Helping others makes us happier -- but it matters how we do it | Elizabeth Dunn

  • Research shows that helping others makes us happier. But in her groundbreaking work on generosity and joy, social psychologist Elizabeth Dunn found that there's a catch: it matters how we help. Learn how we can make a greater impact -- and boost our own happiness along the way -- if we make one key shift in how we help others. "Let's stop thinking about giving as just this moral obligation and start thinking of it as a source of pleasure," Dunn says.

Sharing is caring~ Canada should be proud of themselves for this. My country could learn a lot from you in that aspect. I am grateful for this lady. Thanks for showin us the video of the kid learning to bike. It's moments like these that remind us that we all arent so different from one another and should learn from each other. I recently was in a dark place. I am tired of feelin frustrated with this world. Tired of losin myself to politics cuz all our leaders do is divide us into "us vs them". I am tired of watchin the world hate each other and havin to yell at them. And the only thought that recently filled my heart with peace was "I wanna make others happy". I dont know how. But i know i am too dead inside to get hurt by words anymore. So i wanna jump over my pride and try be there for others instead of feelin miserable any further. It doesn't matter we dont get that same understanding back. I am used to it anyway lol. So there is technically nothing standing in my way aside pride. I am not rich tho... so gotta find a different way to make folks happy. I am glad tho. Lately that thought is what managed to put my heart to peace. I am sure many of us feel the same way. In an "eat or get eaten" world, it's not easy to give all the time. But it's the only thing that will make personal happiness for oneself and others feel easier. Hope everyone has a nice day and good food at home 🍕

I don't give money to "charity". I put it right in the hands of those who need it. I've given rides, to those who have no cars. Blankets, pillows to those who have nothing to sleep on. Food to those who are hungry. I see them face to face. This gives me immense Joy. I don't trust these big "charities", but I KNOW what I personally do. I learned it from my Mother. NEVER pass a person in need without trying to help. My 74 year old Mom just did it again this morning, gave someone a ride an hour out of her way so they could catch a bus six hours sooner. Her only regret !?! She had no cash on her. He was limping she told me as she cried, dragging a huge canvas bag full of his belongings. 😢

I've been telling friends and family for years that volunteer work can give them temporary or even long-lasting relief from various mental issues like anxiety and depression. When I suffered a loss years ago, one of my first real steps to recovery after that loss was my volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity. It wasn't volunteering for that specific organization that helped me to begin my recovery, but the real human connections I created during my time working with them. I hope you manage to get the data from your happiness related research out there for more people. My personal experience tells me that helping others can increase one's short term and long term personal well-being whilst and at the same time improving the well-being of the world. :)

I was an altruist once. It is my experience that the ones that truly deserve help don't truly need it and vice versa. 90% of people in the world don't have the mental capacity to utilize their opportunities, they would much rather engage in low activities than use the internet to teach themselves useful skills they can monetize. And they would much rather listen to other fools than to the wise. No use helping them! Help yourself first, and then the few others in your support network (notice I didn't necessarily write "family"). I can't tell you how often I've seen people that were constantly out of cash, and the week after that they have gotten money from somewhere and immediately they spend how many grand on a powerful car.

I love giving money and sharing what I got with everyone, I've given tens of thousands in food gas entertainment and filled up gas tanks but I stopped because these people don't even say thank you and hide when they get money, how is that fair to me? I'm never petty or stingy I love being able to give if I was rich id give cars and houses but these so call friends won't even give me a dollar. I do favor after favor and don't want nothing but at least a thank you. I'm done because I've learned that people are so ungrateful. I don't deserve this. So I'm done for good reason. People will burrows tools and get offended when I ask for them back so I let them keep it I do as much as I can and get disrespected. I'm done.

This is very mixed. Not only does it matter how we do it, but matters whether what we're trying to help is willing and able.
Need an example? Look at Afghanistan, African communities and nations, etc. Received so much aid, but later on turned back into square one.
Same can be applied in our society. There are addicts that are in constant need of help and wanting to get better. And there are those that take advantage of the aid presented to them.
So in conclusion, it really depends whom you're helping in question.

Good talk, and the thesis may be true. But when it came to the data was dissapointed. Just 6 and seven datapoints respectively doesnt justify making this big of A claim

When I was a Toddler, I began to hate the word 'charity' why not call it 'a broad gift' or 'gift'?

If I find a $10 dollar bill in street corner I feel happy. But if someone donates $10 to me I don't feel as happy. Instead I'll ask why.

If I donate $10 helping a refugee I don't feel happy, knowing there's still 1 million starving refugees out there. But if I see refugees working to make their own lives, their own societies, and their own countries successful, I'll feel tremendous happiness.
