I’d consider a “field watch” a watch intended/issued for military use or following common military design standards: printed black dial with white arabic numerals, 12 o'clock marker, lume, matte case, size well below 40 mm, fabric or leather strap, certainly no display back. Rather few of your featured watches match that definition.

The Orient Defender is one of my favorite watches in my collection. It's not expensive, very accurate and best of all fits very well on my wrist. I like it as much as I like my Hamilton Khaki!
Great video as always, the best field watches should include the insanely cheap SNK80* series or a Timex expedition scouts or field. Since to me field watches should be inexpensive since.. well things happen in the wilderness! Also another classification for field watches should include analog hands for a makeshift compass.
Citizen BM8180. I am about to add that to my collection. Though I love automatics, I also appreciate the ruggedness and accuracy of Quartz. And the Eco Drive will last for 10-15 years before needing a new capacitor.
I have an Orient Defender (grey dial/ leather strap). It’s one of my favorites, although I have a humble 16 watch collection. The Defender has an extremely unique complications and feels great on the stock leather band. The automatic rotor is a little noisy, but that’s the only thing I can find wrong with it. The finish isn’t brushed exactly, it looks blasted almost. Great fit and finish for the price, and a screw down crown. It’s kind of a field watch, but has elements of a pilot’s watch too.
The common line about military heritage and/or usefulness that you hear about ‘field’ watches isn’t as true as you’d think. Back in the 60s and 70s, before ruggedized digital watches existed and before Rolex became the ultra-luxe behemoth it is now, Army special forces were issued no-date Submariners. There’s also a history of steel diver watches (of several types) in the old Frogman units, but I’ll grant you that that one actually makes sense for the application. I don’t think ‘field’-type watches as you describe them have been popular in the NATO militaries in a long time. If anyone’s curious, my first service watch was one of the crap-tastic ‘AQUA FORCE’ things that they only sell at training PXs. As soon as I could I ditched it for a Timex, but the crown snapped off in the field. Then I tried a Hamilton Khaki, but it got slammed against a bulkhead and the date function broke. Finally bit the bullet and bought the Omega a while later, and that one survived.

TRUE! I love my Gshock and have absolutely no problems and/or concerns if/when I bang it up on a wall or any other structure, or jump in the ocean with it.
So true. I have a Bertucci AS-2 that would put any mech watch to shame for ruggedness. I also have a G Shock GD-350 which has such great functionality. I'd be afraid to take a mechanical watch hiking or camping as it'l liable to get hit or dropped and then quit working, and I hate not having a watch in the wilds.
In real life, yes, you are on it.. I use an older Casio ProTrek solar titanium for climbing, hiking, biking. It's a bit bulky but very tough and has survived a lot of bashing and crashing. And has compass, atm pressure, altimeter functions, etc. But for easy days, hard to beat the Hamilton Khaki to wear to work and then walk the dog.
I, in fact, do own an Orient Defender. When I first got, I was immediately drawn to the various sub-dials that tell the day of the week & 24hr. It doesn't hack, unfortunately. Also the movement rattles around a little bit. I only now wear it occasionally, but I enjoy looking at when I do and the leather strap is good enough on it. Worth a try.
I love my black version SNZG17. It's a field watch crossed with a flieger A-type dial. Lume on the BOTH index markers and the numbers. Perfect combination.
Don't forget the Seiko SNZG17K1 100 meters water resistant. It's a great watch. I just love mine. Plus for around $150.00 it's great value for the money.

Sir- You are outstanding in your field! Joking aside, To me the quintessential field watch is the hamilton khaki. Everything else is just a variation of it. If you had to define what a field watch is, Id say it should be smallish (38mm) Have a rugged low profile case with a crown guard, at least 50m water resistance, Simple and bold numerals with 12/24 hour markings and simple and easy to read indices. All with good lume and a sweeping second hand.
Can’t go wrong with my Seiko SNZG15K1 , not hackable or hand-windable but it runs at +0.5 spd and it’s being doing that since I put it on in 2018! Highly recommended👍👍
I own the Boldr Venture, Orient Defender, and a Hamilton Khaki. All definitely deserve to be on this list. Only thing the Defender is lacking is hacking and sapphire, otherwise it’s a great watch!
Choices of field watches are huge. Two relatively new companies making GREAT and well priced field watches are Bertucci and Vaer. Then there is Timex, Casios (G-shocks), citizen, Vostok, Marathon, .... so many others. Maybe even more choices than dive watches!
My favorite field watch is the Tudor North Flag, and I prefer it to my Explorer when out in the wild. It’s sleek, modern and unlike anything else in the current Rolex/Tudor catalogue. I’ve heard Jory praise the North Flag in prior videos and am surprised he left it out of his list. I think Jory should review the NF soon.
I own an Orient Defender with the cream colored dial, and I have to say it is an amazing watch for the money and it looks so great. It can easily be worn with a suit and tie if you put a leather strap on it and can easily be dressed down with a nato strap. The quality is good and it actually has a screw down crown so I am not afraid to get it wet. I would highly recommend it!
My grail field watch would be - CWC g10 - Hamilton Khaki field watch Both of them have a heritage and beauty of classic. But for now might gonna pickup Boldr venture due to tight budget😅.
Great video! Field watches are right up there for me after deck/navy watches. The Orient Defender was my first mechanical watch and for that reason holds a special place in my heart, so it was neat to hear it mentioned. It is 42mm but wears so comfortably and the size helps you read the day and 24hr complications easily. Just a solid watch all around and mine has been extremely accurate. Just wish it hand wound because with the day complication I tend to keep it on a winder. As a daily wearer it would be great. Slips under a cuff too with the flat crystal. I have all kinds of pics of the Defender @halfpastblog since I have a small collection to photograph, if that interests anyone. 👍
All good choices. My choice for a field watch is a Lum-Tec Combat B. They have a variety of choices. All are 100 meters WR. Mine is the Combat B 41 24 hrs. It has a 24 hour dial. You should definitely check them out!
Field watches are my favorite. I got 3 and half out of 5, I also don't have the Orient Defender and I have an Explorer, not the Explorer II. I also just ordered the Boldr Venture yesterday.
Out of these two watches, what one would be more rugged and would be used for camping, hiking, swimming, skiing, office, dress, for everything basically. Rolex explorer 1 (39mm) or omega railmaster (40mm)? Many thanks
Jordi, I realy love your excitement and pure joy when you talk about the Seiko Alpinist SARB017. In fact, you introduced me to this particular model and I really wanted to have one and some days ago I pulled the trigger on a local watch forum listing of a guy selling one in a good condition. It is really adorable, especially with some natos in rotation. Also, I love your channel and watch every episode. You got the same interests as me: the outdoors, retro gaming and cars, could be nice to hang out (but I live in Europe :D ). Keep up the good work, buddy. Cheers!
I’ve owned the Defender now for a year and it’s a great watch. Purchased it from Long Island Watches, it’s on sale at the moment at a bargain price. I have the black dial and paired it with a black NATO which makes it pop. Though the leather strap it comes with is of good quality anyway. I get lots of positive comments about the Defender. It comes in decent dial colour choices too. Black/blue/grey and cream. And also on a bracelet if you prefer the all steel look for an extra 10 bucks. Definitely recommend you pick one up as they’re really affordable.
During WW2 the field watch was also used by pilots. There was no aviator's watch per se. Hamilton was the prolific brand for these back then. In Germany, the flieger or flyer's watch was issued to flyers as a purpose built instrument. At 55mm, it wad worn on the outer sleeve of the pilot's jacket and removed after flight.
You forgot the SNK809. Ok, maybe it would be the 6th watch to mention. The 809 is perfect for someone's 1st mechanical or 1st field watch if they did not want to spend a lot of money.
Another great video Jory! Check out the Marathon GSAR. It’s a field/dive watch combo. Extremely rugged, extremely tough, they are true mil-spec and made specifically for government and military use. When you get your PO Box up I can lend you mine for review.
Or the fantastic gen purpose inox. I have the gsar and the mechanical inox and like them both. When you try tritium lume it's hard to go back to anything else.
Love my Orient Defender and I get a lot of compliments when I sport it. Only issue I have is, no quick set for days but you can adjust the date. So, if you have the watch sitting for some time, be prepared to turn the crown a lot.
Doesn't hack. Therefore I guess it doesn't qualify. More of a pilot's style watch really. Jody extols it as a fantastic budget automatic so I'm sure he would have included if it qualified.
@@kennyduarte783 Yes, I've got one too. I find it a bit small but superb build quality for the price. Ps better quality and value than a Daniel Wellington!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the islander automatic field watch. From Long Island watches. Newer small brand but it’s basically a budget Hamilton khaki. Considering as a first everyday watch.
Most important essential features are 1. hacking movement for “Gun Time”. 2. Non-Reflective dial/front typically black, otherwise you will be victim of 1-2-3....ROFL....Bonus....compass...
Sick video, i love the aesthetics of field watches. I think no one on this list would beat the Damasko DS30 in robustness. Would really love to own it ond day.
I wore my Rolex GMT as an Army Officer, Paratrooper, Ranger overseas. In those days they were not a status symbol. They held up well to helicopter vibration.- been wearing mine since '67. Still do.
orient Neo 70s Panda dial is the iconic and legendary filed watch comes with chronograph, 24 hour function, 100m water resistance and a date complication. its a true field watch and i was shocked that you dont know about it
I just purchased a GPW field watch from GPW. Great design, a homage to the Explorer. Titanium NH35 Seiko movement. Sapphire crystal. Great inexpensive watch. Screw down crown sold me.
There’s no shortage of great field watches out there, but I’m gonna give a shout out to a watch I picked up recently and been wearing it ever since. The H Goose Saluda is a great piece and hold up very well in the field.
Armourlite Caliber Series AL1213. Automatic, carbon fiber reinforced poly-carbonate case, with sapphire crystal and 200m water resistant, and T100 tritium gas markers. I wear mine nearly everyday and it is damn near indestructible yet also a great watch for everyday use.
The best field watches are dive watches because they are robust, high water resistance and the bezel has multiple functions which can be used as a dual time, as a compass and a 60 minute chronograph timer. Even better than actual field watches themselves.
I've got the SARB017, fantastic watch, practicality and beauty perfectly blended. I picked up a SARW019 last week which is a great field watch, arabic numerals, date and day dials, as well as a power reserve meter, sunburst stone grey dial that shifts from grey to brown in certain lights, just a really well put together design.
I own the Hamilton 42mm and the Orient Defender.Orient Defender is a great watch, but seems a bit heavy and thick to be a true practical field.Think of it as a Dress Field Watch.
Looking for insight here. I'm thinking about saving up a little for the Hamilton Khaki Field (I'm not a watch collector, TBH, I currently own the Seiko SNN241 Chronograph ― which I really love ― and that's it) but I have a slight bone to pick with the HKF, which is that its only 50 meters water resistant. I find it kinda underwhelming that such an iconic watch field isn't recommended for recreational swimming. I love the outdoors and I'd hate to pay 500-ish dollars for a watch that I'd be afraid to bring with me if I have to cross water currents or wtv. Am I being overly cautious or would a dive in the river really screw up the watch?
Just ran across this video. Good list. I have an Orient Defender, and can tell you that it is a great field watch. One important feature you didn't mention is the screw down crown. Two watches I think should be on a list of great field watches are the Citizen Chandler BM8180-03E, and the Seiko SNK809.
I like the Seiko solar SNE095P2. It is the most legible watch I own. Black dial, huge white numbers and hands. Subtle hints of dive (bezel markings), aviator (delta wing on seconds hand), and dress (polished silver case) watches. Solar feels appropriate for an outdoor watch.
The grey dial Orient Defender was my first automatic watch after years of naively buying low quality fashion watches and being consistently disappointed by how fast they fell apart. It started my watch collection and was my daily wear for several months. Looked awesome dressed down on a khaki NATO, looked awesome dressed up on a reddish brown Hirsch leather band. I’m wearing the blue Mako 2 now just because I always sort of wanted a blue dial watch, but the Defender will always be special to me. I may go back to it one day...
Hi Jory, 2 more suggestions for field watches: lower budget: Citizen Chandler ecodrive BM8471-01E, good solid watch, precise movement, light for its size...2nd one would be more of an oddball since it is on a SS bracelet but does the job... Seiko SKA721P1 kinetic, again plain legible face, a lot more accurate than my Hamilton and rugged. And of course, when I operate a steam engine, Hamilton 992b RR pocket watch, but this is another ball game.. Cheers, Richard D
I have a love/hate relationship with the Orient Defender. It doesn't have hacking and, while you can easily set the date, you can't easily set the day subdial. If it's the only watch in your collection or you keep it in a winder that won't be an issue, but it's pretty frustrating otherwise
I think the Timex Expedition should be on this list. Durable, long lasting, handy Indiglo feature, and probably the most widely owned field watch for the last 30ish years.
I’ve recommended the Tudor North Flag as a great field watch, and we know that the North Flag is the only current Tudor that Jory likes. (I listen carefully Jory). I agree with Jory. The Time Teller rules and I didn’t buy my North Flag until the Time Teller approved! (Mild laughter and major self deprecation). Let me suggest another great field watch which is inexpensive and a great “beater watch.” My recommendation for a classy inexpensive “beater” is the Christopher Ward C65 khaki dial. I bought it on discount for less than $700 and it’s a well made and beautiful watch for the money. It’s my first and only Christopher Ward watch to date and it may be my last, but it’s a great looking watch on the wrist and great value. Wish I could lend you my North Flag and CW 65 to review Jory but I live and work in Shanghai and customs is a bitch. But I love my Chinese wife and hope that some other dude will take a Chinese wife to love happily ever after. (Hint hint) Keep up the good work Jory!
I have been thinking of the defender, but am put off by the 42mm, I feel that is just too large for a watch without a bezel, would buy it in a shot if smaller.
Field watches are the best and this video was excellent. Your selections are awesome, Good Sir. I love the Bertucci A-2TR Vintage GMT field watch with the Horween Leather band. Nope, don't care that it's a quartz. Excellent video again, Sir.
Just recently acquired Orient Defender. I love it. I got creme dial. Purchased fro Long Island. Very comfortable strap and I really like 24 hour complication.
That cream dial is gorgeous. I have the black dial with bracelet but no hacking and winding sure diminishes the enjoyment. Hope that Orient upgrades it. Beautiful cream dial for sure.
@@rtcurtis5858 agreed on winding . I'm not crazy about crown either. I have a hard time with it and wish it was signed. But for $129 bucks I'm very happy.
The Orients problems are with its old movement. No quick set for the complications so lots of works to set the time after it runs down.. Also no hacking or winding. You either need to rock it backwards and forwards or wind through a week's worth of days to set the dials. Another thing is that it's Lume is very poor.
Ah, but the gen 3 sun and moon added hacking, hand winding, and quick set for both day and date. I can’t speak to the Defender since I don’t own it, but Orient has been upgrading the movement in some of their other watches.
I have a Hamilton khaki field automatic and love it . But. When I travel or do any outdoor stuff I wear my Timex quartz Expedition . It runs great and the don't have to worry about it . It has been to the Amazon jungle !
My personal favourite field watch? Long Island watches isl-43...by a country mile, you need to do a review of it, because it punches WAY above its weight!!
I have a couple vintage H Moser watches that are field watches and a favre leuba Sea King. All are mechanical and very similar in style. Watches remind me of a more simple time
Thank you for this. However, do consider the Ricardo Swiss Alpine Military watch. Oddly, it's never considered in videos on field watches. (Ricardo have made some expensive vintage watches too). This Ricardo should be a Classic with its superb 12/24 hour luminous cream face and Quartz (Japanese) movement. I prefer it to my Timex Expedition Camper. And, surprisingly, it costs less than £30. Excellent value for a wonderful watch.
I bought the Boldr Expedition Fuji, but ended returning it. I have a Garmin for running and use this when in the 'field', hiking or any general exercise, so just don't think I need a field watch. Plus, I think the Fuji is the worst looking of the Expedition range.
My field watches consist of: Casio Protrek Casio Pathfinder Garmin Tactix I've had 2 GShocks break on me in the military doing my job. I think they're trash personally when it comes to relying on them with your life. Those top 3 are my go to!
I have one of Citizen's first eco drive watches. 0870-H17516 TA Citizen eco drive Titanium WR100m. Bought it almost 20 years ago for £200. Used it for 10 yrs and then it stopped. Thought it was probably a worn out power storage cell. Took it to one of the best watch maker/repairers in London, a very good friend who I happend to go to school with, over 40 yrs ago. Replaced the storage cell and it ran for about a month then stopped again. That's when we realised it was a capacitor problem and that the watch was not charging. Tried to source the part from Citizen, only to hear they didn't make that particular model part anymore and had none at all in stock. So basically the watch was unrepairable! It taught me one thing though. Never, ever, would I buy another eco/solar powered watch ever again. Especially from Citizen. I have stuck with automatic ever since and always will.
Hello Jory, love your show! I am seriously thinking about getting the Casio Mudmaster this year, in part because I want an analog G-SHOCK, but also specifically for robust outdoor use. I don’t know if this counts as a “field watch,” given that it doesn’t match the style of classic watches like the Hamilton or the Alpinist. Regardless, the heart wants what it wants...
For years my “collection” consisted of a $10 field watch and a $100 g-shock. They lasted me through basic training, field training exercises, deployments. I love them both
I have a Hamilton but honestly nothing will ever beat a G-Shock for a functional field watch.
I'm right there with you. I still have the same one from my time in service.

Many thanks
You forgot one of the toughest classic field watches around, the G shock DW-5600 E!!
tom krajcik absolutely, I think any g shock can be considered a great field watch.
I would have argued with you until I bought a GW5610 saying "pfff, dial watches are better field watches" but this Gshock really is a must buy!
I love my timex expedition scout
I have a Hamilton khaki field automatic but I use my Timex expedition when good camping or travel.
I've liked field watches since 1989 when a purchased my swiss army original. It still works.
You forgot the SNK809. Ok, maybe it would be the 6th watch to mention. The 809 is perfect for someone's 1st mechanical or 1st field watch if they did not want to spend a lot of money.
C. W. Yup, my first real watch.
I've owned the Orient Defender II for many months. It's one of my all time favorites. It meets all of my requirements. I also own an Orient Bambino.
Orient Defender is absolute dope, especially the Defender 2...
Love my Orient Defender and I get a lot of compliments when I sport it. Only issue I have is, no quick set for days but you can adjust the date. So, if you have the watch sitting for some time, be prepared to turn the crown a lot.
What kind of strap do you have on the seiko alpinist? It looks amazing.
Just got a boldr venture a few days ago I absolutely love it so far I think the only watch is upgrade to is the Hamilton khaki titanium Auto
Dear Sir
I appreciate your love for Field watches.
Have you reviewed flieger watches?
Where's the Seiko snk809 ???
Doesn't hack. Therefore I guess it doesn't qualify. More of a pilot's style watch really. Jody extols it as a fantastic budget automatic so I'm sure he would have included if it qualified.
It’s a good watch. It was my first real watch after my fashion watch and Apple Watch phase.
@@kennyduarte783 Yes, I've got one too. I find it a bit small but superb build quality for the price. Ps better quality and value than a Daniel Wellington!
Not really a field watch. Sorry
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the islander automatic field watch. From Long Island watches. Newer small brand but it’s basically a budget Hamilton khaki. Considering as a first everyday watch.
Three field watches in my small collection are the Lorus Lumibrite, Lorus Titanium and CWC G10
Also how about Stowa? Love their design and functionality
I wore my Rolex GMT as an Army Officer, Paratrooper, Ranger overseas. In those days they were not a status symbol. They held up well to helicopter vibration.- been wearing mine since '67. Still do.
Timex MK-1, Seiko 5 Sport and certainly Vostok Komandirskie! All my Field watch!
orient Neo 70s Panda dial is the iconic and legendary filed watch comes with chronograph, 24 hour function, 100m water resistance and a date complication. its a true field watch and i was shocked that you dont know about it
I just purchased a GPW field watch from GPW. Great design, a homage to the Explorer. Titanium NH35 Seiko movement. Sapphire crystal. Great inexpensive watch. Screw down crown sold me.
SInn 656, Victorinox INOX
I've had an alba aqpj402 (on a bracelet). Just wanted a field watch on a bracelet. Loving it so far 👍
CWC G10 from Silverman's is, in my opinion, the best value watch of its kind. Fixed lugs, battery hatch, accurate.
The Orient Defender is a fantastic watch. The only thing I think lets it down is lack of sapphire.
Christopher Bluma yeah the date is quick set but not the day. Odd. I still love mine though.
The best field watches are dive watches because they are robust, high water resistance and the bezel has multiple functions which can be used as a dual time, as a compass and a 60 minute chronograph timer. Even better than actual field watches themselves.
What do you think of the Borealis Adraga? Is it a good field watch .
I got the Defender about 6-months ago, I love it. It doubles as a dress watch and a field watch.
I have a bertucci field watch and I love it.
Going to the field to talk about the field watch. This is amazing content Jory
While it doesn't have the same status as some of the other watches, I love my LL Bean Swiss field watch.
Best field watch for me: Hamilton khaki field king auto 40 mm. It was my first automatic watch and its absolutely adorable
Field watches are the best and this video was excellent. Your selections are awesome, Good Sir. I love the Bertucci A-2TR Vintage GMT field watch with the Horween Leather band. Nope, don't care that it's a quartz. Excellent video again, Sir.
what do you guys think about the seiko SNKN27K1
@@valjean3141 no version 2 Defender.
I am wearing mine right now.
Timex mil-spec field watch a.k.a the MacGyver watch is my all time fav
I have the Seiko SNX431K, not the most accurate watch but it's durable, it has being my EDC for almost 13 years.
Before you said it I knew it was Hamilton khaki. You sure do love it.
I'm with you on the Hammy and Alpy, my two fave daily drivers.
Seiko Alpinist for sure, but Hamilton Khaki is more of a true field watch. Great video!
My field watches consist of:
Casio Protrek
Casio Pathfinder
Garmin Tactix
I've had 2 GShocks break on me in the military doing my job. I think they're trash personally when it comes to relying on them with your life. Those top 3 are my go to!
Citizen eco drive aw0050-21a is a great field watch!
McKnight Baron I have the ATO500 05E or the chandler and my eco drive is great
BN0118-04E is my new fav. And used and abused by Bushmaster Ray Mears. I don't wear mechanicals in the field anymore.
I know you finally got it?
