Have you ever been locked out of your banking, PayPal, or other account or been unable to buy a ticket online while travelling ALL because you were unable to receive a 2-Factor Authentication code - without paying ridiculous roaming charges?!! What is your story? We would love to hear!

Hi from Tillsonburg Ontario, we have been following your travels for some time, and of course we are subscribed, Its usually the Algarve / Albufeira for us in March / April for a month or so. We like your tip about Text Now as we have also run into issues trying to do a bit of business. We have an Irish SIM card that we top up for data and phones when in Portugal, it also works in most of Europe. But like you say, no good for banking etc. Now we are thinking of moving our Canadian mobile server from Public mobile to Freedom mobile as they have a roaming plan that works in lots of countries and of course we would keep our Canadian number for banking credit card etc. Have you guys any thoughts on this ? Keep on traveling

Hey guys! Thanks so much for following us along! We love the Algarve so much too! Hence we are headed back in a few months! We have never looked into Public or Freedom Mobile, so sorry we don't have any experience or thoughts on it, sorry. Generally any roaming plan costs a little more and still is a minimum $15/day charge as soon as you turn roaming on when abroad. Unless TextNow stops working for us, we will likely be sticking with that for now. Hopefully with new CRTC regulations, we start getting more options for mobile service. More competition should result in lower prices. Cheers guys!

Important info for sure! I’ve lost cards in machines in Thailand and Vietnam.

Watching a machine eat your card leaves a pit in your stomach! LOL. Having an easy way to call back to Canada is needed at a time like that and you cannot facetime your bank! LOL. Thanks for watching John! Where are you now?

Hi guys just an FYI you can do a temporary suspension to your cell plans in Canada we did that both with Virgin and Fido when we traveled to Argentina over the winter at a much reduced fee ... quite reasonable...but another great video thanks ... we used esim the first month so we had data while entering then local sin afterwards as it was less than $5 a month for 10gb

Hey guys, thanks for watching! And you are correct, we sort of misspoke as you CAN put phones on hold, but our Bell plan wanted $30/month for absolutely nothing! That was simply to hold the phone number and we would have no way of receiving 2FA codes. IF we activated to do that, then we would be charged a regular monthly plan fee of over $100, PLUS roaming (and probably an activation fee LOL) For us, because we are doing this long term, it didn't make sense to keep the canadian plans just to keep our phone numbers for when we are home. It was difficult and time consuming last winter when we had to call VISA to verify purchases like plane tickets, so finding this was amazing for us!! Thanks so much for leaving the comment and letting others know. We appreciate you watching! Cheers!!🥂

Thank you, thank you 🙏🏻 for this video! I had my credit card compromised in Portugal last year. I had a Portuguese e-sim and a Canadian SIM card in my phone. I had to switch to Canadian SIM card and incur the cost for the day and my phone call wouldn’t go through. So, I had my husband do the same thing. Got everything straightened out, new CC issued to be sent home (always bring a back up!!) and when I went home 6 weeks later the total of my cell phone bill was $205 CAD (more than the fraudulent CC charges). And don’t even ask about train tickets etc!!!
A friend has used Fido pay as you go and put $200 on it and used when necessary for 2FA but it is still a pain. This sounds amazing!
Do you just get a pay as you go plan back in Canada?

You are so welcome!! OMG Lori!! What a rigamarole eh?! Definitely always bring a back up CC and yes! the canadian cell charges are outrageous and how infuriating that you couldn't even make a call, but still got your roaming charges. I had run into that in the past even in the US on my phone while vacationing! So, now when we go back to Canada, we use essentially a pay as you go. PC/No name has SIM cards. Gives you a phone number with unlimited call and text and 25 GB data for $25 /month and we set up auto renewal on our credit card, so very cheap!! Then we ditch them when we leave! Thanks for the video idea! LOL. Cheers! 🥂

We keep 1 phone on (and pay through FIDO in Canada $$)and turn 1 off. I don't turn my roaming on and can often still get a code. I occasionally do incur the $15 but it is better for us to have the ability to keep a canadian phone number. I'm interested though!

We completely understand the comfort of keeping a home number. It also depends greatly on how long you actually leave the country. We are pretty much 50/50 and definitely contemplated keeping at least one of our numbers, but in the end decided we would figure it out.

Can you not set up your 2 factor and link it to your email?

    • @mitchandjan
      @mitchandjan  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Hey, good question!! But for banks, you CANNOT! Most rewards programs or lower risk accounts will allow you to use email to receive a verification code, but not banks and credit cards! Cheers!

My bank in Canada will send a security code to an email address. But that email address has to be a paid account. You can't use Gmail or Microsoft Outlook or any of the free email services. But if you have your own website, for example, you can create your own email address based on your domain name. And that qualifies as a paid email account. And my bank at least will send security codes to that email address.
It's not ideal, but it does work for me. It's been a bit of a lifesaver, because I run into all the same problems that you discussed in this video. 😀

Well this is good to know as well! Definitely an option that we hadn't looked into. We do like having the option of being able to call a bank or credit card company if there are any issues however. Its like having an extra line of defence LOL. Thanks for letting us and others know about the paid email option!! Cheers!

I just called my Canadian Bank and they no longer do 2FA through email. They don't consider it safe enough.

@@PlanetDoug Wise will do that but I just got off the phone with Simplii and they no longer support email for 2FA :(
