The Puppy Stage With Brookstone Kennels Performance Gundogs - Hunting Dog Training

  • Hunting dog training starts early and even if you're dog is too young to retrieve, there's still plenty of training you can do. At this stage, it's about exploring and beginning to introduce concepts that will be used down the road. Exploration walks and hunt games help puppies begin to develop and learn the skills required to become a hunting dog.

    I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide th-cam.com/users/postUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff ... But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!

    I just got my Black pup here in Maine 3 days ago, 8 wks 1 day. He flew in from Southern Ut. Dad is a FC and mom is JH. My dad ran trials my whole life and we always had 3 black dogs my entire life. I am nervous to start but "Lido" is doing well in the first few days. Its -9 out tonight so house training is interesting but he will be ready for Ducks in December with these temps.....Great video, thank you for the information.

    Great videos I have been watching now for a few days, I have a pure breed black hunting lab his parents and grand parents were all champions here in Ireland. Unfortunately I didn't get the time to train him when he was younger but now circumstances have changed and I have been doing bits with him. Do you think at 4 he's to old? He certainly has all the traits of a top hunting lab would that be his lineage?

    My question: if your current dog is male (just at 12 months old), do you pick a female as the second dog, or can you go with a male if say, you find a litter that has a pup you like that happens to be male. I'm wondering if training and working potential gets influenced by the presence of multiple labs in the same home when it's not set up like a kennel arrangement. The dogs would interact quite freely for the most part. I'm wondering if getting a second male will create some rivalry with the first one. That could be a good thing, not sure. I know with German Shepherds, they tend to get possessive of their person, and having two GSDs can create quite the competitive dynamics among two or more dogs in the same home that want to claim the human's attention. But that's GSD's. With Labs, I'm thinking they're a bit more relaxed on resource guarding and far more socially cooperative. I'm game to try to train two at once. The lab I have now is insanely responsive, and motivated to take direction. Very easy to train. The retrieving part is up to the dog's aptitude. I teach the handling part of the game.
    My reason for getting the second dog is that there's a litter of pups from two parents I'd really not like to pass up. I've been waiting for a pup from this pair for quite awhile. Otherwise, I wouldn't get another pup at all right now. Away from any training, my male lab tends to like other female dogs far more than other males (probably no surprise since he's intact, lol, but even females aren't that much of a distraction for him with regards to training). He's nearly indifferent to other males, or he plays with them a bit, but could care less. He lives to train. I mean think intense obsessive drive that needs training as an outlet. That's him. He is a field bred lab that reminds me more of a Malinois on his drive tendencies, except there's no Mal like aggression. He is a hard charging aggressive retriever, though. That is for sure.

    Hey there ! loving these videos. thinking about buying a lab this week the pups are 8 weeks old. do you have more videos on what to do with pups this young ? can you tell me what steps to train a puppie? i see in this vid you say you do these explorations for about 7 months or so. but what else do you do in those months ? also the winter is coming fast. should i do these exploration walks with a small pup in the snow, cold, etc ? when should i introduce this pup to gun fire , water , and the hard core elements. i know this is a lot but if you can help answer some questions then please do. my family loves your channel !!

      Eric Maybe, depending on breeding and some other factors. I took a 7 year old Lab from my mother in law. No hunt background, so-so breeding. The dog never became great but we killed some pheasants and had a hell of a lot of fun.

    is it okay to yell at my dog as a pup. what’s a good punishment when they do a bad action. like biting.

    • @LAWL95
      @LAWL95 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      After plenty of research after getting a new puppy myself, you must be consistent! Reward good behavior, and immediately. Be firm with negative behavior and also react immediately! But yelling at your puppy or worse, hitting them is not effective and can develop into an even worse behavior. Stick with a single phrase "no". If you don't want your dog on the couch, NEVER let your dog on the couch, if you want them to sit before feeding them, always have them sit!
      If your pup is biting (and they do.... a lot...and we aren't even teething yet) redirect your pup to chew on a toy! Say no and as soon as they let go praise. If it bites you hard during play get up and ignore them, they'll learn that biting hard = no more play. I've learned to not let my puppy get too worked up anymore, it seemed like setting her up for failure if she became too excited she wouldn't listen anymore. Mine is a fast learner, but if your pup gets worked up easily and has a little aggression you may need to look into crate training.
      Remember your puppy is just a baby still, they perform best on a schedule and consistency just like human babies. then work on varying up the routine, that way they learn the actual behavior not just the pattern

      I'm not sure if it will help but a dog whistle might get him to stop and listen to u. working him in the yard with a long check cord use a toy throw it and when he takes off to get it blow the whistle and stop him with the cord work on it for a few days he should start to stop on his own when he does that take him on walks some where other than the yard and still use your toy just random throw the toy and stop him with the whistle. when u throw the toy and stop him never let him get the toy use a different toy for him to retrieve. i hope this helps

    • @migratorygame7400

      @@LincolnTheLabrador the whistle means sit. I start out with the dog just standing in front of me blow the whistle and then say sit once they do it with out u saying sit then walk with them on a led and random blow the whistle they should stop and sit sometimes u gotta tell them to sit once they do good with that throw a bumper when the dog is on their way back blow the whistle and say sit they should stop and sit but it can take s few times for the dog to fully understand. i think I woukd use a dog whistle when getting on to them for chasing other animals and a regalor whistle to start the whistle training for blind retrieves. how old is the dog
