Sending G-Code to a 3d Printer from Chrome

  • Many 3d printer calibration tasks require sending G-CODE from your computer to your 3D Printer. I ofter recommend using MatterControl from MatterHackers or Octoprint for this task but I am always looking for alternatives. I recently discovered the Chrome G-Code Sender, a Chrome APP created by Buck Clay and listed on Github at the following location:
    github.com/sir-buckyball/chro...
    This Chrome APP supports sending G-Code commands from any computer running Chrome, a Mac, Linux, Windows or Chromebook system, to an attached device over a serial/USB connection.
    You can install this APP in Chrome by cutting and pasting the following (long) URL into your browser address bar:
    chrome.google.com/webstore/de...
    Please leave any comments below so we can continue to learn together.

    I must say that I have been stumbling around in this hobby for 2 years now. I've learned alot since then but stiil not enough that I could think of myself as an expert of any kind. I'm not even sure how I found your channel but I'm glad I did. I've been picking through your videos to learn new things and to sort of validate things that I either know or (think) I know. The comments I keep reading that compliment you for you CLEAR explanations are right in line about what I like about your videos. So many people in this hobby don't hesitate to assist, but they seem to lack the ability in many cases to clearly express their ideas. Alot of assumptions are made as to what we already know and so many of the small details are glossed over. And when you're trying to learn a new skill like this, it really helps to have it explained as if I were a child. Sometimes I'll even post a question in a forum and request "please explain it as if I was in the 1st grade". Your simplistic approach to problem solving and teaching in this sometimes excruciatingly frustrating hobby is so refreshing for an old schooler like me to stumble upon. Thanks for all you do!

    Thank you, thank you, thank you!! This is exactly what I was looking for. I got tired of fumbling with tiny micro SD cards, putting them into an SD adapter, e-mailing the g-code from my primary laptop (which doesn't have an SD card reader) to my older laptop, loading the g-code onto the SD card, trying to put the micro SD in the tiny slot on the bottom of my Ender 3, etc. It was an exasperating process!! I found an old Chromebook that my daughter no longer uses and it has now been adapted as a dedicated print host. I've set up a separate G-Mail account for my 3D prints, e-mail my g-code to that account and just download the files and print from this app. Easy peasy! As an added bonus, the Chromebook has a camera, so I intend to add an IP web cam app so I can monitor my print from anywhere I get internet access. Soon, I'll be able to sit by the pool and monitor my prints. This is awesome!

    Another great video DrVax, keep em coming. I have a few questions that I figure you can help me with. I just recently got an Ender 5 pro and it's a great machine that I enjoy very much. Now I have a question about the micro sd card that came with my machine. It's a Netac 8 GB card. I brought a 65 GB San Disk micro sd card, my machine won't read the new sd card. I have some gcode files on the new micro card to print. What would be the cause for my machine not reading the new sd card?
    My second question is in the near or far future, will Creality come up with a dual print head technology for the Ender 5?
    Thank you for your help and the great videos.

    • @MakeWithTech
      @MakeWithTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. Many Marlin based printers only support SDCards that are 32GB or smaller. The reason for this is that cards with a capacity of over 32GB use a different file system, they use exfat vs fat32. The exfat format supports cards over 32gb and also larger maximum file sizes.
      So the bottom line. You 64gb card will not work. Sorry to deliver bad news.

    Interesting info ... let me ask you this question. I’m having a problem .... my extruder heater work fine. My thermistor is functioning. I have verified both, but when go to bring the nozzle up to set point like for PLA ... the heater starts to rise like it should and it’s showing temp rises to the point it’s set. Once the heater gets to about 95 deg ... it slows down and stops rising toward the 200 deg set point. Then it stalls out and then receives an E1 failure and shuts down .... driving crazy. I’m thinking it’s firmware relative ... not sure if it could be PID settings ... any thought. Thanks for the video.

    • @MakeWithTech
      @MakeWithTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      First we would need to know what brand printer you are using. Then you should run the PID tuning process.

      I theory yes. The app supports loading files. But I have not tried it and I am not sure the flow control on the transmissions is up to the task of sending complete gcode files. This would require some more testing.
      Since APPs are not officially supported for a while this APP has not been updated in a couple of years. I am considering converting it to an extension which would be supported in the current Chrome architecture.

    I tried this on my new 3018 and to connect correctly from my iMac I had to use the cu.usb not the tty.usb. Other thing I ran into was leaving the feed rate at zero it would not move and threw an error 22. Once I upped the feed rate to a number greater than 0, 100 worked for me, the machine responded to jog controls. Will try this on my Ender 3 later.

    ok, I've gotten it to connect, but I send code and my printer does nothing, and doesn't say ok after I hit send

      What printer are you using. Not all 3d printers support the gcode status commands.
      @Caroline Hightower I have started a new discussion forum at forum.drvax.com where we can all have more elaborate discussions and share pictures on our prints and printers. This would be a better place to have long discussions and the wider DrVax community can also help you out. Irv

      I also use Octoprint anytime I have a Raspberry PI attached to the machine. This option is great for new printers before I have the time to set up an Octoprint box.

    PID you read as pid. I've only ever called it 'P' 'I' 'D'. Also, you say e-prom. I've only ever called it double e-prom. I don't know where I got my jargon and it really doesn't matter. I just want to be ultra nerdy and know which is considered the "norm."

    I understand that if your using chrome OS, it actually makes sense, but on any other platform it's just plain stupid in my opinion. Why would anyone use a browser to then add a cable. You don't use a script in MS excel for sending gcode either.

      For some folks installing sw is difficult. If they already have Chrome this is a quick way to get started with sending gcode to a printer.

      I agree. Also not sure pronterface works on the current version of MacOS which I use most of the time.

      Dude youre 3 years in the past. This dude spent a lot of time of his own time just for people like you to judge how he explains things? Id like to see you spend hours of your time making and editing videos just for other people to judge you 3 years later 😂😂
