I am fully aware that the video is categorized by region and not generation. This video is part of a series of videos with “In Every Generation” in the title. The word "Generation" is simply more attractive than the word "Region." People would confuse titles like “The BEST Parts of Every Region” as videos talking about the literal locations in regions, so I decided to use the word “Generation” in the titles of all the videos in this series.
since your'e also an artist i was excited for the title but a bit disappointed when i started watching. it kinda beats the purpose if you pick a design from gen 7.5(Let's Go) for gen 1 design. if you actually do it generation wise i think it'll be more interesting cause we can see how the design evolves.

Im not sure if anyone noticed this but it always seemed like every generation the Clothes that the people of the pokemon world wore kinda matched the aesthetic of the time period the games were released in. Like Flannery to me looks like a early 2000's "Rebellious" teen. While Nessa looks like a modern Instagram model doing a swim suit ad.
Another example is like valerie from x and y reminds me a lot of when J fashion was huge vs marnie from swsh when alt fashion is a lot more popular nowadays

Man, since i first saw him in the trailer, I fell for him just like Raihan. Anytime he beefing with Irida, always took his side. He picked him to travel with me at the end
I love how the human designs have gotten better over the years. Not only in terms of diversity (which is good) but they are also more distinctive and memorable. If there's something I love about Galar, it's the character designs (Sordward and Shieldbert were... a choice, but the rest of the designs were awesome).
I respect your opinion but in term of character design, I personally think the serie has gotten wors over time. I just really love the gen 1 and 2 league members, I think they are all just so iconic, Misty, Erika, Surge, Blue, Jeanine, lance, Mortimer and jasmine are just amazing and Albert, will, karen and sabrina are some of my favourite designs ever. But in general I like the art style of the character design, and they provide a wide range of personality and appearance. Theyare realistic enough to not appear goofy, but yet have clear design elements that make them unic and recognizable. And by the way, I know these designs are the result of years of anime appearances, multiple video game redesigns and I'm certainly not praising the RBY sprites and I'm sure modern designs could surpass them with the same level of redesign, but as they are, HGSS sprites just look like perfect to me. In another hand, I'm sorry but I just don't really like modern trainer designs, even my two favourite pokemon games (X and Black) just doesn't make them anymore appealing. I just find the designs either one dimentional or caricatural, making them less appealing as actual characters. I will be fair, there are exeptions, for exemple I think Elesa's design is fantastic but in general I find the average design way wors, and I'm still trying to find a design that impresses me in Alola.
As for Sword and Shield characters ... I'm sorry I just really dislike most of them. To be fair, I like Kabu and Marni's designs, Hope and Sonya despite being annoying in the game have fairly decent designs as well. But the rest of them are either umemorable and random or strait up awful. The fairy and dark gym leaders look like crush candy papers to me. These designs just lack death, subtility and humanity, they just feel like jokes because of how overly caricatural they are, but at last still doesn't give me any impression. Anyways, I'm happy someone like them, it proves that there are things for everyone, I hope you didn't take this comment too seriously.

The earlier designs are only more iconic because: A) They had more time to flourish B)Pokemon as a franchise was at its peak around that time The newer designs incorporate various unique elements, broaden the cast of characters in multiple regards(diversity, syncronity with Pokemon and types, etc.), and have much deeper personalities than previous gym leaders. For example, the Galar water type gym leader, Nessa, is much more fleshed out than Erika due to how she incorporates more water elements compared to the amount of grass elements Erika includes, but also has a much deeper character and conflict as she is struggling to balance both modeling and gym battling.
@@thatsprettyfarfetchd9888 Again my problem is that they are too caricatural to feel like real characters. Like the Kanto gym leaders were characters that happened to be specialised in a certain type. The newer gym leaders feel in my opinion too much like embodiments of their types. You took nessa as an exemple but most of the newer character designs are way more extreme. And even nessa looks sort of dead inside, like she has a personality but her design really do not convey it at all. And even then, the writing in these game is so awful that a good idea can very easily turn into a 10 years old's homework. Also their designs completely differ from the original art style of pokemon to become very cartoonish. It's not necessarly a bad thing but the problem is that they are in a game where older designs are still their so it's really incoherent, unlike in franchise like Zelda where the whole game change its artstyle to match the new aesthetic. I think one of the problem is the way they were created. The gen 1 designs weren't definitive at all when the game launched and had the room to grow deepen and change over the course of the franchise. They could easily reinterpret a character to make it more appealing. In newer generation, when a character is revealed, it is already in its definitive state and can no longer change, so if a character is launched in an underwhelming state because the devs weren't inspired when the game launched, it will remain underwhelming. They aren't versatile enough compared to older designs.
Some favourites of mine who didn't even make fir honourable mentions Falkner: his design fits Johto's traditional Japanese aesthetic very well, and he's canonicaly handsome (particularly popular amongst young girls) Roxanne: her ORAS redesign from school girl to teacher is incredibly appealing, one of the biggest glow ups in rhe series Bertha: you can tell exactly what her personality is just by looking at her B2W2 Bianca and Cherem: their designs are mature while still being unmistakeably them, and the way Bianca gaining glasses implies her clumsiness was partially due to bad eyesight is super cool
I agree with Bianca in BW2. She became more adult-like while still has the clumsy cute charm. For her wearing glasses, maybe because she became Prof. Juniper assistant. So she kinda overworked her eyes. But something intrigued me. Cheren lose his red rimmed glasses in BW2, while Bianca wears a red rimmed glasses in BW2. Coincidence? Did Cheren recommend her his favorite glasses brand? Or... Did he give her his glasses as a present?

I agree there! They present some interesting dualities with being more morally gray. Sidney and Karen are not above using shady tactics in battle, but they accept loss gracefully and offer great insight about what being a Trainer is all about. And Piers is the definition of punk rock, but also an undoubtedly chill and nice guy.
Imo the Hisui protagonists (Rei (Lucas) & Akari (Dawn)) deserved to be on the list as well. They have the most unique looking protagonist designs in the series (obviously due to the setting of Hisui). It's detailed and simple at the same time. Especially the scarfs and hats of their original counterparts were implemented really well. I love those designs :)

i really appreciate you bringing up the fan theory that N is neurodivergent! it's a near and dear concept to me as an autistic person, the way he's written just SCREAMS neurodivergent to me and it's really nice hearing a popular poketuber bring it up so nonchalantly :]
I didn't really like N at first, but as I saw how he developed in the story, I definitely can see that in him. That plus the fact that N probably got very little social interaction with people in his early life other than those affiliated with Ghetsis and Team Plasma. As someone with autism as well, I can appreciate this representation and believe this theory to be true. It brought him to tie with three others for my favourite rival.
@@kamikazesenpai21 Ash is not neurodivergent. He is optimistic and cares for Pokemon to an extreme extent, but at the same time is extremely sociable and seems to understand people well. I don't see any traits that could classify him as such.
Yeah, as a girl with high functioning autism I agree that N is pretty much definitely on the spectrum. Hell, even if I _WEREN'T_ on the spectrum I'd have to agree... However....whole looking up some stuff related to the subject... I somehow stumbled upon a 4chan board where everyone just seems to be hardcore dunking on autistic people--especially autistic girls... And like....Jesus Christ that's the most scumbag thing I've ever seen on the internet....even if it's all trolling (which, if it is it went _WAY_ too far) some of the things they said were just outright sexist, ableist, and downright demeaning.... The second I read the sentence "I doubt people would want to date an autistic girl It’s like being an unpaid tard wrangler" I knew I was in for a wild ride... And honestly it was just filled with drama and while I don't recommend anyone go looking for it it was honestly kind of intriguing to see how chaotic things got...
Leon's Cape also symbolises the pressure he has put on him. It is said I game that his own cape is very heavy which symbolises how much stuff he has to do as a champion and how that is possible hurting him
I really love how the elite 4 of Kalos has and amazing designs; even if they're not so good in the history. But man, Siebold has such and amazing design for a water elite 4 and Dracena too, cuz there designs fits soo well with the theme of there pokemons and proffesions! Unfortunate gamefreak didn't give them the relevance they deserve.
Siebold´s design to me looks like a potential Kalos champion design. And Drasna kinda looks like a design that could be a champion as well but for the unova region.
I also love how (based on recent previews) the anime gave Drasna black eyes without any highlights. It just adds to her designs since it gives her a cold, soulless stare to her opponents whenever she gets serious, just like a dragon preparing to attack its adversary.
I really like how it was pointed out in N’s design that the extra accessories he wears add credence to the idea of him being neurodivergent - I personally always read him as neurodivergent/autistic (partially also cause I’m autistic & ND and ever since I was a kid I really had an affinity for him), and I’m so glad you mentioned it! :D
@Lee it’s not ‘coddling’ to see myself in another character for traits that I have always felt alienated from the rest of the world for my entire life, as well as facing prejudice. Good for you for never having to experience that alienation and prejudice, but that doesn’t mean you get to be rude for a completely valid read of the character. And even if the traits he has as from him being a Pokemon as opposed to being a neurodivergent human, his outward behaviour still mirrors mine and is relatable to me, and could still be seen as an apt metaphor for my own experiences. And as far as I know, N being a Pokemon still hasn’t been confirmed as canon, so he can still just be as easily read as an autistic or neurodivergent human, especially with traits like favouring being around animals, not seeming to care much for casualties in conversations, and ‘strange’ speaking patterns. TLDR, you don’t get to say I’m somehow fucking ‘coddled’ for recognising similar traits in a fictional character to myself, shut up.
same same! And his stim toys not only go along with his interest in formulas and math but help contribute to his complex personality. Like it’s so important to me that the elements of his personality outside of his love of pokemon are represented because it makes him such a well rounded character
The protagonist may seem soulless (you know, lack of dialogue and all) but during cutscenes they really show emotion through body language and all have their own interesting and unique styles.

My all time favorite design for a human character is Volo, especially his Arceus clothes, he looks so cool in his other design than his normal design and gives off a super hard final boss character feel; I also really like how he looks like Cynthia.

My man literally chose the best character design in Alola. No, but seriously. Guzma is literally my all-time favorite Team Leader because of his and the rest of Team Skulls' theme is amazing because I love skulls. Plus, his character is really amazing overall. And also, a lot of people could really feel connected with Guzma because of what happened to him as a kid.
if you’ve already seen my weird essay then don’t look at it here; here’s an explanation of my opinions on Alolan character designs for you (lol); Gen 7 is my favorite generation in almost all aspects. Sometimes it falls short in character design that convey personality, or use basic designs. Some examples would be Mallow, Lana, and Sophocles, which kind of seem like they’re just… happy all of the time, even when they change expressions. Sure, they work, but a bit bland. Most are mediocre or just good, like base design Kukui and Lillie. Then there are better ones, for example Lusamine Transformed, Kiawe, and Plumeria. These convey their character well and aren’t expressionless or just happy. And then you have my three favorite designs in Sun and Moon, which far surpass nearly all of Generation 8. The Masked Royal, Olivia, and Guzma. Not many like the Masked Royal design, but I feel like it conveys the character of Kukui as the Royal perfectly. Then Olivia; she is really pretty, with a ton of beautiful details and a bunch of jewelry that really suits her look and aesthetic. And perhaps my favorite character design in the entire Pokémon franchise- Guzma. His facial expressions are amazingly expressive, his black, white and gold color scheme is truly beautiful and simplistic, possibly referencing his past trauma. All of the skull details like the tattoos, gold necklace, and back of the jacket skull that all get crossed out or removed after the game ends. The goggles and hair are my favorite part of his design because they feel so different and yet so in keeping with his character. And also, he’s hot. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. I always thought something was off about Lenora's design. Doesn't help that the other obviously black characters in those games are basketball/football players, dancers, and the Fighting-type Elite 4. Marshall having that spot isn't the worst, but to me it's not a good look that he's the "brawns" when all the other Elite 4 are "brains" in some way.

I was looking forward to this video! The human characters are really what I like about this franchise, maybe even more than the Pokémon themselves, and seeing so many of their amazing designs getting their spotlight here really makes me happy. I am one of those who thinks Valerie is beautiful, especially as depicted in the anime, where her eyes, even without pupils were surprisingly expressive, and her overall design matches perfectly with the whimsy of the Fairy type. Also, I like Kahili and wish she got more love as a character.

Also I watched Mandjtv’s video about how she could be champion if she had a Mega Mawile and that made me love her 1000 x more( I think the video is called people who could beat the champions in their respective regions)
@@anjealousanaconda9692 Mega Mawile is really powerful, so that does make perfect sense. That unique beauty has led to me having a bit of a crush on her. I even once started to write a fan fiction with her as the love interest for the main character, though I never finished writing it (but I still wasn't to).
Valerie has probably one of my favourite designs in all of pokemon and shes definitely design wise an amazing introduction of what fairy type gym leaders could be!

I’m somewhat surprised that you didn’t bring up the fact that Guzma’s shades look like a sun and a waning moon. His shades also mirror his eyes in his iconic facial expression. Just perfect. And people wonder why Generation 7 is my favorite and has collectively some of my favorite designs than any other Generation. Beaten only in number by Generation 8, but all of it’s designs are in another plane of existence.
Personally i really like Grimsley's outfit, his unique Tuxedo match perfectly with his risktsker nature. The details on his pants reminds the colours of a roulette. This peculiar outfit suggests us that he's or he was a nobleman. In the end his hairstyle, that remind were inspired by Dracula, gives him that mischievous and sinister touch to the character.
I love Arezu’s body type! I have a pear shape body type, and its rare to see girls on screen without super thin, pretty feminine legs. Arezu’s thicker hips and thighs make me feel less insecure about mine… I don’t really wish that they were dainty anymore, now that there’s a pear shaped girl on screen whos still portrayed as pretty and feminine :)
I feel like ORAS Wallace is almost a spiritual successor to Kuja from Final Fantasy 9. They don't *look* much alike, but the overall *feel* is very similar
Out of the entire gen 8 designs, Opal is my personal favorite. Her half-retro-half-modern style makes her a perfect depiction of what Galar stands for and not just a stereotypical British old lady that annoys everyone
Not having Ethan on the Johto list is honestly nothing but a crime. To me he embodies the PERFECT young guy going on an adventure look. He looks sporty, he looks fun and it looks practical and outgoing. As a kid, I would 100% wear his fit. That cap is everything.
No surprise that Cynthia was so high up Her design is amazing and she is by far one of my favourite characters in Pokémon I’m definitely biased but I would’ve put N a little higher, still a good place for him though

I’m still amazed that Mother Beast Lusamine is a thing that happened. Now that I think about it it’s kinda odd she isn’t talking about much considering the theory for Sun and Moons gimmick was Human x Pokémon fusion before it was revealed to be Z-Moves

(Yesss lets go Team Aqua! Archie #1!) Leaf's design made such an impression on my kid self that she was one of my 1st halloween costumes I chose to wear. And definitely agree with your about wanting to wear what pryce does when I'm old. Ty for putting Juan on the list, too! It's interesting to see how trainer designs have evolved over the years as I watch your rankings. Neat that even the merch and games (aka pokemas) have started to give these awesome designs more love, too!
I feel like HGSS Misty is an underrated design. Talked about her Let's Go design, but I don't know, I just like the idea of her wearing a swimsuit because her gym is literally a pool, but she still wears a jacket over it so it looks like it can just be an outfit she wears everywhere if she wanted unlike her gen 1 game design where she is wearing just a swimsuit. It also has hits of blue to add to her water typing theme if that wasn't obvious from the literally swimsuit. HGSS Misty also kinda reminds me a little of RS Wallace but like was mentioned in the video that look might not fit Wallace as much as his other designs. I'm personally a fan of the cape he has in Emerald and B2W2, gives him little extra flair while keeping that cool jacket... and not to show my love of the water type trainers too much, but Wake doesn't even get a mention in Shinoh? I love Wake's design shows a side to the side to water type gym leaders we really don't get to see. I mean we have other swimmer trainer designs like Misty, and elegant water type trainers like Wallace, granted Wallace and Misty are probably the best versions of those two designs, but when it comes to Wake I just don't think there is another trainer like him. You might be able to argue that Wake's design is more fitting for a fighting type trainer like Chuck, but to me it kinda takes the showman aspect Wallace and Juan had and just goes a different direction with it. Water can be tough, and beautiful, it can be a form of art and a type of show and I think Wake just covers the side of things characters like Wallace and Jaun just don't.
Honestly I can’t believe you didn’t mention Maxie in the Hoenn section, I always loved his slicked back hair and serious demeanor, as well as the glasses he got later. Although of course Archie is better :P
The best thing about Gladion and Guzma's designs to me is that they're both clearly *trying too hard.* Gladion's goal is to get stronger at all costs and so he tries to dress the part of a tough guy, but all the crazy spikes and the hair and the piercings are so tacky and it's the perfect representation of what a young boy thinks being tough looks like. And Guzma is similar, he dresses like a street thug but not like...the real kind. He's more like a rapper version of a thug that wears a lot of bling and goes on and on about how big and bad they are, when in reality it's all talk--and that's kinda what Guzma is. It's a simple yet genius design. Also I am very happy to see Marnie and Steven on here because their fashion is seriously on point. Leather jacket + cute dress is one of my favorite styles ever so I fell in love with Marnie's design the second I saw her. And Steven is just a good-looking dude all around.
I would like to give some special mentions to a few characters I love you didn't mention: - Will, who I think does embody the Psychic type pretty well, and his mask/spectacles add to the mysteriousness that comes with the type. I'm going to go further there and say that Will is probably, to me, the most attractive character, but I can't pinpoint why exactly. - Phoebe, her design is such a massive contrast to the type she uses which I always liked, and it fits her personality so well. - Bertha, who looks and acts like the grandmother I wish I had. Her outfit is plain, but not at all old-fashioned. She keeps up for sure. - Wikstrom is a character with a lot of (sadly) wasted potential. He is a knight, which fits the theme of Kalos and the Pokemon League fairly well and the fact that his armor fits so well with Aegislash's awesome design really bumps him up a lot for me I think my absolute favourite character designis Archie. Like, they hit the bullseye with his ORAS design.
I actually laughed at the fact that Archie had a redesign that reveals his muscular traits and it reminds me of that Simpsons scene where Homer and his family went skiing and he saw Ned Flanders outfit which made him forget the instruction because of "stupid sexy Flanders".
Reasons watching this video made me describe - The usage of 'drip' and 'chad' - The honesty of how attractive you found certain characters - The classiness and respect with which you described female characters - The in depth commentary on design choices such as color palettes - The fact that even though I've never played a single mainline Pokemon game you managed to get me to sit through an entire video about character designs
I'm glad that Drayden made it to #1 in Unova, he is one of the hottest male characters in Pokemon. Personally, I feel that Volo should also get an honourary mention in Hisui, I like his final design in the last battle. Its a bit goofy yes, but love the manic personality at the end with an outfit inspired by Arceus and battle theme directly referencing Cynthia's.
Fun fan theories: Some say that Kabu is Flannery's grandfather. And some say Plumeria might actually be Lovrina from Pokemon XD. Or she is somehow related to her.
Here are things I learned about in this video: - Ghetsis has Bell's Palsy - N is Neurodivergent(I know it's a theory but I didn't know about it) - Burnet was in Dream Radar(I never used Dream Radar) there's probably something I forgot that I learned about, but this video was very educational.
IM SO GLAD YOU BROUGHT UP THE SUBMAS BROTHERS I have a personal love for them (autism + really likeing trains does that to a person lol) and I barley got to see them mentioned before ledgends arceus! Even tho their original artwork makes them look like muppets lol.
I'm really not sure how the Team Magma leader and admins redesigns didn't make it, they're just as good as Aqua's, even though they go for completely different styles and energy.
My thoughts too. I think people tend to gravitate towards Archie and his team because they have a "cool" factor to them. I love them too, but I don't think the designs of Maxie and Team Magma should be seen as lesser simply because they have different vibes to them. Maxie and his team are meant to be the polar opposites to Archie and his crew. And while there's nothing wrong with preferring cool, rowdy pirate types to the more organized and nerdy members of Magma, it doesn't mean the Magma designs are inferior. They serve their purpose very well. I especially love Maxie. You look at him and just instantly know what kind of person he is. He's just as wonderful as Archie to me.
Hilda had 1 of the hardest designs to connect with for me, I'm not a tomboy. Of course I was also disappointed by Lyra replacing Kris. Gen 5 needed trainer customization way more than it needed the hidden music feature or the severely underused new battle styles that were barely in the game. As a girly girl I like the Paldea Uniforms so much better.
Trainer Leaf was my first cosplay I made something from scratch (the skirt) and still one of my favourites to cosplay. I like the remade Aqua and Magma as well and Cynthia is always iconic
I know it may be basic but Milo's design from Sword and Shield is one of my favorites. He's obviously a farm boy cause since he has a Wooloo farm shown in Twilight Wings and he may look big but he's actually really sweet and his cute green eyes with his freckles was just perfect. Like we rarely get freckles on Pokemon characters so Milo did it justice!

Sorry. That man has confidence and he'll rock it. He has won. But honestly, so many good ones here. I'm just grabbing Winona because she's likely my fave Flying-Type gym leader by design. Also shoutout to Brodie (the Phantom Thief) from the anime) * Sinnoh: Cynthia, Lucian, Riley (Iconic people and cool suits, yes. Volkner's low energy mood is really relatable though, and I do like Gardenia & Candice, etc. a lot too) * Unova: Ingo & Emmet, Colress, Grimsley (It's a shame to leave many of them out. Lenora is Badass, Drayden as well, Elesa is cool, but alas. And yes, you can't pick one Subway twin and not the other) * Kalos: Wulfric, Siebold, Malva (Many good people here too, great designs, but also many that are a bit too much for me) * Alola: Ilima, Olivia, Nanu (Love Gladion too though, they freaking nailed him. Edgy little man who is actually pretty good and caring. I'd maybe switch him and Ilima, but I just. I like both designs a lot) * Galar: Raihan, Kabu, Bede (Bede I know is a weird choice, but I like androgynous looks, he's left handed and the whole transition from a rival to a gym leader. It's simple but works so well. He looks much happier and just, glows. Opal gets a special mention - both her looks. Young and old. She's just. Absolutely grand) Oh you gave Hisui one? Nice, ok here's some from me for those Palina, Adaman, Cyllene, Mai, Volo, Cogita, Sanquia & Iscan Honestly? Such good designs and characters Ingo is still just Ingo, and we love him, but we also love Emmet and again, no separating the twins, they deserve as much As for player character designs Hilbert for me, absolutely. That's my fave and I'd love to be able to get that look in every game
Archie's glow up is the Epitome of the virgin vs chad meme. Gamefreak had the pirate theme in mind and basically went to 100 with not only Archie's design but as well as matt's and shelly's as well, too the point that I can imagine and draw the 3 of them as traditional pirates and it wouldn't feel weird. my favourite parts of Archie's design is his mega anchor necklace simply because i love the diverse ways the characters have their keystones. (Zinnia's mega anklet, Maxie's mega glasses, Wally's mega necklace and Steven's very literal mega ring) which is why ill forever be sad that we never had the option to customise our key stone from the usual boring mega bracelet because if you ask me i would've loved to have a mega hairpin or chain on a bracelet. (Z rings i can excuse from this because i think as far as we can go with it is a Z-necklace but I'm getting side-tracked) The second thing i like about Archie's design is the fact that his bandana doesn't look vacuum sealed on. A minor detail yes but as an autistic artist who prides on details, its good to see that there's actually hair under there and not just a ring of hair that the beard attaches too like how i imagined his RSE hair is. So yea! TLDR: Big agree on Archie's design being the best in oras. the CEO of having a theme and being completely diverse with it. Also Archie has the benefit of being *Really Freaking Ho-*

That's why I love Pokemon Masters, which places an emphasis on the main series characters we know and love.

A lot of the designs are still subdued like the trainers, the rivals (generally), villains have been pretty chill since xy, characters like oleana and wicke, supporting characters our sonias and peonies
Im not sure if anyone noticed this but it always seemed like every generation the Clothes that the people of the pokemon world wore kinda matched the aesthetic of the time period the games were released in. Like Flannery to me looks like a early 2000's "Rebellious" teen. While Nessa looks like a modern Instagram model doing a swim suit ad.

I love how the human designs have gotten better over the years. Not only in terms of diversity (which is good) but they are also more distinctive and memorable. If there's something I love about Galar, it's the character designs (Sordward and Shieldbert were... a choice, but the rest of the designs were awesome).
I respect your opinion but in term of character design, I personally think the serie has gotten wors over time. I just really love the gen 1 and 2 league members, I think they are all just so iconic, Misty, Erika, Surge, Blue, Jeanine, lance, Mortimer and jasmine are just amazing and Albert, will, karen and sabrina are some of my favourite designs ever. But in general I like the art style of the character design, and they provide a wide range of personality and appearance. Theyare realistic enough to not appear goofy, but yet have clear design elements that make them unic and recognizable.
And by the way, I know these designs are the result of years of anime appearances, multiple video game redesigns and I'm certainly not praising the RBY sprites and I'm sure modern designs could surpass them with the same level of redesign, but as they are, HGSS sprites just look like perfect to me.
In another hand, I'm sorry but I just don't really like modern trainer designs, even my two favourite pokemon games (X and Black) just doesn't make them anymore appealing. I just find the designs either one dimentional or caricatural, making them less appealing as actual characters. I will be fair, there are exeptions, for exemple I think Elesa's design is fantastic but in general I find the average design way wors, and I'm still trying to find a design that impresses me in Alola.
As for Sword and Shield characters ... I'm sorry I just really dislike most of them. To be fair, I like Kabu and Marni's designs, Hope and Sonya despite being annoying in the game have fairly decent designs as well. But the rest of them are either umemorable and random or strait up awful. The fairy and dark gym leaders look like crush candy papers to me.
These designs just lack death, subtility and humanity, they just feel like jokes because of how overly caricatural they are, but at last still doesn't give me any impression.
Anyways, I'm happy someone like them, it proves that there are things for everyone, I hope you didn't take this comment too seriously.

A) They had more time to flourish
B)Pokemon as a franchise was at its peak around that time
The newer designs incorporate various unique elements, broaden the cast of characters in multiple regards(diversity, syncronity with Pokemon and types, etc.), and have much deeper personalities than previous gym leaders. For example, the Galar water type gym leader, Nessa, is much more fleshed out than Erika due to how she incorporates more water elements compared to the amount of grass elements Erika includes, but also has a much deeper character and conflict as she is struggling to balance both modeling and gym battling.
@@thatsprettyfarfetchd9888 Again my problem is that they are too caricatural to feel like real characters. Like the Kanto gym leaders were characters that happened to be specialised in a certain type. The newer gym leaders feel in my opinion too much like embodiments of their types. You took nessa as an exemple but most of the newer character designs are way more extreme. And even nessa looks sort of dead inside, like she has a personality but her design really do not convey it at all. And even then, the writing in these game is so awful that a good idea can very easily turn into a 10 years old's homework.
Also their designs completely differ from the original art style of pokemon to become very cartoonish. It's not necessarly a bad thing but the problem is that they are in a game where older designs are still their so it's really incoherent, unlike in franchise like Zelda where the whole game change its artstyle to match the new aesthetic.
I think one of the problem is the way they were created. The gen 1 designs weren't definitive at all when the game launched and had the room to grow deepen and change over the course of the franchise. They could easily reinterpret a character to make it more appealing.
In newer generation, when a character is revealed, it is already in its definitive state and can no longer change, so if a character is launched in an underwhelming state because the devs weren't inspired when the game launched, it will remain underwhelming. They aren't versatile enough compared to older designs.

Falkner: his design fits Johto's traditional Japanese aesthetic very well, and he's canonicaly handsome (particularly popular amongst young girls)
Roxanne: her ORAS redesign from school girl to teacher is incredibly appealing, one of the biggest glow ups in rhe series
Bertha: you can tell exactly what her personality is just by looking at her
B2W2 Bianca and Cherem: their designs are mature while still being unmistakeably them, and the way Bianca gaining glasses implies her clumsiness was partially due to bad eyesight is super cool
I agree with Bianca in BW2. She became more adult-like while still has the clumsy cute charm. For her wearing glasses, maybe because she became Prof. Juniper assistant. So she kinda overworked her eyes. But something intrigued me. Cheren lose his red rimmed glasses in BW2, while Bianca wears a red rimmed glasses in BW2. Coincidence? Did Cheren recommend her his favorite glasses brand? Or... Did he give her his glasses as a present?

I agree there! They present some interesting dualities with being more morally gray. Sidney and Karen are not above using shady tactics in battle, but they accept loss gracefully and offer great insight about what being a Trainer is all about. And Piers is the definition of punk rock, but also an undoubtedly chill and nice guy.

Imo the Hisui protagonists (Rei (Lucas) & Akari (Dawn)) deserved to be on the list as well.
They have the most unique looking protagonist designs in the series (obviously due to the setting of Hisui). It's detailed and simple at the same time. Especially the scarfs and hats of their original counterparts were implemented really well. I love those designs :)

i really appreciate you bringing up the fan theory that N is neurodivergent! it's a near and dear concept to me as an autistic person, the way he's written just SCREAMS neurodivergent to me and it's really nice hearing a popular poketuber bring it up so nonchalantly :]
I didn't really like N at first, but as I saw how he developed in the story, I definitely can see that in him. That plus the fact that N probably got very little social interaction with people in his early life other than those affiliated with Ghetsis and Team Plasma. As someone with autism as well, I can appreciate this representation and believe this theory to be true. It brought him to tie with three others for my favourite rival.

Leon's Cape also symbolises the pressure he has put on him. It is said I game that his own cape is very heavy which symbolises how much stuff he has to do as a champion and how that is possible hurting him

I really love how the elite 4 of Kalos has and amazing designs; even if they're not so good in the history. But man, Siebold has such and amazing design for a water elite 4 and Dracena too, cuz there designs fits soo well with the theme of there pokemons and proffesions! Unfortunate gamefreak didn't give them the relevance they deserve.
Siebold´s design to me looks like a potential Kalos champion design. And Drasna kinda looks like a design that could be a champion as well but for the unova region.
I also love how (based on recent previews) the anime gave Drasna black eyes without any highlights. It just adds to her designs since it gives her a cold, soulless stare to her opponents whenever she gets serious, just like a dragon preparing to attack its adversary.
Drasna is my favourite character in XY because shes just straight up nice to you while everyone else is mean in the e4

I really like how it was pointed out in N’s design that the extra accessories he wears add credence to the idea of him being neurodivergent - I personally always read him as neurodivergent/autistic (partially also cause I’m autistic & ND and ever since I was a kid I really had an affinity for him), and I’m so glad you mentioned it! :D
@Lee it’s not ‘coddling’ to see myself in another character for traits that I have always felt alienated from the rest of the world for my entire life, as well as facing prejudice. Good for you for never having to experience that alienation and prejudice, but that doesn’t mean you get to be rude for a completely valid read of the character.
And even if the traits he has as from him being a Pokemon as opposed to being a neurodivergent human, his outward behaviour still mirrors mine and is relatable to me, and could still be seen as an apt metaphor for my own experiences.
And as far as I know, N being a Pokemon still hasn’t been confirmed as canon, so he can still just be as easily read as an autistic or neurodivergent human, especially with traits like favouring being around animals, not seeming to care much for casualties in conversations, and ‘strange’ speaking patterns.
TLDR, you don’t get to say I’m somehow fucking ‘coddled’ for recognising similar traits in a fictional character to myself, shut up.

The protagonist may seem soulless (you know, lack of dialogue and all) but during cutscenes they really show emotion through body language and all have their own interesting and unique styles.
Unless it is gen 7 then they are an unphased mannequin with a creepy half smile watching everything.

My all time favorite design for a human character is Volo, especially his Arceus clothes, he looks so cool in his other design than his normal design and gives off a super hard final boss character feel; I also really like how he looks like Cynthia.

My man literally chose the best character design in Alola. No, but seriously. Guzma is literally my all-time favorite Team Leader because of his and the rest of Team Skulls' theme is amazing because I love skulls. Plus, his character is really amazing overall. And also, a lot of people could really feel connected with Guzma because of what happened to him as a kid.
if you’ve already seen my weird essay then don’t look at it here; here’s an explanation of my opinions on Alolan character designs for you (lol);
Gen 7 is my favorite generation in almost all aspects. Sometimes it falls short in character design that convey personality, or use basic designs. Some examples would be Mallow, Lana, and Sophocles, which kind of seem like they’re just… happy all of the time, even when they change expressions. Sure, they work, but a bit bland. Most are mediocre or just good, like base design Kukui and Lillie. Then there are better ones, for example Lusamine Transformed, Kiawe, and Plumeria. These convey their character well and aren’t expressionless or just happy. And then you have my three favorite designs in Sun and Moon, which far surpass nearly all of Generation 8. The Masked Royal, Olivia, and Guzma. Not many like the Masked Royal design, but I feel like it conveys the character of Kukui as the Royal perfectly. Then Olivia; she is really pretty, with a ton of beautiful details and a bunch of jewelry that really suits her look and aesthetic. And perhaps my favorite character design in the entire Pokémon franchise- Guzma. His facial expressions are amazingly expressive, his black, white and gold color scheme is truly beautiful and simplistic, possibly referencing his past trauma. All of the skull details like the tattoos, gold necklace, and back of the jacket skull that all get crossed out or removed after the game ends. The goggles and hair are my favorite part of his design because they feel so different and yet so in keeping with his character. And also, he’s hot. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I always thought something was off about Lenora's design. Doesn't help that the other obviously black characters in those games are basketball/football players, dancers, and the Fighting-type Elite 4. Marshall having that spot isn't the worst, but to me it's not a good look that he's the "brawns" when all the other Elite 4 are "brains" in some way.

I am one of those who thinks Valerie is beautiful, especially as depicted in the anime, where her eyes, even without pupils were surprisingly expressive, and her overall design matches perfectly with the whimsy of the Fairy type.
Also, I like Kahili and wish she got more love as a character.

I even once started to write a fan fiction with her as the love interest for the main character, though I never finished writing it (but I still wasn't to).
Valerie has probably one of my favourite designs in all of pokemon and shes definitely design wise an amazing introduction of what fairy type gym leaders could be!

I’m somewhat surprised that you didn’t bring up the fact that Guzma’s shades look like a sun and a waning moon. His shades also mirror his eyes in his iconic facial expression. Just perfect. And people wonder why Generation 7 is my favorite and has collectively some of my favorite designs than any other Generation. Beaten only in number by Generation 8, but all of it’s designs are in another plane of existence.
Personally i really like Grimsley's outfit, his unique Tuxedo match perfectly with his risktsker nature. The details on his pants reminds the colours of a roulette.
This peculiar outfit suggests us that he's or he was a nobleman.
In the end his hairstyle, that remind were inspired by Dracula, gives him that mischievous and sinister touch to the character.
I didnt know that lysia existed but as soon as i saw her i was like: "she sooo has an altaria" . Her character design works really well!
I love Arezu’s body type! I have a pear shape body type, and its rare to see girls on screen without super thin, pretty feminine legs. Arezu’s thicker hips and thighs make me feel less insecure about mine… I don’t really wish that they were dainty anymore, now that there’s a pear shaped girl on screen whos still portrayed as pretty and feminine :)

Out of the entire gen 8 designs, Opal is my personal favorite. Her half-retro-half-modern style makes her a perfect depiction of what Galar stands for and not just a stereotypical British old lady that annoys everyone
Not having Ethan on the Johto list is honestly nothing but a crime. To me he embodies the PERFECT young guy going on an adventure look. He looks sporty, he looks fun and it looks practical and outgoing. As a kid, I would 100% wear his fit. That cap is everything.

In my opinion Gen 8 has overall the best character design

So, Im gonna write quite a bit here. Gen. 8 has most of my favorite character designs, like Nessa, Raihan, and Magnolia. But… Gen 7 is my favorite generation in almost all aspects. Sometimes it falls short in character design that convey personality, or use basic designs. Some examples would be Mallow, Lana, and Sophocles, which kind of seem like they’re just… happy all of the time, even when they change expressions. Sure, they work, but a bit bland. Most are mediocre or just good, like base design Kukui and Lillie. Then there are better ones, for example Lusamine Transformed, Kiawe, and Plumeria. These convey their character well and aren’t expressionless or just happy. And then you have my three favorite designs in Sun and Moon, which far surpass nearly all of Generation 8. The Masked Royal, Olivia, and Guzma. Not many like the Masked Royal design, but I feel like it conveys the character of Kukui as the Royal perfectly. Then Olivia; she is really pretty, with a ton of beautiful details and a bunch of jewelry that really suits her look and aesthetic. And perhaps my favorite character design in the entire Pokémon franchise- Guzma. His facial expressions are amazingly expressive, his black, white and gold color scheme is truly beautiful and simplistic, possibly referencing his past trauma. All of the skull details like the tattoos, gold necklace, and back of the jacket skull that all get crossed out or removed after the game ends. The goggles and hair are my favorite part of his design because they feel so different and yet so in keeping with his character. And also, he’s hot.
But yeah, I mostly agree with you.

It's interesting to see how trainer designs have evolved over the years as I watch your rankings. Neat that even the merch and games (aka pokemas) have started to give these awesome designs more love, too!
I feel like HGSS Misty is an underrated design. Talked about her Let's Go design, but I don't know, I just like the idea of her wearing a swimsuit because her gym is literally a pool, but she still wears a jacket over it so it looks like it can just be an outfit she wears everywhere if she wanted unlike her gen 1 game design where she is wearing just a swimsuit. It also has hits of blue to add to her water typing theme if that wasn't obvious from the literally swimsuit. HGSS Misty also kinda reminds me a little of RS Wallace but like was mentioned in the video that look might not fit Wallace as much as his other designs. I'm personally a fan of the cape he has in Emerald and B2W2, gives him little extra flair while keeping that cool jacket... and not to show my love of the water type trainers too much, but Wake doesn't even get a mention in Shinoh? I love Wake's design shows a side to the side to water type gym leaders we really don't get to see. I mean we have other swimmer trainer designs like Misty, and elegant water type trainers like Wallace, granted Wallace and Misty are probably the best versions of those two designs, but when it comes to Wake I just don't think there is another trainer like him. You might be able to argue that Wake's design is more fitting for a fighting type trainer like Chuck, but to me it kinda takes the showman aspect Wallace and Juan had and just goes a different direction with it. Water can be tough, and beautiful, it can be a form of art and a type of show and I think Wake just covers the side of things characters like Wallace and Jaun just don't.

The best thing about Gladion and Guzma's designs to me is that they're both clearly *trying too hard.* Gladion's goal is to get stronger at all costs and so he tries to dress the part of a tough guy, but all the crazy spikes and the hair and the piercings are so tacky and it's the perfect representation of what a young boy thinks being tough looks like. And Guzma is similar, he dresses like a street thug but not like...the real kind. He's more like a rapper version of a thug that wears a lot of bling and goes on and on about how big and bad they are, when in reality it's all talk--and that's kinda what Guzma is. It's a simple yet genius design.
Also I am very happy to see Marnie and Steven on here because their fashion is seriously on point. Leather jacket + cute dress is one of my favorite styles ever so I fell in love with Marnie's design the second I saw her. And Steven is just a good-looking dude all around.
I would like to give some special mentions to a few characters I love you didn't mention:
- Will, who I think does embody the Psychic type pretty well, and his mask/spectacles add to the mysteriousness that comes with the type. I'm going to go further there and say that Will is probably, to me, the most attractive character, but I can't pinpoint why exactly.
- Phoebe, her design is such a massive contrast to the type she uses which I always liked, and it fits her personality so well.
- Bertha, who looks and acts like the grandmother I wish I had. Her outfit is plain, but not at all old-fashioned. She keeps up for sure.
- Wikstrom is a character with a lot of (sadly) wasted potential. He is a knight, which fits the theme of Kalos and the Pokemon League fairly well and the fact that his armor fits so well with Aegislash's awesome design really bumps him up a lot for me
I think my absolute favourite character designis Archie. Like, they hit the bullseye with his ORAS design.

I actually laughed at the fact that Archie had a redesign that reveals his muscular traits and it reminds me of that Simpsons scene where Homer and his family went skiing and he saw Ned Flanders outfit which made him forget the instruction because of "stupid sexy Flanders".

I'm glad that Drayden made it to #1 in Unova, he is one of the hottest male characters in Pokemon. Personally, I feel that Volo should also get an honourary mention in Hisui, I like his final design in the last battle. Its a bit goofy yes, but love the manic personality at the end with an outfit inspired by Arceus and battle theme directly referencing Cynthia's.

I'm really not sure how the Team Magma leader and admins redesigns didn't make it, they're just as good as Aqua's, even though they go for completely different styles and energy.
My thoughts too. I think people tend to gravitate towards Archie and his team because they have a "cool" factor to them. I love them too, but I don't think the designs of Maxie and Team Magma should be seen as lesser simply because they have different vibes to them. Maxie and his team are meant to be the polar opposites to Archie and his crew. And while there's nothing wrong with preferring cool, rowdy pirate types to the more organized and nerdy members of Magma, it doesn't mean the Magma designs are inferior. They serve their purpose very well. I especially love Maxie. You look at him and just instantly know what kind of person he is. He's just as wonderful as Archie to me.
Archie is a CHAD
Hilda is the first Pokémon character to inspire me to have a head canon. Her outfit is fantastic.
Hilda had 1 of the hardest designs to connect with for me, I'm not a tomboy. Of course I was also disappointed by Lyra replacing Kris. Gen 5 needed trainer customization way more than it needed the hidden music feature or the severely underused new battle styles that were barely in the game. As a girly girl I like the Paldea Uniforms so much better.

Trainer Leaf was my first cosplay I made something from scratch (the skirt) and still one of my favourites to cosplay. I like the remade Aqua and Magma as well and Cynthia is always iconic
Technically there are team Skull grunts with names, they just so happened to be named "Grunt".
When it came on to Johto, I immediately thought of Clair because she’s the only Johto character I remember besides Lance and Karen. XD.
I was absolutely positive Ramos would be #1 for Kalos, but wasn’t on the list entirely. He’s probably my favorite character design in all of Pokémon.
Milo being a head shorter than Nessa in the concept art is hilarious and terrifying.
I know it may be basic but Milo's design from Sword and Shield is one of my favorites. He's obviously a farm boy cause since he has a Wooloo farm shown in Twilight Wings and he may look big but he's actually really sweet and his cute green eyes with his freckles was just perfect. Like we rarely get freckles on Pokemon characters so Milo did it justice!

* Kanto: Green.... I guess Lorelei and I dunno, I like Blane's game designs. It's Much superior to the one we got in the anime. Love his humorous game personalities compared to the somewhat easily agitated one in the anime
* Johto: Archer, Morty, Karen (Bryce and Proton do be good too though)
* Hoenn: Steven, Wallace, Winona (Wallace owns everyone. Sorry. That man has confidence and he'll rock it. He has won. But honestly, so many good ones here. I'm just grabbing Winona because she's likely my fave Flying-Type gym leader by design. Also shoutout to Brodie (the Phantom Thief) from the anime)
* Sinnoh: Cynthia, Lucian, Riley (Iconic people and cool suits, yes. Volkner's low energy mood is really relatable though, and I do like Gardenia & Candice, etc. a lot too)
* Unova: Ingo & Emmet, Colress, Grimsley (It's a shame to leave many of them out. Lenora is Badass, Drayden as well, Elesa is cool, but alas. And yes, you can't pick one Subway twin and not the other)
* Kalos: Wulfric, Siebold, Malva (Many good people here too, great designs, but also many that are a bit too much for me)
* Alola: Ilima, Olivia, Nanu (Love Gladion too though, they freaking nailed him. Edgy little man who is actually pretty good and caring. I'd maybe switch him and Ilima, but I just. I like both designs a lot)
* Galar: Raihan, Kabu, Bede (Bede I know is a weird choice, but I like androgynous looks, he's left handed and the whole transition from a rival to a gym leader. It's simple but works so well. He looks much happier and just, glows. Opal gets a special mention - both her looks. Young and old. She's just. Absolutely grand)

Ive never been attracted to any characters in Pokemon until Adaman, so this number 1 spot is very well deserved
Archie's glow up is the Epitome of the virgin vs chad meme. Gamefreak had the pirate theme in mind and basically went to 100 with not only Archie's design but as well as matt's and shelly's as well, too the point that I can imagine and draw the 3 of them as traditional pirates and it wouldn't feel weird. my favourite parts of Archie's design is his mega anchor necklace simply because i love the diverse ways the characters have their keystones. (Zinnia's mega anklet, Maxie's mega glasses, Wally's mega necklace and Steven's very literal mega ring) which is why ill forever be sad that we never had the option to customise our key stone from the usual boring mega bracelet because if you ask me i would've loved to have a mega hairpin or chain on a bracelet. (Z rings i can excuse from this because i think as far as we can go with it is a Z-necklace but I'm getting side-tracked) The second thing i like about Archie's design is the fact that his bandana doesn't look vacuum sealed on. A minor detail yes but as an autistic artist who prides on details, its good to see that there's actually hair under there and not just a ring of hair that the beard attaches too like how i imagined his RSE hair is.
So yea! TLDR: Big agree on Archie's design being the best in oras. the CEO of having a theme and being completely diverse with it.
Also Archie has the benefit of being *Really Freaking Ho-*
