  • Today I built two brackets from 1x4's to be used in conjunction with an ikea desktop to make an AMAZING (subjective) wall mounted desk. A true underdog story.
    Blue joining tool (kreg jig): amzn.to/2w9YIb6
    Mini kreg jig: amzn.to/2uZR7xj

    I like that you tried to be as entertaining as informative in making this video. Additionally, you didn’t bombard this masterpiece with stupid commercials. You show your mistakes and frustrations. I like that. My compliments on how well the piece turned out; it looks really nice. It shows you are particular about your work. I can identify with such an appreciation for details. Awesome!

    Your stain went on dark because you didn't use a wood conditioner prior to staining. The conditioner soaks in first and prevents the stain from penetrating too deep in to the wood. The conditioner allows for an even application of stain.

    • @DIYwithRick
      @DIYwithRick  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info David. Quick question while I have you...if I use Minwax wood hardener, can I then use the pre-stain conditioner and then stain? Will the pre-stain conditioner still be effective?

    • @davidminda2136
      @davidminda2136 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DIYwithRick Hey Rick. The wood hardner is generally used with very old and even rotting wood. This type of wood also through age, decay or rot becomes very porous. Porous wood does not stain well. The hardner works by soaking into the wood and solidifying as a resin. This will also impact how the wood absorbs stain. You are going in to semi uncharted teritory hard and these situations should be handled case by case. You always want to do a test on a small area first. If the stain takes well after the hardner then great. If blotchy still then apply the conditioner and repeat test. You have a lot a variables here. old wood, hardner, conditioner, all before you even apply stain. Let me know how it turns out. Just remember to use the hardner first not the conditioner.

    the reason your 90° pieces aren't 90° isn't the wood. it's your saw. it's not cutting at 0°. it's off a degree or 2. the reason 1 board is over 90 and the other is under 90 is because one of the boards are flipped over. not a big deal it's just how it goes when your chopsaw isn't making perfect cuts. that particular problem has nothing the do with the board.

      Thanks! Did you check out the cut sizes here: diywithrick.com/2016/06/14/build-wall-mounted-desk/ ? Looks like 24 inches to cm = 60.96 or 61cm. As long as you cut each side of the supports to 45 degrees you should be fine!

    Think two 1x4s would support a 2x6 melamine too? (With a 2x4) running along the back for support...
