In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Shiba Inu that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Companion Dogs
    Weight: 17 to 23 pounds
Height: 13 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder
    Life Expectancy: 12-16 years
The Shiba Inu is known for a bold, fiery personality. The Japanese have three words to describe the breed's mental traits: Kaani-i (spirited boldness), Ryosei (good nature), and Soboku (alertness). Combined, these traits make up the interesting, intelligent, and strong-willed temperament of this breed.
The Shiba Inu is small (about 20 pounds) and athletic. Like a ninja warrior, the Shiba Inu moves quickly, nimbly, effortlessly. He is keen and alert. And superior - or so he thinks, according to those who know and love this breed. The Shiba Inu approaches the world with a calm dignity that is uniquely his own, which is likely why he is also described as stubborn.
Because of his independence, the Shiba Inu is not the easiest breed to train. Socialization - the process by which puppies or adults dogs learn how to be friendly and get along with other dogs and people - and training should begin early to teach the Shiba Inu proper canine manners.
It is important to understand the freethinking nature of the Shiba Inu so you won't be frustrated. The Shiba Inu is highly intelligent, but he doesn't necessarily want to do what you want him to do. You may have to make him think obedience is his idea. For best results, it's important to work with a trainer who understands the breed's independence.
The Shiba Inu has been known to show the fiery side of his personality with other dogs and animals. He can be dog-aggressive, especially intact males with intact males. Most Shibas cannot be trusted off-leash because they are natural hunters and love the chase. There's a strong chance he will chase a squirrel, chipmunk, or cat. He is generally suspicious of strangers and is a good watchdog, alerting you to anything unusual.

Hachi was found at approximately 2 years old wandering in a parking lot, no collar or chip, filthy and not neutered. He is now 4 and I've had him for a year. He has become a wonderful companion after a great deal of training. Has his own strong opinions on what he wants to do. His name should be Houdini, he can get out of any harness in 5 seconds. He is very alert and possessive. He kept me up with barking last night because I didn't notice that Sophie the poodle was in his bed. He is now communicating well. Love my Shiba.

They really are known to escape! My shiba somehow escaped from the fenced yard a couple times, she did come back eventually but I guess she really tried so hard to run away. She is trained but she only listens when she wants to.

True. My Shiba is 11 now and he literally follows me around all day, he’s right by my side, but if someone accidentally leaves the gate open outside he’s gone.
I chased him for two hours once. Unfortunately, it’s just in their nature to escape and explore.

Both of my Shibas (I have a 1 year old male and a 2 year old female) are well trained off leash. Since the breed is so stubborn, a shock collar works well with them, but we hardly use it anymore since they understand what to do now. They definitely become more loyal with age!
