After watching quite a bit of LGR, I figured out what I love so much about these videos. A lot of channels have good production value, humor, and valid opinions, but LGR makes you feel like he's speaking directly to you, not to a massive audience. Even with 400k+ followers, I still feel like he's directly having a conversation with me. That's why I like him so much more than other game review channels. It just feels personal.
Lazy Game Reviews you are like a friend talking about a game. Not from a cold review stance. But someone that you sit with, in a bar, talking about games.
"Expansion pack" describes an explicit increase in substance to whatever it is an expansion to, whereas downloadable content, whilst implying that it adds content to whatever it's part of, doesn't explicitly describe that it's expanding the thing its part of.
unless if it's story DLC like the Tyranny of King Washington or about any of the notable ones from the Bethesda-era Fallout games, DLC doesn't exactly denote "expansion pack" expansion pack denotes an expansion to the game. like, as in additional story.
but they really did 'expand' on the original game. so you end up with 125% of a game. the 100% of the content you originally purchased and the expansion. nowadays, they take the 100% of the game, release 50% of it as a full game, and drip feed the other 50% marketed as DLC. its a disease practice, and its everywhere
As a older gamer who was around for the Atari 800 and other 8 bit microcomputers and the rise of the PC. Man I would love to browse your collection in real life. So many great memories. I remember in the Army my fiends and I would drag our PC's down to the dayroom and create a LAN for multiplayer Doom free for all's. Great time.
Really miss retail expansion packs. Always fun walking into the store and seeing all the expansion packs on the shelves, most places in my area just stick PC games in a corner somewhere almost forgotten.
"If it's Tuesday, this must be the Autobahn!" (Top Backside of Scenery Box) *1:29* Clearly I missed something, as many a Tuesdays have come and gone, and I am fairly sure that I'm NOT the Autobahn. Nor have I ever been there, WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN!!!!!
My favourite thing with expansions was the glitch for Sims 2 University and Sims 2 Deluxe. If you had both installed and nothing else, you could not play the game. Putting in the University disk prompted the Night Life disk. Putting in the Deluxe disk prompted the University disk. It was hilarious as it was painful.
Hey Clint, speaking of "thick things" you like, just wanted throw an idea out there for another one of your "retrospective" type videos. Maybe you'd like to go over the rise and fall of the game manual? I was looking at some of my old games the other day and I stumbled on Across the Rhine. Not only did it come with a reference card and a thick manual, but also with a friggin' BOOK on the history of tank warfare in WWII. So sad that we're never going to see things like that anymore. Now we're lucky if we get installation instructions on a slip of paper! So, might be nice to reminisce about the good ol' days of game manuals!
Ever seen the manual that came with Police Quest 4 ? It was a shortened version of the LAPD officers manual... you don't see that kind of attention to detail and immersion these days. Also another good mention was the Falcon 3.0 manual. I bet real Air Force pilots wouldn't feel lost reading through it! Clint also mentioned a few times the Sim (City, Tower, Earth, Health etc.) manuals that were always substantial. Anyway, those days are unfortunately gone. Now we get a PDF manual that contains three pages of black and white uselessness...
Second that, and/or to do a video on classic PC gaming "box extras" in general. I remember when I was a wee lad with an old C64 that some of those text/adventure games got prertty friggin' elaborate/creative with all that stuff. Ultima: Quest For The Avatar had a gold-lettered faux-leather bound book of spells, and a medieval style cloth map. Another game from the "Enchanter" series came with an guild pin you could wear. Really neato stuff. 'Course I lost most of it wheh Pops went through his "uber-Ned Flanders" phase. :P I wish they'd go back to that stuff. In quality at least!
Thanks for reminding me of 'Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe' and it's wonderful manual - alone worth the price of the game. Hey, Clint - how about a SWOTL review?
+chris Evans I enjoy discovering new smells of dvd cases. Different companies smell different and budget studio releases, like Sushi Typhoon or The Asylum, smell disturbingly of meat.
It would be neat if Steam had a thing where you could buy a cool box with cool stuff inside it of your favorite games and EPs. Rather than mass produce a bunch of them that either won't last long or might not even get sold, a custom high quality box gets made when you order it. You can either use the studio's official design if they have one, purchase/use another users design through Steam Workshop, or submit your own if none are available.
I agree completely! It's just such a great feeling to go to a shop, or even to order online to be honest, and then hold your game in your hands. It's more tangibly yours.
+irllcd13 that is my grandma at the moment. she wonders why I like dvds, blu-rays, and disc games. she wonders why I don't just get it digitally and throw out the physical versions.
Lord of Destruction is probably my favorite one. Diablo: Hellfire is another authorized 3rd party expansion and Crysis Warhead was a standalone expansion.
Great video as always! Yes, I remember the good old times. I had all data disks for Test Drive 2 on the C64. And besides Duke and Quake there were tons of expansions of DOOM and other ego shooters,
The Sims 2 expansions are definitely my favourite ones, probably because there are so many of them. I still have all of them sitting on my shelf, even though I don't play it anymore.. but I just like to see them up there, nicely organized and aww.. this feeling of looking through booklets while waiting for the game to install instead of those boring .pdf files nowadays. It's just not the same anymore!
My favourite boxed expansion clearly is Carmageddon Splat Pack! That feeling of joy and total surprise when I spotted the Splat Pack back in the day in a store and never even know there would be an expansion! That were the golden times before the internet! :D
You have one of the best voices on the internet. Also half the time I can't believe it when I see you talking and hear you talking because they don't quite match up in my head.
As far as I'm concerned the best expansion pack for a game ever was Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge. And yeah, I really miss the days when an expansion pack actually meant something.
MUSTDOS I was a huge fan of TA, and yeah I played the expansion pack to death. Though my biggest excitement was finding out about the modding scene for TA and just the sheer scale of insanity that it turned the game into.
I like how games like Skyrim and Minecraft build in the ability for users to create their own expansions. They still make a kabillion dollars, and other companies that nickle and dime their customers to death are baffled. "Ahhh! You could have made Quintillions! Why did you throw that money away!!!!?" And then they have an eye-twitching meltdown and curl up under the desk in the corner office. Because sometimes creating an awesome game with an incredible community built around it is satisfying enough. I know, it's strange, right?
kevnar People have actually found that one of the reason why games like Skyrim and Minecraft became so popular was because of the open, endorsed (by the creators) modding community. Games without that ability don't get as popular, as they restrict the player so much. The companies allow the community to build, grow and create, which builds the companies' popularity more, creating an almost endless loop of profit for the company, and popularity of the game. That's what I like to think at least.
It's not altruism. If your users create interesting content for you, your game is a better deal that will appeal to different people. Half-life is a good example; let's say you're some kind of freak and the base game itself didn't appeal to you; it would have still been worth it for the level editor and mod code access or for the great mods like science and industry, counter-strike, day of defeat, natural selection, pirates vikings and knights, the specialists or action Half-life. These mods and the longevity of the game sold a lot of copies of Half-life 2 and gave Valve enough good will and leverage to get away with creating Steam. People are naturally super-sceptical of attempts to create a walled garden on PC; the only other company that could have gotten away with it is GOG. Ubisoft or whatever have their own thing for their own games; can you imagine most PC games being sold through uplay? I cannot. What would Half-life have been if it had no mod support? It would have sold a couple of million copies back in 1998 and then people would have forgotten about it.
Exactly and theres those companies that dislike people modifying their game so they have a specialized drm designed to stop would be modders or some other method
diablo 2 expansion :( a whole new act, new kinds of items that are through the entire game, two new classes and more of everything and change the entire game to more from the original beginning to the end.
Sims 2 expansion packs were probably all cut content, but they did not do it for money. They had lost almost all content in i think a flood? Making the game rushed.
My sister and I used to be huge fans of the Sims and their expansion pack. Before Sims 2 was released we actually had the original game and all of the expansion packs, bought either on or within a week of the release date, and had them all installed on out PCs (which was incredible since they weren't very powerful gaming PCs, just standard work laptops for school work).
Nice Jazz Jackrabbit music. Also nice how you showed the back of most boxes in a readable resolution. It's fun to know how they advertised Duke3D & expansions at the time of their original releases.
I used to have a big box copy of the first Unreal Tournament release, no idea how I lost it. Only games I still have boxed these days are Shadow Warrior and Dungeon Keeper.
I miss the thick booklets they used to include with games. When I was a kid, that's what I looked forward to on the way home from the store. I'd open up that big ass booklet and read about all the characters and their moves, and the storyline. It was awesome. Seems like they just don't give a crap about that anymore.
yeah, the old sims expansions for the first game have a special place in my heart. I think i got the original game + livin' it up in the same box. And then the expansions one by one. They really did expansions in one of the best ways back in the days
Oh man you are so Right about the feeling of stepping into a store and see all the gorgeous boxes and grab one to take home :) nostalgia indeed ! Too bad I was a teenager and didn't have money to buy the whole store but I have my small precious collection of boxes to this day and i think the 90s were the best pc games era
90s were great indeed, especially game console wise..even tho not released till 2000, the ps2 was great..it introduced the first game in final fantasy series to have actual voices for characters plus the console itself carried 100s of great games which are much better than todays because games today have no good storylines or good gameplay..of course i cant leave out metal gear solid tho that was a great game for the ps1..basically todays gaming, its the same fps clone, bad example of a real rpg or worse...devs rush and worry too much on graphics instead of things that really matter...graphics dont mean the game great...whats the sense of buying a game for $60 thats not worth playing....when return it you dont even get a full refund all cause the box is open....when final fantasy x, x-2 and xii came out i bought very first day and when i heard of the undubbed, international and other versions i had to get them as well...sure there are some good games for todays consoles, but in my opinion all consoles from ps2 and before it are better than today in terms of actual gameplay and replay value...also you didnt have to worry about getting scammed or ripped off from paying an extra $60 for something that should of been in the game in first place...yeah pc games had expansion packs but expansion packs were actually worth paying money for and at least some had programs which let you build your own maps and such
My favourite is probably the GTA Episodes, and I love how they got released a digital download and a boxed version. I wish more companies would do that type of stuff for their digital downloadable stuff since I'm a physical copy kinda guy but there are tons of digital games/expansions I'd like to try out too.
The only instance of a "stand-alone expansion" I can think of from the past decade or so would be _Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker_. It's pretty much the mechanic used in the Captain Toad levels from _Super Mario 3D World_ expanded into a full-fledged game. It fufills the purpose of an expansion pack, and it doesn't require the latter game to play. Plus, it retails at only $40 if I remember correctly, and I can never consider an expansion pack as such if the base game retails at the same price.
Gameactive There was also saints row's "Gat out of Hell" "Expandalone". Otherwise, they seem to be on the decline with expansions and "expandalones" outside of The Sims and World of Warcraft
Packaging & physical media allows the player to take pride their purchase (the same principle that applies to everything really). The packaging can also hype up the game and can make gamer feel more emotionally engaged and connected, even prior to playing the game. Imo - it's a fundamental experiences absent from media downloads of today. Even the slim dvd gaming cases just don't compare to the awesomeness of the larger cardboard boxes of yester-decade.
Those videos are the jewels of lgr's crown, I mean videos about, disk copy protection, box stickers, catalogs, that's what makes this channel so special to me. Also, there is one type of expansion you didn't mention, that's the early 90s "speech packs", like the ones for Privateer, Strike Commander, Ultima VIII, Earthsiege etc...
Thank you, glad you're enjoying :) And I kind of lump those in with "data disks" that I talked about at the beginning. But yeah, I do wish I'd have at least shown one speech pack.
Is it strange that I am somewhat addicted to scanning the titles on your shelves to catch an old game I once loved and have since forgotten..? Happened just yesterday when I saw SWAT and went straight back to the old SWAT 4 game! Keep the nostalgia coming, mate!
Diablo II expansion pack was more than a precious for me... and when I moved out my little brother kept it in a shrine ever since....until baal returns
I caught the Diablo 2 wave late and bought the Battle Chest back when it still came with Diablo 1, circa 2003 or so. The Lord of Destruction Expansion might be my favorite expansion pack of all time. It fixed and added a lot. Anyway, it's probably one of the best purchases I made in regards to a PC game. I'm also quite a fan of Medieval II: Total War and it's expansion packs, specifically the Crusades expansion. Good times.
Major thumbs up for showing off both MechWarrior II and Falcon 3.0 (Hornet) expansion packs, loved those games so much! The Falcon expansion packs always came with new paper maps and the MiG 29 Fulcrum pack came with a really cool Soviet fighter pilot poster that I hung on my wall in college. Still have it.
Heroes of Might and Magic III had two of the Best Expansion packs. "Armageddon's Blade" added a ton of monsters and a whole new faction. While "The Shadow of Death" added a new play mechanic with artifact combinations. I miss the days of Boxed games, Things started to go down hill when the Boxes were standardized...
Armageddon's Blade was easily one of the best expansion, I agree!! All those new neutral units and of course the elemental faction! The story was pretty nice too!!! I found the story of Shadow of Death a little lest interesting but at the same time Sandro is the best freaking character ever (but it makes things a LOT easier than most campaigns)..
Yesss! We didn't have all that many games in my house, but HOMM III was played to death. I went on a holiday with my parents one time, and in a store I came across the Armageddon's Blade expansion, and I told my parents that if they wanted to get my older brother something, this was it! I can't really remember whether the Conflux was actually any good, but any new content for the game was appreciated.
Love those old boxes! I have a bunch of games from that era. I liked them precisely for what you described: showing on the shelve or displayed next to the PC for the box art. They kinda stopped doing it since about 2001 or 2002 or so, from then on they all came in (modified) DVD boxes (maybe an idea for another episode?). Last old style boxed game I have is Diablo II Expansion Set "Lord of Destruction" (talking about expansions!), although the Lord of the Rings Mines of Moria box comes pretty close to that old size. I remember buying SimCity Terrain Editor and finding some of those "skins" for the simcity buildings at friends back in the day. Some genius friend I had made the perfect Simcity city with all buildings maxed out, having a population of about 16 million or something :p I truely love your channel for these kind of nostalgic videos :)
If I had to pick one best expansion, I'd go with Shivering Isles. It fitted the definition of a whole new world perfectly. Also, Sheogorath, the Prince of Madness. 'nuff said.
Diablo Hellfire was a great "unauthorized" expansion by Sierra of all companies. And there are a few other gems out there like the Master Levels for Doom II, etc etc. I'm happy to say that I a lot of these bigger title games in box as well, some of these are insanely hard to find now.
opposing force was awesome and clever making you the enemy soldiers at the same base with extremely many new things like following allies who actually did more, more guns, unique enemies and environments, a completely new kind of flash light which was awesome and of course a badass feeling that everything was upgraded! the scenarios were bigger, the threat was larger and greater, it's like they polished the great and added parts in the empty spaces as you can see in sequel and expansion art that add more on the original art
I like it when you do these laid-back, "talk about a topic" videos. Somehow, they seem both so relaxed and spontaneous at the same time. I think you ought to do more of them, especially if they're easier on you. The Sims franchise is the only franchise I've ever used expansion packs for if memory serves; I don't game that often. But of those, I think my favorite that I've purchased is "World Adventures" because of its (more or less) diverse new content. Of the ones I don't have, I would point to "Seasons" for its... seasons or maybe "Ambitions" for its new jobs and washing machines.
It would have to be the Sims 2 expansion packs. Especially when university, seasons, and open for business came out. I was so excited for them because the content they had was never done before in the Sims. Let's just say I played the Sims 2 -a lot. Lol
For me, the first expansion pack for a game I ever had as a kidnwas Roller Coaster Tycoon, Corkscrew Follies. New rides, new maps, new challenges, new ways to kill your park guests with sadistic glee, it was a real blast! And getting Loopy Landscapes for Christmas a year or so later made it even better. Anyway awesome video, keep up the great work!
Lazy Game Reviews namcos It needed the 2nd Disk of Jedi Knight to be installed, but didn't need Jedi Knight itself to be installed. It was a odd expansion.
Lazy Game Reviews Mysteries of the Sith was weird. Technically it was stand-alone but the copy protection required you to insert the original Jedi Knight disk in order to install it.
I just remember buying a few of the The Sims EPs off the Scholastic Magazine from school. It was such a great feeling coming back from school and having that box in the mail.
It was a really BIG pain to hunt down all the DUKE NUKEM 3D packs and actually getting them to work on newer engines so i can play them on 64bit windows 7. took me weeks!
I attribute three games to my interest in PC gaming; Oregon Trail for the Apple IIc, Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?, and watching my friend load up Diablo on Windows 95. I enjoyed watching your thick packages.
I actually like the expansion packs being smaller - it shows from a distance that they're not full games, but rather lesser bundles of content that expand upon an existing game. I think a nice aesthetic would be the full games being the same size, and the expansions being a smaller size, and then having them along the shelf like some kind of "heading->subheading" kind-of thing.
When I was a kid, my favorite PC game was Rollercoaster Tycoon. I was so happy to walk into the store and see "Loopy Landscape! Expansion for Rollercoaster Tycoon (+ Corkscrew Follies)", I still have my copy, and I think the box as well.
fallout 3 dlc was also cool on disc. shame i still have my shivering isles pc , but only xbox oblivion :/ my friend borrowed it and never gave it back!
I remember going to the shop specifically for the Alien vs Predator 2 expansion called Primal Hunt, which was awesome as hell! I watched the date like a hawk as I loved the original and remember many fond hours playing that game to death.
My favorite memory of expansion packs would have to be when I first got the B-Wing expansion for X-Wing. I loved that game so much! It really felt like you were piloting a star fighter with all the keyboard controls. I was always a huge fan of the Star Wars universe that existed outside of the movies, and the X-Wing game as well as the awesome TIE Fighter game were such great experiences for me! Edit: @10:00 that is some great art of Wolverine!
This wasn't an exhaustive listing of every expansion pack, or even all the interesting ones. It was simply a broad overview of certain types of boxed expansions, and I did indeed mention unauthorized expansions in the video :)
LukeOfTroy IT WAS HELLFIRE! and i thought it was made by sierra i remember the wizard casting something on the opening cinema and demons come out, and you get to be the monk, which is just average in everything
I remember my first ever expansion for a game... The Sims: Hot Date waaay back in the day... 5 of us would go to a friends house and play the game trying all the new interactions and locations they added. It was like an adventure!
I remember picking up 'map packs' for command & conquer. They were pretty cheap and certainly were not authorized. But they kept me playing the game for years longer than I would have.
+Lazy Game Reviews For wally world shelves, theyre not too bad as long as your stuff isnt super heavy. They will sag if you put stuff heavier than books on it. But of course our games are generally quite a bit lighter than that.
I remember buying Tribunal expansion for Morrowind. I was so hyped. Saw so many great mods require it and finally found it in the store. Came with a thick manual, game DVD, and a HUGE poster that was the map of the new city. Expansion done right. Played it and got mods too, the feeling of satisfaction was through the roof. Reason for that was not only did the expansion expanded the workd with new locations/items/monsters, but also expanded the modding tools and scripts, further progressing the modding community.
You like thick things, eh? Well, I've got something thick for you, Clint. ;) ............................................in particular, the Complete Works of William Shakespeare. I don't know if you're a fan of his work, but it is a pretty thick book.
The Roller Coaster Tycoon Loopy Landscapes and Corkscrew Follies expansions were pretty awesome because they added a substantial amount of content to the game. It didn't really feel like the same game after you installed it.
There were a couple of authorized StarCraft third party expansions, Insurrection and Retribution, in the time between the game's original release and the release of Brood War. They were both pretty mediocre, partially due to the limits of the official editor, and are pretty rare these days. They are at least much better than the one unofficial expansion, Stellar Forces, which supposedly is much worse. Oh, and I think there was another unofficial one that even had some custom units and cutscenes and stuff that was only available in like one country.
Fully agreed. LGR videos always seem like they want nothing more but to just tell you about something cool, something interesting or...Something. And they're made in a style that combines all of the qualities that make one a good youtuber plus the added extra of seeming like he's just telling you, the singular viewer, something cool or interesting. Thanks for countless hours of entertainment. I just started watching your Thrift Vidoes which are also just as amazing and seeing you reply to comments on old videos and thanking people personally makes you seem even more grounded. You're probably my favorite TH-camr at this point, but picking favorites over something as subjective and diverse as YT videos isn't really feasible IMO. If I had to pick though, it'd probably be you. Have a great day, man.
I kind of miss the the good old Sims, unlike a rabbit hole restaurant or book store or cloth store or shops the shops back in the days are actual lots.
Ahh.. The Duke Assault map pack! I was contacted by whoever made it and they asked if they could include one of my Duke maps, my mind was blown! I agreed of course, I suppose my map drowned a bit in the other 1499 maps :) ... But they were nice enough to send me a copy of the CD, still have it.
My memories of expansion packs are mostly of the Sims. As in hunting down and dishing out hundreds for every expansion/stuff pack for the Sims 1 and 2.
Amazing video Clint and yes expansion packs are worth remembering. Blizzard had many amazing ones like Beyond the Dark Portal for Warcraft 2, Brood War for Starcraft, and my favorite Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.
Many people might remember the official expansion to StarCraft by Blizzard: Broodwar, but how many remembers the authorized expansion: Insurrection? The original Command & Conquer had The Covert Operations by Westwood, but also unauthorized expansions like Defcon most of them we're just people grabbing things from the Internet and putting them in a box though.
The last boxed expansion pack I purchased was Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath. It had tons of new content, but also a very nice manual and sweet box with it! As someone who shares an apartment with a roommate, I do enjoy the convenience of DL'able EP's (I don't know where I would put all the boxes for all the Sims 3 EP's). But I definitely agree it is a bit sad thinking many future PC gamers may not ever have that experience of either going to the store and bringing home or unwrapping one for a birthday/Christmas/whatever in the future due to parents just thinking "You know what? I'll just give him/her a Steam Card." :/
Rainbow Six was an interesting case. Rogue Spear was basically a standalone expansion more than a sequel, but it had many expansions for itself. Cover Operations, Urban Operations, there may be more but I'm tired. They were fun though, is what I'm getting at. Had some SWAT style stuff in it. MechWarrior was known for standalones. Both Mercenaries games are spinoffs of their normally-numbered counterparts. MechWarrior 3's expansion Pirate's Moon has been mentioned already and for damn good reason. IT'S CRAZY. The brutal difficulty puts a slight damper on what was a pair of very fun campaigns, but there were enough new mechs and voices and GUNS GUNS GUNS to keep it fun. And the one music track. If you need any further proof, it's almost impossible to find a copy of Pirate's Moon, though that might be because it tanked and nobody bought it to begin with? Who knows.
well blue shift was awesome, just very sort, the other expansion for half life; opposing force was alot better as it had new guns and was alot longer still amazing games all of them. Thinking about it i wish Clint would do a review of half life.
Favorite expansion? Hm, not a person to have favorites but .... Sonic and Knuckles, why? It's possibly the only real cartridge expansion ever made that did expand the game greatly with new levels and a character, also features as well, AND it was playable on it's own and could change Sonic 2 by letting you play as Knuckles. Truly a strange expansion that did a lot more than you'd think, yes it was technically the rest of Sonic 3 but considering that the game together would have been 32Megabits (I believe) that would have been a $100+ cartridge had it been together
Chosen1Creator Considering the sims 3 is several gigs and the expansions are large as well, annnnnd the largest genesis card is 24megabits I believe......... :V super tall.
HissinSpit Awesome! I wasn't sure what to think at the time either, MOSTLY because I never heard of it and saw it at a blockbuster for sale, I bought it, saw the weird cartridge top and well, after fiddling craziness and mind-blowing was happening. Also running fast, that too.
Even though you mentioned it at the end as still doing it, I loved when burning crusade came out for world of warcraft and I went to the store to buy, the whole ride home was waiting to play it. I think expansions felt great because you were just adding content onto something you already loved as opposed to hoping the new game you just bought was going to be good.
Do you got Starcraft:Insurrection or Retribution and if you do could you show them to us? These were expansions that were not made by Blizzard but authorized.
I was thinking exactly the same! I remember I had a pirated cd with them two and two more inofficial Starcraft expansions on it. I even think I spotted Insurrection I think it was in the late 90's at a games store right here in scandinavia!
After watching quite a bit of LGR, I figured out what I love so much about these videos. Lazy Game Reviews Hi.
His videos are legitimate. That's what I like about em. Everything mentioned in OP's post is completely valid. Great video, as usual LGR.
Lazy Game Reviews you are like a friend talking about a game. Not from a cold review stance. But someone that you sit with, in a bar, talking about games.
Spot on. And that's the description I've been looking for regarding +AdoredTV
Just me or "Expansion Pack" honestly sounds way cooler than "DLC"?
Kinda old-fashioned and retro in a way, but nevertheless cool
"Expansion pack" describes an explicit increase in substance to whatever it is an expansion to, whereas downloadable content, whilst implying that it adds content to whatever it's part of, doesn't explicitly describe that it's expanding the thing its part of.
unless if it's story DLC like the Tyranny of King Washington or about any of the notable ones from the Bethesda-era Fallout games, DLC doesn't exactly denote "expansion pack"
expansion pack denotes an expansion to the game. like, as in additional story.
EA ruined the concept of DLC
but they really did 'expand' on the original game. so you end up with 125% of a game. the 100% of the content you originally purchased and the expansion.
nowadays, they take the 100% of the game, release 50% of it as a full game, and drip feed the other 50% marketed as DLC.
its a disease practice, and its everywhere
frl man
As a older gamer who was around for the Atari 800 and other 8 bit microcomputers and the rise of the PC.
Nowadays most PC games being sold at stores are steam cards not even boxed PC games. Sigh
A very solid recent stand alone expansion I would say, though it's still just digital, would be Far Cry 3's Blood Dragon. That was bloody amazing.
Cryaotic agreed
It's phisical on the far cry compilation
Hm. I never took you to be an LGR fan.
I hate 80s but I love different takes on a single game. Better to buy it
"If it's Tuesday, this must be the Autobahn!" (Top Backside of Scenery Box) *1:29* Clearly I missed something, as many a Tuesdays have come and gone, and I am fairly sure that I'm NOT the Autobahn.
The biggest thing I miss is that new manual smell.....
+angelived Big box PC games had such glorious manuals. I'd take them to school with me and daydream about going home to play my new games.
+angelived i smell too. try 60s marvel comics.
+chris Evans and the dark and older magic the gathering cards. some good shit
+chris Evans I enjoy discovering new smells of dvd cases. Different companies smell different and budget studio releases, like Sushi Typhoon or The Asylum, smell disturbingly of meat.
Melchiah The Obscene
oh my
It would be neat if Steam had a thing where you could buy a cool box with cool stuff inside it of your favorite games and EPs.
Absolutely. When I heard the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon stand-alone may be getting a physical release, I about jumped for joy.
One of my favorite authorized expansion packs was Hellfire for Diablo made by Sierra On-Line. awesome stuff.
Man, those Baldur's Gate boxes... So much greatness inside that cardboard.
I pissed off my parents by insisting on saving all my game boxes. They just don't get it.
No sir!
Clashman The Third
They didn't like how much room they took up. They said they were "junk."
+irllcd13 that is my grandma at the moment. she wonders why I like dvds, blu-rays, and disc games. she wonders why I don't just get it digitally and throw out the physical versions.
WarhammerGeek14 That's a pretty modern grandma you've got there. Mine barely understand how "the internets" work.
Same here. I gave in though, threw away half my Gameboy box collection ;-( And the didn't take up that much room. Now they're worth a small fortune.
I always loved the Roller Coaster Tycoon expansions. Gave you new scenarios and new cool rides to build.
Also, The Frozen Throne. Basically took WC3 and made it 20x better - especially the editor. Played that game for years on end.
Arthas :'(
Kersyl Ger same here. still play it sometimes actually
It's just not the same anymore!
i rather them be in the main game and the main game be more expensive
Booklets over pdfs is an interesting point. The MDK manual comes to mind, with its first person journal writing style and faux coffee rings.
MrCorrectify Sierra Entertainment did that with a lot of their games.
Game boxes are really neat but digital media is way better for the environment though
"I like thick things"
-She said 2014
+SpyBomber64 "There's all sorts of opportunities for expansion"
T H I C C

+Cameron Brett expand dawng
My favourite boxed expansion clearly is Carmageddon Splat Pack! That feeling of joy and total surprise when I spotted the Splat Pack back in the day in a store and never even know there would be an expansion! That were the golden times before the internet! :D
You have one of the best voices on the internet. Also half the time I can't believe it when I see you talking and hear you talking because they don't quite match up in my head.
As far as I'm concerned the best expansion pack for a game ever was Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge.
And yeah, I really miss the days when an expansion pack actually meant something.
+LittleMikey See total annihilation's expansion pack. It's like a new game with them.
MUSTDOS I was a huge fan of TA, and yeah I played the expansion pack to death. Though my biggest excitement was finding out about the modding scene for TA and just the sheer scale of insanity that it turned the game into.
+LittleMikey For a decent modern game with decent expansions, try sins of a solar empire
want a game where expansions mean? THE SIMS.
I liked the Diablo and Diablo II expansions, Hellfire and Lord of Destruction.
Command & Conquer has always had good expansions, especially Yuri's Revenge. I really miss physical copies too.
I know, it's strange, right?
kevnar **Cough**Cities:Skylines**Cough**
kevnar People have actually found that one of the reason why games like Skyrim and Minecraft became so popular was because of the open, endorsed (by the creators) modding community. Games without that ability don't get as popular, as they restrict the player so much.
The companies allow the community to build, grow and create, which builds the companies' popularity more, creating an almost endless loop of profit for the company, and popularity of the game. That's what I like to think at least.
Jack Taylor which is why I check a games list of mods before even thinking of getting it
It's not altruism.
Remember when expansions were expansions, and not cut out parts of the original release? God I miss the 90s.
diablo 2 expansion :( a whole new act, new kinds of items that are through the entire game, two new classes and more of everything and change the entire game to more from the original beginning to the end.
good time for gaming for sure, many of the games back then are better than most they release today
Yeah, I miss the 90s, when games barely ran in 360p at 20 fps.
Sims 2 expansion packs were probably all cut content, but they did not do it for money.
They had lost almost all content in i think a flood? Making the game rushed.
***** Better games > Better graphics
If the game is amazing, then a low resolution/framerate is a reasonable concession.
Yeah, Nice Jazz 2 Music & Also A Nice T-Shirt Pal!
Yeah, the best Windows logo. It's still on my keyboard I'm writing this very message with!
Oh man you are so
Right about the feeling of stepping into a store and see all the gorgeous boxes and grab one to take home :) nostalgia indeed ! Too bad I was a teenager and didn't have money to buy the whole store but I have my small precious collection of boxes to this day and i think the 90s were the best pc games era
90s were great indeed, especially game console wise..even tho not released till 2000, the ps2 was great..it introduced the first game in final fantasy series to have actual voices for characters plus the console itself carried 100s of great games which are much better than todays because games today have no good storylines or good gameplay..of course i cant leave out metal gear solid tho that was a great game for the ps1..basically todays gaming, its the same fps clone, bad example of a real rpg or worse...devs rush and worry too much on graphics instead of things that really matter...graphics dont mean the game great...whats the sense of buying a game for $60 thats not worth playing....when return it you dont even get a full refund all cause the box is open....when final fantasy x, x-2 and xii came out i bought very first day and when i heard of the undubbed, international and other versions i had to get them as well...sure there are some good games for todays consoles, but in my opinion all consoles from ps2 and before it are better than today in terms of actual gameplay and replay value...also you didnt have to worry about getting scammed or ripped off from paying an extra $60 for something that should of been in the game in first place...yeah pc games had expansion packs but expansion packs were actually worth paying money for and at least some had programs which let you build your own maps and such
Your ramblings on random computer related topics will always be my favourite! The longer (thicker) the better
My favourite is probably the GTA Episodes, and I love how they got released a digital download and a boxed version.
I wish more companies would do that type of stuff for their digital downloadable stuff since I'm a physical copy kinda guy but there are tons of digital games/expansions I'd like to try out too.
Its watching things like this that make me miss gaming box art of all kinds. They made sure that box was there to really sell you on whats inside.
+1 for liking thick things. And expansion packs. I miss expansion packs.
Thank you, glad you're enjoying :)
And I kind of lump those in with "data disks" that I talked about at the beginning. But yeah, I do wish I'd have at least shown one speech pack.
This was surprisingly informative. I had no idea Age of Empires and C&C: Red Alert had unofficial expansions!?
'nuff said.
"Fribble, just fribble!"
Plus that fork quest, pure gold.
Diablo Hellfire was a great "unauthorized" expansion by Sierra of all companies.
And there are a few other gems out there like the Master Levels for Doom II, etc etc.
I'm happy to say that I a lot of these bigger title games in box as well, some of these are insanely hard to find now.
Blue Shift and Opposing Force, ftw.
opposing force was awesome and clever making you the enemy soldiers at the same base with extremely many new things like following allies who actually did more, more guns, unique enemies and environments, a completely new kind of flash light which was awesome and of course a badass feeling that everything was upgraded! the scenarios were bigger, the threat was larger and greater, it's like they polished the great and added parts in the empty spaces as you can see in sequel and expansion art that add more on the original art
One standalone expansion from the top of my head, older than HL, is Star Wars: Mysteries of the Sith! :D
Hmm. It has "requires Jedi Knight to play" on the front of the box that I see.
Doug Holmes namcos ***** Weirdness, I did not know that. Will have to keep an eye out for it, I'm curious now.
Lazy Game Reviews Doug Holmes ***** I completely forgot about the JK copy protection!
My favorite expansion was oblivions shivering isles
fallout 3 dlc was also cool on disc. shame i still have my shivering isles pc , but only xbox oblivion :/ my friend borrowed it and never gave it back!
Magkno-Gaming My fave was Soaked for Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.
I swear this was the last traditional expansion pack ever made.
Magkno probably the single best expansion I know of. Shivering Isles was essentially a whole game you could take your Oblivion character to.
I remember going to the shop specifically for the Alien vs Predator 2 expansion called Primal Hunt, which was awesome as hell! I watched the date like a hawk as I loved the original and remember many fond hours playing that game to death.
If we're really trying to be nostalgic, it should be "C:\LAZY_G~1".
Surprised he didn't mention the valve unauthorized expansion to Diablo 1. That was an interesting little anomaly.
This wasn't an exhaustive listing of every expansion pack, or even all the interesting ones. It was simply a broad overview of certain types of boxed expansions, and I did indeed mention unauthorized expansions in the video :)
That you did, and it was totally awesome. Big fan BTW, thanks for doing what you do, it's brilliant :) particularly liking the thrift shop videos.
LukeOfTroy IT WAS HELLFIRE! and i thought it was made by sierra i remember the wizard casting something on the opening cinema and demons come out, and you get to be the monk, which is just average in everything
Jacob Gullick There was also the barbarian character you could hack.
SiliconBong barbarian character? I remember a sorcerer, monk, rogue and warrior that is all from diablo 1 and its expansion.. I never used hacks
This makes me nostalgic for the days of big, colourful, detailed yet chunky PC gaming boxes! I still think I have a few lying around somewhere...
My favourite expansion of all is probably Nickelodeon 3D Movie Maker.
I remember my first ever expansion for a game... The Sims: Hot Date waaay back in the day... 5 of us would go to a friends house and play the game trying all the new interactions and locations they added. It was like an adventure!
Jazz Jackrabbit OST playing in the background...
Bruh lets not get jazzy, that lil green fuck is forever ingrained in head.
Bruh lets not get jazzy, that lil green fuck is forever ingrained in head.
Holy eff dude!
These are beauties, true gems....
I love your collection and I also adore the way you show your favorites...
You are the man
i realy miss expansions, one of the last big expansions i can remember was oblivion horse armor lol,i mean the shivering isles
Well played, sir.
I pretty much spent 2 years buying Sims 2 expansion and stuff packs. Pissed off my uncle, but boy was it worth it.
you should definately review the Quake Xmen conversion kit
I remember picking up 'map packs' for command & conquer. They were pretty cheap and certainly were not authorized. But they kept me playing the game for years longer than I would have.
What shelves do you recommend ?
I use these
www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-5-Shelf-Bookcase-White/23555009
+Lazy Game Reviews You need an IKEA in your life.
+Chuck Bucy not everywhere has IKEA, I don't even think the east coast has it.
+alexander1485 At the very least, I know that there's one in Pittsburgh.
It didn't really feel like the same game after you installed it.
i miss going to the store and buying CDs... Today most games are just available by online shopping
I buy only physical Copys of Games. Do not buy digital and that will give vote to studios make physical game copys.
Juha Heikkilä why digital games last forever and take up far less space hell I have 200 games on steam plus 30 on origin
Man you just displayed half my childhood. Kinda brings a single gangster tear to my eye.
No starcraft mention? I mean come on They have one of the best expansions with the brood war It was even better then the original
I don't think he's ever mentioned StarCraft on the channel.
I was hoping for either a starcraft or diablo mention. sad they weren't in the video
He briefly mentioned in one video that he is not a fan of Starcraft. He does have it on his shelf though.
I remember seeing a third party Starcraft expansion that was in stores before Brood Wars came out.
That Windows tshirt.
Dat game collection.
Mmmm and baldurs gate.
When are we getting married? Plz.
Ahh, nostalgia. I remember seeing the D!Zone expansion in the store in the late 90s and thinking, "Almost 1000 levels, how is this possible??"
I kind of miss the the good old Sims, unlike a rabbit hole restaurant or book store or cloth store or shops the shops back in the days are actual lots.
I hope sims 4 is better
What 1990s porn movie did you take the background music for this video from?
My memories of expansion packs are mostly of the Sims. As in hunting down and dishing out hundreds for every expansion/stuff pack for the Sims 1 and 2.
I want that shirt
***** i do, stuff like insurrection looked like a lot of user maps though
Will you make a history of Sims games video? It's soon time for Sims 4, so...
Command and Conquer. Man I loved those games so much. Hoping for a sequel some time in the near future
If The Sims 3 were made for the Sega Genesis, how tall would the tower of cartridges be?
Chosen1Creator
Considering the sims 3 is several gigs and the expansions are large as well, annnnnd the largest genesis card is 24megabits I believe.........
HissinSpit Right, Sims 3 is about 7.1GB. In megabits that's 58,163. Biggest MegaDrive cart being 24mb...about 2,420 MegaDrive carts.

I remember how excited I used to be about every Sims (first one) expansion. Especially Pets. I had so many of those Sims boxes at one point...
