking out the window at Roland Orzabal, who is dancing and having fun. Cannot wait for you guys to react to "Sowing The Seeds Of Love", another of my favourite TFF songs!
They are so underrated. They are truly one of the best and most innovative and influential bands of the 80s. I am a huge Depeche Mode fan but I am also just as big a fan of Tears For Fears. To me, they're equally as impressive, creative, and with something important to say. I wish they got the same attention that DM has.
@@abelardojeda there underated because they dont get the recognition they deserve or radio play the catalog of music they have built is ridiculous and unmatched so when people say that that's what I believe they mean, there pretty much all I listen to so I believe the same thing there underated for sure!
As (likewise - fistbump!) a massive fan of both, DM have been far more consistent in terms of output and also have a far more extensive back catalogue than TFF does. Also, once DM broke through in the USA around the Rose Bowl concert, they ironically became far more successful in the States - and Europe of course - than they ever really were here in the UK. Here, people _still_ just associate them with IJCGE 🙄and would struggle to name another DM track, where most general music fans of a similar age here, would definitely know more than one TFF song.
@@221b-Maker-Street That's interesting. I have to say that DM's first album "Speak and Spell" is a favorite. It's the most "fun" and danceable DM album. Vince Clarke was still part of DM and writing their songs.

Maybe they'll watch it on their movie reaction channel sometime, if they haven't seen it before. If they do I hope they watch the theatrical version. I like Tears for Fears but really like the Movie cover version of this song much more.
These guys are brilliant. This song could make me cry in the day because those feelings had to come from somewhere. I always felt it was about not finding your place and feeling like an outsider. And feeling like the world around you was rushing by while you looked for your place.
Jay and Amber the dude dancing in the background is the guitarist/ Lead singer and the dancing was an actual form on the New Wave dancing we danced to the likes of the N.W. era (early 80's) bands. Echo and the Bunny men, Spanish Ballet, Suxie and the Banshees, the Cure etc. Check out Duran Duran Planet Earth to see more dance like this.
So happy you did this song, even if it is a little gloomy - but there was definitely a Gothic streak in a lot of songs and artists/bands in the 80's (especially British). A slower version of "Mad World" was featured in the awesome movie "Donnie Darko" - which I'd love to see you guys react to! ❣
The dude dancing outside is the other lead singer member of TFF, Roland Orzabal. For an added treat, you can hear Curt and his young daughter do an acoustic duet of Mad World on YT. It was produced about 25 years after this original recording.
Man, the way you two pick up on the nuances of songs is incredible! Amber is spot on with how they determine who was going to be the lead for a particular song. They (in this case, it was Roland) come up with the lyrics and the melody first. And then, after they've got the music down pat, they sit down and figure out who would sound better to sing the song. In this case, Roland absolutely knew that Curt's voice was perfect for this song. As for Roland dancing away in the background, originally he was supposed to just stand there. But he felt kind of stupid doing nothing, and the director agreed. So, Roland was asked to do some kind of dance, which he did. Or, as Roland called it, "doing the funky chicken."
It's one of those 80's song lot of people forgot (or didn't even know). When in 2001 came a movie named "Donnie Darko" (amazing strange movie, in my top 20), Gary Jules had a huge succes with the song "Mad world", many people thought it was an original song, but it was a cover, even more sad, deep, emotional. One of the first records I bought. Got me hooked on Tears For Fears and been a fan since. This song speaks to the teenager's/young person's mind. I think a lot of people connected with the song due to this relation to the lyrics.
Love early TFF. This and Pale Shelter were the songs that set the tone of their music for a lot of years. You both said the undertones and that is what set them apart from the wave at the time. Very cool group to use your words.

I agree … but kids (such as I was once) can be in loving, stable families and be messed-up. We enter the world into a family not of our choosing, are given a name that we carry through life and have to fit into. We are then programmed, by parents, school, religion, media - all media, and through all this, we must try to discover who we really are, and where we fit. Some manage it, and many don’t. I recommend the book ‘The Four Agreements’ for anyone who relates to what I’ve written here.

J & Amber, Roland and Curt are both considered lead singers of the group (depending on the song). Curt did an acoustic version of this song on the show Psych (back in the day). The group has a ton of great songs that I'm sure you will like.
Love Tears For Fears, they're still on the go right now. Wowing their fans (and boy, do they have fans)!. You simply cannot deny their presence. Huge HUGE band in the 80s. ❤🎼🇬🇧🎶🎙
Yes, their first album, which this came from, weaves themes of childhood emotional trauma. It's my favorite album of theirs, although I acknowledge how much Tears for Fears consistently expanded and honed their musicianship, writing, and production skills through their career. Most will find their later albums more accessible than the first.
tears for Fears tho a few massive hits, like Duran Duran are always underrated when looking back at the era. Fun to see you both enjoy it and discuss it
born in 1966.....grew up with exposure to some amazing music. the 80's were without a doubt one of the greatest musical eras. the memories this song evokes is amazing! wouldn't trade those days for anything.
Adam Lambert who sings with Queen now did a much slower version of this song when he was on American Idol and it is absolutely beautiful. You should check it out.
I don't know why I like this song so much. It's depressing and sad, but I have always loved it. So true in so many situations. My old high school sweetheart just lost her brother and is going through a terrible trauma right here at Easter. I feel this song right now.
Saw TFF last year live at the Forum in Los Angeles, they were awesome, being a Brit born in 1966, growing up living through the whole 80's era was such an awesome experience...Oh and neither was a lead singer, they both sung on numerous songs individually and together.
A version of this song was used in the movie Donnie Darko by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules, it’s much slower, stripped back and darker. Very worth a listen
I have seen them live every time they have come to Denver, starting 1984 when they played at red rocks.....seeing them again July 2023.....we are all in our 60's now, and they are just as good and their new m material is fabulous.
Memories Fade from the same album is another great song from them and has the same mood that Jay refers to. Kanye West used part of the melody of Memories Fade in his song Coldest Winter.
A top British band of the 80’/90’s…..”Pale Shelter” is a very 80’s sounding track, but one of my favourites of theirs and the Beatles influenced “Sowing the Seeds of Love” is a fantastic song…. Good video too
Doing a Tik Tok dance before there was even an www. Brilliant band. Works well with Orchestral Manouvers in the Dark, Depeche Mode, Visage, Gary Numan (who has just played his 1000 gig) and Blancmange
One of my favorite songs on what I consider their best album. I find the music very relatable and has helped me find light during some of my darker days.
"Woman in Chains" by TFF featuring Oleta Adams on vocal/piano and Phil Collins on drums is my favorite of theirs. They are one of my all-time favorite bands. ❤
This was a song off "The Hurting" album, their first, and in my humble opinion, their best. The whole album was pretty dark and moody. The "Dude outside dancing" was what we called "Spot Dancing". It was a thing for about 15 minutes, back in the 80's.
There’s a video of Curt Smith (Tears For Fears) singing “Mad World” with his daughter, Diva, on Tory Burch’s channel. They play it with acoustic guitars. Y’all should check it out on your own time, don’t have to react to it, unless…. y’all like to lol.
My favourite Tears for Fears song. You also need to react to "Pale Shelter", "Change", "Sowing the Seeds of love". One of my favourite bands from the 80's.
Mad World, Change, Pale Shelter, and The Hurting are four fabulous songs from their first album entitled 'The Hurting', a concept album about the writings of psychologist Arthur Janov, of suppressed childhood trauma and developer of primal scream therapy. The entire album addresses these very real feelings.
A lot of new wave is moody lol As well as some synth pop. This one is a little darker and melancholy. Gothic undertone. Darkwave. Like The Cure, Sioxsee and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, New Order, Joy Division, etc
At 4:53 Jay you were feelin' it!😊🕺WERK! I was 13 years old when Mad World came out. I remember really loving the music and tempo. The older i got, the more i connected with the message. "the dreams in which i am dying are the best I've ever had". Profound. Relatable AF. Gary Jules did a BEAUTIFUL cover of Mad World that was featured in the movie "Donnie Darko"(2001) and the "Gears of War" videogame trailer. Off topic: This is day 8 of my birthday month. I am going to optimistically and politely ask if you could react to the album version of Peter Gabriel's "Rhythm of the Heat", and possibly his other songs off his "Security" album, like San Jacinto, The Family and the Fishing Net, and Shock the Monkey. 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Until I listened to or watched music video reaction channels I never realized so many people that have lived sheltered lives. I'm completely mystified how you've never heard of a lot of these songs in one form or another,in remakes, movies,tv shows or even grocery stores. They say a lot of today's songs are popular now not because of the artists but because the artists use music and lyrics from songs from the past that we're familiar with on a subconscious level. The beats and instrumentals are familiar. That why people say nothing is new anymore just revamped

This is a great band and have some really deep moments.
J & Amber, Roland and Curt are both considered lead singers of the group (depending on the song). Curt did an acoustic version of this song on the show Psych (back in the day). The group has a ton of great songs that I'm sure you will like.
A guy named Gary Jules does a killer cover of this song.
Love Tears For Fears, they're still on the go right now. Wowing their fans (and boy, do they have fans)!. You simply cannot deny their presence. Huge HUGE band in the 80s. ❤🎼🇬🇧🎶🎙
This was their best tune from the 80s classic
Yes, their first album, which this came from, weaves themes of childhood emotional trauma. It's my favorite album of theirs, although I acknowledge how much Tears for Fears consistently expanded and honed their musicianship, writing, and production skills through their career. Most will find their later albums more accessible than the first.
tears for Fears tho a few massive hits, like Duran Duran are always underrated when looking back at the era. Fun to see you both enjoy it and discuss it
Love this band.
Saw them in Detroit in ‘86.
Amazing show.
born in 1966.....grew up with exposure to some amazing music. the 80's were without a doubt one of the greatest musical eras. the memories this song evokes is amazing! wouldn't trade those days for anything.
The whole Hurting album is worth listening
The magic of this song is that it would fill a dance floor and people would be crying while dancing. I was so therapeutic.
Adam Lambert and Pentatonix do amazing covers of this song.
Roland Ozabel out there dancing by himself while his friend clings to the window inside, is early emo at its finest. True poets!
Adam Lambert who sings with Queen now did a much slower version of this song when he was on American Idol and it is absolutely beautiful. You should check it out.
Can't remember shit these days, but I remember the first time I heard this on the radio. I was in bed, thought I was dreaming! Almost 40 years ago!
Mad World has been covered many times, and it often shows up in TV series and movies (like Donnie Darko).
OMD was another great group with basically the same style orchestral manoeuvres in the dark Forever live and die
I don't know why I like this song so much. It's depressing and sad, but I have always loved it. So true in so many situations. My old high school sweetheart just lost her brother and is going through a terrible trauma right here at Easter. I feel this song right now.
Oh my goodness hearing this again makes me feel so old😢
This album "The Hurting" was one of my favorite albums of the 80s. Full of the angst, and discontent that evolved from the post-punk era, in the UK.
This was the coolest song in the 80’s. I remember dancing to this at the club❤️❤️❤️
My favorite 80’s band!!!!
Good video too
mothers talk is amazing
Doing a Tik Tok dance before there was even an www. Brilliant band. Works well with Orchestral Manouvers in the Dark, Depeche Mode, Visage, Gary Numan (who has just played his 1000 gig) and Blancmange
One of my favorite songs on what I consider their best album. I find the music very relatable and has helped me find light during some of my darker days.
You guys need to hear "Big Country" by "Big Country". I promise you'll love it.
Saw them in concert last year. They are still great, and the new album is really good. Don't skip out on their '04 album either.
This is from a dark (and brilliant) album The Hurting.
No sunshine & puppy dogs here.
Fantastic Album! I bought it when I first heard "Change" on the radio.
Yeah, you have to do the Gary Jules cover!
The Hurting was a brilliant debut album. Every song on it is a banger!
agree 100%, this album somehow got into my dna. T4F
There’s a video of Curt Smith (Tears For Fears) singing “Mad World” with his daughter, Diva, on Tory Burch’s channel. They play it with acoustic guitars. Y’all should check it out on your own time, don’t have to react to it, unless…. y’all like to lol.
This song has been beautifully covered so many times.
Tears for Fears are awesome! This isn’t a favorite, but I love many of their songs.
Next: advice for the young at heart, pale shelter, sowing the seeds of love
Curt Smith who is singing this song is a genius. Love him in Psych as well...
My favourite Tears for Fears song. You also need to react to "Pale Shelter", "Change", "Sowing the Seeds of love". One of my favourite bands from the 80's.
You have just played my favorite Tears for Fears 🎵 song. Thank you 💕
Mad World, Change, Pale Shelter, and The Hurting are four fabulous songs from their first album entitled 'The Hurting', a concept album about the writings of psychologist Arthur Janov, of suppressed childhood trauma and developer of primal scream therapy.
Listen to Adam Lambert on American Idol absolutely beautiful. He did it A cappella
Off topic:
This is day 8 of my birthday month.
Im an 80s girl - I was 21 in 1980, so this is my music... I love T4F! So glad you reacted to this one. It is an original. My fav by them is Head Over Heels. Maybe you can do that one when you have a chance!
Now sometime in the early 2000's (I think) it was covered by Gary Jules & that was very successful to the point that a whole lot of ppl think that was the original. It sounds much different. Then in 2019 or 2020 Pentatonix covered this & man, oh man!!! Their version of this will blow you away! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check it out!!! You WILL thank me!! Lol! Love y'all!!! 💜🎶
I was never a tears superfan but this is still one of my favorite songs
