Tetris (NES) Playthrough, Tengen version - NintendoComplete

  • A playthrough of Tengen's 1989 puzzle game for the NES, Tetris.
    Played a single player game, beginning on level 0 and ending on level 13 with a final total of 559 lines.
    Tengen's NES port of the arcade version of Tetris was actually the first NES Tetris game to show up in the US, released about six months before Nintendo's own version. Unfortunately, about a month after it went up for sale, Nintendo landed the console rights for Tetris and quickly put the kibosh on Tengen's game.
    I say unfortunately because, though Nintendo's Tetris ( • Tetris (NES) Playthrou... ) was an excellent game, it was not as fully-featured as Tengen's.
    This one features splitscreen two-player versus play, as well as the novel inclusion of cooperative play (with another human or CPU player) on an extra-wide playing field. And while it's missing cutscenes of Nintendo's game, it does feature a cool little dance party scene between each round.
    Otherwise, it's the same Tetris that we all know and love, just with a giant footprint in the middle of its head from where Nintendo curb stomped it to make way for their own.
    I mean, I get that business is business, but what a douche move.

    Fun fact: Those little dancers take up half of the graphics space on the cartridge.
    Also, the Cyrillic letter "я" actually makes the "ya" sound, meaning this game is actually pronounced "Tetyais".

    Holy cow! I actually remember playing this as a kid. For some reason, I thought my memory was faulty, having mostly remembered the blockier NES version that came after. But I distinctly remember the blocks being simpler like this, without the little squares drawn. I thought it was a case of Mengele effect. It actually existed!

    This is the unlicensed version of the game. There's also an undumped licensed prototype that was originally intended to be published by Tengen, but it was cancelled. I hope programmers and many people one daym could dump the cancelled licensed Tengen version of the game. Had Tengen's version was released, then this might be the default.

Also, I've been exploring the ideas of collecting in small instalments by different publishers, as I'll probably never a 100 percent complete. Would any of you guys and gals recommend this publisher as a good place to start? If not, can you recommend a good, kinda. On the cheap side? Collecting/gaming on a budget?

    As someone with all three Famicom/NES versions, I'm not sure I'd call it the best. The 2 player modes are a good inclusion, but I don't think that makes it inherently better. For one thing, they don't have real interaction between the players like the sending of garbage from the Game Boy version (which would also have been in Nintendo's version had they not run out of time to make the release date). But also the mechanics are inferior to the Nintendo version. It has much stiffer movements; playing them back to back, it's obvious that the Nintendo version is a much smoother game. It has a weird rotation system that always places the piece as though it were in the top left of a box around it, even when that doesn't make sense as a pivot point (it's especially noticeable on the T piece). And the speed curve is too slow, making the game feel like a drag at times, and doesn't quite get as frantically paced. The whole pause, take score, and continue at higher level (which BPS's Famicom version also has) is clearly influenced from the Atari Games arcade version, but it doesn't have the variable goals that version has to keep it more interesting.

  • @CrashMan6547
    @CrashMan6547 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Surprisingly accurate to the arcade version, although I think Nintendo’s versions have aged a bit better than the original arcade version. Not to say that it’s bad, it’s still very much Tetris, just doesn’t have the same charm as the Nintendo Versions.

      @@mattsneed4569 I felt bad for Nintendo of America playing god with video game content prior to the ESRB, and they did that only because they were scared of ending up like Atari Corporation. I'm happy they still became successful though despite their rough beginnings after Atari messed up the video game industry back in the early 80's.

    It is true that it is a "pirate" game?

    • @Taneuma_563
      @Taneuma_563 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, but not intentionally. There was a big race when it came to who would get the console publishing rights to Tetris.
      At first Tengen thought they had successfully obtained the rights to produce a NES version of Tetris, so they went right on ahead and created it.
      However, a few days after the release of Tengen's NES port, it had became known around the grape vine that it was actually Nintendo who had officially obtained the rights to produce an adaptation of Tetris on the NES, and as a result, Tengen was left with no other decision but to recall all copies of their version of Tetris to avoid the big N from slapping them with a lawsuit, especially considering they already had bad blood with Nintendo after they took them to court over reserve engineering the 10NES lockout chip, allowing Tengen to publish their games on the NES without having to pay Nintendo's expensive publishing fees and strict limit on how many games a 3rd party publisher was allowed to put out a year.
      As for piracy, it was a small game with no copy protection, making it easy for pirate companies to remove the copyright strings from the title screen and slap it on the millions of 1000000000 in 1 multicarts they produced.
