Of course! The prequels are fun in their own ways and make a lot of elements of the classic trilogy better. This is my favorite Star Wars movie largely due to the Luke-Vader arc. So emotional!

I think it's pretty logical for someone like Anakin, that had felt for a long time that this was going to happen, and everyone stopped him when he tried to do something about it, to simply explode and go on a rampage. Besides dude, again, his mother was killed, how is that a tantrum?
I love the Emperor's anticlimactic death. It's so perfect. He thought he was untouchable, invincible. And he was defeated by a "crippled machine" a man he thought wasn't even powerful enough to overthrow him. And he just dumps his ass over the railing like he's a damn doll 😂
Technically speaking, the reason why Sidious never saw it coming is because at that point Vader let go of his hate. He then sacrificed himself to save his son's life, he attacked out of love for his son, not hate for the Emperor. The Emperor was a sadistic sociopath who was the Sith Master and therefore was unable to see it coming. Also, the second he decided to sacrifice himself to save Luke, Darth Vader was no more. @@Kurahaara86 they aren't cinematic masterpieces for sure but damn they have some really cool bits and overall are better than they get made out to be. Like you can't not watch episode 3 and enjoy at least most of it, especially the last hour. Plus Maul is awesome, and seeing the clone wars and even AOTC had some pretty cool scenes, mostly the battle on geonosis and the lightsaber duels.
If you noticed, Luke's clothes got progressively darker across the trilogy, as he got closer to the dark side, but when he became a jedi, the flap at the front of his tunic fell open to reveal a white part, and show he hadn't fallen.
I like how they kinda flipped that in Episode VII / VIII / IX - in the finale the main protagonist is wearing white.... but in reality things are more complicated
yeah. once I got the first 6 movies on DVD, I took the time to watch all of them, starting from episode I to episode VI, and in the context came to this realization: that Luke was much closer to turning to the dark side than previously thought.
Vaders suit is sensitive to electricity thats why he feared the emperor and even if it didn't kill him the only thing keeping him alive for years was hate and selfishness in the end he let go and was at peace
Can you believe that Ian McDiarmid who portrayed the Emperor was only thirty-eight years old when playing the eighty-something character? And Vader didn't die because he lost his hand, he died because when he picked the Emperor up the lightning damaged the life-support system on his suit.
I've heard things from those up on it that Palpatine intentionally designed Vader's suit to be vulnerable to Force lightening as a proactive personal security measure as Sith usually end up being murdered by their apprentices.
@ronweber1402 Though the suit was made to be painful so Vader would get stronger by the Dark Side as Sith draws power not just by anger, fear and hatred but through pain and agony (physically and mentally).
Originally, it was the ghost of the _old_ Darth Vader at the end of the film. You are watching a version of the film that was a bit tinkered with by George Lucas. He is using young Darth Vader from the Prequel films here.
1. It allows Anakin to possibly come back as a force ghost later on 2. It really connects the OT and PT very well. The OT doesn't have many scenes that does that, so it's good to get a major one
Anakin died in his 40's so it would not make sense if he was played by a guy in his 60's. Lucas has not yet figure out how old Anakain was at this point. So he casted an older actor. This is one changes that I agreed too.

Going back even further, it could also explain why Leia was able to resist giving up the location of the rebel base in A New Hope, despite being subjected to all sorts of torture, drugs, and mind probes.
Also Vader recognized Leia was force sensitive on Bespin which is why he changed his deal with Lando again. You can see it happen just before Han is frozen in carbonite.

Being old enough to have seen this in theaters in it's original release, seeing Vader save Luke was even more emotional because he didn't say "no" those two times. The actor in the suit did such a great job emoting through the mask that you could see his pain as Luke was being tortured. The moment he grabbed the Emperor, the audience erupted with cheer.
I was too young to see it in theatres, but I am very grateful to my parents for showing me the unchanged originals. When I watched it with my best friend later and saw the special editions, I was cringing.

I always cry at anakins death, he died peacefully but he deserved so much more. He deserved a peaceful life with his family not a horrible life serving the empire. I grew up with Vader and I hope our community keeps his character going. Star Wars is the best.
The scene of Vader saving Luke was actually more powerful in the original version, because Vader didn't say "no". The suspense just kept building as he looked back and forth between the others.
Yeah... I think most of the changes are neither here nor there no matter how silly they are -- i don't care whether Han drew first or what age Anakin's force ghost is -- but this is a pivotal scene that's just outright worse than it was before.

Lucas must have wanted it to 'rhyme' with Darth Vader's birth, when he yelled "NO" about Padme's death. I agree. Silly. Then again the first revised release of Empire Strikes Back had Luke screaming while he was falling down the shaft after letting go in Bespin. Made no sense.
So ya that never works out well. before I became a officer and flew for the USN I was enlisted as a MA (Navy version of MP) and those people that tried to always drive casual hoping I would not see them because for some reason they really didn't want the attention (Usually were or did something wrong) stuck out as if they were holding up a neon flashing sign that screamed look at me I'm right here

The reason it happened, is complex, and can only be understood by fans of the originals. Rogue One brought us the first moment we actually see Darth Vader go to town in a battle. His full bore weight brought down upon his enemies with all the special effects that modern cinema can provide. It was almost like seeing the character for the first time since the originals. Seeing the character finally get some of his pride back from that pathetic pile of vomit he was subjected to in the Prequels. And it was done perfectly. It was short, sweet, and confined, rather than an exhausting 30 min lightsaber fight with an expansive cartoon background.
One of the most touching things is Star Wars is when Darth Vader's mask comes off, and you see that beneath all that evil and menace, there was simply a sad, wounded, broken man 😭 You may struggle to forgive Darth Vader for his war crimes, but it still tugs at your heartstrings to see the fate of Anakin Skywalker.

In the end, Anakin did bring balance to the Force, as a redeemed jedi knight. And said goodbye to his son with a smile. Perfect scene.
I'm glad you caught the tone of sadness in his voice when Vader says "it is too late for me, my son." A fair number of people miss that. James Earl Jones really nailed the delivery of that line.
You can sense in Vader's words and tone of voice that he is feeling the weight of all of the bad choices and evil deeds he has done bearing down on him. He's done things that he can never come back from or be redeemed of. He can't save himself, but in the end he saves his son.
I think it's interesting that you know a fair number of people don't notice it, did you perform an exit poll? Seems like a fairly obvious, hard to miss thing to me. As you said James Earl Jones nailed the delivery, it's the height of the movie.
@@dongilleo9743 In return, he's saved by his son. It's powerful stuff redemption. In the end, Vader was always redeemable, he just needed his son to remind him of it, and believe in the good in him, when he couldn't do it himself.

ABSOLUTELY, please watch The Mandalorian. The main character in that series is the guy who FINALLY made me think Mandalorian bounty hunters are ACTUAL bad-asses. You really liked A New Hope, so I know you'll like Mando.
Boba Fett was never supposed to be a big character; he was basically just a delivery man with a cool suit, so they didn't have any issue with having him go out like that. Had the internet existed back then, I expect they'd have given him a bigger role after hearing all the feedback they'd have gotten on him after Empire.
Darth Vader actually became one of my favorite characters too during these movies and then when I watched the prequels, he became my number one, by far one of the most complex and tragic characters in film history
The scenes with Luke and Vader are the reason this is my favourite Star Wars movie. When Vader finally gives in and saves Luke I cry every time. They saved each other. I love it so much.
The thing I like most about these movies is the way George Lucas created a "lived in universe" with dirt and dust and scrapes and dents. And how he used familiar things like WWII dogfights for the way the spaceships fight and even real-world weapons for the blasters.
The reason you saw Anakin Skywalker young at the ending is because when Darth Vader re-accepted the Light side of the Force, we were shown him at the point of when he was good. Which was when he was young. The reason we see Yoda and Obi-Wan at their older ages is because they were good their entire lives.

@@sonnic1995 not really guys to let you know, this is a new ending that was filmed after the prequel came out, this is why you can see Hayden Christensen ( Anakin's actor in the prequel). The original ending can be found on youtube and shows the actor that played Darth Vader in the trilogy so an older Anakin :)

He still had not completly turned to the dark side. And in my opinion had the jedi councel give anakin more recognition and appreciation he would have perhap never decided to turn to the darkness. Because lots of his frustration and anger came from feeling put aside and not having the respect he wanted. But those are what if's. 😅 But you can also say that he turned for the best at the end and therefore should still be depicted as the older anakin. Then again, i think having him being younger can give the serie viewer another incentive to check the earlier episodes of starwars. Anyway, to each his own preferences! Cheers!
A thing to remember is that before this film, there WAS no Force lightning. The only things we'd seen the Force do were subtle things, like sensing a presence, semi-hypnotic suggestion and some light telekinesis (or heavy, in Yoda's case). The Emperor pulling out the lightning was an unexpected corruption of the power of the Force, representing his power and his evil. That's why I always disliked it appearing in so much other Star Wars media (eg. the video games). It trivialized what was supposed to be perceived as the ultimate power, the ultimate evil.
40 years later Return of the Jedi still is so riveting and powerful watching this as it was open day in 1983. I remember when the Emperor was killing Luke with the force lightning the tension in the audience in the theater was unbelievable. People were gasping and women and girls were screaming and crying for Vader to react, and the moment when he grabbed the Emperor everyone including myself were on our feet going absolutely crazy!! I will cherish that day all the rest of my life!!
When Leia says "Somehow I've always known" about her and Luke being siblings, I always felt like she meant more as an intuitive feeling rather than knowing as a fact. Getting the confirmation that they are actually twins just solidified what she was feeling; that there was something unique about their connection.
It may be deeper than that. You may sometimes deeply fall in love with someone, only to realize that this never materializes. Yet, you feel like you were soul-twins, if you know what I mean. You feel a deeper connection than may be possible with mere love; like a connection between twins, as if she/he were family. It's hard to explain if you never experienced it.
@@CrashLandon1 Sure, that was a "hello kiss", or a "bye kiss". That was totally the intention back then when Leia and Luke were not even supposed to be siblings and she was both of the MCs' love interest. Suuuuure.
In the end, it was a Skywalker that killed Darth Vader, subverting the lie that was told earlier about what happened to Anakin. Anakin saved his son, as well as killing Vader and the Emperor
4:35 what always amazes me (especially in this film) is that a lot of the big landscape shots are matte paintings on glass shower doors. Any moving parts were filmed separately then projected in to gaps in the paint and then refilmed so that they fit seamlessly into the painting.
Watching you ... watch Return of Jedi for the first time was almost as good as getting to experience it all over again myself. Your reactions during and after warms my heart. Another lifelong fan created.. who *gets* it. Welcome to the family.
The best part of this movie is that Luke did what no other Jedi, Sith or being in general could do… he freed his father. From his fear and from his bondage to the Emperor.
I forget sometime how great the Luke / Han exchanges are, because they're so spaced apart (rescue-the-princess debate, "what do you think of her Han?" debate, the radio chatter on Hoth, and then the one you mentioned). My favorite part of that one is "There's nothing to see. I used to live here, you know." / "You're gonna die here, you know." Though it makes me sad that Luke & Ani never got to discuss how much they both dislike sand.
As a gamer who first played Star Wars the RPG back in the 80s, and immersing myself in the universe (but not to the extent of even more avid fans), there is a lot to say about so many things. Even now, at age 54, I play. The revamped d6 system in the Old Republic setting, 3,000 years before the movies feels like the best place to create new characters and write our own stories.
That's pretty cool honestly, as I grew up during the Prequel era, and accumulated all of the books, comics, and games. I did get my hands on the Star Wars RPG, and I love it. My favorite setting to do the RPG stuff in is either the Fall of the Republic (1,000 BBY-23 BBY), the Rise of the Empire/Age of Rebellion (22 BBY-4 ABY), or New Republic (5 ABY-25 ABY) to New Jedi Order (25 ABY-37 ABY). I think my favorite campaign I have done is one I'm still doing with some friends. It's going from 40 BBY-somewhere around 30 ABY, and it follows some Jedi who start off as Padawans and go on to become Jedi Masters who live through the Jedi Purge and beyond.

Originally, Darth Vader didn't say "No" before casting Palpatine to his death. It was silent reflection, as if his life choices and his past all came flashing before him in that instant when he saw his son being killed. That was his breaking point, where all of the hatred and anger finally left him that he harbored for more than 20 years.
Yes, the Haden Christiansen ghost for Anakin was one too many edits in the updated versions. He used to be old Anakin. Why would others still be old? Just because you CAN change it, doesn't mean you should, Lucas!
If you are a person that reads books, read the "Tale of" series of books. My favorites are Tales of Jabbas Palace, Tales of the Bounty Hunter and Tales of the Mos Eisley Cantina. They provide so much more background to what else is going on in the Star Wars Universe during the three films.
When Leia says 'she knew', I don't think she means she knew consciously. She only knew subconsciously that they had a connection, but she didn't understand the exact nature of it until that moment. The line wasn't meant to be taken literally, she's definitely just realizing it in that moment.
I've always understood it like: "I know" means: "I know you are telling the truth. I feel it. I've always known, but not know what I know". When Luke says it, it all make sense for Leia. maybe not the best explanation, but I hope you understand my point.
Ironic. Yeah, I think Leia meant, "I didn't understand it consciously, but at a subconscious level I've always known that you and I had a special connection. It never occurred to me consciously, but now that you've told me that we are siblings, I know it's true because it completely explains how I've always felt about you." Or... "You have always felt like family to me... and now I know why." I don't think this is very different from what you said -- I'm just putting these ideas in my own words.

Exactly, she knew in her subconscious but she couldn't make sense of it until Luke sealed it with the news. Let's not forget she made the Falcon to turned around to extract Luke from Cloud City too.
She only Kissed Luke to put the man she truly loves in his place. She would have kissed a sign post in order to make Han realize he has no power over her. It was strategic.

I have to say. Your reactions videos are the best I've seen so far. These movies came out when I was a kid and I've seen them I don't know how many times. And you had insights into these films that I never thought of before.
She just kissed Luke to piss off Han and she felt an affinity for Luke, she didn’t actually know they were siblings at the time. They exchanged the other actor, Sebastian Shaw, with Hayden Christensen as the force ghost, in the remastered version.

The answer is simply that Lucas is an idiot with an irresistible penchant for changing things just because he has the power to. Once you go down that road you might as well replace all Alec McGuinness's force ghost appearances with re shoots using Ewan McGregor, or replace puppet Yoda with CG Yoda. The truly sad thing is that I've no doubt Lucas did consider exactly those steps - but he's well aware that if he changed Obi Wan's force appearance it would cause a real breakdown amongst the fans. I just hate that Sebastian Shaw was so disrespected by Lucas that he could so easily cast aside his only appearance in the film. It's just so petty and adds nothing to the film - soulless would be an understatement, whatever artistic instincts he had when he made ANH were long gone by the time he did the special 'editions', let alone the DVD alterations.
If I may add my insight as to a possible reason why Hayden was later shown as the Force ghost of Anakin is because it was his last form as a Jedi before going to the Dark Side

I don’t know if you still read these comments but, the reason Darth Vader turned into a younger version of himself as a force ghost is because that’s how he remembered himself when he was last in the light.
"When you die you become young again? Why is Yoda old then?" I have heard this question before. My interpretation is that in lore only light side people can become force ghosts. When Darth Vader was reformed at the last minute of his life, his soul reverted to the last state he was in prior to turning to the dark side. "I loved them SO MUCH!" These movies released when I was 13. Many of us at the time went back to see them again and again. I myself saw the original movie at least 10+ times at the theater and subsequent movies less, but still loved them. Since then I bought the series on VHS, then on DVD, then again on Blu Ray purchasing all the prequels as well. I personally was not a prequel hater. I was just extremely happy to get more Star Wars and I don't remember being disappointed like many people were. I loved them as well. This single series solidified my love of movies and caused me to become a huge fan of many different movie series.

I think the whole reason Anakin is young compared to Ben and Yoda is because his real death was after his fight with Ben. The suit mainly just kept him alive artificially and kept him enslaved to the dark side.
I loved watching your reactions to the Star Wars Saga. I saw the Original Trilogy when they first came out on the big screen. Star Wars will last for generations and it's great seeing how other generations react to this epic films. Great job with these videos!

The reason young Anakin was shown instead of the old is because symbolically, Anakin "died" when he was younger when he first became Darth Vader. Obi-Wan said earlier that when Anakin became Vader, Anakin was destroyed, and in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Yoda said to Obi-Wan "The boy you trained gone he is, consumed by Darth Vader.". Also, I believe that you can alter your Force Ghost to your previous forms and not necessarily stay the way you died in because in The Force Awakens (I don't see the sequels as canon, though, even if many people do) you can hear Obi-Wan's voice as both his old (Alec McGuiness) and younger self (Ewan McGregor).
I love how the cameraman (Garrett Brown) walked through a Northern California Redwood Forest with a very heavy camera for hours at a time, working so hard to hold the camera while focusing on the path ahead, with the camera only taking a shot about every second, so when it was sped up it looked like you were traveling 120 miles per hour in the speeder chase scene.
It's an amazing piece of storytelling. In A New Hope, Vader was presented as the ultimate stereotype of an evil villain. Who would have guessed that two movies later we would be emotional and sad when he dies?
The reason Han Solo was frozen in Empire as a plot point was because Harrison Ford at the time had not yet signed his contract for this movie. They froze him so in case he didn't, it'd be fairly easy to kill him off-screen.
Also, Leia was undeveloped with the force so her 'force' wasn't projecting out like it was for Luke. Also, Darth Vader was hurt because he grabbed the emperor while all that force power was projecting out and it basically killed him.
And THIS is why the original three Star Wars films are the GREATEST trilogy to ever come to the big screen. Nothing warms the soul like a redemptive story arc. The story is timeless and still packs a punch to this day.
Apologies if these have already been answered : Luke purposely left his lightsaber with R2 in case Jabba was uncooperative. I'm not sure he knew exactly how it would go down but he was always prepared for a fight to rescue Han. In the original version, Anakin's force ghost wasn't young at the end, he was a smiling old man. I prefer that version personally
19:12 Blocking Luke's attack on the Emperor wasn't to protect Palpatine, it was to protect Luke. If the Emperor thought that Vader wasn't going to protect him, he would protect himself. That means using lightning. Vader had battled with Luke before. He knows he is no match for the Emperor. Vader tells Luke to join him so they can destroy the Emperor. When he said that he didn't mean "Hey! I'm going to kill the Emperor by myself do you want to be my new number two?" He meant "If you join me and let me train you in the Dark Side we might have enough strength to overpower the Emperor." Really, the only way that Vader was able to kill the Emperor was because he was distracted from torturing Luke. Even then the Emperor was able to mortally wound Vader. FUN FACT: George Lucas, at the point that he made Return of the Jedi, earned a world record for having employed more little people (dwarves, etc) than any other filmmaker in history. So apparently a lot of little people love him because his movies have given them tons of work.

Some things that child me didn't understand, but adult me does: 1. Lucas has repeatedly said that Darth Vader is supposed to be pathetic. The Emperor is pissed off that his disciple is all burned and replaced with robotic parts, and he's much weaker as a result. Vader is in constant pain and struggles to breathe even with the machinery. The Emperor intended to ditch Vader and replace him with the much healthier Luke. 2 The dark side of the force isn't just a source of power, it literally changes those who embrace it. It's a slippery slope and if you start down that path, it seduces you to keep going further. People don't like the change of Anakin to Vader, but the point is that he was not convinced by Palpatine's arguments, but by the power of the force literally changing him. 3. The reason that Princess Leia was the most accurate sharp shooter of the entire series was because she was strong in the force just like Luke. It's also why she was able to jump on the land speeder and fly off like she'd been doing it since she was a toddler.

One of my favorite behind the scenes things is that they actually blew up the giant barge in the desert and years later people found bits of it and thought it was some ancient society. Only to realize it was from a movie.

Plus Maul is awesome, and seeing the clone wars and even AOTC had some pretty cool scenes, mostly the battle on geonosis and the lightsaber duels.
If you noticed, Luke's clothes got progressively darker across the trilogy, as he got closer to the dark side, but when he became a jedi, the flap at the front of his tunic fell open to reveal a white part, and show he hadn't fallen.

I've heard things from those up on it that Palpatine intentionally designed Vader's suit to be vulnerable to Force lightening as a proactive personal security measure as Sith usually end up being murdered by their apprentices.

Originally, it was the ghost of the _old_ Darth Vader at the end of the film. You are watching a version of the film that was a bit tinkered with by George Lucas. He is using young Darth Vader from the Prequel films here.
One of the worst changes imho. Anakin just died on the Death Star. There is zero reason he should look like Hayden and not Sebastian.
1. It allows Anakin to possibly come back as a force ghost later on 2. It really connects the OT and PT very well. The OT doesn't have many scenes that does that, so it's good to get a major one
Anakin died in his 40's so it would not make sense if he was played by a guy in his 60's. Lucas has not yet figure out how old Anakain was at this point. So he casted an older actor. This is one changes that I agreed too.

Being old enough to have seen this in theaters in it's original release, seeing Vader save Luke was even more emotional because he didn't say "no" those two times. The actor in the suit did such a great job emoting through the mask that you could see his pain as Luke was being tortured. The moment he grabbed the Emperor, the audience erupted with cheer.
I was too young to see it in theatres, but I am very grateful to my parents for showing me the unchanged originals. When I watched it with my best friend later and saw the special editions, I was cringing.

I always cry at anakins death, he died peacefully but he deserved so much more. He deserved a peaceful life with his family not a horrible life serving the empire. I grew up with Vader and I hope our community keeps his character going. Star Wars is the best.
The scene of Vader saving Luke was actually more powerful in the original version, because Vader didn't say "no". The suspense just kept building as he looked back and forth between the others.
Yeah... I think most of the changes are neither here nor there no matter how silly they are -- i don't care whether Han drew first or what age Anakin's force ghost is -- but this is a pivotal scene that's just outright worse than it was before.

Lucas must have wanted it to 'rhyme' with Darth Vader's birth, when he yelled "NO" about Padme's death. I agree. Silly. Then again the first revised release of Empire Strikes Back had Luke screaming while he was falling down the shaft after letting go in Bespin. Made no sense.

Rogue One is the only Star Wars movie to make me cry, and one of the only movies ever to make me cry.
The reason it happened, is complex, and can only be understood by fans of the originals.
Rogue One brought us the first moment we actually see Darth Vader go to town in a battle.
His full bore weight brought down upon his enemies with all the special effects that modern cinema can provide.
It was almost like seeing the character for the first time since the originals. Seeing the character finally get some of his pride back from that pathetic pile of vomit he was subjected to in the Prequels.
And it was done perfectly. It was short, sweet, and confined, rather than an exhausting 30 min lightsaber fight with an expansive cartoon background.

One of the most touching things is Star Wars is when Darth Vader's mask comes off, and you see that beneath all that evil and menace, there was simply a sad, wounded, broken man 😭 You may struggle to forgive Darth Vader for his war crimes, but it still tugs at your heartstrings to see the fate of Anakin Skywalker.

I'm glad you caught the tone of sadness in his voice when Vader says "it is too late for me, my son." A fair number of people miss that. James Earl Jones really nailed the delivery of that line.
You can sense in Vader's words and tone of voice that he is feeling the weight of all of the bad choices and evil deeds he has done bearing down on him. He's done things that he can never come back from or be redeemed of. He can't save himself, but in the end he saves his son.
I think it's interesting that you know a fair number of people don't notice it, did you perform an exit poll? Seems like a fairly obvious, hard to miss thing to me. As you said James Earl Jones nailed the delivery, it's the height of the movie.

Boba Fett was never supposed to be a big character; he was basically just a delivery man with a cool suit, so they didn't have any issue with having him go out like that. Had the internet existed back then, I expect they'd have given him a bigger role after hearing all the feedback they'd have gotten on him after Empire.

The thing I like most about these movies is the way George Lucas created a "lived in universe" with dirt and dust and scrapes and dents. And how he used familiar things like WWII dogfights for the way the spaceships fight and even real-world weapons for the blasters.
The reason you saw Anakin Skywalker young at the ending is because when Darth Vader re-accepted the Light side of the Force, we were shown him at the point of when he was good. Which was when he was young. The reason we see Yoda and Obi-Wan at their older ages is because they were good their entire lives.

The original ending can be found on youtube and shows the actor that played Darth Vader in the trilogy so an older Anakin :)

But you can also say that he turned for the best at the end and therefore should still be depicted as the older anakin. Then again, i think having him being younger can give the serie viewer another incentive to check the earlier episodes of starwars.

A thing to remember is that before this film, there WAS no Force lightning. The only things we'd seen the Force do were subtle things, like sensing a presence, semi-hypnotic suggestion and some light telekinesis (or heavy, in Yoda's case). The Emperor pulling out the lightning was an unexpected corruption of the power of the Force, representing his power and his evil.
That's why I always disliked it appearing in so much other Star Wars media (eg. the video games). It trivialized what was supposed to be perceived as the ultimate power, the ultimate evil.
40 years later Return of the Jedi still is so riveting and powerful watching this as it was open day in 1983. I remember when the Emperor was killing Luke with the force lightning the tension in the audience in the theater was unbelievable. People were gasping and women and girls were screaming and crying for Vader to react, and the moment when he grabbed the Emperor everyone including myself were on our feet going absolutely crazy!! I will cherish that day all the rest of my life!!
When Leia says "Somehow I've always known" about her and Luke being siblings, I always felt like she meant more as an intuitive feeling rather than knowing as a fact. Getting the confirmation that they are actually twins just solidified what she was feeling; that there was something unique about their connection.

4:35 what always amazes me (especially in this film) is that a lot of the big landscape shots are matte paintings on glass shower doors. Any moving parts were filmed separately then projected in to gaps in the paint and then refilmed so that they fit seamlessly into the painting.
Watching you ... watch Return of Jedi for the first time was almost as good as getting to experience it all over again myself. Your reactions during and after warms my heart. Another lifelong fan created.. who *gets* it. Welcome to the family.
The best part of this movie is that Luke did what no other Jedi, Sith or being in general could do… he freed his father. From his fear and from his bondage to the Emperor.
And this is one of the reasons why Luke was worthy of being the next Jedi grandmaster after Yoda.
That's because no one else was willing to risk his life to save Vader.
No one else thought Vader could be saved. Everyone thought he was lost to the Dark Side. Luke sensed what everyone else was convinced was gone.

I forget sometime how great the Luke / Han exchanges are, because they're so spaced apart (rescue-the-princess debate, "what do you think of her Han?" debate, the radio chatter on Hoth, and then the one you mentioned). My favorite part of that one is "There's nothing to see. I used to live here, you know." / "You're gonna die here, you know." Though it makes me sad that Luke & Ani never got to discuss how much they both dislike sand.

As a gamer who first played Star Wars the RPG back in the 80s, and immersing myself in the universe (but not to the extent of even more avid fans), there is a lot to say about so many things. Even now, at age 54, I play. The revamped d6 system in the Old Republic setting, 3,000 years before the movies feels like the best place to create new characters and write our own stories.
That's pretty cool honestly, as I grew up during the Prequel era, and accumulated all of the books, comics, and games. I did get my hands on the Star Wars RPG, and I love it. My favorite setting to do the RPG stuff in is either the Fall of the Republic (1,000 BBY-23 BBY), the Rise of the Empire/Age of Rebellion (22 BBY-4 ABY), or New Republic (5 ABY-25 ABY) to New Jedi Order (25 ABY-37 ABY). I think my favorite campaign I have done is one I'm still doing with some friends. It's going from 40 BBY-somewhere around 30 ABY, and it follows some Jedi who start off as Padawans and go on to become Jedi Masters who live through the Jedi Purge and beyond.

Originally, Darth Vader didn't say "No" before casting Palpatine to his death. It was silent reflection, as if his life choices and his past all came flashing before him in that instant when he saw his son being killed. That was his breaking point, where all of the hatred and anger finally left him that he harbored for more than 20 years.
It was much better, and more in character, without the "Nooooo!"

If you are a person that reads books, read the "Tale of" series of books. My favorites are Tales of Jabbas Palace, Tales of the Bounty Hunter and Tales of the Mos Eisley Cantina. They provide so much more background to what else is going on in the Star Wars Universe during the three films.
Shawdows of the Empire also does a great job coving the time between Empire and Jedi.
When Leia says 'she knew', I don't think she means she knew consciously. She only knew subconsciously that they had a connection, but she didn't understand the exact nature of it until that moment. The line wasn't meant to be taken literally, she's definitely just realizing it in that moment.
I've always understood it like: "I know" means: "I know you are telling the truth. I feel it. I've always known, but not know what I know". When Luke says it, it all make sense for Leia.

She (VKunia) could already see this, she asked WHY they did it.
The answer is simply that Lucas is an idiot with an irresistible penchant for changing things just because he has the power to.
Once you go down that road you might as well replace all Alec McGuinness's force ghost appearances with re shoots using Ewan McGregor, or replace puppet Yoda with CG Yoda.
The truly sad thing is that I've no doubt Lucas did consider exactly those steps - but he's well aware that if he changed Obi Wan's force appearance it would cause a real breakdown amongst the fans.
I just hate that Sebastian Shaw was so disrespected by Lucas that he could so easily cast aside his only appearance in the film.
It's just so petty and adds nothing to the film - soulless would be an understatement, whatever artistic instincts he had when he made ANH were long gone by the time he did the special 'editions', let alone the DVD alterations.
If I may add my insight as to a possible reason why Hayden was later shown as the Force ghost of Anakin is because it was his last form as a Jedi before going to the Dark Side

I don’t know if you still read these comments but, the reason Darth Vader turned into a younger version of himself as a force ghost is because that’s how he remembered himself when he was last in the light.
"When you die you become young again? Why is Yoda old then?" I have heard this question before. My interpretation is that in lore only light side people can become force ghosts. When Darth Vader was reformed at the last minute of his life, his soul reverted to the last state he was in prior to turning to the dark side.
"I loved them SO MUCH!" These movies released when I was 13. Many of us at the time went back to see them again and again. I myself saw the original movie at least 10+ times at the theater and subsequent movies less, but still loved them. Since then I bought the series on VHS, then on DVD, then again on Blu Ray purchasing all the prequels as well. I personally was not a prequel hater. I was just extremely happy to get more Star Wars and I don't remember being disappointed like many people were. I loved them as well. This single series solidified my love of movies and caused me to become a huge fan of many different movie series.

I think the whole reason Anakin is young compared to Ben and Yoda is because his real death was after his fight with Ben. The suit mainly just kept him alive artificially and kept him enslaved to the dark side.

The reason young Anakin was shown instead of the old is because symbolically, Anakin "died" when he was younger when he first became Darth Vader. Obi-Wan said earlier that when Anakin became Vader, Anakin was destroyed, and in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Yoda said to Obi-Wan "The boy you trained gone he is, consumed by Darth Vader.". Also, I believe that you can alter your Force Ghost to your previous forms and not necessarily stay the way you died in because in The Force Awakens (I don't see the sequels as canon, though, even if many people do) you can hear Obi-Wan's voice as both his old (Alec McGuiness) and younger self (Ewan McGregor).
I love how the cameraman (Garrett Brown) walked through a Northern California Redwood Forest with a very heavy camera for hours at a time, working so hard to hold the camera while focusing on the path ahead, with the camera only taking a shot about every second, so when it was sped up it looked like you were traveling 120 miles per hour in the speeder chase scene.
And they invented the steadicam to make those shots possible!
I heard that the forest is no longer. It was logged shortly after filming. That is why they were allowed to do SOME damage to the trees and stuff.

The reason Han Solo was frozen in Empire as a plot point was because Harrison Ford at the time had not yet signed his contract for this movie. They froze him so in case he didn't, it'd be fairly easy to kill him off-screen.
Luke was thinking about leia, that’s how Vader found out and used it against him
Also, Leia was undeveloped with the force so her 'force' wasn't projecting out like it was for Luke. Also, Darth Vader was hurt because he grabbed the emperor while all that force power was projecting out and it basically killed him.
And THIS is why the original three Star Wars films are the GREATEST trilogy to ever come to the big screen. Nothing warms the soul like a redemptive story arc. The story is timeless and still packs a punch to this day.

Luke purposely left his lightsaber with R2 in case Jabba was uncooperative. I'm not sure he knew exactly how it would go down but he was always prepared for a fight to rescue Han.
In the original version, Anakin's force ghost wasn't young at the end, he was a smiling old man.

19:12 Blocking Luke's attack on the Emperor wasn't to protect Palpatine, it was to protect Luke. If the Emperor thought that Vader wasn't going to protect him, he would protect himself. That means using lightning. Vader had battled with Luke before. He knows he is no match for the Emperor. Vader tells Luke to join him so they can destroy the Emperor. When he said that he didn't mean "Hey! I'm going to kill the Emperor by myself do you want to be my new number two?" He meant "If you join me and let me train you in the Dark Side we might have enough strength to overpower the Emperor." Really, the only way that Vader was able to kill the Emperor was because he was distracted from torturing Luke. Even then the Emperor was able to mortally wound Vader. So in conclusion, Vader blocked Luke's lightsaber because he had no chance at actually killing the Emperor. If the Emperor felt that his life was actually in danger he would have easily killed Luke.
14:08 this is a really good demonstration of Leia subconsciously using the Force. Similar to young Anakin with podracing. It's a form of Split Second precognition force users refer to as Double-Vison. Qui-Gon talked about it with Mama Skywalker in Phantom Menace.

Exactly. Vader was barely being kept alive by his life-support suit, and it didn't take that much to kill him once that got electrified.
The suit is weak to lightning he designed the suit to be like that so if Vader betrayed him he would be defeated
FUN FACT: George Lucas, at the point that he made Return of the Jedi, earned a world record for having employed more little people (dwarves, etc) than any other filmmaker in history. So apparently a lot of little people love him because his movies have given them tons of work.

Some things that child me didn't understand, but adult me does: 1. Lucas has repeatedly said that Darth Vader is supposed to be pathetic. The Emperor is pissed off that his disciple is all burned and replaced with robotic parts, and he's much weaker as a result. Vader is in constant pain and struggles to breathe even with the machinery. The Emperor intended to ditch Vader and replace him with the much healthier Luke. 2 The dark side of the force isn't just a source of power, it literally changes those who embrace it. It's a slippery slope and if you start down that path, it seduces you to keep going further. People don't like the change of Anakin to Vader, but the point is that he was not convinced by Palpatine's arguments, but by the power of the force literally changing him. 3. The reason that Princess Leia was the most accurate sharp shooter of the entire series was because she was strong in the force just like Luke. It's also why she was able to jump on the land speeder and fly off like she'd been doing it since she was a toddler.
