Why coffee makes you more tired: from data visualization to seeing systems | EYEO Festival 2022 Talk

  • The talk I would have given in person at EYEO Festival 2022 if a certain virus hadn't paid me a visit the day before it started.
It's the story of my longing to see the big picture, which I put toward data visualization after seeing Hans Rosling's amazing presentation.
But, as my baffling relationship with caffeine soon revealed, what I wanted wasn't "data visualization" so much as "system visualization". I wanted a way to understand the complex social systems that shape our world. A way to see & reason about them.
This is a larger question I'm exploring in this era of my life.
Say hi to me at: www.davidmora.us
More related to this in this article I wrote:

    Thanks!

Hi, commnity! This video was unlisted for a long time, but I wanted to make it public because it's a hint at where this channel is heading on a deeper level.
This talk is a bit niche. But the videos going forward will lean in this larger "systems-y" direction: digging into the systems -- starting with the creative ones -- that secretly run our world.
I want people to see the big picture in a way they have never before, and feel clarity on how to thrive within it.
When you watch the next video (on the dark side of MrBeast), I think you'll recognize some of these ways of looking for the system (TH-cam as a platform) beneath the symptoms (MrBeast-like content).
If this tickles your interest, I'd love to talk, or feel free to checkout this article I wrote:

Johnathon, thanks so much! That means a lot coming from you: I've been so inspired by your video work. My MrBeast doc was directly inspired by your ideas from in "TH-cam is Broken" (my doc is ad-free, too, actually!)
Every month or so, when I'm thinking about what it means to make an amazing visual essay, I think about your "Stripped-Down Sci-Fi". I actually teared up watching it. I see that you've since moved on from TH-cam largely, but I hope you know what an uplifting impression your work has made on me, as I've stumbled on it years later.
Hope you're well, sending peace your way.

Hey, thanks, Josh, that's really encouraging!
I do have to give some credit where it's due: it was pretty chaotic prior to Michelle Jia and Vishesh Gupta giving me lots of coaching on the words & visuals.

Love this, reminds me of the Dialectic processes in life. Good on you for taking this risk with a new style, the more your personality comes through the more people will come to the videos :)

@vitustheviking your comment means a lot, thanks for saying that. As a creative, I want to be learning & growing with/from viewers, so it means so much to have you on the journey, chiming in & encouraging me, too!
I'd love to learn more about the Dialectic processes in life you mentioned -- is there a book or work I could start with?

same lol. I remember being in my early 30s and finding out what dialectic meant and it changed how I learned and how I argued positions(which of course is a more combative/community form of learning)

At this point, 99% of my channel growth came (and went) with the Johnny Harris video haha :D

You covered Johnny Harris videos showing the relevant topic, then providing context. Why not try that formula? Especially here, where you can use it as an excuse to visit family, etc.? 🙃

Good point! I originally recorded this for a remote talk I was giving, and just shared that as-is here, but I think you're right this could be conveyed much better with show-then-tell. Maybe it'll find a new (and better) form in a future video. Thanks!
