For your tip about figuring out where a profile is broken, another method is to offset the line (using chain selection) and just drag it out. The opening will become very apparent.
I love thin extrude. I work with steel tubing a lot and that is awesome to sketch it. I only wish I could change the default wall thickness from 1mm to 1.6mm or whatever tube thickness I'm planning to use.
