Very happy to finally tell this story from the "completed" side - it was a long journey but well worth it. PS the astute among you will probably call me out as that is most definitely not a '54 Ford, it's a '49 Chevy, but I couldn't remember for the life of me when telling the story what Brandon's truck was, I just remembered that it was really well done.

Really good story. Not just the great car project described, but a great example of how business and personal relationships can happen when you least expect or plan. Those are best relationships because they're not forced or contrived.

This is what Porsche is all about - I'm on #3 and I don't see myself ever wanting another brand. It's the intangibles and the experience that other brands just can't match. Congrats on your dream car Doug.
Air cooled 911's are my fav because they're such a simple design, ez to maintain, mostly just a get in, turn the key and drive.
Any build is like going into space to explore the unknown. You need patience and perseverance plus deep pockets lol .
Of all the motors in The Cannonball Run movie, my favourite has always been the Porsche that JJ & Victor stack into a ditch avoiding a roadblock during prelim testing before the race.
Your love for your Porsche matches what I had with my 300zx. Great sound, great drive. Not a super fast car out the door but fast enough, and I loved it more than any other car I've owned
I thought I loved Porsche when I was a kid but I drove it's little brother VW and saw the same carelessness in Porsche the several times I was at the Dealer "service". My MR-2? Reliable fun.
Awesome story! Still have my first Porsche, a -90 C4 that I bought in 2014 befor the meteoric rise in value and had outlawed to my specs. Car still runs flawlessly and this year alone I’ve done 12 track days in it and ~10000km. New rotors and pads coming next week. Would never sell it for an exotic!
Those c4 964’s are amazing . That an early number C4… I have a good friend that has #70 964 c4s. It was a 89/90.. it’s amazing
@@Jlinwoodjackson they Are indeed. I could happily (after rotors are replaced..) fire it up and zig-zag all round Europe without any worries whatsoever. Doesn’t drip a tiny drip and everything is built to last. I might be a bit dizzy from the cup exhaust though😬
They're such an incredible car. I started in dad's beat up 914 in 1988 with a learner's permit. Went from a 944, 968 cab, 993tt, and current 991turbo S

I love how the Porsche is the same color as the Midnight Club Porsche 911 Turbo.
Old man tan was my grandpas favorite color.☺He bought a new LTD in that color, but I didn't think that a porshe came in wisdom white.
I'm glad you made a friend and painter out of the deal God does things to bless people your car breaking turned into a blessing to the guy who's driveway you were able to use to get your car off the street

Hearing the relationship you formed with the guy with the 54 pickup is what classic car ownership is all about. The headlight thing sucks, but it’s a great story. Life is boring with out incidents like that to talk about later.
I bought my ‘75 911 around the same time as you. While I didn’t do a build and it does look a bit ratty with it’s old, bad paint job etc., I love it for the same reasons you described. These cars are great fun to drive, without causing too much trouble with mechanics - or the law..

I disagree had only 911s on my wall as a kid now I drive one finally only took 40 Years. Your car sounds like a dream spec looks awesome Doug.
My new favourite quote “I can lose to a Toyota Camry and still have a grin on my face because of the sound, feel, and vibrations”. Exactly! You don’t have to have the fastest car, just your car.
Once realized, that grin is gone.

I had a good friend and roommate at the time start getting into cars. I can't remember the exact scenario, but we were on the topic of Porsches and I told him "you can tell it's a Porsche because it looks like a Porsche."
After some googling, he was quite amazed how Porsche design language essentially hasnt changed in 70+ years

Great story Doug. I still don't understand the AC delete. How much weight does an AC system add. Can you drive comfortably in the summer for extended periods, or is it just a sweatbox?
Not just about weight but it robs power. We were applying the Colin Chapman theory to this build - instead of adding a turbo or w twin plug engine, we built the factory engine to the most efficient specs and then shed weight and improved handling everywhere possible. The a/c in that era car was never very good anyway, and given that it's air-cooled they don't like to be driven on hot enough days where you would need the A/C, so I just don't drive it when it's above 80 out. My Corvette has A/C. :)
We've fitted dozens of air-cooled Porsches with electric AC. Saves up to 10kg over the factory system, improves weight distribution and blows cold as ice. We ALWAYS upgrade the alternator, so the entire electrical system is happier. Think more current available to run the ignition, no lights dimming when you are plodding through traffic, no more problems with inadequate charging.

When I think about how much money my dad could have made it makes me sick. He spent 50 years rebuilding and painting cars and he would never charge more than $1000 to paint a car and that was extreme most paint jobs from him went around $500 and his builds won many many best of show and best restoration trophy’s. If he would have charged what all the others would charge he wouldn’t be struggling now in retirement.

I work in a body shop who had a Porsche account in the 993 days. I drove dozens of every variant, A Carrera 2S is my favorite. It’s not the best at anything but it’s perfect.
Painting a Porsche a Ferrari color to mess with the purist is a bit like mixing Skittles in with m&Ms and Reese's pieces at Halloween.
My dream vehicle is likely the car I own now. 2013 Highlander Limited. And I don't even have kids. I don't even really 'like' cars or involve in the culture. But goddamn some of these guys can tell a killer story and that I am always down for

G body, 964 RS America, 996 turbo, any GT RS, cayenne turbo. Depends on what day it is and what the goal is.

Dream I'm chasing at the moment is the 2022 911 GTS4. Favorite I've had a chance to drive is a 2010 Turbo S. When it lands in the driveway, my Por-che is BEST Por-che 😁

I was gonna watch the whole thing anyways based on the title but when I saw Doug I paused the video and made some popcorn
test drove a 458 this month, and the sticky button was the deciding factor. dealer would knock $5k off for a $10k/3 month repair. nix. told him that poor plastic choice is unacceptable for a quarter mil car. yes, i have a 911 in the garage, no sticky buttons.

I always wanted a Porsche 930 and hated Ferrari's (all of them) I got to see one in person one day, it was a 308GTB doing a demonstration drag of all things. He revved it up and bang blew the clutch out the top of the car, it was hilarious. 🤣🤣

What I’m understanding from the tow truck incident is that the car should’ve never been taken out of gear without anyone in the drivers seat manning the brakes… this incident wasn’t the tow truck drivers fault
