We learned about the original R.O.C 11 Dash Line as a school student in Taiwan (Rep of China). It was drawn in 1947 after China recovered all the islands after World War II . The 11 Dash Line linked all the islands together to clearly mark China territorial waters which was at the time recognized by the American and international community.
The American recognition of the 11 Dash Line lasted until San Francisco Conference in 1951 when the American specifically excluding China from the conference as the Communist Party in China-controlled most of mainland China at the time and proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. At the San Francisco Conference, the American made unilateral arrangement in an attempt to deny Chinese ownership of their islands that was previously international recognized belonging to China and put all these islands into a dispute. However, at the time no one including the current neighboring claimants bothered to dispute China's claim to these islands and reefs, but China also did not have the ability to consistently enforce its sovereignty to these islands due to lack of military power and internal weakness caused by WW2 and the Civil War. Neighboring states only started to violate China's claim, occupying certain islands and reefs when it was speculated that the South China Sea might contain oil and gas.

Yes, including the Senkaku Islands but until now Japan still refuse to return all those island to China, with USA supporting them. Now that China has regain its strength and power, Japan & USA should not continue to deny China's rights and territory.

Thank you for sharing. Can you please elaborate on what it means for China to "recover" the islands in 1947? How and in what sense? Did ROC had actual control? Also why didn't the US support ROC's claims on the islands in 1951 since it recognised ROC as the government of China?

As Indonesians, we actually understand why China wants the South China Sea. I think China is afraid that if they don't claim it, someday America will build a military base there. But still, that doesn't mean we agree with China's way. The enmity between China and America is not our concern. Do not drag us into your enmity with America.

@@Albert_Einstein_not . The territorial claim of Marcos Jr has no basis at all. UNCLOS does not apply to territorial sovereignty matters. Who brought the matter of dispute between Philippines and China? Not China and not Philippines, but the Americans. Why did the Americans brought the matter to the PCA and not the ICJ (International Court of Justice)? By the way, when Malaysia and Singapore had a dispute over territorial sovereignty of the Pedra Branca, which lasted from 1979 to 2008, the two nations were sincerely trying to genuinely solve the territorial sovereignty issue, and hence chose to bring it to the ICJ, which has jurisdiction over such matters. The American Law firm which initiated the case to be heard by the PCA (which is not a UN body) on behalf of Philippines was likely aware that the PCA is just an arbitration court, which has no jurisdiction over the legal hearing of territorial disputes. Ask yourself why? Is the purpose for public relation publicity and optics to shame China , and not sincere effort to resolve the territorial sovereignty rights?
"Ill-gotten gains", even in public optics, by duplicitous means do not endure. The two countries - China and Philippines will always be geographically nearby each other forever (until the end of the World) to come, long after either USA, or China, is still consequential nation..
