Gary Jules recorded this song for the movie “Donny Darko” ... I love his version as well. It’s definitely darker, but it fits the film it was featured in.
A few more recommendations from 'Tears for Fears' : "Pale Shelter", "Change", "Mother's Talk", "Sowing the Seeds of Love", "Advice for the Young at Heart", and finally "Woman in Chains" with Oleta Adams is a must listen.
This is one of the saddest songs I know. Imagine that “the dreams in which I am dying are the best I ever had”, this means deep depression, in a time that people did not talk much about it... a mad world can cause depression in many of us. One of their best and deepest songs! In addition, the instr7ments in this song make it unique, you can reconize it at the first chord! 😉 ♥️♥️♥️

@Les Lapins did you find yourself choking up just repeating that line ? I know it's one that cuts deep into me plus It is instantly recognizable from the first few notes , TFF songs are always very distinctive ! don't let this mad world get to you . Cheers mate!
So much better than that pathos driven, melodramatic version by Gary Jules. The juxtaposition of the upbeat instrumentation and dark lyrical theme is essential. One of my favourite 80's gems.
Roland's dance moves 😂❤️ and in an interview Roland said at the time that this song was written he was broke and unemployed while his girlfriend was going to work and he'd watch people pass by going about their daily lives and it's ironic how in the video Curt is stuck inside while Roland is dancing and enjoying
Great song! And the video is sooo mid early 80s. Please do Pale Shelter, soon. Not only a great song but the video is one of my favorites of theirs. Would definitely make my day if you did.
Curtis Smith, the main singer in this song said in an interview about the Gary Jules cover that it feels closer to the emotions that the words should bring.
This song hits different the older I get. I loved it when it came out back in the early 80's, but I appreciate it a lot more as I approach 50 years old.
I love, love Tears For Fears, and saw them at the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center. I am a dancer at concerts, and I tried to replicate Roland's dance, ha ha. As others have said, there are several other songs from them that you should listen to.
I had forgotten this song, and yes this is their own song and I have listened to this many times. I find it very meaningful and when I was a single Mum I would play this and then some happy dance music to pick me up. I always ended up dancing around the lounge on my own or exercising, I always slept very well lol. Isn't the music fantastic, all the different instruments blend so well together. Take care and stay safe please God bless you all love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK
I love the Adam Lambert version of this song. He turns it into a ballad and the first time I heard it, when he was a contestant on American Idol, it made me cry.
When Adam Lambert sung this song on American Idol, he slowed the tempo down and it became one of his best performances on the show. So it got noticed, where even though its a Tears for Fears song. Adam made it basically noticeable for the group. And really I love Adam's version best.
This is a song which is sounds so upbeat at first, until you listen to the lyrics. Have to say I absolutely love the Gary Jules version too, and you're right J, it sounds totally different, but the instrumental parts are so haunting on that version.
Hi Jayvee, I saw this band live at Gloucester, England, 12 miles from where I live. The band themselves, came from Bath, I believe, 35 miles from where I live. They were big for a while. Haven't heard this in ages so thanks for the reaction.
Low key, him dancing in the window looks like he is filming a tik tok lol. This is my favorite song of theirs because of the juxtaposition of the world and sound and it’s just really good.
You need to get to know Tears for Fears. Very important part of music history. They still play, do live shows. They were huge back in the day in Europe. Great music. Imo The hurting is one of the best albums ever recorded.
This song was from their debut album, "The Hurting" which came out in the early 80's. A number of hit songs came off of that album: "Mad World", "Change" and "Pale Shelter." They were all amazing. Roland Orzabal, beyond being the musical genius behind the songwriting was also an excellent dancer. He created his own style of dancing. Thanks for bringing back good memories.
I always thought this song showed really well the mind of someone struggling with depression or bi-polar disorder. The extreme difference between the message and the beat. Hiding your thoughts while putting on a big smile for the world. Great song.
The Hurting, Songs From the Big Chair, Sowing The Seeds, Elemental, and Raoul & The Kings Of Spain are Tears For Fears best albums to listen to. I can play the last three in order or at random on a playlist and they are excellent to listen to. Their earlier albums I really enjoy listening in order and one album at a time!
1983 was when this song came out and yes, it was a lot more "poppy" sounding than its subsequent covers. Gary Jules re-recorded his version of the song in 2001 for the Donnie Darkro film. Adam Lambert has also covered this (his version got a standing ovation by Simon Cowell). Susan Boyle, Seal... even the cast of the TV show Riverdale have covered it! So despite the memes, this song is amazing and is always worth listening to!
Dude I cannot wait for you to review Sowing The Seeds Of Love 💕 the instrumentals are great. This song kinda bores me. It’s a good song but I looove Head Over Heels and their other songs more.
One of the best 80's bands, this one has always been a very strong song, but with sad powerful lyrics. Sowing The Seed Of Love & Woman In Chains are also both great songs of theirs too.
Yeah a lot of the remakes slowed it down quite a bit. Adam Lambert did a fantastic arrangement of it when he was competing on American Idol. Made me seek out the Gary Jules version.
There’s a great acoustic version of this with Curt Smith (the guy singing lead in this video) doing this song with his daughter. Just awesome. It’s worth checking out.
Haven’t seen anybody mention this song yet but Working Hour by them is one of their greatest songs ever and I would also definitely recommend Sowing the Seeds of Love, Women in Chains, Advice for the Young at Heart, Mother’s Talk and Break it Down Again
Fantastic band, amazing live, you would love their albums Curt (singing this) sings a good few of their songs but I think Roland probably sings more of them. I love their voices, they blend perfectly 👌🏻🥰
First single off The Hurting I think? All the songs on the album are about suffering in its different guises. This is still as relevant today as back in the 80s. Maybe more so. Keep safe.
Tears for Fears are great artists, & I never realized they were brothers until recently, when researching them......this song, along with Everybody wants to rule the world, & Shout, are probably my favorites, & about the dancing........well I am not sure if it really has a name attached to it, but was very popular in the 80's, & I would say, if it was to be categorized, it would bee in the *New Wave, or Punk Pop* spectrum. You will find similar style dancing in most New Wave Bands, like Devo, Culture Club, REM or Flock of Seagulls.......
Jayvee, I did not know this original. I like both. And thank you for adding me to your patreon list here. 🌿🌻 I just arrived tonight. Hope I did not miss many reactions.
Tears for Fears are amazing! Their songs will be classics for many years to come! Like some of your commenters I highly recommend that you review Sowing the Seeds of Love! A great TFF song, with a wonderful positive energy! Just what we need in these dark days!
I have a 12 year old son who is nonverbal. He is obsessed with this song, but only the cover that Cleveland Brown does on the Clevelan Show LOL. He will watch it over and over on TH-cam.
You just reacted to Adam Lambert for the first time doing Believe for Cher at the Kennedy Centers Honor’s and you were blown away by Adam’s singing and you know he sings for the band Queen! Adam got discovered on American Idol Season 8 and he was the best thing on that show week after week, he did the Gary Jules version of Tears For Fears Mad World and if you don’t what that you’ll kick yourself, he’s that good, you’ll thank me later, Thanks!
They were probably next to Hall & Oates one of the most popular Duos of all time. If there was one thing they had in common with so many Fellow British Artists is that they met in School. They were both Middle Sons and were from broken homes. They were in a Group but then they decided to go on their own. It "is" their Song. You are probably thinking of Gary Jules version which has more of poignant vibe to it. Roland admitted he really loved Gary's version as well. It was also used on another Channel to pay homage to those who died of AIDS Related Illnesses. Also this was recorded way before They Released "Songs From The Big Chair". As amazing as it sounds, it was inspired by The Movie Sybil starring Sally Field based on The Best Selling Novel about a Woman who has 16 Personalities. When she did her "Sessions" with Oscar Winning Actress Joanne Woodward she "Sat In A Big Chair" and hence the name stuck.
As a long time fan of Tears for Fears, I strongly recommend the official video for their song Woman in Chains featuring the amazing vocals of Oleta Adams. Phil Collins played drums on the studio cut.
Some other slightly under the radar songs from the '80s are, 'Love Like Blood' by Killing Joke, 'Sister Europe' by Psychedelic Furs, 'Whisper to a Scream' by Icicle Works, 'Just Like Honey' by The Jesus & Mary Chain, 'Cities in Dust' by Siouxsie & The Banshees.....'Walking Spanish' by Tom Waits, 'The Whole of the Moon' by The Waterboys.
Yes. This is their song. Tears for Fears are so humble. The said that the Jules version? Is the closest to their lyrics as the mood of that version is dark. The song is about an observer who is observing the frenetic pace of the society outside of his home. The lyric "the dreams in which I am dying are the best I have ever had" refers to their following of a psychologist who says that the most wildest dreams are cathartic. When we awake we are relieved of What was tying us down. If you watch Tff on spotify talking about 30 years since the debut of songs from the big chair. The still sound terrific. Curt smith still has that smooth voice. So great.

Leroyrs oh I’ve seen the movie when it first came out just don’t remember the song being in it memory not what it use to be lol!!
Yes, I love this song.
Yes they wrote this song. The version you’re thinking of was recorded by Gary Jules. Curt Smith (the singer in this version) has performed the song together with Jules and has stated that his version fits the tone/subject of the song better.
wow lets all bow down to roland's crazy dancing!!
I love these English roses. Such powerful voices and distinct arrangements. Now please react to 'Shout to the Top' by the Style Council. You will love it.
The first and best version
It looks like a dance from another planet.
True it sounds a lot different to the other versions different beat and instrumental but these brilliant lyrics belong to them so it’s good that you got to hear who sang them first great reaction 👍
Takes me back to 1984, San Francisco. Best clubs and music anyone could experience.
Great reaction. Sowing the seeds of love next please.
