  • This week's adventure was a trip to Chino Airport and the Planes of Fame museum to see the Northrop N9M Flying Wing fly. While there, they were gracious enough to give me a tour of the other Northrop, Grumman and Ryan airplanes that they have in their inventory. If you haven't been to Planes of Fame, make sure to stop by and pay them a visit to really learn a lot about aviation history.

    Thanks for this video. David Vopat, Chief Pilot for the Planes of Fame N9M was a good friend of mine and an amazing person. When he wasn't flying for the airlines, he was flying really cool small planes. Rest in peace my friend.

    The wing was a beautiful plane. I got to see it a few times on the ground in museum. never saw it fly in person. Very sad that it was lost and David the pilot as well. You can see his love for the plane in this video.

    I used to work at the Stuart Florida Airport where Grumman had a repair facility for the OV-1. They also built the wing center section of the 737 for Boeing and had a bill board saying "The heart of of every 737 is a Grumman".

    RIP David...
    Impressions of a Pilot
    Flight is freedom in its purest form,
    To dance with the clouds which follow a storm;
    To roll and glide, to wheel and spin,
    To feel the joy that swells within;
    To leave the earth with its troubles and fly,
    And know the warmth of a clear spring sky;
    Then back to earth at the end of a day,
    Released from the tensions which melted away.
    Should my end come while I am in flight,
    Whether brightest day or darkest night;
    Spare me your pity and shrug off the pain,
    Secure in the knowledge that I'd do it again;
    For each of us is created to die,
    And within me I know,
    I was born to fly.

      As I have stated in replies to other comments, the event was centered around the N1M but I did talk to the staff/volunteers about other legacy Northrop Grumman aircraft. I also asked them to tell me if the aircraft was flying or could be restored to flying status. My thought behind this was that I would put this video together because, as I stated in the video, I do work for Northrop Grumman and would like to see our company donate more money to restoring these pieces of our (NG & US) history. Thanks for the feedback, though.

    Actually, the purpose of our government chopping up those aircraft was so they couldn't reach the market. As it was, sales of airliners and work planes was much lower because of all the surplus aircraft. If that sounds like a wasteful practice, it is.

    What a disappointing video with a misleading title. Most of it was not about the wing. And we never got to see it fly. I saw the original before it was restored when I was a lead engineer at Northrop. Incidentally, the two logos on the nose are both hoakey and incorrect. The Northrop bird-in-triangle logo was different back then, much heavier and forceful.

    What a shame that thexe people are not as interested in honesty as they are in bragging.
    The most successful wing aircraft was built long before this thing took to thd air,
    It was built and designed bynthe Hougton bros in Germany and was powered by jet engines.
    It was removed from Germany by America who took it to bits and stored it away for near on sixty years before someone worked out that the build and materials made it the very first stealth aircraft every.
    It was very good, so good that when Hitler demanded a plane that could fly a thousand miles and back and carry a thousand pound bomb the Hourgthon brothers designed a four engine vesrsion from which thevdesign for the American stealth bimber was copied, if you saw the two put along side each othermost would be hard pushed to understand that one of the two was designed in 1945,
    AT ABOUT A HUNDRETH OF THE COST OF THE AMERICAN VERSION.

    • @ufjason99

      John Laccohee-Joslin thanks for the feedback. The first flight of Jack’s N1M was in 1940, five years before the US found the 229. This was also not his first flying wing design, those of which came in late 1920s. Additionally, I am not sure that the 229, I guess that is what you are referring to as being the “most successful wing aircraft,” was the most successful wing aircraft. I would give that to the B-2, but if you want to say of its time, I think some clarification of successful would be required. I could be wrong about this, but I don’t think the 229 ever saw combat.
