Mate this was a massive help to me!! I have sold my gaff and moving into van-life! Broke up with my Missis after 11 years which has really kicked me hard but maybe this could be the best thing for me. Top video James …. Smithy
Thanks Smithy, hope things work out for you, Im sure they will mate
@@bythecurb thanks mate 🙏
Some great tips in this video (and some fantastic mini-tips too). Here are the main ten:
1. Rent storage space or lockup or small office. Have your mail sent there.
2. Don't store food in your van. Use supermarkets daily and take advantage of their special offers
3. Rotate your park-ups.
4. Arrive late, leave early [stealth mode]
5. Wash at the gym
6. Be prepared to change things...
7. Get the right sized van.
8. Maintain your vehicle.
9. Staying warm - choose correct clothing/bedstuff/heating aids.
10. Enjoy your freedom.
This channel just keeps getting better. The intro, the comic music is very old school, very real and truthful content. Love it! All the best James ❤
Thank you, I appreciate that :-)
Ive done years of stealth vanlife
Thoroughly enjoyed it with no big issues as regards other people unless as you say avoid frequenting the same spots .
Wish you well .
Hi mate. I totally recommend Dave’s garage: Barnsley Road Garage & Tyres Goldthorpe. 8 miles from Barnsley and close to Aldi in Goldthorpe. Cheap, honest and professional.
Thanks for the tip
You have come so far James since i watched you pack up the house and convert your van into a home. Life is what you make it and you're doin no bad 👌hope you get the bearings sorted soon, wish i could help but my pension doesn't stretch that far. Loved the editing and the music...keep on loving life 😊
Thank you Sandra
Geez I can’t believe it’s been that long already James , watched you from the beginning and loved all your contents and of course Helen , what your doing works don’t change 😊
Thank you
I have lived in my van a LWB Merc Sprinter for about 5 years. Your 10 points are very good I don't think I could add to them. Well perhaps leaving a park up as you found it are even tidier.
Decent batteries and a way to charge them. The best van you can afford and size does matter.
Have some good knowledge about the vehicle you have, it works out cheaper when it comes to servicing and repairs.
But well put for a newcomer to van life.😄
Thanks mate
Enjoyed that video fair play. Good simple advice . Cheers Curby
I came back checking on the channel and I'm so glad you're still doing this! I'm cheering for you!
That was a kickass intro btw!
Thanks so much!!
Thankyou James for another great post. You can’t beat experience can you … wanting to do something very different in your
life and taking that big step, thinking things out & then preparing and bingo !! before you know it you’re an old hand with
27k subscribers. I wish you continued success and a bigger van for you & Helen. A super big van for a super big guy 💕💕.
Thank you so much 😊
New intro now we are reaching new heights :) And your editing skills are getting impressive fella you will soon reap the fruits of your labor! Had to update message when seen your little girl singing had me chuckling poo poo head :)
really enjoy your videos mate good honest content, i have a diesel heater in my garage running through a 240/12v transformer works well and easy to fit ,go for it
Absolutely love this
My particular favourite was “Store you food in the Supermarket” brilliant
Re Diesel Heater - honestly the best thing I added to my T4 was an Eberspacher. Made sure I filled one in the Bananavan. Even if you go cheap Chinese copy you’ll find it’s an absolute game changer and it’ll make your Van more saleable when you come to move it on
Cheer's James thank's for your Blogs. Love watching and listening to you and Helen. And places you guys go.
Our pleasure!
Great intro, full marks for the professional directing of content. ( oh it's you James, well done, great.... love it)!
Thank you
Good it has worked out well for you, subscribers increasing steadily long may it continue, all the best 😊
Thank you so much 🙂
i am a member of that gym James, and it totally boils my piss when I see these mostly young people sitting on a machine looking at their smart phone when I want to use it! It's no use trying to reason with them about it either because they are oblivious to being shamed about what they are doing. I blame the parents!
Entertaining channel !
Oh! by the way I use Crows garage which is next to the petrol station at Pogmoor. They are really good and trustworthy.
Thanks for the tip, I'll look them up
Just subscribed to you're channel and binge watched all last night 🥰 really love you two and you're so down to earth ,best channel on you tube ❤❤
Thank you and thanks for the sub
Yep, those are all the good tips to follow for "van life". I like having a storage unit for when I need to take the van in to be worked on. I take the valuables out and put them in the unit just so they don't go into the hands of someone who might be tempted to take them. Love your daughter, sounds like she's into music like you. 🚐👨👧🎤🎶
Haha yes she is, she likes to write her own songs but they are always about James poo! 😂
Enjoyed this, the tip about the doggy paddling pool, with the pop up picture had me rolling 😂
These are some top tips, Urban Van life sometimes feels easier as no one bats an eye lid at a work van
Service plus garage is decent near where the old baths were love the content...
Thanks will take a look
Loved loved loved the intro 👍👍☺️
That was hilarious, well the music and comedy intros 😂 brilliant.
I have literally changed my bed height 3 times in my until I got it right. It's now perfect 👌 and still have loads of space underneath in my pull out baskets, flatish type but wide and 2ft deep so everything gets stored that I need to be.
I built a thing lol over my wheel arch literally a inch around the arch but it goes up on a slope and the top of it is a table and storage. But importantly I've not lost any floor space.
Great tips James.
Thank you Jane
Great video as always James 👏🏼
Very good again James, straight direct advice, very good tips.
Thank you
awesome vlog James, and one day when the time is right, and when I can afford it, i will get a van and live the dream, great tips buddy and looking forward to seeing your next vlog, see the :) Alec
Thanks Alec
Another video full of top tips 👍👍
I predict you will end up with your own TV show James, you heard it here first.!
Brilliant x great tips x have lovely time with yr gorgeous daughter ❤
great tips x your daughter sounds adorable x
Fantastic vlog again James 😁
Thanks 👍
Hi ya James good points i noticed some of are local places round Barnsley hope you had a lovely weekend with your Daughter keep up the fantastic work you are a dream to watch hope you get your van sorted out soon take care love 🙋♀️👋👍👍👍
Thank you Julie
Eyup James, I've just had a clutch done at Lineside garage on the edge of Hoyland, done good job at a better price than some quoted. Never used him before but several locals advised me to go there, shunt be much for a Pug wheel bearing, best of luck.
Thanks mate, I'll look them up
I've never lived in a van but here are my ideas:
1) Get some winter tyres.
2) Park about half a car length from a lamp post or some other static thing so that people can't box you in.
3) Maybe get a sign made for a business that won't leave tools in the van overnight. Something like 'Coopers Florist' or 'Rover's Dog Walking.' You can get magnetic signs that just pull off.
4) Get a hot water bottle.
Great tips thank you. I've got a hot water bottle, forgot to mention that. I like the sign idea, I was thinking of a business that would be least likely to be broken in to like some sort of sewage cleaning company 😂
Hi James, Still enjoying the Vids 😃👍A thought for Winter, ever tried a Infra-red Heater 1500w run off the Power Bank. Instant heat when you need it with a glow, warms you not the space/area. It’s what I think I’ll try when I move into my Van. All the best! Si
Thanks for the tip 👍
Nice one . Your tips sound spot on.
Cinematic start, cool
Top tip for getting a shower.... follow a car through the car wash, remember your flannel. I am wondering what happens re insurance and van life?
😂
Killer intro 🔥
Loved the artistic intro of mi tarn.
James you have had some hard times , we are here for you , you are so honest , don't be hard on your self , your tips are useful, I've seen lots of bans on face book sales lately , your so funny with your tales , take care 👍👏🌈
Thank you, I will
Very gritty opening 😂love it
There seem to be lots of new inventions/ideas I'm discovering as I delve deeper into the idea of doing something like this.. I've seen air conditioners being used that are quite small.. I've even seen a company who literally make a "full van inside" for any van.. they open the back doors and push it in on wheels and open everything out as its all on flaps inside.. Hopefully winter won't be too taxing.. Im wondering about condensation building up.
I've seen those too, they look really good. Condensation can be a problem sometimes
artif1ed loves your artiFartyness!
We have been going to central garage at kendray past 5 years and it’s reasonable on price and gets you in fast. Cash only. Give em a call for price and see how it compares.
Thanks I'll have a look
Love your stuff ol son keep em coming 👍
Btw love the terry and june music clips 😎 im going to do a catch up you and Helen are great
Good video. A heater without insulation will just make everything damp, and then you'll really feel the cold. If you're just sleeping in the van as you say, you're better off just wrapping up warm.
Yes, fortunately I have quite good insulation
Oh wakey my home town love it lol 😆
Very interesting 😀 I’ve always wondered what I’d do about post and storage. Having the lock up is brilliant. Have you ever considered sleeping in there, particularly so when it’s really cold, or does the lease not allow it?
It's against the 'terms' but when I've got rid of all my stuff I might try it 😊
You could get a PO box maybe? I think they are about £30 a month. Or have stuff delivered to family/friends if they don't mind.
James I had a wheel bearing fitted on my van not long ago and they only charged me £60. It’s Hi Q in Pontefract. Book yourself in then walk to Wetherspoons ( Broken Bridge ) for a meal and a pint 👍
Thanks mate, that sounds much cheaper than I thought it would be.
🙋♀️ Breakdown cover is *much* cheaper with Green Flag - I was with AA for over 25years and it just kept going up and up ... decided to give Green Flag a go and they have been great AND Cheap ‼️💯💯
When are you going to take the bed out and cut the legs down by just an inch and a half ❓ Will be much better ... no dip-head 😁 drop down table flap is a good idea ... with plenty of hooks and/or pockets. I'm still trying to get my bed done, plus cupboards ... 🙄🙄 but have a blow-up bed for now
I keep wanting to do that but the 'bodged' way I've done it means I'd have to rip everything out and practically start again! 🤔
Storage king Nottingham are good for storage and will accept parcels and do 24 hour access
I spent most of last winter in the van.... got down to -5.... didn't need a heater....just some teddy blankets and a duvet... But that said I am a weekend warrior. Might think differently if i was full time.
I haven’t watched these great videos for awhile just catching up. Been living in a Ford Fiesta myself. Dunno how i do it lol.
Great song great singing 👍🏻😂 vlog weren’t bad either 😂 ❤
Haha thank you
Hi mate, best garage in the area is Dearne Garage at Hoyle Mill.
I take my car and van life kangoo there for servicing and mot. Honest and reliable and you've driven past it loads on your local videos. Hope you stick with JDgyms mate fk the poseurs lol 😂😂
Thanks mate, Ill look them up
Thanks for recommending us Paul 👍🏻
Great videos too 👍🏻
I'd consider parking in laybys where there are tuckers parked up for the night. Safety in numbers.
That double bed is tiny! You must be no taller than 5'2! I once tried sleeping in a sleeping bag in winter in a van overnight and could not cope with the restricted movement. I don't think I could cope with van life, but some of it looks like alot of fun.
I'm 5'10" my legs fit under the shelves at the bottom
I've started using Unity garage at Barugh in Barnsley. Really friendly lads. I took my car there for work I thought needed doing but they rang back and told me it didn't need doing. They could have ripped me off but they were honest with me. If you go there and need a lift back to your parents when you drop your van off, I can do that if it's a weekend. I also used to use Robert Thompson at Darton. They were always honest but I didn't like the attitude of one of the mechanics so I stopped going. Shame because the other staff are fine. I've also heard good reports about Crows garage at Pogmoor.
Thanks mate, I appreciate that. I'll look them up
👍🏻 enjoy your weekend
Welcome to the Terry and June channel 😂.
Nice one Steve its all about keeping it real and telling people how it is 😊
Yes keep your food in the supermarket then you get what you fancy daily, ( food i mean )😅
I'll make a deal you keep vlogging and I'll buy you a van if a lottery win comes my way 😉
Take care pal and look after all thats dear.
Paul and Joanne 👍 😁
Who is Steve?
It's not Barnsley, but defo recommend Bowes Motors at Masborough, Rotherham
Thanks will have a look
Spot on re quiting the wage slavery fella and spending time with precious ones. Oh and an electric blanket is THE gadget to own, my double takes only 20 watts (on low, which is all that's needed) to keep me snug down to -1c in my place last night. Another tip for those who can get cold during the day, electric heated socks, another low power game changer, keep the feet warm and little need for heating at all.
Keep it up, more van life, less chips (your belly says so) please 😂
How much is it costing a month for the lock up ?......is this really vanlife ,when u have a base ?
Absolutely. many vanlifers have units and one of the TH-cam vanlife pioneers talks about the benefits. I pay just over £300 for a large unit
Will You Ever get over To Dublin for a trip Let me know ? Bring you Guys to the Gravediggers Pub for best Pint Of Black.
Loved your video. Keep up the Good work
Thanks we will be coming over in the new year
Have to Meet up I live In Bray seatown outside Dublin Great place stay with van .My Father Lived in Yorkshire for last 30 years i spent my childhood up north every summer@@bythecurb
How do you keep warm in the winter. Have you any recommendations for a small heater?
I liked the opening... "arty" without being too pretentious. Don't know anything about van life except what I have seen on TH-cam but much of what you said rings of good old common-sense. I remember when that was common enough [boy, I am getting old!]. May I offer my three tips for life in general: 1. Never eat at a restaurant called Mom's. 2. In a public washroom, incoming traffic has precedence over outgoing traffic. 3. Trust a politician's promise like you would trust a fox with your hens. 😁 Seriously though, thanks for another entertaining video. Glad that van life is not proving too taxing or unpleasant.
😂 Thanks for the great tips
Love the outtake (particular john cleese), I have same van, getting ready for a clutch now and i have been told anywhere between £400 and £1200 gulp?!?!
Oh no, that's not good. I'm sorry to hear that
Another great video James 👍
Hi James love watchin yr vlogs wa wonderin wen u next round castleton area agen we not too far from there wud love to meet u x
Sorry fogot to say me an my hubby lol x
Not sure but we do get down there quite often. It's usually a last minute thing!
Come a long way pilgrim. I'd only add Industrial estates and small patio/space heater 😈
These are good tips
So useful James. Only take advice from people who actually play the game eh 👍🏴
What about a Luton Van? Plenty of space in it good head height and you'd have plentiful space to stand up eat sleep in..
i have seen luton vans get blown over they are flimsy
Every tip is exactly why I watch your van life vids (not the GF posing ones as I have one of those 😂) and didnt take it up! I dont know how you do it....ah, the storage unit and the GFs house ;-) partial van life 😂
I knew that van o'thine weren't big enough. My Transit int big enough either. But any road it were all kitted out t start wi. I've just had a new starter motor fitted and it turns out that it were draining me battery overnight and causing problems wi the central locking. Nah I've only got to have the suspension renewed, brake pipes replaced and track rod ends done, number plate lights fixed. Can't use me gas rings because they don't do the gas anymore, so i have to use a portable instead. I might have to rent a storage unit, cos at my age there's nobody abaht to collect me post. I have heard, though, that some storage companies register what you store so they can arrange to steal it and sell it off.
I used Storefirst in the past and they were quite good
Really enjoyed the top tips...but the music is very familiar...driving me mad ..what is it ?❤ 8:22
Helen's got it 😊
Where do you get your money from to rent office block, gym, and the run of van .?
I used to be an antique dealer but now I'm full time youtube
Don’t you need a fixed address to use a driving license. What about insurance too?
Hi mate. Top videos, thank you. I was just wondering what about a place for mail. Like for being on the voter roll, car insurance things like that where you need an address
So that you are still building your credit history and being abke to get credit if needed. Cheers
Thank you, I just use a relatives address
@@dumpertruck1cheers thanks
@@bythecurbthank you, cheers
Terry at Hoyland , near caspers chippy
if i move into a van can i still work i mean what happens when they ask your address or your licence address im a bus driver how this work
brilliant
Have you thought about lowering the bed? Then you have more headspace. Just saying.
Yes, I should do that really but the way I've bodged the van means I'd have to rip everything out!
Hiya mate im new to your channel, I have a question, I'm selling my house and going into van life full time...would you say I'm making a good decision? I'm 38 live alone and constantly work away. Any advice would be much appreciated
I assume you don't have any children living with you, in that case then yes. It's the best thing I ever did but you need a few good park ups and it will take a while to get used to
Brilliant
Hardings MOT centre in Royston do repairs top blokes
Ps I left jd gym down there for the same reasons
Thanks, I'll look them up
Barnsley!
How do you plug a laptop in your van?
Not going to lie, that showercam was unexpected
For a better workout with less posers get thissen int' keel over road lol
No. ? Take a fire extinguisher 😅 Seriously, EVs are a concern now irrespective if they are the cause. Take care U2.
Hi how do you get Wi-Fi in the van
I just use my phone. I've for unlimited data and I can connect my laptop to it
Quite new to the channel, what's with the name? Is it a play on words?
No, it's just that I can't spell and it was too late to change it 😂
😂 Nice one. Love your videos.
Can you sleep in the unit?
I could but the problem is there are some 24hr businesses there and its quite noisy. Its good to have in case of emergency though
While tories still exist....you will always have potholes. Checkout michael goves views on the north.
Loved the arty fatty intro
Are you spending more on money on servicing your van
I've been lucky to be fair with no major expense, need to sort the wheel bearing out though
If you was in grimsby or cleethorps I could have recommended someone james
You should have rescue breakdown cover, madness not to, I have RAC and they are briliant, 30mns to an hour always, never had problems, check deals they have now untl the 15th, 1) free healthcheck, 5 callouts, roadside assistance, national recovery £8.35 month down from £12.50 or the full works, including free M.O.T. £11.70 down from £17.50, Get in😊 you know it's reet
