Leo you always say that you're a boatbuilder and a sailor, but you never mention that you're an artist and a filmmaker, which is just as true, and perhaps even more true these past few years. This is one of the most extraordinary and beautiful filmed documentaries ever made, and you will be recognised long into the future not only for Tally Ho, but for this saga.

Have enjoyed these videos for four years Leo, keep them coming, they such works of art. For those of us who love boats and craftsmanship, these videos are a real tonic. Then when she finally splashes and you raise her sails, with luck there will be enough support to help sponsor her voyages. Bravo.

My dad and I built a 17-foot wooden sailboat back in the seventies when I was a kid. (Correction: I watched him build and handed him the tools) He was a carpenter by training and had never built a boat before but decided to try it. He ordered some plans through the mail and went to work. We spent fifteen years sailing around the Chesapeake before he finally sold it and I went off to college. Seeing your work on this boat made me feel like I was watching him all over again...Thanks.

I know it may seem like a lifetime, and yet in retrospect, yes, it has only been a mere 4 years since we chatted online about your future aspirations for Tally Ho. It was back in the early days of this channel, well before many folks had found it. Leo, I am in awe when I think about what you have accomplished. You've made yourself into a world-class, credentialed shipwright, wooden boat builder, artisan, historian and craftsman of the first water. You have managed to create several soon to be six figure businesses, or possibly a non-profit floating marine biology école ou deux, once again created out of thin air, that only a vagabond dreamer and true romantic would have the sheer imagination and courage to have taken on without any fear of failure or expectations of success.
Success has always been a given with you, Leo. People just know it. We have always accepted it as fact, and in listening to you six months ago, back here in Sequim as you were getting ready to transition over to Port Townsend, you speak of leaving it all behind when you've finished with fulfilling your personal commitment to the Albert Strange Association, all in pursuit of the next great adventure. And dammit, I believe you.

The heavy timber join at 7:39 has to be one of the most satisfying scenes in this whole build. Such accuracy on such a grand scale is the picture that's worth a thousand words and speaks volumes about the respect for the ship that's been present all through the restoration. That kind of passion and respect for the soul of this craft is what I love to see being made real from all of your and your crew's hard work. Authenticity and historical thoughts are hard to come up with “correct” answers. My take has always been that the vessel would most likely be one of the lost ones that are scrapped or destroyed and in rebuilding and making changes for the longevity of the vessel your just adding to the history. I would love to see an old wooden vessel that hasn’t been changed in some way since it was first built. Ship building is both a science and a fine artwork.

I also came here on the recommendation and listening to Leo explain the background story along with his story I felt I should apologise that I am so late to the party .
So I’m now going to subscribe and slowly watch the previous videos in the series and from the sounds of it from all the comments I have already read , this is going to be an enjoyable experience.
I work in film and tv and notice that those who have a similar background have commended Leo on his talents as a film maker and editor . With the enormous task he has set himself I totally understand the amount of time that has to be added on top of this for the post production. It is a time consuming job and there are no shortcuts you can take either as there is nowhere to hide with editing or dubbing the sound ( part of my area ). Sounds like he is a man of many talents .

I am a little confused though. Unlike most other jobs, we don't mind if the videos are a little slower or shorter, and Leo could hire an editor to get his extra nights sleep. Surely he must have realised this himself if it is at all possible. And I don't see why it wouldn't be.
This channel often goes for the highest quality in everything from little details in the boatbuilding to little details in the video. I deeply hope that Leo doesn't feel pressure to keep up being perfect. We like the project, even if the videos are a little bit less perfect. Yes we will be sad when a video doesn't come out as planned, but what are we going to do?, nonwatch the video and unsubscribe from the channel in protest, hell no, we like the project too much for that.
If you happen to be Leo and you are reading this. Know that you are allowed to make mistakes. You are allowed to struggle. You are allowed to be less perfect sometimes. You are allowed to give yourself some slack.

Imagine, you are in the 1300's in the UK. You are "gifted" an old rotten boat with more holes than planks. You sink all your wages into materials and free time into building. Your wife is constantly mad at you for not saving up to buy that horse you've been needing to make the trip to the coastal town easier. Your two son in laws tend the fields but have little respect for a man who doesn't even tend to his own land. After all, that boat is priority number one and you're the only one who thinks it. After 10 years of backbreaking labor, it's done. You are now the ripe old age of 38 and you want to finally start voyaging across the sea. You gloriously set the boat up in the harbor and invite and old friend, a retired sailor, and his son to take a trip to the French port of Brest to sell your grain at a markup to afford some spices to put in that god awful porridge you've been eating for the past week. You sail for 17 days only to see a ship fly the 'ol black flag. A chat window pops up on the lower left of your screen "FishPlunger69: LMAO noob merchant ship GG EZ"

Even though we will not be ever able to sail the blue. This boat has so many sailing with her. She will never be at a port where someone will come to say hello..Even though I live 2200 feet up like many others. Far from the ocean. I learned estimating as a function of the kind of work times the square footage. Then add for expendables, overhead, taxes, and profit. The number of manhours divided by the amount of days available gives you a figure for supervision hours. Design, detailing, material takeoff, sub bids, and material procurement are all figured per job. Or you can just round it off to 2 years.
