I grew up during the time when Phil Collins was only known as the drummer and backing vocalist in my favourite band. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis, and Phil stepped up as lead singer my friends and I were all rooting for him, (and the band), to continue with what I still think of as ground-breaking work. How anyone could take offence at one of the best drummers, singers, brilliant arranger/contributor, talented song writer and all-round good guy, is beyond me.

Phil has been a musical hero of mine for most of my life. The scope of his work and talent is astonishing, balanced by his sincerity and genuine joy in performing and collaborating with others. I always appreciated how he often identifies himself as a drummer first (even in this clip here). I was blown away by the power of his drumming with Brand X; projects like that and his big band work were fascinating - he accomplished so much more as a creative force than the box he was placed in by the success of his mainstream work.

Always liked Phil Collins. Monster talent and a guy that never took himself too seriously, but took his music seriously. Nice to hear him open up where many others in his industry hide! His sensitivity is admirable!

Phil Collins is the greatest singer, songwriter for me ever. He has provided the soundtrack to my life. He’s one of the few who are super successful who actually is worth the hype.

@@1970borntorun absolutely mate. Couldn’t agree with you more. KISS are so overrated. Their songs are basic and boring. Not saying they are terrible but way overrated. Pearl jam are just really dated now and overrated too.

If people want to know the brilliance that Phil Collins came from to become the solo artist that he became, just listen to Genesis' "Abacab" and "Genesis" albums...dynamic, memoriable, outstanding musicianship. Having a "pop" sensibility is not a "crime" folks, it was always there to a certain extent. Thank you for your openess and candor in this interview, Phil! Love ya man!

More talent in his little finger than most musicians have in their whole body-fabulous drummer(across a range of genres),good singer, wonderful songwriter, great performer. What a legacy-people just can't stand success & hardwork. And his work with John Martyn on a couple of albums is seldom acknowledged.

Your body of work is timeless and will stand the test of time. I think the backlash you've received is a result of the overexposure you had, when you dominated the radio airwaves, TV (Miami Vice) and movie soundtracks. I'm glad the tide is turning for you, you are a legend.

I love this dude and have done for many years. Genesis saved me from a shitty teenage time and through Phil's drumming I was introduced to jazz with his ferociously funky drumming in Brand X. I saw Genesis many times back in the day and Phil solo on his very first solo tour at what was then the Hammersmith Odeon - in the nosebleed seats! Another concert he pushed security guards out the way outside the Royal Albert Hall to walk to me and my then girlfriend to say hello and sign my tour jacket! I was speechless, gob smacked. Lovely fella, truly. I was smitten! So is this all leading to something you may ask? It is. As an audience loving gent and a consummate pro I didn't understand why he made what seemed little or no effort to get his voice back to something like it used to be in the early days, on Genesis' final tour. I understand why he couldn't drum so have no questions there, but surely efforts could have been made to better the voice through voice work and training. It just seemed like he didn't care which made me rather sad and confused.
