Gen 9/paldea is My Favorite Current Region in Terms Of Pokémon Designs, The Pokémon introduced in Gen 9 Were Awesome, koraidon & miraidon Were My Favorite Legendary Pokémon, PLUS OVERALL My Favorite Pokémon introduced in Gen 9. They're Awesome & Have Awesome Design & Lore Of Being Legendary Dragon Types From The Past & The Future. They Are The Best Boxart Legendaries Design Wise. The Concept Of Paradox Pokémon is Awesome. But it’s Hard To Find A Bad Pokémon Design Besides A Few, quaquaval is My Least Favorite Starter in Gen 9, The Design is My Least Favorite, dudunsparce is so not creative for An EVOLVED FORM Of A Gen 2 Pokémon, Just Adds A New Segment and it’s a New Pokémon Now. And dudunsparce SHOULD HAVE BEEN NORMAL/DRAGON Type & Have A More Unique Design From its PRE EVOLVED FORM. Another Pokémon That is Boring For Me is squawkabilly, squawkabilly is One Of My Least Favorite Pokémons in Gen 9. A Bad Designed Pokémon. Other Than Those Two, The Roster Of New Pokémon Were Awesome, koraidon & miraidon Were My Favorite Boxart Legendary Pokémon, Their Designs Were Awesome, Being Ancient Dragons From The Distant Past & Robotic Future Dragon From The Far Future it’s Awesome & An Easy God Tier For Me, Other Awesome Pokémons Like chien-pao Which is My Favorite Sub-Legendary Pokémon introduced in Gen 9, baxcalibur is Now One Of My Favorite Pseudo Legendary Pokémon Ever, it’s Design is Awesome. So it’s kinda hard to find a Bad Designed Pokémon in Gen 9 Cause Most Of Them Were Awesome.
So I’m creating a Pokémon and I have a lot of the stats done for the Pokémon but… I’m not a very good drawer so I was wondering if you could help me design it?
I think shroodle was supposed to be based off an old graffiti piece. It was a man with a long round nose that said 'Harold was here' or something like that, I can't remember the name. Apparently it was popular to draw the man on different surfaces with the same sentence near it
@@adventuringjay8401 Killroy. And wow, yeah, that kinda makes sense. Never thought of that connection. But the big nose and pupils, plus the fact shrewdle is pretty much just a head, it really makes sense as a refrence.
Palpitoad’s “half-evolved-ness” might actually be intentional, cause it reminds me of those tadpoles which have sprouted legs but not arms and just look kind of awkward
24:16 I think Enamorus' lipstick marking is also based on the mouth tattoos of Ainu women (a practice which was done to repel demons of disease), which is why it points out at the sides. It would be nice if the modelers kept the lip marking as a flat texture instead of puffing them out, but they probably did that to make it a bit closer to the other Forces of Nature's "facial hair"
Regarding Eternatus, here is its Shield Pokedex description: "It was inside a meteorite that fell 20,000 years ago. There seems to be a connection between this Pokémon and the Dynamax phenomenon." So yeah, it's not a ton of backstory but I think alien biology gives us a pass on the non-standard design, especially considering it's entirely responsible for gen 8's gimmick. This thing needed to look both otherworldly and powerful and *boy* did they achieve that with Eternatus in my opinion.
"Crabby is just a Crab!" Yeah, reminds me that Crabby's Japanese name is in fact"Crab". I don't think Sugimori was subtle he was just drawing a normal Crab.
While I have no interest in using Sawk and Throh, I actually like their goofy Muppet vibe. Considering the Muppets originate from America, it kinda works. The positive feelings I get when looking at the Muppets transfers to these two. I actually like most of the Unova Pokémon. Gurdurr is awkward and the Pidove line other than Pidove doesn’t do much for me. With the starters I liked them, then didn’t like them, and recently came to love them again.
I think Pawmot is fine design, it' just looks more like mid-evo. Pawmo is what's wrong with that line. If Pawmi evolved straight into Pawmot or it got evo afterwards, then it would be better
I remember hearing this quote from one of the higher ups at GF when they hired a bunch of new artists during the Let's go Pikachu/Eevee era They basically said "Don't design a Pokémon, but rather, design something that would FIT into the world of Pokémon''
I think some of your criticisms like ‘lack of pattern’ is less intense than you make it out to be. I’ve noticed you add a lot of unnecessary patterns to convey a type just to fill up a blank space. Pawmot and Sneasler do not need added patterns. That would not change any of the other complaints you had about them, and might even make them too cluttered to be creature designs.
The reason golem looks so different is because it was intended to be traded for machamp that’s why his final evolution looks so different if you put both evolutionary lines side by side you can see they switched parts machamp got 2 of gravelers arms and golem got machokes lizard face
Is there an in game trade between a Machoke and Graveller? If so then this has some merit but if not it just seems random and confusing when you factor in Golem can be made by trading with literally everything unlike Shelmet and Karrablast
Really wish there was some lore that Eternatus is an Ultra Beast. Would have 100% made its design and G-max form make more sense for its odd and yet badass appearance. Like it wrecked havoc on another world and got beaten and banished into the SwSh world. Then when it reawakened it brought about the first Darkest Day, and really hammers home why G-max/D-max is incredibly foreign to just Galar as it’s origins of power are from another dimension! :D
I think the worst of 4th gen is Lickilicky. I don't get what they were thinking making that the evolution to Likitung, how? It basically went from elephant/rhino featured humanoid thing with a stupidly long toungue that looked as formidable as it does goofy and endearing and they basically de-evolved it wall-e style, making it's features much softer and stumpier. I get that it's rotund from overeating I guess, but that's a concept that could be better explored in better ways I feel, like maybe let it retain some definition in it's legs at least instead of making them look like they'll buckle the second they hop off a mobility scooter.
I think that the design is going for a more “Hansel an Gretel” sort of look and Macaroni fashion as well as the paintings of fat men in fancy 18th century clothes. It makes sense considering that Lickitung is all about licking and eating eventually becoming rotund.
imma be real Eternatus is sick yes, it doesn't look like a pokemon, but just think for a sec. Eternatus is the skeleton of a 3000 year old calamity dragon, who in the world would think that concept would end up looking natural in anyway shape or form.
The thing about the Krabby/Crabrawler comparison wasn't that Krabby was a better design, but that the technical skill and the flavor put into the older concept art made these creatures look like _living creatures_ while all the rounder shapes lacking roughness in newer versions of what should be anatomically similar creatures make them look more like plastic toys.
Yeah, a big thing that needs to be addressed when talking about gen 1 and 2, is outside of the original gameboy versions, their designs all change so much, i love the original art, they had such character and emotion i don't dislike the gba versions of them, but it simplified them and made them "cleaner" and transitioning to 3d, they lost so much of there depth and soul, making a lot of them look basic and boring. which i don't think is fair to their original sprites :')
yes and no, i dont think its a fair comparison since a lot of gen 1 and 2 mons were made as sprites first and with the restrictions of gb pallet and pixel density. As early as gen 3 you can see the modern design quirks of Pokemon. You have to admit, something like Tailow is a lot closer to something like Rookidee than Pidgey is. A lot of original 251 mons got shafted in the frlg art and modern iterations in terms of their bubbly personalities-post ruby sapphire pokemon art ruined a lot of mons. I think an especially egregious example is Mr Mime, because the original depiction of him being shorter, chubbier, and with 4 digits instead of 5 makes him a lot more likeable imo. I absolutely believe that if Krabby were designed even as far back as gen 3 or 4, people would not be making this argument.
@@ShirotheWiseWolfexactly. The artists should do as much as they can to make them look like the originals. Just do an image search for charizard and tell me the original Pokémon tv show version doesn’t look the best, with the most personality in the face and more rugged organic body shape.
I know I am in the minority, but I always disagree when people place Delphox in a bad design list. I personally like it a lot and it is my favorite of the Kalos starters final evolutions
Yeah, I definitely don't get all the delphox hate. It's definitely the least unpleasant of the anthropomorphic fire starters, and it's bizarre that people only fault it for being bipedal but love braixen. Really, what did delphox do to anybody?
I really liked Delphox when I first saw the design but after several videos which have included criticism I get that the design's not so much completely bad but it just could have been better. Took me a while but I think when you understand the criticism, you can see it.
I love Herdier so much. You said it doesn't have expression, but look at its stern and protective face. You said it's just a Yorkshire terrier, but look at that cool cape made from its own fur. Plus, it's just appealing all around!
As I did during the stream, I'd like to defend Herdier. It looks like a policeman due to the colour scheme, which is logical as it is used by the police in the Unova region. Its Pokédex entry refers to the fur on its back as impervious to damage. It is clearly based on a bullet-proof vest. It could also be a reference to a superhero's cape, which also makes sense since the US is known for its superhero comics. A lot of those heroes are depicted as living in New York (which is what Unova is based on) or a city that has clear inspiration from New York. Police are a form of heroes, so there's a connection there as well. The moustache and eyebrows may be based on a terrier, but they also allude to a stern human man who's giving you a look of disapproval, sort of like a disapproving father. 👨 Its entry mentions that it can help its trainer raise their other Pokémon, which is probably a reference to that. This also ties in with it being a herding dog as they help their owners with taking care of farm animals. As for not being as interesting as it potentially could be, that's the case for a lot of Normal-type Pokémon. I would, in fact, say that it's a standard trait for a lot of them. The Meowth line (literally just cats with forehead decor), the Litleo line (although it ties in fire, it still looks like a relatively normal lion), etc. Also, most birds who are part Normal are very simple and similar to their real-life counterparts. Pidgie is the most obvious example. Then again, what makes sense to me doesn't make sense to everyone, so there's that.
Yeah... Herdier might seem basic, but it's a solid design! It also adds up ad it has moustaches growing, which continue to grow when it evolves into a Stoutland! Herdier is a good design, and Herdier makes me feel i can trust him, and, design-wise, i sometimes prefer him over his evolution Stoutland, which has these big moustaches after evolving from Herdier, but the Sun and Moon anime made Stoutland popular because of the Litten episode. But i can see why some people may think Herdier is too basic!!! I still think that, design-wise, it's still better then other Pokemom!!!
I love Herdier, I think he is adorable. He's just a doggo with a mustache and a fluffy cape. Lillipup's line was my favorite for a long time, I had a Stoutland on my first ever team :')
I just don't understand the aromatisse design issues. Like do people hate it and have a bias so strong against it just because it didn't become a plague doctor? I'm not an aromatisse stan either, but I just can't comprehend how the round puffball cancan perfume with a beak is so offensive to the community.
Well, it’s more that it had a lot of design aspects and almost none of them made it through in the design. Visually, nothing about it say’s plague doctor, perfume, flamingo, or masquerade. And on top of that, it adds in a cancan dancer aspect which doesn’t really mesh with the other design concepts. I’m personally fine with the design but I have to admit that it isn’t a good one.
I actually quite like aromatisse, but I think perhaps the reason people don't like it is the mismatch of colors? Though you can excuse that they didn't really execute what they intended, it shows through a little bit in some mismatched aspects and colors
Mainly due to how it looks unappealing compared to its pre-evolution. The plague doctor inspiration isn’t bad but it doesn’t look pleasant and expected.
i think its more because some elements point to it trying to be a pretty/elegant pokemon maybe even suggestive with the leg sticking out, but the roundness and big nose throw that off and make it a bit uncomfortable bc its not what those people see as attractive or pretty? idk// i always liked her at least more than others but when ron said "maybe she's just trying her best" or something that made me like her even more lmaoo
I am the BIGGEST Slurpuff defender out there. It's a silly little dog thing made out of desserts, which I think isn't even CLOSE to a bad concept. It's not exactly intimidating and it's not the cutest thing in the dex, but i feel like so many people hate on it purely because it has to be associated with Aromatisse. Slurpuff also has one of my favorite color schemes out of all the pokemon. Pink, white and red is a great color combo and i wish that people could appreciate this silly little pokemon with the respect it deserves.
If I remember correctly Eternatus came from a meteor, and that combined with it being the only known source of Dynamax energy and Galar particles in the whole world could mean it has extraterrestrial origins like the Ultra Beasts, to explain its design
couldnt disagree more on eternatus, it’s one of my favourite pokemon designs and i think its concept is executed exceptionally well. it’s an otherworldly, skeletal dragon, built of shapes unfamiliar to the life on our world, yet still having the motif of a grasping skeletal hand. the whole point is that it’s unsettling and doesn’t feel like it should exist, it’s a terror from beyond the stars. if you can defend pokemon by saying “that’s the concept it was going for”, then im doing that for my boy eternatus.
Gonna go to bat for the Paldea-mons here: - Bramblin I don't think is any more basic than like a Morelull or Bounsweet. All are simple plantlike creatues who are small and cute. - Squawkabilly's whole thing is that they form large gangs, so I can't really imagine what a huge flock of them would look like if they all had these intricate patterns. Would probably look way too busy is what I'm thinking. - Bellibolt's mascot-like appearance is kinda the point. It's the signature Pokemon of the egirl. Think of all the cute animal emotes on livestreaming platforms, they don't all have the most realistic animal proportions. Bellibolt also takes inspiration from the famous Pacman frog, a round little blob of an animal with stubby little limbs, and this connection with Pacman further ties back into the mascot aesthetic. - I've heard a theory that the Pawmi line is based on a shonen anime character arc. Pawmi is when the protagonist is at their youngest and weakest, no training whatsoever. Think Child Goku. As Pawmi trains, it evolves into Pawmo. Since training, its gotten a lot stronger, actually developing something of a fighting style, hence gaining the Fighting-type. It's the same Pawmi we all know and love, just a little more mature and capable. Upon finishing its training, Pawmo evolves into Pawmot. Its golden hair now spikes upward akin to a Super Saiyan, and its larger muscles allude to its higher power level. Despite all the increases in power and combat ability though, it's still the same Goku / Pawmi / other protagonist we know and love. I mean they did make this line the signature Pokemon of Nemona, who has all the energy of a Goku-type character. I love the designs from Scarlet and Violet all around. They weren't afraid to push the envelope.
I like this theory about pawmot. I never got the hate over its simple design. Plus it's a pika clone, which don't usually evolve so they finally made one worth using, while keeping that concept in the design
@@Th1rt3en-KI'll have you know my Plusle and Minun have gotten through the Elite Four and become Champions. Smh (I get it though they're usually all single stage mon with abysmal stats)
Finally a list about the worst Pokémon designs that isn't just, "oh, I hate this design so it goes on the list." You really nailed this video. Many of these Pokémon I actually really like and I still agree with you.
I feel like I’m the only one who really loves Pawmot. I think it’s fine to have simple evolutions (look back at Gen 1 stuff like the Cleffa line) even this late in the series. It can be both cute and tough, as seen in its official art. It looks very friendly, but can beat you up. Its hands being like those electrical pads doctors use is very clever given it learns Revival Blessing
As you scroll through the comments you will come to the realization that he created an angry raging mob just by criticizing this one Pokemon. There might be need for an apology video. 😂
I personally think that Pawmot gets too much hate. I never thought that evolutions had to change a lot when they evolve. I mean heck look at Kadabra and Alakazam, hardly anything changes aside from an extra spoon and no tail, so this isn't their first time doing a minimal change evolution. I think it's cute and I want it to be my friend.
Im going to argue that Pidgy as a pokemon is basically fine. It serves as just one of the pokemon you meet that's just... an animal but more but where usually Pokemon picks Just an Animal but Cartoony Pidgy is Just an Animal, but it fights it looks like just a bird but it looks scrappy and like this is a creature where its ok to right it cause... that's a Fight Club Bird
I still want to see you draw furniture as Pokemon: Lava Lamp as an Electric/Fire type Grandfather clock or Cuckoo Cuckoo Clock Baby crib that evolves into a regular bed and then evolves into a King Size Bed
Someone honestly explain to me please why Delphox gets this much hate. One of my favorite starters and I absolutely love the design. What exactly did people expect here that they are so disappointed in this Pokemon?
@@Jarino507But what about Incineroar or Ciderace? I feel like they are well liked. I don't like them but for other reasons. So is it really the humanoid thing? I don't think it is the feminine thing because the second evolution is well liked and how is it so much different to the fully evolved one? I know the sprite animation was crap but people really don't like the whole design it seems like.
@@joanna2787 There's nothing wrong with you liking them. But the fact we've basically only had humanoid starters since gen 6 has gotten a lot of people bitter.
Usually, when I a Pokémon desgin is really uninspiring to me, or even ugly, I like to give them a chance in fight to redeem themselves. Using a Pokémon you don't normally use on your team can dramatically alter your perception of them, and that's what happened to me with the likes of Klinklang and Venomoth. I really love both of those Pokémon nowadays, which kid me would be shocked to know! Sooooo... I decided to be really bold, and gave a shot to Pawmot by using it on my first main team in Pokémon Scarlet. And it quite displeases me to say that it is the first instance of me ever using a Pokémon "that I don't like" that actively lead to me disliking it more!
Am I the only one who loved Bruxish from the start? I myself have some bruxism and loved it, the colors add to the tropical feeling of it and the expression is full of personality.
i loooved bruxish when we first got photos of it. it just feels so rare to have a pokemon with so many colors. they tend to stick to limited color palettes for most oft he designs so i love how colorful it is
The Krabby thing highlighted an issue I have with art discourse The mindset that rounded design are inherently bad and angular designs are inherently good
It definitely seems to be a nostalgia issue, as a lot of people miss the rougher, more monstrous feel of the gen 1 pokémon and find the more recent softer designs seem like sellouts because they seem more built to be made into toys.
@@jaschabull2365 a mindset people have had since Gen 4. But now that’s part of the “non-sell our days.” I guess that applies to other place I’ve seen it. People preferring the angular designs of 90s and 2000s cartoons Vs the rounded designs of the 2010s and beyond.
@@jaschabull2365gen 1 sold so many toys even of weird Pokemon. Like I distinctly remember having a lil plastic krabby toy. This feels like a weird critique that uses nostalgia blindness to try and say opinions as objective
@@redtutel I mean I can't help find something a bit ironic about this considering how notoriously commercialized 80s media was. Maybe there is a bit of late-stage capitalism going on nowadays (ok, definitely in terms of the corner-cutting displayed in Pokémon's current game development) but I have to wonder how much the notion could be chalked up to people being older and more aware of the commercial aspect than they were in their nostalgic days.
Dude... I totally buy the whole idea ugliness doesn't mean bad design, but we still have different tastes and opinions about how a Pokemon should have been. Let's point out some ideas. 2:04 Very controversial statement, once Pidove looks like even more similar to a real world animal than Pidgey, but somehow you choose to defend it at 16:33, describing it has more personality for unknown reasons. Yes.. the Pidove's heart-shaped chest is a subtle cool touch (its pink cere not so much though), just like the black marks over Pidgey's sharp eyes, a feature that links it with Egyptian mythology that becomes clearer in the next stages. 2:58 Tangela's alternative design is a downgrade. Despite the lack of cartoonish shoes, it fails to give the slimy essence of chaotic vines in motion. It looks like too neat for a swampy creature. Tangrowth is worse than Tangela in every single aspect. Its chubby and short legs and uncovered waist fall short of Tangela's mysterious nature. By the way, even the vines don't blend naturally in its body. 4:52 It's not a trick. In terms of design, I choose Krabby over Crabrawler any day. At least, Krabby fits organically in nature while it has unique aspects which distinguish it from real crabs, like its spooky eyes and its promenient fangs. Crabrawler's exotic appearance resembles more a commercial plastic toy than an organic but still fantastic living thing. 5:41 Although I'm not into Mr.Mime, I'm sure it was always supposed to be intentionally creepy just like Banetta is. His dorky movements might imply Mr.Mime is actually a possessed puppet. 6:05 Actually Persian is perfectly okay for the franchise, just like Ekans, Kakuna and Venomoth. Not every Pokemon is supposed to look like an abomination or snakes who baffle fire. 6:49 Alolan Muk better than Muk? Just because its rainbow chaotic colors and little rocks around its body? Geezz... different strokes for different folks. 12:04 I'm astonishing how you could give Probopass a pass after all. Its design is even worse than Jynx. That mustache is totally out of place, with an unpleasant resemblance to snot and big nose hair. Unnecessarily gross!!! That big nose is over the top and completely ruins the concept of those other mini-faces, since their design don't even match with the North one. It is not even about ugliness; it's about bad choices about how to design it. Nosepass may be odd, but it was a cool design. Probopass is just one of the worst Pokemons ever created. 12:14 Lumineon is not even boring. It achieves to get an appealing design, distinguish from real fish and still fit naturally with a natural marine creature. Good Pokemon to say the least. 12:30 Magmortar's intentional hideousness doesn't excuse him for questionable traits. Why does it have creepy pink lips instead of a pluckered beak? It becomes even worse if we take into consideration Magmortar has a dark face unlike its previous line. Magmortar reaches an undesirable zone where it doesn't look like cool or badass (like Magmar) due to its rounded shaped body and neither a compelling and attractive design (like Magby). Magmar deserved a better evolution. 15:00 I disagree. Its mustache, its untidy dark blue fur covering its body, the three pointed eyebrow... I can see its personality only looking at him and Herdier successfully caters to a natural transition between the innocent Lillipup and the imposing Stoutland. 21:06 Oh my god!!! Crabominable's repulsiveness doesn't give it a free card to be so terribly designed. Look at Omastar, Victrebeel, Claydol and Trevenant. They all are supposed to be ugly and creepy but none of them own a bad design. That goofy hairstyle, dorky eyes and... BRATS??? Seriously? Is it supposed to be abominable or incredibly stupid? Those muscular arms don't make any sense at all... There were so many ways to create a freaky crabmonster objectively much better than Crabominable. Every fan-art I've ever seen were better designed than it without losing the concept behind it. I can't see how someone this thing was a clever idea. Crabominable's existence itself is an offense for Pokemon universe. 22:41 At this point, I'm not even surprised about Ultra Beasts defence... after all, the fact Licklicky and Galarian Fossils weren't even mentioned and likes of Conkeldurr and Quilladin got a pass. 30:24 GOLDHENGO NATURALLY FEELS LIKE A POKEMON WORLD??? Seriously, I can't stand anymore. BYE!!! XD
i swear they only made Milcery to make use of the spinning mechanic, Alcremie would have been just fine on its own as a customisable, decoratable Pokémon
Lumineon isn’t even boring at least by the standards of fish Pokémon. It incorporates the concepts of both deep sea and reef fish and is also a pun on “butterflyfish” having fins that are actually butterfly like (as opposed to real butterflyfish, which look more like angelfish or similar reef fish.) It has a mix of concepts and is actually pretty interesting, apart from its typing. That’s its one flaw, they should’ve given it fairy type in gen 6. Would’ve fit well since it’s bioluminescence would be fitting of moves like moonlight, moonblast, and dazzling gleam. Also fairies are depicted often with butterfly wings so that ties the connection together. Would’ve made this Pokémon stand out more like it deserves to, because it is interesting. But with VERY bad stats, a mono type of the most common type in the game, and stuck at the end of the gen 4 dex, I see why people overlook it so much. It deserves so much better.
I never had an issue with Jynxs "dress" as it to me is believably part of it, just the boob part takes me out of it. And why not make it more white or light blue?
As a Gen 5 starter enjoyer, I’m so glad to see you defend them. Especially Emboar, since I feel like it would get less hate if it wasn’t the third Fire/Fighting starter.
I think the Kling line partially exists just to show off gen 5’s new graphics. As Kling the gears spin at a steady pace, but Klang’s larger gear slows them down. The new gear added to Klingklang speeds them back up to regular speed. Still don’t think it justifies the design. If you wanna show off your graphics, make a good design to show them off with instead of a tech demo with eyes.
Considering Eternatus arrived in a meteor and has a red and blue color scheme, I think it has some kind of connection with Deoxys. It's a skeletal poison type and Deoxys was a mutated space virus, so perhaps what arrived on Earth is the aftermath of an otherworldly pandemic that ravaged this species and made it a shell of its former self. Or maybe Eternatus WAS an Ultra Beast at one point whose dimension was ravaged by the Deoxys virus arriving in their world. If the Delta Episode of ORAS is anything to go by, Eternatus could even be a mutated fusion of Deoxys and Rayquaza from a timeline where the two literally collided.
As a Gen 7 fan, Ultra-Beast Lives Matter is the best thing I've heard all day. Edit: When will people realise that Coalossal was intended to represent a furnace? Which makes perfect sense? A steam train Pokémon probably would've been difficult to pull off, so having a kaiju furnace instead works well. Besides, now we have Gen 9, I think a train would work best as an evolution for Revavroom.
I never ever knew why golem look so different until you look into the evolution method and then makes sense: Graveler 4 arms, machoke reptile like; transfer them machamp gets the second set of arms and Gollem becomes more reptile like, "gene splicing" anyone? Thanks to Lockstin & Gnoggin for the explanation.
I know you've already done some of them, but I'd love to see you take a crack at redesigning these not that you've identified what doesn't work for you. Your opinions are very well-formulated and I would find it interesting to see them applied practically in this way
Aromatisse should have been a mix of a flamingo and a plague doctor, also Jynx should get another form to end all the controversy, i like all pokemon but also think some of the design had potential that wasn't explored to it's max.
@@carnage0685I don't think so either but I've seen a lot of people hate on the game and say it sucked for some reason. I think the games are fantastic apart from being so slow
Another thing I'd add about Enamorus is the lips being the same color as the hair made me think for awhile that it had a moustache and not lips, i feel like they should have maybe used the darker pink color of the design for the lips instead.
i have a new respect for aromatisse after getting a shiny one, and while sunflora is just a sunflower the face reminds me of clay garden stakes! great video as always man
I love Krabby because of its cute proportions, and design and I believe that krabby is more so meant to represent the smaller and simpler creatures in the Pokémon world, while still giving them personality. but I think that may be mainly because of ash’s krabby in the anime. I know it’s just a crab, but it has some personality to me and it’s cute and nostalgic and I’m biased 😂 also PALPITOAD IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE POKÉMON. I LOVE THE WHOLE LINE. I also really like crabominable, his concept is brilliant and well designed to me
I think Pawmi should've just evolved straight into Pawmot, personally. Or just have Pawmot be a standalone without any pre-evolutions and put three times as much time into its design.
Eternatus looks like an Ultra Beast, and IM SURE thats intentional. Bramblin should have some "ghostly gas" like Gastly in the interior to make it more like a creature rather than some dried weed or something
Bro Pawmot is the goat gen 9 pokemon he is so fuzzy and cute while also being strong and powerful as well as having a defibrillator theme with its hands. It is super underrated.
14:51 Pidgey looks nearly exactly like a House Sparrow - it looks just like a female with an added black mask. House Sparrows are one of the most common bird species on Earth.
Indeed very common. Native to most of Eurasia and northern Africa and introduced to the Americas, south Africa and Australia. But it isn't common in east Asia, which means the designer had to get a round quite a bit.
I'm a big fan of Mr. Mime as well as Jynx and will alway be defending them! I just love how they make people uncomfortable. Go you little creepy weird happy confusing clown thing. And you Jynx... I don't even know what to say about you really and I love it. I just love your confusing weirdness. Also I just loved Mr. Mime in the Detective Pikachu movie. It had so much personality! Really hoped it would grow on people more after that. But I'm sure it has it's fans.
I honestly agree with almost everything you've said and your explanations (although I'm not as forgiving of the dishonorable mentions tbh lol) Great vid!
I don’t care what people say but Inteleon and Samurott are AWESOME and I will defend them with my life!!! Inteleon is literally a spy that uses finger gun has actual pistols and when it gigantamax it turns into a freakin sniper! Samurott is even cooler since it freakin has dual wielding shell katanas and Hisuian forms is even more badass since not only a evil samurai but the blade on its shell can be broken off and embedded into its opponents body which mean it can takes forever to heal.
This is gonna be really controversial but Aromatisse is a Pokémon i like i think it looks cute and honestly ive started to like it more and more over the years
Yeah I'm also an Aromatisse defender, it's cute and good for a pokemon based primarily on fragrances and cosmetics. I think people saw Spritzee's big sniffer and got so caught up on the idea of getting a plague doctor fairy (cant blame em, cool concept), that when the evo didn't match their expectations they just wrote the mon off entirely. Sorta like how Coalossal "should've been a train"
Not everything has to be fantastical. Krabby just looks better than crabrawler to most people. Its like clothes. The best design people like is not always the crazy wild green and pink bubble wrap dress at an experimental fashion show
Exectly, that’s why i dont like this type of best and worst designs videos, while they claim they are not biased i actually think on a great mayority this videos will have a lot of biased opinions or they just dont understand the desing, but meh i agree on some of this and disagree on a lot of other
I disagree, Crabrawler has more inspiration put into it, while Krabby is literally a crab. Even something small like a color change could have helped, but it just looks like a real life crab to me
I will be the Pawmot defender. Pawmi is super adorable and Pawmot is a perfect evolution to it, I think that if Pawmo was removed people would have way less of a problem with it. To me Pawmot is not only really cute and well proportioned, but it's definitely leagues better than a lot of the mid we got in gen 9. I will die on that hill.
I mostly agree with the earlier ones. A lot of your picks for gen 3 and 4, I actually like, especially the bugs, though I guess a lot of what I like about them is situational more than anything I objectively admire about their designs. As for ambipom, I was going to say that the nose may be a reference to a snub-nosed monkey, but considering the main concept of aipom is to be an exaggeration of a prehensile tail, it doesn't even make that much sense to add old-world monkey design elements. And I'd actually say taillow looks even more like just a cartoon bird than pidgey, which, as you mentioned, doesn't look exactly like any specific bird, while taillow's pretty much a one-to-one with an actual swallow. I actually like enamorus, and am to this day pretty strongly convinced that people are biased against it due to its being shown as a 3d model first rather than as a drawing, as just about any other pokémon is. I see the seemingly incongruous design elements as suitable for it as the Love Hate Pokémon, hence its combining pretty characteristics with unappealing ones. I guess bruxish is also kind of meant to have that flashy-yet-unappealing look to it, so I'd say it's debatable that it qualifies due to its arguably hitting the mark it was going for by not looking particularly attractive, even if a lot of its features are traditionally used as pretty signifiers. I'd say a comparable pokémon that probably does fail design-wise is jynx, considering its origin of a mountain hag means its design elements evoking seductiveness don't really suit that origin, though I actually kind of like jynx too, albeit mostly in a so-bad-it's-good sort of way. And while I mostly can agree regarding gen 9, I don't think shroodle can be called poorly designed, considering it's a pretty clever idea to make the unevolved form of the graffiti-artist pokémon look just like Kilroy (a classic graffiti drawing), plus, being a poison type, it can pull off not being all that cute, and its clipping teeth is less a problem with its design than it is with the cheap, rushed graphics of the game it's in. Pretty good video, I definitely enjoy all the thought put into it.
Will not stand for bramblin slander. Something really charming about interacting with the 3D model in SV - especially with how its seed eyes stay fixed when rolling or spin around during attacks. Super simple but lots of character - very easily takes on friend vibes while also being ominous and creepy. Brambleghast is also amazing but prefer bramblin
7:00 theory is that graveller arm went to Machamp and the lizard head from machoke went to golem throught trade evolution. Is a neat but they gave up half way
I enjoy crabominable, yeti crabs are pretty cool. its bowl cut is kinda weird tho. Also, Im surprised that toucannon isnt a fire type. Its a litteral cannon. That FIRES.
I really disagree with the placement of Eternatus. First of all: Enamorous is _a lot_ worse than that. Secondly, it's the only Pokemon that's said to come from space that actually looks the part. Aside from Beheeyem, who is just a stereotype of an alien, Eternatus' skeletal, almost artificial design make for a more conving alien invader monster than any other Pokemon, even Orbeetle. Plus, I really like the theory that Eternamax is supposed to be what's left of one the Giants mentioned in the Plates: a primordial force of chaos originally defeat by Arceus at the beginning of time to create the universe.
Sunflora gets so much hate and I love it. I get its not the most creative, but how can you see a happy sunflower and not have feelings other than peace and joy?
I still vehemently disagree about Crabominable for 2 reasons. First, gorillas do not have hair between their pecs and their gut area. Since Crabominable does, it looks like a bra. Second the blonde hair sticks out like a sore thumb from the rest of the design. Feels like a weird hybrid between Owen from Total Drama and Tweedle Dee (or Tweedle Dum).
1) It's not a literal Gorilla, so there is no reason for it to follow Gorilla anatomy. Any literal breastplate is gonna look like a bra. Can't say that's an objective flaw. 2) Both of the character examples you gave are known for being "unintelligent" so I'd say that feature very much conveyed what Game Freak wanted it to. Hope you enjoyed nonetheless :)
@nasimamheddr6844 @JunsBizarreAdventure he probably releases the video early to members (this guy is a member because he has the little icon by his name)
Look, here's something. If you trade Machoke and Graveler, the evolutions make more sense. Machamp gains Graveler's four arms, and Golem gains Machoke's kind of lizard-like face. Also Ledyba is one of my favorite Pokémon, you offended me so hard.
Modern Pokemon designs suffer from over-engineering. Sure, the first pokemon were often simple, but some people, including myself, are fans of those cleanly drawn concepts. I'd rather have something simple and good-looking than have a Pokemon with so many references in it's design that it looks worse for having said references.
While I may have certain points where I disagree with you, for the most part I wouldn't really say that you're outright wrong. With one exception. Bramblin. I started playing Scarlet without having known about Bramblin's existence. I already had both a grass pokemon and a ghost pokemon in my party when I first saw Bramblin. But the moment I saw Bramblin I LOVED it! Maybe it's because I'm from Arizona so I'm biased, but I love it. And I think it's cool that as it rolls around it's eyes stay facing the same direction the whole time regardless of the position of it's body (probably keeps it from getting dizzy). Plus, the idea that it's a soul that got tangled up in dead leaves is pretty cool, and a neat reason for the design. (Also I just didn't see enough tumbleweed in the design that you showed briefly to appreciate that as a replacement, but maybe watching whatever video/seeing whatever description you gave for that design would help bring me around on it.) So, while not the most intricate, or the coolest, or the prettiest, Bramblin and Brambleghast are in the running for my favorite pokemon line in this gen. (If anything I prefer Bramblin to Brambleghast. Brambleghast looks a little too much like it has a face. Like, it's not bad, and overall I like it being a fuller tumbleweed, but I feel like it could have benefited by looking just a bit messier/less organized. But that's probably just me.) Still, great video, love your stuff.
I will defend Cryogonal until the day I die. I love the way it looks. There's not really any other pokemon like it, same for the Klink line. I also love Barbaracle cause I end up loving hand monsters. It's peak Nintendo hand boss and I love hand boss designs.
I HEAVILY disagree with Pawmot being the "worst" in Paldea. I don't think every pokemon NEEDS to go through drastic changes in its design in order to "be good". I love the simple and small changes Pawmot gets. The bigger tuft of hair, elongated arms, and slightly darker fur tone helps distinguish it enough from Pawmo to tell that it's an evolved form. The Bigger arms I feel help accentuate the fact that it's a fighting type. And keeping the face cute helps keep it established that this is, in fact, this generation's "Pikachu Clone". And the first Pikachu clone SINCE PIKACHU that can evolve!! So no, I definitely do not thing Pawmot is badly designed, and ESPECIALLY not the "Worst" design in Paldea.
None of the simple minimalistic designs should be here, it's the complicated designs that are unconfortable to look at (so basically most of post Gen 3 Pokémon) EDIT: No way is Magmortar better than Ambipom and Emboar better than Klinklang. No way

I personally find Shroodle to be an unnecessary pre-evolution. Grafaiai as a standalone pokémon would have been perfectly fine.
Until this video I actualy forgot Shroodle existed and thought Grafaiai was a single stage pokémon.............
my only problem with shroodle is that it doesn't make sense as a grafaiai pre evo. it doesn't make sense that a shrew evolves into a primate.
I think shroodle was supposed to be based off an old graffiti piece. It was a man with a long round nose that said 'Harold was here' or something like that, I can't remember the name. Apparently it was popular to draw the man on different surfaces with the same sentence near it
@@adventuringjay8401 omg that makes so much sense, i never would’ve made that connection!
@@adventuringjay8401
Killroy.
And wow, yeah, that kinda makes sense. Never thought of that connection. But the big nose and pupils, plus the fact shrewdle is pretty much just a head, it really makes sense as a refrence.
Palpitoad’s “half-evolved-ness” might actually be intentional, cause it reminds me of those tadpoles which have sprouted legs but not arms and just look kind of awkward
or maybe because it is a middle evolution

24:16 I think Enamorus' lipstick marking is also based on the mouth tattoos of Ainu women (a practice which was done to repel demons of disease), which is why it points out at the sides.
It would be nice if the modelers kept the lip marking as a flat texture instead of puffing them out, but they probably did that to make it a bit closer to the other Forces of Nature's "facial hair"
Regarding Eternatus, here is its Shield Pokedex description: "It was inside a meteorite that fell 20,000 years ago. There seems to be a connection between this Pokémon and the Dynamax phenomenon."
So yeah, it's not a ton of backstory but I think alien biology gives us a pass on the non-standard design, especially considering it's entirely responsible for gen 8's gimmick. This thing needed to look both otherworldly and powerful and *boy* did they achieve that with Eternatus in my opinion.
"Crabby is just a Crab!"
Yeah, reminds me that Crabby's Japanese name is in fact"Crab".
Burn mr mime now
I think Pawmot is fine design, it' just looks more like mid-evo. Pawmo is what's wrong with that line. If Pawmi evolved straight into Pawmot or it got evo afterwards, then it would be better

I mean I can see the fur suit comparison more with sneasler more tbf
Noticed that too
The reason golem looks so different is because it was intended to be traded for machamp that’s why his final evolution looks so different if you put both evolutionary lines side by side you can see they switched parts machamp got 2 of gravelers arms and golem got machokes lizard face
Isn’t it because they were designed before they even added evolution to the game?
That’s just a theory that’s not why
@@MicoDossunbut a cool one :)
Is there an in game trade between a Machoke and Graveller? If so then this has some merit but if not it just seems random and confusing when you factor in Golem can be made by trading with literally everything unlike Shelmet and Karrablast
Does this also explain why Butterfree looks more like Venonat than Venomoth does? Hmmm
I’m amazed that that didn’t come up, considering he mentioned most of the Gen 4 evolutions that are fairly unpopular.
I think that the design is going for a more “Hansel an Gretel” sort of look and Macaroni fashion as well as the paintings of fat men in fancy 18th century clothes. It makes sense considering that Lickitung is all about licking and eating eventually becoming rotund.
Huge Lickilicky Stan over here, the only problem is that they didn't make the tongue long.
Where did you see elephant/rhino features in lickitung?
@@persian338 I don't know. It's based on a weird lizard thing.
imma be real Eternatus is sick
yes, it doesn't look like a pokemon, but just think for a sec.
Oooh that’s true :0
yes and no, i dont think its a fair comparison since a lot of gen 1 and 2 mons were made as sprites first and with the restrictions of gb pallet and pixel density.
I'm with you, great design even the shiny has great colors... I wish it had a better move pool back in Kalos but it's better now
Its lore is great too, an old magician wearing a robe. people are just mad it became older and thus they cant yiff it anymore lol
I love Delphox sm though I am biased because it's my first ever starter
I think some people forget that they're MONSTERS. Not animals. Monsters can be anything.
Animals can get pretty wild in the designs too

I love Herdier so much. You said it doesn't have expression, but look at its stern and protective face. You said it's just a Yorkshire terrier, but look at that cool cape made from its own fur. Plus, it's just appealing all around!
Funnily enough, Herdier's designer also made Victini and prob a few other mons but the doggo is still her favorite :)
Herdier does have a very fitting expression for a terrier! It says "I'm 10 pounds of sass in 5 pound bag!"
FR Herdier being on that list is CRIMINAL
Yeah, I was wondering how he couldn't see or at least didn't mention the cape.
I mostly just like Herdier because it balances a cute and tough look, honestly. XD
I love Herdier, I think he is adorable. He's just a doggo with a mustache and a fluffy cape. Lillipup's line was my favorite for a long time, I had a Stoutland on my first ever team :')
Flamigo is not just a cartoon flamingo. Its body is literally a boxing glove.
I like Flamigo and I'll defend its design but I just cannot see the boxing glove no matter how many times I hear that.
It just doesn’t look good there was so much potential and Aromatisse was a major letdown
Slurpuff is kind of hard to identify as a dog, tbh, but then again, so is Smeragle. Didn't know Slurpuff was a dog until a few years ago.
I was also puzzled at slurpuff's inclusion, it never seemed like a bad design to me. Just a cute li'l sweet friend.
Goat answer can't agree more eternatus is so sick
Yep, the skeletal appearance makes sense when you remember what Wishing Stars actually are. Creepy, but effective
Ye Eternatus is badass
I just think that eternatus came one generation too late. It looks like an evolution of Naganadel, and that’s why I think it should be on the list.
@@SourSalmon How does it look like Naganadel? The only thing they have in common is their typing.
Gonna go to bat for the Paldea-mons here:
- Bramblin I don't think is any more basic than like a Morelull or Bounsweet.
Spidops is a great design
I like this theory about pawmot. I never got the hate over its simple design. Plus it's a pika clone, which don't usually evolve so they finally made one worth using, while keeping that concept in the design
With Pacman frog, did you mean Pepe?

I feel like I’m the only one who really loves Pawmot. I think it’s fine to have simple evolutions (look back at Gen 1 stuff like the Cleffa line) even this late in the series. It can be both cute and tough, as seen in its official art. It looks very friendly, but can beat you up. Its hands being like those electrical pads doctors use is very clever given it learns Revival Blessing

As you scroll through the comments you will come to the realization that he created an angry raging mob just by criticizing this one Pokemon. There might be need for an apology video. 😂
I feel like nobody would have an issue with Pawmot if Pawmo didn't exist
I love pawmot. I really like that we finally have a strong pikaclone.
Pawmot really carried my team especially in AI Turo battle in my Violet playthrough

It serves as just one of the pokemon you meet that's just... an animal but more but where usually Pokemon picks Just an Animal but Cartoony
Pidgy is Just an Animal, but it fights
it looks like just a bird but it looks scrappy and like this is a creature where its ok to right it cause... that's a Fight Club Bird
It's like that angry little kitten that really wants to eat you but can't. It's adorable but claims to be vicious.
I still want to see you draw furniture as Pokemon:
Lava Lamp as an Electric/Fire type
Grandfather clock or Cuckoo Cuckoo Clock
Baby crib that evolves into a regular bed and then evolves into a King Size Bed
Someone honestly explain to me please why Delphox gets this much hate. One of my favorite starters and I absolutely love the design. What exactly did people expect here that they are so disappointed in this Pokemon?
It's too humanoid. Most people want their starters to be more creature-like
@@Jarino507But what about Incineroar or Ciderace? I feel like they are well liked. I don't like them but for other reasons. So is it really the humanoid thing? I don't think it is the feminine thing because the second evolution is well liked and how is it so much different to the fully evolved one? I know the sprite animation was crap but people really don't like the whole design it seems like.
@@joanna2787 Those are also very much disliked for the same reason. I personally dislike all 3.
@@Jarino507well fair enough then. 😅
Damn, why's that?
That “$5 haircut” was personal.😂😂 Good one Ron!
Am I the only one who loved Bruxish from the start?
I myself have some bruxism and loved it, the colors add to the tropical feeling of it and the expression is full of personality.
Yeah and the whole big jaw thing fits perfectly with its moves, and ability.
I've always loved how it combines flamboyant colours with maliciousness. It makes it seem more crazy and wild.
It's a humuhumunukunukuapuaua how could you not like it
It IS a piranha after all. Piranhas aren't supposed to be pretty but I like bruxish simply because it's ugly but in a charming way and I love it
i loooved bruxish when we first got photos of it. it just feels so rare to have a pokemon with so many colors. they tend to stick to limited color palettes for most oft he designs so i love how colorful it is
The Krabby thing highlighted an issue I have with art discourse
The mindset that rounded design are inherently bad and angular designs are inherently good
It definitely seems to be a nostalgia issue, as a lot of people miss the rougher, more monstrous feel of the gen 1 pokémon and find the more recent softer designs seem like sellouts because they seem more built to be made into toys.
@@jaschabull2365 a mindset people have had since Gen 4. But now that’s part of the “non-sell our days.”
I guess that applies to other place I’ve seen it.
Crabominable's only crime was wasting the slick stylish crab boxer motif Crabrawler had.
But it definitely isn’t overlooked by the TCG community-Lumineon V’s ability Luminous Sign is so useful that it’s in basically every deck!
THAT WOULDVE BEEN PERFECT OMGGG
I want to see you draw Sawk and Throh now with the crystallized pattern. That would be awesome!
I never had an issue with Jynxs "dress" as it to me is believably part of it, just the boob part takes me out of it. And why not make it more white or light blue?
white and focus more on the ice aspect.
I just now realized Cryogonal has two blue eyes and not one black one in the middle. I always thought it was intimidating now I’m like @_@
The squaqwabily redesign is so clever I love that poketuber
Love the Way you talk about Gen 7! So cool when people dont hate
Gen 7 is probably the most consistently well designed Gen post Gens 1 - 4 imo
There's not much to hate about Gen 7.

In retrospect I can not believe they took a poke ball, turned it upside down and drew a different face on it and called it an evolution
Another thing I'd add about Enamorus is the lips being the same color as the hair made me think for awhile that it had a moustache and not lips, i feel like they should have maybe used the darker pink color of the design for the lips instead.
I just realised how human like Mr mime actually is and now it is freaking me out
i have a new respect for aromatisse after getting a shiny one, and while sunflora is just a sunflower the face reminds me of clay garden stakes! great video as always man
I love Krabby because of its cute proportions, and design and I believe that krabby is more so meant to represent the smaller and simpler creatures in the Pokémon world, while still giving them personality. but I think that may be mainly because of ash’s krabby in the anime.
You should really make a 'How to draw Fakemons' please, I admire your work sm

Bro Pawmot is the goat gen 9 pokemon he is so fuzzy and cute while also being strong and powerful as well as having a defibrillator theme with its hands. It is super underrated.
The entire line is perfect as is, I don't know what Pawmo haters and Pawmot haters are having temper tantrums for.
I think people forget that for good Pokemon to exist, there also needs to be lesser Pokemon, otherwise they’re all just average.
I replayed lets go eevee using a jynx and now i really love it, but my shiny smoochum is my baby
remember that a unreleased Pokémon could be the worst Pokémon if anything they could make something ugly called corbastrick
I agree that pawmi line doesn't change much but pawmot is one of my favourite gen 9 mons fr and favourite pika clone, great shiny too
I honestly agree with almost everything you've said and your explanations (although I'm not as forgiving of the dishonorable mentions tbh lol) Great vid!
This is gonna be really controversial but Aromatisse is a Pokémon i like i think it looks cute and honestly ive started to like it more and more over the years
I am totaly in love with dunsparce which many people also do not get 😅
Yeah I'm also an Aromatisse defender, it's cute and good for a pokemon based primarily on fragrances and cosmetics.
Even something small like a color change could have helped, but it just looks like a real life crab to me
"it looks like a gremlin Neopet"
Me, checking my Neopets with this video playing in the background:
I will be the Pawmot defender. Pawmi is super adorable and Pawmot is a perfect evolution to it, I think that if Pawmo was removed people would have way less of a problem with it. To me Pawmot is not only really cute and well proportioned, but it's definitely leagues better than a lot of the mid we got in gen 9. I will die on that hill.
I agree! Pawmot was my favorite Pokémon from Scarlet and Violet.
imo Pawmo >>>>> Pawmot in every conceivable facet. if pawmot was removed and pawmo was like slightly bigger i think it’d be fantastic
I like Pawmot; plus it is the best Pikachu Clone competitively with a good support and physical movepool.
Honestly if Pawmo had never existed, this line would have been perfect.
No, keep Pawmo, its way to adorable!!
“I’ve never seen a Pokémon with a receding hairline”
That got my dieing 😂😂
Speaking of design, could you make a video on how to draw in the Sugimori style?
7:00 theory is that graveller arm went to Machamp and the lizard head from machoke went to golem throught trade evolution. Is a neat but they gave up half way
I enjoy crabominable, yeti crabs are pretty cool. its bowl cut is kinda weird tho. Also, Im surprised that toucannon isnt a fire type. Its a litteral cannon. That FIRES.
23:49 that "sexy" came out of nowhere lmaooo
10:10 ouch, don't tell Michael from MandJTV this
I really disagree with the placement of Eternatus.
Yeah, and we can use the ultimate excuse here as well: It is meant to be just a happy little sunflower. Love this guy. 🌻
You say that when in SV we had the legion of Sunflora running like they were going to war. Sounds more terrifying than anything.

But that's probably just me.)
Still, great video, love your stuff.
Just cause it’s “supposed” to look ugly doesn’t mean we gonna like its design. If you wanna get ugly Pokémon good on you, but I ain’t
Can we all agree that if Gamefreak could un-make one Pokémon it would be Jynx?
None of the simple minimalistic designs should be here, it's the complicated designs that are unconfortable to look at (so basically most of post Gen 3 Pokémon)
EDIT: No way is Magmortar better than Ambipom and Emboar better than Klinklang. No way
