I'd like to share my favorite quote as it seems appropriate:
“Boundless compassion for all living beings is the surest and most certain guarantee of pure moral conduct, and needs no casuistry. Whoever is filled with it will assuredly injure no one, do harm to no one, encroach on no man's rights; he will rather have regard for every one, forgive every one, help every one as far as he can, and all his actions will bear the stamp of justice and loving-kindness.”
― Arthur Schopenhauer, The Basis of Morality

This is a bit ridiculous. “Boundless compassion” doesn’t exist, unless you’re the second coming of Christ or something. What happens the day you inevitably don’t live up to these lofty ideals? You beat yourself up telling yourself you’re a bad person?
Also the idea that being compassionate ensures that you can’t harm anyone is totally stupid.
Let’s just agree that we share the value that striving to participate to the wellbeing of conscious creatures as much as is possible and available to us, is better than the opposite, and that’s all that’s needed.
This “thou sall not…” approach is just a source of more suffering.

From personal experience when I get in trouble and I cannot even think to sort out the issue, I directly try to help poor people after that surprisingly, my problem would be solved without any contribution to mine.

Through the lectures, we realized how much small kindnesses we choose in our daily lives can have. So I thought that a small action without thinking could spread more than expected. I came to think again whether practicing generosity and kindness plays a significant role in changing the world, not just enriching life.

What I've noticed so far in life is that people in less fortunate circumstances tend to be kinder and in a lot of cases happier. I've also noticed the richer and more powerful tend to be more cruel and greedy. I think the world would be a much better place if the rich and powerful were kinder and more compassionate and I'm not saying they're all like that. Just that it seems to be more commonplace that the powerful and more self centred and less compassionate which actually makes perfect sense when you think about it. Maybe there is no real solution to the worlds problems.

i think the statement "worldwide" always has to be taken with a significant amount of salt when said by an american. i've never heard of giving tuesday until this video. and i bet if you ask any random person on the streets of the uk, france, germany, spain, morocco, switzerland, belgium, etc., (you get the idea) - they'll probably look at you strangely thinking "are you alright?"
that said, helping people in need is immensely rewarding. i'll certainly keep doing it.

SOMETIMES HELPING PEOPLE MEANS REJECTING THEM OR DENYING THINGS TO THEM.
EXAMPLE: Children do not learn to eat by themselves unless they try and live the consequences of learning.
Life is the same way. We may counsel people but we do not help them when we do for them what they should do by themselves.
If you do not diet you will not lose weight, I cannot diet for you.
Christians are not called to make people dependent from themselves but from God. People are temporary and cannot be with us all the time.
GOD IS ETERNAL AND IS WITH US ALWAYS AND ANYWHERE.
Leaders that make people depend from them are harming people. We are imperfect and limited humans. God is perfect and unlimited.
The apostle Paul was one of the greatest leaders christianIty had after Jesus, and God did not make him available all the time. Most of the time he was in jail and used to write letters to the churches in order to counsel and teach them how to live a godly life.
MAKING PEOPLE DEPEND FROM US IS SEEKING OUR OWN GLORY.

Solve the root problems. Give a man a fish.... The root problems being a capitalist economic system in which wealth begets wealth begets wealth. And wealth = power. And power creates wide scale corruption, fraudulent representation, mass inequality, and authoritarianism. Focus on the class war and the root causes, or don't distract those who could but substituting very temporary fixes.

In my opinion, we need to be kind anyway.
You're making something good and that's enough for doing it.
It needs to be strong and also brave sometimes, because you have to face to people who see all in gray, because they feel discouraged in doing it, and that tell you to not to do it, but we must do it.
I think that "to be discouraged" leads us to not change our world and also can leads us to do bad things and enworsening something for not a valid reason, istead of improving it.
We are here for living one good life, we have received it, it's one of the most precious gift we have, and we must to take care of it.
      Let's remember it always!!!
      With love

Helping people does not make me happy. Staying away from people who constantly need help makes me happy. Helping people makes me feel like I am being used and underappreciated. I'm already mad the government takes so damn much from my paycheck in taxes. Like how come government gets to tell me that I HAVE to give to these people when 70% of people on food stamps are homeless junkies on drugs or they are the people selling the drugs to the homeless junkies and claiming the unemployment you also take from my checks? Y'all are creating the problems and the making other people pay for that problem. I unwillingly help people enough as it is and anymore makes me pissed off. F*ck this ted talk. I would like to be done helping others because it's very clearly just creating a bigger handicap for them to NOT help themselves out of their mostly self-inflicted problems. Now when my family cut off my theving nephew he cleaned his act up real fast because he didn't like being homeless and didn't know how to get food stamps thankfully so he ended up having to man up and started taking care of all the dang kids he made with girls over the years. Seriously though, sometimes the BEST help you can give to someone is the means to help themselves.

Assuming you're American, The United States ranked 31st¹ out of 38 OECD countries in terms of the tax-to-GDP ratio in 2022. In 2022, the United States had a tax-to-GDP ratio of 27.7% compared with the OECD average of 34.0%. So you pay relatively less of your paycheck in taxes... what's your evidence that 70% of people on food stamps are homeless junkies (implying its a lifestyle choice) apart from what Fox news might say? Glad to hear your tough love worked for your family, but I feel you missed the point of this talk
