Covering a range of different sub-genres, I rank 22 of the most significant Modern Dubstep LPs Tier List-style - from the absolutely masterful to the seriously questionable, and everything in between. Thoughts and opinions at the ready for what is sure to be a fiery discussion in the comments!

Would've personally put Mr. Bill's album on here as well as Phantasmagoria was 70/80% dubstep. Easy S for me. Zomboy outbreak also very solid choice!

Wholeheartedly agree! Even with it just being released last year I still thought it was timeless the first time I listened to it. I’ve heard a couple people even say it’s a bit of a “Dubstep history lesson” as it pulls from so many classic tropes of the genre (quite well) and presents a ton of fresh and clever ideas at the same time.
      Phantasmagoria 10/10

We Are Dust is a science fiction movie in an album and for a dubstep album to have a storyline to it is mind blowing. Absolutely phenomenal album and it deserves S tier so much. This album does what no other dubstep album does and that is something that can't be said regularly.

welcome reality is literally my fav edm album ever, so glad to see it at the top. another aspect i love about the album is that you can show it to people that dont listen to dubstep and not turn them off from it with too many abrasive, heavy, or unconventional sounds. even with the heavier songs, the catchy melodies and amazing vocals at the forefront alleviate some of those "harsher" moments for non-dubstep listeners

This is a massive video for sure. Out of all of the dubstep-focused albums that have come out, I think my favorite so far would be Art of the Devil by Code: Pandorum. It's an album with both superb, and somewhat meh songs, but the amount of modern deathstep material that's in there allows for my favorite genre of EDM to be pushed into the forefront a lot more. It's the style of music that I want to perfect for my own sound design the most, and while I have been improving on that front and as a producer overall, I still have much to learn and do for sure in order to get to where I truly want to be, and through this journey, this album serves as one of my role models. :)

Would love to see an ep tier list. Prod tier list would definitely be interesting might not be worth it😅. Also really good list. The only things I would really change is putting dogma resistance in A and uprising in S but teminite is my all time favorite artist so there's definitely some bias there lol.

  • @hauntedkrab
    @hauntedkrab 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Love the vid and editing! A couple things I'd love to give my take on,
I personally wouldn't have put Terravita's Rituals in E tier. I completely get it is pretty dated by todays standard but I remember when it came out, it felt really fresh sounding and exciting. Their style was distinct and flows over the whole album with some pretty great song ideas at the time. That being said, in terms of how much it's impacted the overall dubstep scene? Barely done anything except maybe inspire a subset of producers or listens (myself included) I would've given it atleast C or at lowest D tier.
Xilent's we_are_dust didn't grip me like We Are Virtual did when I first listened to it but I think bias aside, it definitely deserves at least A tier for all the things you've noted as well as it actually impacting Dubstep, especially the huge Colour Bass explosion we saw also being supported and driven by Au5, Ace Aura, Moore Kismet and many more.
I would have included Flux Pavilion's Blow The Roof as it is nearly all dubstep (8/10 tracks) and technically is classed as an album (has 10 tracks and considered it on most platforms as an album) and feel would sit at maybe B or even A tier. Still love this album to this day.
And this is more a personal one, Borgore's NEWGOREORDER used to be a guilty pleasure album mainly due to the heavyness and "Frat Bro" energy even though I'm far from that crowd. Noone really listened to the lyrics and with the world evolving and things changing, yeah I feel pretty uncomfortable hearing some of those lyrics nowadays. There are genuinely some decent tracks on it but I haven't revisited, let alone thought about this album for that long. I want to say Borgore has matured since then but I don't want to jinx it lol
I'd love to see an EP's version of this with definite inclusions from Fox Stevenson, Doctor P, Flux Pavilion, Foreign Beggars, Virus Syndicate, Mr Bill, Knife Party, MARAUDA, Trolley Snatcha and more

Loved hearing your thoughts on these albums, and I'm looking forward to checking out some of your top picks!
May be a little late for a mammoth comment, but I'll throw in my two cents about some modern dubstep albums.
I sort of feel the same in regards to not completely loving We Are Dust. By all logic, it's practically a perfect album (fantastic narrative, strong production, mad sound design), but something's missing. I propose it might be the variations within tracks?
Songs will normally take a good idea and stick with it, varying enough to be interesting but not necessarily exciting. Discarded, for example, has a strong idea that loops, has a hardcore switchup, has a swing switchup, and that's the track. It's quite well-executed, but could use more smaller ideas and broader variations to thrill. Or I'm barking up the wrong tree and it's flawless, idk.
As somebody who likes RIOT, you honestly hit it on the head with "heaviness for heaviness' sake." I hardly remember the core idea behind Jungle Fury - I just remember it for the shock value of its switch-ups. It's got great energy and theming, but it's hardly innovative.
I like Simulation simply because I'm a sucker for VR's sound, and Simulation is a neat package of that. Apparently Fork Funeral was supposed to be a Knife Party collab, but VR finished the song on his own last-minute to make the album deadline.
I think the knowledge that some of the album was rushed contextualizes some of the decisions for me. Parts like the second drop of So Sorry, last drops of Fork Funeral and Touhou Riddim feel pretty thrown-together. I personally enjoy them, as I've no issue with mindless heaviness and am stoked to hear VR's sound in any capacity. But I think that imprecision affects the technical quality a fair bit, which is why it wouldn't land as well for you.
In the end, different listeners will always have different values when it comes to music, which is where you see disagreement about what makes an album enjoyable. Either way, I really like hearing your perspectives and approve of the list! Also, respect to the editor for making the video look so smooth.

The point was having albums that are mostly dubstep. If something is mostly another genre, it isn’t mostly dubstep is it? That was the case with FP. At least half the tracks on Recess are Dubstep-leaning, that’s the difference.
It’s not about having ‘worthy choices’ more than it is variety placement-wise for a vid of that kind. Figure just has too many long-form projects to choose one from, like I said in the video

Regarding Code: Pandorum, Art of the Devil is right up there with The Lovecraftian Horrors, if not higher. His final LP as Code: Pandorum left a massive statement, featuring some of his best works such as Purpose and Fade to Black (the latter of which was one of your top 50 bass tracks of 2020). There are very few misses in this album, and many of the tracks here such as Art of the Devil and Soldiers have become anthems in the deathstep scene.
Art of the Devil would barely make it to A because of how much it now influences the deathstep scene in the 2020s.

Have you considered doing dubstep reviews for new albums? Like an Anthony Fantano kind of thing?

I really like this because now I'm interested into so many more dubstep producers. Especially Zomboy since he had this album at S tier and the video about him having rhe most unique album as well

The Outbreak by Zomboy is the definitive dubstep album ever made IMO. Immaculate production, variety on ideas and amazing drops. Saw him live when he released the album and it was one of the best nights of my life

Totally agreed about Dodge and Fuski. They were my favourite band in 2010-2013, python/sick/come together was just brilliant. But after "divorce", things get awfully "memetic" and clowny. Last flash in the darkness - Pretty Good EP, and my personal banger of all time - Comeback. I was overhyped by this and wanted LP so badly. And I got this. Greatest album of all time killed my 8-years long love for dupstep in 1 hour. I will not be the same basshead again.

I know it's not an album, but I think Knife Party's Rage Valley should've been included here, they also contributed a ton to build modern Dubstep's sound

some of us like aimless heaviness. tho yea i agree with your assessment on sullivan king, his drops are usually meh but he does have enough very good ones to where i wouldn't put him anywhere below C tier

I would’ve put Ganja White Night on at least once. I think Mystic Herbalist and Addiction put their sound on display perfectly and really make them stand out from others. However, I have noticed you don’t talk about them in your videos that I’ve seen. Any reason? I could just be biased because I really love their sound.

The only thing I don’t agree with Nawtystep is Borgore. I do understand why this artist gets criticized a lot. Not all of his tracks are bad.
All the Borgore tracks that were featured on UKF Dubstep I consider those his best tracks! Decisions as well I think its one of the better tracks from him, not too explicit as some of his other ones. Borgore can surprise me once in a while cause when it is a good non explicit track Borgore can shine! Wish he made more like Big Bad!
Plus Decisions is part of UKF Dubstep 2012 which is my favorite Dubstep Compilation Album of all time! Perfect track list IMO
Other than Borgore this video was very well put together and I am happy Nawtystep put Nero Welcome Reality on S tier! Same opinion it is my favorite EDM Album of all time. While some albums in this list I don’t really care for I respect his opinion
While Nawtystep is a critic I never saw him as a type of person who harassed others for enjoying artists/albums he can’t. I like the way he speaks makes me jealous on how good he can speak about his point of view without being toxic

Raise The Black Flag I feel would have still been a better choice. It takes the quirkiness of modern Teminite and turns it up to 11. Not to mention overall far superior production and an incredible second half. Sound design in The Kraken, Electroctopi, and Thundering Typhoons is incredible.

    The Outbreak in S tier.
Understanding you're a Zomboy fan, but this is maybe a little too much... As a Getter massive fan, I wouldn't give Radical Dude a perfect score.
In my personal opinion, We_Are_Dust should have been switched with The Outbreak.
