I can relate to this video when it comes to the differences between Norwegian men and women. My farmor was constantly saying "jeg elsker deg" to me and my siblings. While I never doubted my father's love for me, my mother, and siblings; I can't ever recall him ever saying that he loved us. He expressed his love for us by his hard work and always putting us before himself. I miss him terribly.
That was the funniest video yet! But even more interesting were the statues and dramatic winter fog and skies. So cool! Also, from America....I love you! I love you! 😄😄
Possibly your funniest video ever. I laughed all the way through, while at the same time feeling some good old-fashioned Northern European shame at the notion of having too much fun. The music added to the creepy-but-amusing factor. My in-laws were married over 50 years and I never heard either of them say "I love you" in the entire time I knew them. When asked about it, their comment was usually: "We are not mushy people." LOL! That defines understatement. They could have posed for some of those statues! Thanks for another great video. 💞
You chose the perfect weather to talk about love and Norwegians! The park looks amazing in a gloomy atmosphere! In summer this park must look completely different, a different mood! Just lovely! The Norwegian dancing (not moving the hips) is so cool ! LOL
OMG, love your videos, they get funnier each time! This was my father and grandmother. Very stoic never expressed any emotion of love. Very much the Viking eh?! Love your content!
Wow, that park is beautiful. I love the way the sky looks behind some of the shots of the statues. It is really cool. I would love to see it in person!
I am from the north of germany and we show our love like you norwegians like my boyfriens from south of germany told me after we visited norway for 3 month last year :D He often wishes, that i tell more about the "love thing" and i cannot understand, because i think, i show it without words and he is blind to see this way ;) but i try my best... So great content, you guys make, THANK YOU! :)
You know how to make my day, or night in this case hahahaha. I couldn't stop laughing the way you interpreted the Vigeland statues with the relationship cases. Now I wonder....are the statues the representation of Gustav Vigeland's struggles with relationships!? Like always...well done Ronald and Mads! :)
Growing up, my best friend was a "Norwegian" young man..he was stoic and a "deep well". As we got older, I knew he wanted a romantic relationship but he never verbalized..he showed his affection by making me a nice meal, fixing the breaks on my car etc. When I met another young man who was verbal and romantic...I spoke with my Norwegian but he still couldn't say he loved me...he said " U know how I feel"...I moved on...married and made a family with my romantic young man. Married 36 years until he passed. My Norwegian friend married very late in life and never had children
Sometimes, I feel like a rotten person, but I was only 20 and not experienced in relationships..my Norwegian was my only male experience and he never even kissed me on the cheek...he did hold my hand for approximately 5 minutes, 1 time in all those years...doesn't matter at this point
@@debisieger8299 everyone deserves love and affection. It isn't wrong to expect to be shown love outwardly. I am happy you found someone to share that with you. :)
Ronald you must brighten up everyone’s days in Norway. You and Mads are so cheerful, funny and honest. Your videos always make me smile, even when about serious topics. I still laugh about the sweaty cheese. . It’s hard to get to know Norwegians but when you do it’s a deep and true friendship. I hope the New Year brings you both wonderful things and lots more videos please!
Hi Oleander. I know you brighten up our days each time you share a comment!! Thanks for being so awesome. And we are so happy to hear that you have friends here. Good work Oleander Pink, beacuse we know its not that easy. Cheers from us :):)
Brilliant video as always .... recently started dating a Norwegian man....thank you so much for explaining through you videos ....at first he confused the hell out of me as I thought does he even like me as he never said it 😂😂
The more I watch the videos ....the more I don't understand how this man chose me as his girlfriend 😂😂😂 my family is from St Kitts in the Caribbean, people who know zero personal space and talk endlessly and I'm British born, another set of people who don't shut up 😂😂😂😂😂
Not correct. I live in Wisconsin. We have worse weather than Sunny Eastern Oslo. We range from 35 below to 112 F. LOL, let's see if you can handle THAT!
If you have something in common, then Norwegians like you. You will have something to talk about. Otherwise, it is awkward. I talk to my dad about weather and laugh at his great sense of humor. If I talk about anything serious, he gets very angry. He doesn't like to feel.
@@klmklm8570 My Dad's parents loved me and were so wonderful when I was little. My Dad did, too. Go figure, Norwegians are incredible with little children and animals.
I was 45 before my Dad said "You too", when I said "I love you, Dad". Dad: 100% Norwegian heritage, but if you ask him, he stares at me and says I am American. Yet, we pigged out on lutefisk, lefse and bollerkaka for Christmas Eve. This is a park for the foreigners. Nobody in my Norske/American life would be caught dead naked or posing. LOL!
Many young families in Oslo spend time there, it's very popular. One of my dearest friends emigrated from Norway in the early 70s as a young man. He always says "I was born in Norway" not "I am Norwegian". It is also almost impossible to get him to actually say "no" or "I don't like" as he was raised old school to be extremely polite and not offer personal opinions. He will occasionally do so around family and close friends but it's still extremely diplomatic
This was priceless! It explains a lot about why I am so silent at times. And also why I can dance well sitting down from the waist up, but can't dance at all standing. Lol
OMG! I just LOVE your videos. You are so funny. I love this video and I must say, the sculpture in that park is extremely bizarre. Especially that phallic pillar. WOW. I'm 71 and I have never seen any reference to it in my life....wonder why??? LOL
I understand perfectly. My son is in a Black Metal Band and dreams of moving to Norway. Ronald and Madds, you work so very well together. I hope you continue bringing videos into our dark, dreary lives for years to come. I know it is torture for you to carry on sometimes, but such is life. Keep posting and i'll try to not get too excited about it. I'm only gonna ever say this once, get ready, here it is......I love you guys. Now get back to work.
Hi guys, Happy New Year to you!! When I worked in a book store a few years ago, we often used have a Norwegian man come into browse round the books in his lunch break. He was in England on a 3 year apprenticeship. He was a very shy but extraordinarily polite and friendly man but showed very little emotion. He never engaged in ‘small talk’ with any of the staff. On his last day he kept attempting to walk up to the checkout but would then back away. It was only when later we were tidying up the store to close for the day that we found a large bag with a package in. It was labelled To all the girls in The Works...many thanks for your kindness, from Aksel’. Inside the package was a massive box of chocolates that would have cost him about £60.00!! It was so very kind of him, but we think he was way too shy and reserved to give it to us himself!! It’s so true how you Norwegians are so unemotional, I find it quite endearing but also hilarious.😂❤️
I am just now learning about this park from this video. I looked it up and the article said it is supposed to be the journey of mankind from cradle to grave. It is all done by one artist. The monolith is supposed to be humans clamoring toward heaven, although I can see the cruder, lewder, grotesque aspects of it in the placement of some of the figures when you got closer to it. In fact, my initial reaction to the park was one of surprise: that there were so many people out walking in that park on a somewhat cold winter day with snow on the ground. (Many Americans tend to hibernate in winter and only go out to go to work or to get groceries.) So kudos for getting exercise outdoors in winter. My next surprise had to do with all the families wheeling baby carriages and walking with children of all ages through the erotic statues, without looking at the art or giving it a second thought. It is said that we are very prudish here in America. Nadine Strosson wrote a whole essay on the sex panic we have here in America where she lists all the pictures and statues involving nudity that had to be taken down, even those that had nothing to do with the erotic, for example, a mural of Columbus discovering America with bare-breasted native women, or a poster in an AIDS clinic promoting safe condom use. They must feel the same in Australia. One Australian woman cautioned in her review of the park, not to feel ashamed; she assured everyone that it is art. (Funny.) Looking at it, I can see allusions to myths like Medusa: the one woman statue holds up her very snake-like hair, and Romulus and Remus: the mother bent over her children looks like the she-wolf suckling the baby founders of Rome. And so on. How do we express love here in America? We idealize it; we present it at its best in the movies, in the best of our romantic comedies like Kate and Leopold, Stranger than Fiction, When Harry Met Sally, etc. This is both good and bad. These movies show the essence of life and love, what it should be, but then too many people get disappointed because the reality doesn't live up to the fantasy. And we are not as glib at throwing the word love around as you and others have suggested. Some of us are, but many of us know the wisdom of Cordelia's words in King Lear: "Love and be silent." These are the thoughts your video and question evoked.
Love everyrhing you write. Your reflections are so interesting. Thanks a lot taking time and effort sharing your story with us and for being awesome. You add so much to this story
Jan96106 You are very insightful and your analysis as a fellow American is very true. Yet we remain optimistic about love. It must go along with our standard: "Have a nice day". "We use the word 'awesome' a lot." "Hey, Good to see you." "Dude! That rocks!" Come to think of it, we are quite expressive and outspoken in this country. I once asked a lady from Perth Australia her first impression of Americans. She said: "You people are loud in restaurants! Everyone talks to each other." 😀
S D If you have heterosexual teenagers and young adults in your family - the focus is very much on the opposite sex and love. We are still human and basic human behavior and biology has not been bred out of us. For older individuals - yes, I agree that many have become jaded.
S D I never mentioned any movies. Don't know what you are talking about. Your description, however, sounds like "Outlander" which I thought was pretty graphic and absolutely not for any children to view. It was more of a graphic adult fairytale.
A very interesting video - it truly explains so much to me. My father was Norwegian, but died when I was a youngster. Consequently, I was raised without a full understanding of being Norwegian as, my mother was not Norwegian and we lived apart from the culture. When I was an older teen I was exposed to my Norwegian roots and this video explains so much about this Northern European culture. I thought I was the only one who danced from my hips up! I need to show this to my fellow non-Norwegian Scandinavian friends so they can laugh with me. Thank you.
Nothing wrong with how Norwegians express their love. Just because people see overt displays of affection in romantic Hollywood films and TV they think they can act it out in real life but I find it can be a bit fake. Having said that, I really want to visit Vigeland Park next time I'm in Oslo.
Regardless if you guys believe me or not, this is so relatable to my life, I swear (minus the carrying passion at 5:13)! Also, at the same time, perhaps my genetic test now explains very well why I have some types of behaviour (it turned out I have some clusters from Bergen area but also Sweden). And also why I love Norwegians so much, there is absolutely no point in hiding it at all, hehe! Thank you so much for making my Christmas so much better! Bra jobba! Dette var so fint, so klart! Beste hilsener fra Romania! P.S. I see love is truly private and intimate in Norway and I profoundly admire this! Sometimes it reminds me of Edvard Munch's 'The Scream'.
When I meet long married couples 30+ years, I sometimes ask the quiet one: "That's a long time to put up with somebody, isn't it?" they say "OH YES" and the chatterbox looks shocked then they both crack up 😆😆
Hey Guys!! So nice to see that you've been active during this crazy time! As I haven't received any notifications from your channel, I decided to take a peak to see if you had uploaded any new vlogs. So Norwegians have feelings? SHUT. THE. FRONT. DOOR. And is that park a kind of anti-metaphor for keeping your feelings wrapped up? The figures in this video don't look very "wrapped up" to me. 😳 Do Norwegians find it easier to get naked with someone rather than talk to them? 🤔
Thank-you for the fun and laughter. And for sharing your beautiful Norway with us. May not know if a Norwegian loves me, but I know two Norwegian guys I adore. godt nytt år Ronald! 😘🤗 godt nytt år Mads! 😘🤗 Hope this new year brings you both many good things. ❤
In Greece, in a relationship you can say ''I want you'', ''I like you'', but you should never say ''I LOVE YOU!'' We probably have Norwegian genes from Vikings
noooo. beauty in the vast 'empty' space, silences. away from the clutteredness. On other hand is like a place where you have to look for the signs hidden in plain sight, which you guys seem to really hone in on.
You are brilliant! I love the metaphors and how you see the world! This is only my second view of your videos, but it is clear to me the two of you will have me hooked! I personally love what you have shown~ a powerful expression in sometimes simple statements and form, and, to me, actually a more advanced way of communication! I'm from America, and sadly, someone could be beating me with a stick, but as long as they are saying, "I love you, it must be true! Thank you for this fascinating journey!
Hi Betsy :) You have very interesting, and for us, very cool reflections about our silent love life. Unfortunately someone can beat you with a stick here too, but you will not hear the love you part. Thanks for being awesome and nice to us and enginging with our channel. We appreciate it a lot. Cheers from Ronald & Mads :) :)
The angry kid is angry because many times his hands had to be replaced! He calmed down pretty quickly tho. 😄 Funny video because I can relate. Showed this video to my Norwegian husband and he laughed so hard. Happy 2020 Ronald and Mads! 🎉🎆
This is actually very similar to how I remember things in the rural Midwest US about 30 years ago. Men were stoic, and parents didn’t show emotions to each other (at least in front of the children), but there was a lot of evening banter. Moving to the city was a huge culture shock, everybody talks all the time and it sometimes feels like people are fake because I’m not used to the outward affections! People say “I love you” to friends they just met!
I don't think the English language has words equivalent to the Norwegian "Jeg elsker deg", which is usually translated as "I love you". The Norwegian term "å elske" expresses the deepest love, the one you cannot live without. The love that is unconditional, where you can do anything for another person. One of your best presentations of the "inner" space of Norwegian way of thinking in a specific area of the human condition. Thank You both! Keep up the good work!
I love all your videos and binged watched it all 😂 Learning a lot from your culture same time having a really good laugh. Love you, the cameraman and your humour 🤣
This is the best of your videos so far that I've seen. Hilarious, I ,a Norwegian American, actually laughed out loud and smiled broadly, sitting alone in my living room, of course.
I’m Swedish ancestry 🇸🇪. My friends tell me all the time ... “you’re a difficult man to get to know. You don’t speak too much but when you do, it’s always direct and in point.” I just smile 😉. I find Americans constantly have to make idle chatter and are not comfortable in silence.
Haha, so you are like that statue with his arms crossed? ;) Most Nordics probably have the same experience over there. I have it too, when I visit my family in Chile. Thanks for sharing and happy new year Robin!
YOURWAY2NORWAY ... Ronald/Mads ... I try to be conscious of my arms. If they are crossed, it sends a subliminal message that you are a closed person to the speaker. I usual just keep my hands at my sides when standing or on the arms of a chair when seated. Happy New Year.
I've never been in a romantic relationship with a Norwegian, but being raised in a Norwegian American family, I can relate a bit. Almost never any "I love you"s or hugs, but you still know you're loved. My husband's family is the complete opposite. Always hugging and kissing and saying "I love you." It took me quite a while to get used to. I was really uncomfortable at first.
same here, my spouse and his family are much more emotionally intelligent and easy going, it took several years to get used to that. I now make a point of hugging male colleagues or friends hello (that I know well) or tapping their arm if they are comfortable with it; many men do not receive affection often, particularly single men. They go from work to home and back again never feeling human touch. And touch is what keeps us alive.
That was actually hilarious guys! I really dont know if there is a line between the narration and the reality. It sounds too extreme to be all real. Once upon a time i wanted to fall in love in Norway.
I know better than to consume anything while watching your videos because it will end up being spit all over the screen ! Thank you! This is hysterical and informative at the same time! The park was shown to me by a coworker after he came back from a trip to Norway . I found it confusing to say the least and the giant penis with the people and kids crawling up it was particularly confusing when compared to anyone I had ever met from Norway .
There was a survey of married couples, who also owned dogs, in the USA a few years ago. The researchers asked who they liked better--their dog or their spouse. Most of the wives said they preferred the dog because it listened better. Most of the husbands said they preferred the dog because it doesn't talk :)
My god..... I don't know why youtube thought I need to see this, but trust me.... From the supermarket, to the lunch sandwich- SORRY, my bad.... matpakke to expressing feelings. I live with this, for 6 years now here in Ireland. And he, my Norwegian guy told me how people in Norway would never go shopping in Lidl or Aldi or any other supermarket apart from their usual. And he feels very superior to "them" since he does it here. All though he hasn't got a choice since we don't have a Norwegian market here in Ireland. But I would never dare to pint that out to him LOL. I just sneak "new food" in to the fridge sometimes and on the plate. So funny to watch. It's scary how true it is. Love it (sorry, won't say it again... Today). :-)

@@YOURWAY2NORWAY I don't think you're not that different to the Germans, just have much more sarcasm in you- which I like. He saw a lot from the world, so have I and I think that helps a lot. But in general I think it's a universal thing that people try to change their partners or don't accept them the way they are. We need to see the ugly sides of each one of us and accept it. If we can't, we need to move on. But your videos make me smile and I see so much similarity. You guys are very funny. I showed it to Øystein. His reaction was: "Right." LOL
The Monolith is actually a good symbolic way of showing the only way - except, maybe, for the Ikea shelves thing and generally paying the rent - many Norwegian men proclaim their love.
It's definitely a love or hate artwork ... to me it represents everyone having to get along in a crowded world. One of my dearest friends hated it, I felt so wounded ... have to accept everyone is different 🤣

Sooooo true. Although I'm born in Poland, I spend 15 years of my youth in Sweden (in a similar culture). Now my wife complains that I do not express my feelings. And really my throat is blocked when I try to say "I love you" (or 'te amo' since my wife is from Peru).
I believe if you're in love with someone then you don't have to say always that you love him/her! Your actions will show how much you care about them! So I appreciate their opinions!

Yes, I think the same. A lot of struggles. Thanks Joseph :)
@@YOURWAY2NORWAY You're very welcome. :D (12:53 - "I hate you", "I hate you too" lol)
What a story!! Thanks for adding so much to our content. Makes it much better :) :)
That's so sad ...
Sometimes, I feel like a rotten person, but I was only 20 and not experienced in relationships..my Norwegian was my only male experience and he never even kissed me on the cheek...he did hold my hand for approximately 5 minutes, 1 time in all those years...doesn't matter at this point

I still laugh about the sweaty cheese. . It’s hard to get to know Norwegians but when you do it’s a deep and true friendship. I hope the New Year brings you both wonderful things and lots more videos please!

Is it true that Norwegians feel annoyed or offended by talkative or " noisy " people?
How can you get to know what Norwegians think?
Kind of true. Easier to get to know someone you are working with or doing hobby with
If you have something in common, then Norwegians like you. You will have something to talk about. Otherwise, it is awkward. I talk to my dad about weather and laugh at his great sense of humor. If I talk about anything serious, he gets very angry. He doesn't like to feel.

@@barbramighall4518 Great description. If you could tell us more about Norwegian personalities...
LOL!
Love your sad and oh so Norwegian story about emotions. Thanks a lot for sharing and adding to our content! Cheers from Ronald and Mads :) :)
Lol
Haha, cool story & reflections. Thanks for sharing!
OMG! I just LOVE your videos. You are so funny. I love this video and I must say, the sculpture in that park is extremely bizarre. Especially that phallic pillar. WOW. I'm 71 and I have never seen any reference to it in my life....wonder why??? LOL
Haha, so bizarre 😜 Thanks a lot Mary!
From what other Norwegians have told me, this is true af. Btw, this honestly seems like my sort of relationship lol

Haha Barbara, you know your Black metal attitude & philosophy. Thanks for being awesome! We can only say DITTO to you 😘😘
Hi guys, Happy New Year to you!!
What a story!!! So sad and so typical Norwegian. Thanks for adding to our content and making it better. Happy New Year Judith :) :)
We visited Vigeland Park many years ago. It is HUGE. Thanks for doing a video here - enjoyed it very much. It brings back good memories.

@@YOURWAY2NORWAY thank you! Now y'all let me know when you are coming to New Orleans I will be a guide for you!
I even saw a Dog clamoring to heaven!🥰🥰🥰
A very interesting video - it truly explains so much to me. My father was Norwegian, but died when I was a youngster. Consequently, I was raised without a full understanding of being Norwegian as, my mother was not Norwegian and we lived apart from the culture. When I was an older teen I was exposed to my Norwegian roots and this video explains so much about this Northern European culture. I thought I was the only one who danced from my hips up! I need to show this to my fellow non-Norwegian Scandinavian friends so they can laugh with me. Thank you.
Hehe, very interesting & cool story Terry!! Thanks for sharing and adding to our content. Cheers from Ronald and Mads 🍻🍻
Nothing wrong with how Norwegians express their love. Just because people see overt displays of affection in romantic Hollywood films and TV they think they can act it out in real life but I find it can be a bit fake. Having said that, I really want to visit Vigeland Park next time I'm in Oslo.
Cool to hear. Thanks Veronica. Welcome to Oslo :)

Stay safe guys!!
So Norwegians have feelings? SHUT. THE. FRONT. DOOR. And is that park a kind of anti-metaphor for keeping your feelings wrapped up? The figures in this video don't look very "wrapped up" to me. 😳
Do Norwegians find it easier to get naked with someone rather than talk to them? 🤔
Haha, probably 😆😆😆 Our feelings are just like the statues. Scared & naked 😘
Pillage first, talk later! It's been like that since at least 793 😆

Remember you're not looking forward to... 😘
Very interesting to learn! Thanks a lot for sharing and adding to our content :) :)
I don't think the English language has words equivalent to the Norwegian "Jeg elsker deg", which is usually translated as "I love you". The Norwegian term "å elske" expresses the deepest love, the one you cannot live without. The love that is unconditional, where you can do anything for another person. We often use the term "Jeg er glad i deg" as a "less dangerous" alternative. It can be translated "I care about you", "I like you" or "I have feelings for you". As I have understood the English term "love", it corresponds better to the Norwegian term "glad i" or "like".
Outstanding Presentation! The Cultural differences and education about sexual relationships of Norwegians! Very educational & informative you guys. Bravo! One of your best presentations of the "inner" space of Norwegian way of thinking in a specific area of the human condition. Thank You both! Keep up the good work!

This is the best of your videos so far that I've seen. Hilarious, I ,a Norwegian American, actually laughed out loud and smiled broadly, sitting alone in my living room, of course.
Haha, that's cool to learn. Thanks!
That's why the two same-looking cultures, USA and Iran r on war now, and Scandinavia, always peace, always. lol
Love your Norwegian story from abroad. Thanks for sharing and adding to our content :)
same here, my spouse and his family are much more emotionally intelligent and easy going, it took several years to get used to that. I now make a point of hugging male colleagues or friends hello (that I know well) or tapping their arm if they are comfortable with it; many men do not receive affection often, particularly single men. They go from work to home and back again never feeling human touch. And touch is what keeps us alive.
Damm last time I was this early, actually, I've never been so early

The Monolith is actually a good symbolic way of showing the only way - except, maybe, for the Ikea shelves thing and generally paying the rent - many Norwegian men proclaim their love.
