YES! As a genetics and warrior cats nerd, I have two sets of designs I draw for my favorite characters. One design is more realistic to cat genetics (while still keeping as close to book design), and the other is just what I like to see that character as for fun! My “genetics” design often is closer to the book description than my “fun” one! All in all, these are fictional cats, I’m gonna color them whatever color I want!

It's also interesting on how DEVASTATED she would be when she eventually does snap and do what could be perceived as "evil" actions (though they're much more complicated than that) and that in her eyes, she would have failed at reclaiming her appearance (and yes, I know that she by this point knows she isn't related to tigerstar, but shhh she's known him as her grandpa for her whole life up to this point)

I like this kind of genetic theorizing where you try to figure out how to make cats as close to their canon/fanon appearances as possible, kinda like a puzzle! Genetics are a lot more flexible and complicated than most people think they are.
BIG agree!!! it bothers me a lot when folks doing this type of challenge change characters, not bc they want to but bc they feel like they HAVE to! these types of exercises are very much a puzzle to me, or like a big complicated math equation. me making this video 🤝animals at the zoo getting food out of puzzle boxes
I know nothing about genetics or what all the traits mean so I can't enter my characters genetics and find out what their babies would look like. I mean one of the characters had a litter from 3 father's. It's literally the only thing stopping me from finishing my warrior cats oc story, I have an entire lifetime planned out with these characters but GENETICS BE DAMNED I have zero idea wt I'm doing

I can tell you immediately that Hawkfrost being a brown tabby with blue eyes is impossible. That goes for any of the cats that are not pointed having blue eyes.

I can't find any actual information on tuxedo cats having blue eyes, but if they can, it's very, very, very rare. I know I've never seen or heard of a cat without being pointed or solid white having blue eyes beyond 6 weeks old.
Fun fact about cloudtail's dad it was confirmed his dad is a white tom with blue eyes via the official family tree his name is Oliver. So they officially got that right genetically. 😅
Tbh I'm not typically draw towards content involving "genetically accurate" warriors because it ends up coming across as a bit of a buzzkill imo, but this was SO fun to watch. You focused more on "how can I make this as true to the books as possible" rather than just going straight to saying it's impossible! Definitely looking forward to seeing more of this in the future!

I'm a little hesitant to cover characters from the new books since I haven't kept up with them, thus I'm not sure which characters ppl care about more + what parts of their appearances are more important...but those phenotypes do intrigue me. I'll look into it :3
I think Crowfeather’s family tree is one of the the funniest ones because on Leafpool’s side you’ve gotta explain stuff like Lionblaze being golden (not to mention they spent a whole arc thinking they were Bramblesquirrel kids which is even more improbable) and then on Nightcloud’s side you have like, Black Cat plus Black Cat equals Black Cat.

This is so awesome!! I love cat genetics and Warriors so much- after seeing this, I went back and watched your whole cat genetics series, lol. Another cool idea for Firestar could be amber/russet/carnelian! He could start as the brown cat he’d be if Jake was orange, maybe looking a bit like fire, enough for Bluestar to take him in… but by the time he actually becomes Firestar, he looks completely like a flame-colored cat. Because we know essentially nothing about Jake and Nutmeg, they could absolutely have the right recessives for it, too!

How many times have you rewatched this video? ... yes... I just love how you make the family tree, and I started making a cat oc family tree in a similar fashion. Just using generators where I don't have design ideas, and then looking through the family to see where the genetics could come from. I ended up with the first mink in the family thanks to generators and her parents carrying each point trait she needed. Also, I found out Somali and Abyssinian seem to be fairly similar, aside from Somali being longhair and Abyssinian being shorthair So the start of my cat oc family tree is someone's purebred Abyssinian who got loose and some tom got her pregnant. I'm having alot of fun mapping these genetics, as you can probably tell by my comment and the repeated replaying of this video

For ivypool i thought for a second your soloution was going to be that she was tortie, bit since shes high white all the orange just ~coincedentally~ ended up covered up. I'll fully admit to missing small changes here & there between my script & what I ended up saying, but I change them whenever I catch them. I don't get why ppl think Deaf/hoh/apd folks don't deserve or won't miss what's being said; that's the WHOLE POINT of subtitles! I think the real answer is that they don't actually care about Deaf/hoh/adp folks and just do the subtitles bc they're "supposed" to. better than not doing them at all, but it pisses me off more than not doing them at all, if that makes sense.

Millie doesn't have any other family in her backstory, so she'd be open for any sort of recessive gene manipulation needed to make things work (looks at Blossomfall)

This is amazing and really interesting. I really like how you went to Brightheart's part of the family tree. I'm interested in genetics because I have Turner's syndrome and so I'm interested into how a cat with Turner's syndrome would look.
Forgive me if I'm wrong - Turner's syndrome is X monosomy, right? I'm no expert, but I did some cursory searching... All quotes below are from "Genetic disorders of sex development in cats: An update" (2020) by Szczerbal I. & Switonski M., to the journal "Animal Reproduction Science." "The X monosomy condition is rarely diagnosed in cats. A new case was recently reported by Szczerbal et al., 2015a in a female cat with masculinized external genitalia composed of a rudimentary penis and a scrotum-like structure without gonads. This was a surprising observation because the X monosomy is usually associated with infantile female genitalia. There, however, has been a report of enlarged clitorides in four of 181 human patients with Turner syndrome (Ranganath and Rajangam, 2012)." "The feline PAR is much longer (6.7 Mb) than the human PAR1 (2.7 Mb, in the short arm of the X) and PAR2 (0.32 Mb in the long arm of X), and equine PAR (1.8 Mb). I do know I had read that one of the few cases they had caught with TS was a Maine coon kitten because she was cream, they knew the parents genetics and the only way for her to be cream was if she was missing part of her chromosome.

From what research I've done, one of the few cases of TS in cats that's been recorded is a cream Maine coon kitten (they knew the kitten had TS because the vets knew the parents genetics and the kitten could not have cream without missing a gene)

On the warrior wiki, Oliver(Cloudtail's dad) is shown to be an all-white tom. His littermates are Nami: brown and white Livy: white and brown Taylor: gray(?) and white Zack: white and light gray(?) That would be a nice little backstory for the Erins to drop. Or someone to write about.

AND I got my Warriors Ultimate guide signed too!!!!!! It has my deadname, but I don't care, I have three books signed by Tui T. Sutherland! (Technically, only two -- the EH team has to sign all books under their name as "Erin Hunter". I don't mind, in the end -- I still got to meet her, get a couple books signed, and hear a draft from an early chapter in Darkstalker, before it was published.)

I really love how you actually tried to make the cats fit their canon discriptions!! So many people who do this challenge go for the "ooo look how different they are!" factor without actually figuring out how to get the characters to fit their discriptions. Playing with cat genetics for ocs or canon warrior cats is meant to be fun!! Not to tell people that "this is impossible/you cant do this your doing it wrong!" (I remember one person even saying that solid cats don't exist in the wild, what???). Sure, a fawn cat in a wild population is uncommon, but its fun, and these cats breed with outsiders all the time, so its not that unlikely for it too happen. Sorry for the mini rant, I just love this video and all genetics that were put together to figure out the puzzle (plus your dilvery was great lol), and I loved going and watching your cat genetics series and refreshing my knowledge on things I didn't even know about before. 19:18 Birchfall is one of Dustpelt and Ferncloud’s kits lol. He’s the one they had just before the clans moved to the Lake territory whose littermates died. But it’s been a long ass time since the beginning of arc 2 (I’m fairly sure I was only a toddler lmao) so I don’t blame you for forgetting when there’s so many darn characters in this series XD I just have the cast of arc 1 and 2 and all their fates imprinted deeply in my mind, even almost a decade after I first read it (and many years since I LAST read it). Cloudtails father is named Oliver. He is an all white short haired cat so cloudtails mom gave him long hair and his dad gave him most of the white, along with blue eyes.
Watching videos like this makes me happy I make my own rules for my stories of creatures with magic and funky rules. I do try and make it make sense but I’m not smart enough to remember genetics so well so to magic we go! Loved the video btw! Realistically, blue cats don't get as dark as Crowfeather is described, so black is his only real option. I didn't know his recent art shows him w/white... This was so much fun! You are by far the most knowledgeable person I’ve seen do this, which means you have more tools and tricks to make the characters look as much like their canon selves as possible. The back and forth up and down the family tree was also lots of fun, like a little puzzle, and you do a great job explaining and rehashing everything. I’m looking forward to the next one - whenever it comes out in the future. Tigerstar’s should logically be next, but I do hope you get around to Bluestar’s at some point.
I absolutely love this! I've already watched it twice and plan on revisiting! This is so impressive and seeing all the clever ways to make all the colors work is genius! (Spoilers for Bluestar's Prophecy, Mapleshade's Vengeance and Crookedstar's Promise) I think it would be super interesting if you did the Bluestar family tree as it could actually be a 3 part series! Oakheart goes all the way back to Mapleshade, Bluefur has her family with and Snowfur and her family plus Thisleclaw (🤢) (who's sister is Rosetail and I think would be fascinating due to her unique pattering! Chimera? Tortie?), then the huge Whitestorm line through Sorreltail! (Personally I don't believe he was mates with Brindleface bc that screws up genes a lot down the road... Warriors get it together *please*.) I'm looking forward to more of these! I love your content! ❤️
My favorite personal challenge is to make the Three genetically possible through both Squirrel x Bramble and Leaf x Crow. Not that it really matters because the Clans don't care what they look like.. but still, it's fun. I would LOVE to see what crazy things you have in mind for Hawkfrost. SF got all the same fawn-causing heterozygous-ness as LP, and BS can be carrying mc easily, so Lionblaze is a cakewalk _if_ BS can get b1 from somewhere - which he can! I have plans for Tigerstar ( ;) ) but Goldenflower could have it. He can also carry dilution easily so that's JF taken care of, and nonagouti, so that's HL too. And he's longhair, so that's actually easier than CF/LP for the longhair kiddos LOL. so I think all it'd take to make them work for BS/SF too is if Goldenflower gives her boi a b1 :D I swear the next family tree video is going to be 3 hours, and 2.5 of it are going to be Hawkfrost & Mothwing.

I just started re-reading all the books (but in audio book form and I’m on the last book of power of three) and thinking back no, I don’t remember a mention of her having green eyes. I only read the first six books originally when I was in 6th grade lol and now I’m 24 so it had been awhile😂 Also, checking the warrior wiki they have never mentioned she had green eyes not even as a mistake. Their is a few fanart with Brightheart having green eyes to so maybe it was just one of those things where people drew Ravenpaw with purple eyes even though he like, obviously didn’t lol.
I love how this one actually stays as close to the canon as possible!!! Plus somali Firestar which is always a win. I know nothing of cat genetics and most of these types of vids will be like "well all of these cats are impossible and can't look like this" i'm like, oh well, the Erin's just make up appearances that they think just look cool anyway, I don't expect it to be genetically accurate. So seeing that it is possible to stick pretty close to canon is amazing. Also, I took it upon myself to detangle the bloodlines for an AVOS rewrite and I solved the Ivypool/Fernsong dilemma by making Ivypool kiss Blossomfall and if I wanted Ivy's kits to be real I'd have them ask Fernyboy to get with Blossomfall as just a sire. Because. You know. Ivypool and Fernsong are related and therefore probably shouldn't kiss. Especailly since Ivypool just had a whole story arc about how her sister is related to Lionblaze. Hmm.
This video is so informative and well put together, it’s just a joy to watch. Normally I don’t really enjoy these types of videos as I feel that they often sacrifice the vision of the character so I love how you managed to stay pretty true to the books. New sub!

YES! As a genetics and warrior cats nerd, I have two sets of designs I draw for my favorite characters. One design is more realistic to cat genetics (while still keeping as close to book design), and the other is just what I like to see that character as for fun! My “genetics” design often is closer to the book description than my “fun” one! All in all, these are fictional cats, I’m gonna color them whatever color I want!

I like this kind of genetic theorizing where you try to figure out how to make cats as close to their canon/fanon appearances as possible, kinda like a puzzle! Genetics are a lot more flexible and complicated than most people think they are.
BIG agree!!! it bothers me a lot when folks doing this type of challenge change characters, not bc they want to but bc they feel like they HAVE to! these types of exercises are very much a puzzle to me, or like a big complicated math equation.

I can't find any actual information on tuxedo cats having blue eyes, but if they can, it's very, very, very rare. I know I've never seen or heard of a cat without being pointed or solid white having blue eyes beyond 6 weeks old.

Tbh I'm not typically draw towards content involving "genetically accurate" warriors because it ends up coming across as a bit of a buzzkill imo, but this was SO fun to watch. You focused more on "how can I make this as true to the books as possible" rather than just going straight to saying it's impossible! Definitely looking forward to seeing more of this in the future!

I'm a little hesitant to cover characters from the new books since I haven't kept up with them, thus I'm not sure which characters ppl care about more + what parts of their appearances are more important...but those phenotypes do intrigue me. I'll look into it :3

I think Crowfeather’s family tree is one of the the funniest ones because on Leafpool’s side you’ve gotta explain stuff like Lionblaze being golden (not to mention they spent a whole arc thinking they were Bramblesquirrel kids which is even more improbable) and then on Nightcloud’s side you have like, Black Cat plus Black Cat equals Black Cat.

This is so awesome!! I love cat genetics and Warriors so much- after seeing this, I went back and watched your whole cat genetics series, lol. Another cool idea for Firestar could be amber/russet/carnelian! He could start as the brown cat he’d be if Jake was orange, maybe looking a bit like fire, enough for Bluestar to take him in… but by the time he actually becomes Firestar, he looks completely like a flame-colored cat. Because we know essentially nothing about Jake and Nutmeg, they could absolutely have the right recessives for it, too!

I just love how you make the family tree, and I started making a cat oc family tree in a similar fashion. Just using generators where I don't have design ideas, and then looking through the family to see where the genetics could come from.
I ended up with the first mink in the family thanks to generators and her parents carrying each point trait she needed.
Also, I found out Somali and Abyssinian seem to be fairly similar, aside from Somali being longhair and Abyssinian being shorthair
So the start of my cat oc family tree is someone's purebred Abyssinian who got loose and some tom got her pregnant.
I'm having alot of fun mapping these genetics, as you can probably tell by my comment and the repeated replaying of this video

I'll fully admit to missing small changes here & there between my script & what I ended up saying, but I change them whenever I catch them. I don't get why ppl think Deaf/hoh/apd folks don't deserve or won't miss what's being said; that's the WHOLE POINT of subtitles! I think the real answer is that they don't actually care about Deaf/hoh/adp folks and just do the subtitles bc they're "supposed" to. better than not doing them at all, but it pisses me off more than not doing them at all, if that makes sense.

Millie doesn't have any other family in her backstory, so she'd be open for any sort of recessive gene manipulation needed to make things work (looks at Blossomfall)

I'm no expert, but I did some cursory searching... All quotes below are from "Genetic disorders of sex development in cats: An update" (2020) by Szczerbal I. & Switonski M., to the journal "Animal Reproduction Science."
"The X monosomy condition is rarely diagnosed in cats. A new case was recently reported by Szczerbal et al., 2015a in a female cat with masculinized external genitalia composed of a rudimentary penis and a scrotum-like structure without gonads. This was a surprising observation because the X monosomy is usually associated with infantile female genitalia. There, however, has been a report of enlarged clitorides in four of 181 human patients with Turner syndrome (Ranganath and Rajangam, 2012)."

I do know I had read that one of the few cases they had caught with TS was a Maine coon kitten because she was cream, they knew the parents genetics and the only way for her to be cream was if she was missing part of her chromosome.

From what research I've done, one of the few cases of TS in cats that's been recorded is a cream Maine coon kitten (they knew the kitten had TS because the vets knew the parents genetics and the kitten could not have cream without missing a gene)

AND I got my Warriors Ultimate guide signed too!!!!!! It has my deadname, but I don't care, I have three books signed by Tui T. Sutherland!
(Technically, only two -- the EH team has to sign all books under their name as "Erin Hunter". I don't mind, in the end -- I still got to meet her, get a couple books signed, and hear a draft from an early chapter in Darkstalker, before it was published.)

I really love how you actually tried to make the cats fit their canon discriptions!! So many people who do this challenge go for the "ooo look how different they are!" factor without actually figuring out how to get the characters to fit their discriptions. Playing with cat genetics for ocs or canon warrior cats is meant to be fun!! Not to tell people that "this is impossible/you cant do this your doing it wrong!" (I remember one person even saying that solid cats don't exist in the wild, what???). Sure, a fawn cat in a wild population is uncommon, but its fun, and these cats breed with outsiders all the time, so its not that unlikely for it too happen.
Sorry for the mini rant, I just love this video and all genetics that were put together to figure out the puzzle (plus your dilvery was great lol), and I loved going and watching your cat genetics series and refreshing my knowledge on things I didn't even know about before. Holy shit they said that??? Dude my bestie's solid black cat, solid tortie, AND their male calico came from underneath a dumpster at a fast food place. My roommate's old solid blue and _flame point_ came from a pregnant stray they found. Dude's clearly just never gone outside and looked at strays LOL.

Cloudtails father is named Oliver. He is an all white short haired cat so cloudtails mom gave him long hair and his dad gave him most of the white, along with blue eyes.

we know who are Crowfeather's parents, it's Ashfoot and Deadfoot (lol), and Crowfeather is smoky-gray (wiki info) with kinda-white face on one of the official art, not black, so with this retcon he can have a blue eyes

oh i know we know his family in the books, but they're not on this tree so we "don't know them" AKA their genes LOL. I don't give a shit about CF's family tree. Realistically, blue cats don't get as dark as Crowfeather is described, so black is his only real option. I didn't know his recent art shows him w/white... I don't like that :\ takes away his parallel to HL & BP. thnx for telling me about it tho! if someone decided to keep it they COULD give him blue eyes indeed...
If Crowfeather didn’t choose his own name I would bet that Tallstar would name him Crowfoot for the bit.

I absolutely love your character design, especially in terms of lineart/ faces! You make characters look related while still being unique and recognizable, which is hard to do imo
This was so much fun! You are by far the most knowledgeable person I’ve seen do this, which means you have more tools and tricks to make the characters look as much like their canon selves as possible. The back and forth up and down the family tree was also lots of fun, like a little puzzle, and you do a great job explaining and rehashing everything. I’m looking forward to the next one - whenever it comes out in the future. Tigerstar’s should logically be next, but I do hope you get around to Bluestar’s at some point.

I think it would be super interesting if you did the Bluestar family tree as it could actually be a 3 part series! Oakheart goes all the way back to Mapleshade, Bluefur has her family with and Snowfur and her family plus Thisleclaw (🤢) (who's sister is Rosetail and I think would be fascinating due to her unique pattering! Chimera? Tortie?), then the huge Whitestorm line through Sorreltail! (Personally I don't believe he was mates with Brindleface bc that screws up genes a lot down the road... Warriors get it together *please*.)

Oh that'd be fun!! Let's see... SF got all the same fawn-causing heterozygous-ness as LP, and BS can be carrying mc easily, so Lionblaze is a cakewalk _if_ BS can get b1 from somewhere - which he can! I have plans for Tigerstar ( ;) ) but Goldenflower could have it. He can also carry dilution easily so that's JF taken care of, and nonagouti, so that's HL too. And he's longhair, so that's actually easier than CF/LP for the longhair kiddos LOL. so I think all it'd take to make them work for BS/SF too is if Goldenflower gives her boi a b1 :D
I swear the next family tree video is going to be 3 hours, and 2.5 of it are going to be Hawkfrost & Mothwing.

I just started re-reading all the books (but in audio book form and I’m on the last book of power of three) and thinking back no, I don’t remember a mention of her having green eyes. I only read the first six books originally when I was in 6th grade lol and now I’m 24 so it had been awhile😂 Also, checking the warrior wiki they have never mentioned she had green eyes not even as a mistake. Their is a few fanart with Brightheart having green eyes to so maybe it was just one of those things where people drew Ravenpaw with purple eyes even though he like, obviously didn’t lol.

I love how this one actually stays as close to the canon as possible!!! Plus somali Firestar which is always a win. I know nothing of cat genetics and most of these types of vids will be like "well all of these cats are impossible and can't look like this" i'm like, oh well, the Erin's just make up appearances that they think just look cool anyway, I don't expect it to be genetically accurate. So seeing that it is possible to stick pretty close to canon is amazing.
Also, I took it upon myself to detangle the bloodlines for an AVOS rewrite and I solved the Ivypool/Fernsong dilemma by making Ivypool kiss Blossomfall and if I wanted Ivy's kits to be real I'd have them ask Fernyboy to get with Blossomfall as just a sire. Because. You know. Ivypool and Fernsong are related and therefore probably shouldn't kiss. Especailly since Ivypool just had a whole story arc about how her sister is related to Lionblaze. Hmm.
