Elephant, Pisa Has a Medical Treatment for an Abscess with Our Wildlife Vets

- Pisa recently needed medical attention from our wildlife vets, Dr. Peter Rogers and Dr. Ben Muller. Pisa developed an abscess on the skin underneath her, between her back legs. Dr. Rogers arrived to treat her and sedated her with standing sedation, while he took to draining the abscess and administering antibiotics and painkillers. Elephant Manager, Tigere stood by young Pisa's side throughout the procedure to keep an eye on her and keep her calm in case she started to wake up. Adine filmed the process for us, capturing the closeups of pus draining from the abscess. Please fast-forward if you're at all squeamish... Dr. Rogers then gave Pisa medicine called an antidote, to wake her from the sedation and she quickly took to moving off. The team kept watch over her as she rejoined her friends, Timisa and Kumbura.
Two weeks later, we felt that the abscess had not drained sufficiently and was still swollen, and called in Dr. Muller since Dr. Rogers was busy with a rhino procedure. Dr. Muller similarly sedated Pisa and helped to further drain the abscess, making an incision to remove the pus, and inserting cloth swabs to soak up the fluid. He also boosted her with Vitamin E to support wound healing on a cellular level and other mineral and vitamin supplements, as well as more antibiotics. Altogether this did the trick and the abscess has healed well and Pisa has recovered beautifully.

Khanyisa guzzling her bottles always make me laugh. So thankful Pisa could get relief from what looked like a painful abscess. What a dreadful thing to have happen in such an innocent way. Hoping that her healing is permanent. As always, thanks to all for being so attentive to the elephants. ❤

@susanmorris5520 U finally found the notation..."it was thought to be a puncture/sharp scraping from Tall grasses with sharp needles at the tip. " When they forage in these tall sharp plants/grasses they can be seriously scratched or punctured. The grass can create sores or lesions that if not cleaned can cause infections and cysts.

I don’t recall ever seeing any info on the info part of the video and no, I didn’t even watch the video and just went to read everyone’s comments and I saw your comment and I wanted to comment on yours. I’m aware of hearing about the elephants getting cuts and wounds from trees that are sharp but, if it has been there and I’m sure they knew about it then why couldn’t it have been sooner to deal with it if it was there sooner? My feeling is that since it had puss in the wound and it was infected then the human h8m to do is get it fixed asap right? This just didn’t happen over night and not out of nowhere. If it was that way then it wouldn’t have puss in it that fast. I know about wounds cause I’ve had two of them a couple of years ago and had to stay off my butt and it took quite sometime for the first one to heal and then eventually surgery and the second one was awhile but it ended up healing but with seeing a wound doctor. I think strongly that Pisa was injured by one of the bulls, not grass.

Poor Pisa, that abscess looks painful, and Timisa was shoing concern for friend, Good to Khanyisa getting her breakfast.. Dr. Rogers is a terrific Vet. Herd is fortunate to have a skilled carring Vet. ❤

Thank you for showing us some of the injuries animals can sustain simply by walking through the bush. I can't imagine how strong and hardy those, who have no humans to look after them, truly are.

That has to hurt. Poor Pisa. That’s a tender area to get an abscess. The vets are amazing. Pisa is one of the lucky ones. Wild elephants would just have to suffer with an abscess and worse.

That’s interesting, I thought when you sedated an animal they would lie down, didn’t think Pisa would be sedated and stand,,,,,Pisa has great companions, carers and vets, she will feel so much better 💙🐘
Horses will remain standing too. I guess it depends on the procedure and the amount given.

It’s called BAM sedation from what I have heard and read. It’s pretty amazing to be able to sedate an animal fully enough to perform painful invasive procedures on them without them feeling it most times but be able to have their limbs not relax and collapse them. Isn’t God amazing to create something that can do this and give man the knowledge to access and safely use it. For His creatures care by us humans. Thank You Lord.

Poor Tigere, I could hear the distress in his voice when he saw that one particular procedure was painful for her. I tell you, standing sedation is one of the best things ever invented. Imagine if this wound happened to an elephant in the wild, how awful it would be.

Poor Pisa, what an ordeal, she's a toughie and will recover beautifully. Just look at our Gorgeous Fishan surviving his injury. The wild is a dangerous place even for these beautiful elephants who have HERD and the wonderful Carers who truly CARE!! Was anything lodged/stuck into Pisa's skin?

Just me but thank goodness for Dr Muller. That abscess needed to be cleaned and covered with fly repellent to properly heal. Thank you Tigere for your care as well as the rest of the Human Herd.

I actually watch kind of a lot of these because I do animal rescues where I live - with me it's just dogs and cats, however. Abscesses are the most common problem. 👍👍👍

Poor Pisa She had a reluctant abcess in a place subject to friction not easy to care for or healing But now it is just a distant memory and she'll be able to make her Tomboy again It was so cute to see Timisa worried about her best friend as well as Kumbura and of course mummy Tokwe coming to check on her precious youngest daughter Love is in the air❤️🎵🎶

Oh, my heart went out to sweet Pisa when I saw how big the abcess was and where it was located. She must have been miserable walking at times. Thank you so much for ensuring she received medical care and making sure she's being well looked after by Tigere, the other carers and, of course, Adine. How did the herd behave with Pisa's problem? Did they slow the pace, come to check on her? Or was it "just a scratch, walk it off" kind of a problem for a huge elephant? If they were worried, then who especially, Tokwe, Limpopo, Timisa? Did they alert the carers that Pisa has a problem?
