    I use this very same machine successfully for rock tumbling but only for the polishing stage. Rotary tumblers are used by me to get rough rocks smooth enough to be polished.

    You need to use tumbler media in a vibratory tumbler... so yeah its not working correctly. For rocks ceramic works best because the grit doesn't get stuck in the media so you can change grits without having to swap media.

  • @ZmarleneZ
    @ZmarleneZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    so, you must know by now that the tumbler needed to be filled about 3/4 up and if you don't have enough rocks you need to add ceramic media to make up the difference.

  • @davidsturtz1731
    @davidsturtz1731 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    you have to load it with more rocks to get the tumbling action needed to smooth the rocks better

      The bowl should be at least 2/3rds full

    i think you need to add more rock and water

    This tool is ONLY used for polishing, steps 2,3,and 4. This initial grinding, step 1, is done in a rotary tumbler. Also, you need to add more rocks or ceramic pellets to your batch.

    When the bowl is correctly 2/3 to 3/4 full, the rocks will slam into the interior retaining washer. Replace the interior washer with one has a smaller radius.

    Doing a update on the harbor freight vibrating tumbler?

  • @jameshislop8819

    So how do the finished rocks look after step 4? Any updates? I’m trying to use the machine for steps 2-4 with ceramic media. Doing step one in rotary using plastic media. Trying to speed up my process. Any tips?

    I'm a newbie just ordered, a vibe , ( not received yet) ,
    At 4.30 the tumbler motion looks all wrong ? , the stones should get moving from the outer edge of the bowl towards the stem of the bowl ? , if they are just shaking like this will they still polish please?

    I am using one right now; this very machine. I've done two large batches (about 14# each) with the Step 1 grit. I'm using it to smooth, not necessarily 'round' the stones. Using mixed sizes of stones from small marble- to hand-sized rocks, and it's doing a wonderful job in less than a full day for each batch. I check about every two hours. Unfortunately the machine I'm using is one that was discarded by an industrial entity and it has developed a leak in the bottom of the bowl (which obviously had a lot of wear). I love this machine and will just get a new bowl. Most of my stones/rocks are quite smooth to begin with, but just the first step has made them stunning when wet. My goal is just to get them as polished as that 'wet' look. Did you figure out that the bottom spout is for attaching a rubber drain with hand-clip open/close? Allows you to drain and/or save your media if it's not worn out. I'm not new to collecting but am new to polishing. Every source I checked mentioned that rotating tumblers are far more effective for producing round stones while vibratory are faster and great if you care less about having 'round' stones. I'll try to remember to add a note after I've finished the current two batches but am dead in the water now till I get a new bowl.

      Cool. Trying to remember, I think I pondered the spout for adding liquid to the aggregate/media - sounds like dry media if small enough would also work though. I think the bowl was HD/LD PE plastic - you might be able to layer some milk carton sides over the hole or something like that in the interim. PE can be melted to bond, but adhesives don't typically work well. (Polyethylene) You might be able to screw it in though as a simple short term patch. Just thinking out loud. :)

    Hey thanks for the review, appreciate your look at this. I would definitely line the interior and exterior with truck bed liner as well as the lid, masking off the seal areas then when the coating was completely set up i would glue the rubber seals in place for permanence. I would also completely check out and modify if necessary any of the mechanisms (knowing HF).

    Most of the hounds I know use a rotary tumbler to round the rocks then finish them in a vibratory to final polish. This just occurs on certain types of rocks I am told. I am just learning myself.

      do step 1 and 2 in a rotary tumbler or you will wear the tub out . after step 1 and 2 in the rotary then you can run step 3 and 4 in the vibratory and it doesnt wear the tub so bad

    using the medium they use for metals work well and filling the bowl almost full with medium and stones will give you the rotation you are looking for that was happening with the rotary tumbler/ For more information research VIBRATING FLAT LAP ROCK POLISHER LAPIDARY TUMBLER

    Use the vibratory for the last two stages and the rotary tumbler for the first two. Also national geographic tumbling grit is horrible. Polly plastics is better.

    There is a tube with a clamp that attaches to the drain he thinks is in the wrong place. 🙄

      It did come with the tube spout in the wrong place. Mine did as well. The bolt goes in the drain hole at the bottom and the tube goes in the overflow hole near the top.

    I herd these are garbage for rock tumbling yea i didn’t want the HF rock tumbler and my boss buys me it and sure as shit it won’t spin the barrel it does like one lap n gets stuck and I seen a video where a guy hooked up a wheel from a roller blade or whatever and that kept it from doing what it’s doing to me. There cheap made in China so you get what you get

      I've been investigating rotary rock tumblers thru Harbor Freight. They are poorly rated. This is also carried by Harbor Freight. For the rotary version every step has to run for a week. If I remember correctly. I don't think any of them round your stones or take out cracks. Hoping you had better luck with the machine as time progressed.

    I'm disappointed. I saw this tumbler being used in this young genius guy that builds robots. I don't believe this is for rock tumbling. His media was nearly full. It is used for deburing rusty parts and cleaning up edges etc. This fellow was making a robot to assemble a 4000 piece all white puzzle. For the scanner to read the puzzle parts, the pieces couldn't have fuzzy edges. He cleaned up the edges of a cardboard puzzle so they were perfect. I wish you would have reviewed this for what it was meant for. Cleaning up parts.
