The improv. It was a difficult choice, but the reason is a question of value. When you were playing the cover portion, I had a difficult time being certain that you were in fact being strictly "faithful" to the original, though it sounded like it. It's complex, the dissonance, while delightful, causes a weaker mnemonic link for me that I think a simpler (from a Western popular music point of view) piece would. Regardless of how closely you stuck to the original material, it was wonderful, and rich with a harsh beauty that fits what I think of when I think of that piece. The improv though, took me by surprise. It starts much gentler, using only hints of dissonance, an exotic season to be measured carefully. You also almost immediately work in a theme from a completely different work of Trent's, and then go on to incorporate very familiar phrases from Rock/Metal/etc., and all of this gives a soothing feeling. An invitation to explore with you without the challenge to the ear that the cover had. But then you layer in more dissonance, adding it in like a chef, making the piece spicier, recalling the original. Good improv on a theme, imho, does all of these things. The set up, the first leg of the journey, then returning home. Still, there was farther to go, and it felt soft, like at the start, touching on the original themes, but with far less dissonance and a healthy dose of grace. The ending was sublime, not using that word to be cute, but because it is the best word for what I'm thinking/feeling. It was a continuation of the grace from the second leg, softening, fading gradually, and then finished. It leaves the listener clear that the journey is finally, truly over. So, the improv had so much more value, to me, because of all of the other things you added to it. Sure, I love the original work, but I can listen to that any time I want. A cover often seeks to change the original, to make it the new artist's own expression. That's the difference between a talented musician doing a "cover" and a bar band playing hits. Your improv, though, was this new "thing", your new creation. It's elements were in good balance, it kept moving, evolving, without leaving us confused or left behind. You gave a piece of yourself to that in a way that you intentionally withheld from the cover portion, which is exactly what you intended, as that's how you set the stage for what this was going to be. Loved both. The improv had more value to me. Thank you.
This is amaizing. If it weren't for you I wouldn't have been able to introduce my friends to NIN. You helped me in showing them the complexity and beauty of Trent's music. You are amazing! Keep up the excelent work. :D
I believe my stance is in support of variations on a theme by Reznor. This is up there with hurt and everything in its right place as far as my favorites of yours.
Your piano imterpretations are hypnotic. I could easily listen to an entire album of them. Most of the time I have no comprehension of what you are saying with your breakdowns (non musician here), yet at the same time you've helped me understand exactly what it is about NIN that I love so much about them. Can't wait to hear more from "The Fragile" from you.
The improv is so SO good! The Big Come Down is built around drums, synths, and the muted guitar playing that lets off-key notes work with the wider piece. Trying a piano cover that's faithful to the original creates a dissonance that doesn't *quite* work for me. But your improv does!
@@iximusic I think that's the best thing you could do honestly. It's like when a movie is adapted from a book... readers want a faithful recreation but moviegoers want a good movie. I think your covers are like those really exceptional adaptations that can make everyone happy because the love you have for the source is so goddamn obvious! Also while I have your attention, could you PLEASE do something talking about Now I'm Nothing?! This was such an amazing little piece but I never find any good covers of it and I'm always left wanting more. Love you!
Awesome job! I'll simply parrot the many comments below and echo the sentiment that, without taking anything away from the great cover, your improve was incredible. Thank you for sharing your talents, and I look forward to your videos! Cheers
Ok… I’m am just obsessed with all of your videos. It’s so good. I love have you break these songs down. I’ve been playing music for over twenty years, but never piano. I’ve just started learning piano and the way you go through all of it on piano has helped me immensely. Also can you tell me what beautiful blue microphone you have been using for your channel is it’s amazing. Thank you for being so passionate about all of this.

The chorus sounds beautiful here
Sweet lovely dissonance
f@cking lovely!!!!! i wanna see you on the NiN stage like a special guest :)
I think I'd faint 😅
Kicking ass as usual ixi! @-,-;-------
Yes please, more meandering improvs! I love it when you put your skill on full display with the improv playing.
🙏
Honestly makes me wonder how there isn't already an album of pure piano covers of NIN songs. These are always such a highlight of this channel.
Maybe something to work toward for 2022? 😅
That would be right where it belongs!!

Every track off the fragile is my favorite song. So, again, you finally did my favorite song.
Edit: Yes, even Big Man
This is one of my favorite songs on the album. It seemed so out of place at the time, for me. I grew to love it.
i wish trent see your videos. ❤️
THIS IS GOLD ! ! ! My favorite song out of The Fragile! Thank you for this!
Wow i've never thought this could be arranged in this way into a powerful piano piece.
This channel is officially one of the best things out of this pandemic. Just wow. The improv is so good.
Absolutely beautiful! I wish I had your skill. Really cool mix on a great song. You and Trent should do a calibration, that would be awesome.

That's fair! I prefer improvising but I feel this "duty" sometimes to give fans something they recognize more easily and can sing along to.
