John Paul Young was singing Evie (part two) at Stevie Wrights funeral this morning. He did a great job. So like the way he sang back then, you would think he was channelling him.
A pretty cool moment in Australian rock Stevie fighting off his demons & giving the crowd a great show with some of the best local muso's of their time.
Gotta be one of the greatest gigs in Australian rock music history and this song...well...what can you say...the greatest live performance ever. I'm a 54 year young Kiwi and this is the first time (14/9/17) I have ever seen this gig and song and it is so special. The crowd is feeling it for sure. And so was Stevie Wright and his band. Phenomenal performance.

Tickets to Stevie Wright and Hard Rain??? He lived with us in early 90's., in a house with many creatives. I knew him v well. He fell down the drainpipe at number 75 (Balmain) coming home from photo shoot v late. Having forgotten his keys, he tried to climb to his room upstairs via bathroom drainpipe. He had snakeskin boots on. I was woken by bloodcurdling yelling of my name. His leg was shattered. I'm a nurse. I woke Bruno Renzella, Hard Rain guitarist (and also session guitarist for Barnes) and we carried him inside, ambulance etc. Stevie and I got very close but vicious gossip and jealousy tried to destroy it. I mean, it was v vicious. But we would talk for hours, he was a very astute and intelligent man. But in the mornings, 1st thing, he would roll over and pour himself a large glass of Southern Comfort whiskey. Lord. He loved it. Then came the Methodone. Then the odd v seedy dealer dropping off the foils. I hated those dealers. Then the spoons. The need for constant clean needle supply. Endless bottles of Southern Comfort. This is the realities of living with such a person. But the times of brilliant clarity when he settled to talk. Worth it all. He could talk to me about anything because I am well read, and was having a break from nursing and working at Sydney Uni Library and he thought it was classy!! I bought home great books. The odd other girl around were not as educated as me at all. Which appeared his usual type of girlfriend. I liked one of them v much and was v annoyed when he got her to have a hit. They were out to it on the loungeroom floor when I came home from work. She had children!!! I could have killed him. I never felt jealousy.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... But I never realised till later it had been me he was working towards. He left it too late. He gave me the biggest and greatest compliment anyone has ever given me. I shall never forget it. He said that I ' had everything' ..meaning everything a man would want. Embarrassing as it is to write about it, I am not comfortable big noting ... he said.....' You have Looks, Brains, Class, Style, Compassion and Understanding.' But there was a strong movement to destroy what he and I had and in the end it did. From 2 older vicious single women in particular. I even once overheard them discussing what crap they were going to say and try etc etc. The odd person believed their malicious gossip and one unfortunately was Bruno Renzella. Who was such an idiot. I told Stevie, but he brushed it off saying he and I know the truth, that was all that mattered. Which is true. But one day someone else lured me away and I remember Stevie just asking sadly 'But are you happy'?? I lied. Because I couldn't take the games and viciousness of that house anymore. And I know he went downhill from there. But I loved him. Still do.
Don't know if there has to be this story telling about our greatest rock frontman. Who knows who really knew him and honestly who cares. Listen to the music of this genius. That's what matters now

Saw him at the Bexley North hotel one morning in the early 90's, he could see that I recognised him and came over and introduced himself, when i as at the bar, the 20 something girl with him was playing video poker machines. We had a good chat for about 10 mins, really nice guy, what a legend, vale Stevie Wright.
I cry every time I watch this. He was our idol in the 60's in The Easy Beats and so loved. But he couldn't love himself. So much more he could have done. Well missed. R.I.P.
I wish I knew about the Easy Beats years ago. I only learned about the song Evie while reading a book about Angus, Malcolm and George Young last year. There was a chapter dedicated to this song because George co-wrote it and Malcolm played guitar on it. Reading about the song made me look it up on TH-cam and I found this live version. I......was......floored. What an amazing performance. I talked so much about it my son and his wife got me a vinyl copy of "Hard Road" album for my birthday. And yes, every time I watch this performance, I choke up as well because music will never be this good again.
The memory of sitting in a small country pub having a countery and a beer with the Jukebox playing Evie is etched into my life and brings back fond memories of youth...Thanks Stevie...
I was at this concert in 79. It was a Sunday afternoon. Plenty of cans and two HSC exams the next day. Nailed it all- especially the cans. Scored over 400 despite the headache. Max Merritt was on late as the highlight but

I was at that show that day, Stevie Wright "Stole the show" the other bands were all great, but HE was the Star Attraction. R.I.P. Stevie, you already are, and forever will be, Sadly missed.
The Easybeats were an Australian rock band. They formed in Sydney in late 1964 and disbanded at the end of 1969. They are regarded as the greatest Australian pop band of the 1960s, echoing the Beatles' success in Britain, and were the first Australian rock and roll act to score an international pop hit with their 1966 single "Friday on My Mind". Other hits such as Sorry and She's so fine. Two members rhythm guitarist George Young and lead guitarist Harry Vanda went on to write and produce some of Australia's top hits in the famous music company "Alberts". They encouraged a band forming and interviewed guitarists and George Young famously stated to Harry "my two little brothers Malcolm and Angus are better than these". Angus I think was 16 and apparently a amazing guitarist. Australian ACDC was born and went on to release the worlds second biggest selling album of all time (Thriller being no. 1). Vanda and Young produced ACDC's first 6 albums with Alberts and also wrote songs like international hit Love is in the air + many many more hits you would know. They are very famous and influential in the music industry to this day. Stevie Wright went down hill. He is famous for 2 other things. 1. Drugs and alcohol abuse and it's long term effects and 2. His Australian Anthem "Evie" ian Australian rock song released as a single in 1974. It was written by Harry Vanda and George Young. It has been suggested that it is the first 11-minute song parts (1,2,3) to chart at #1 anywhere in the world.[1]. The song "evie" even demands it's own page on wikipaedia, not the artist stevie, the actual song. I think the most memorable performance of it was on the steps of the opera house in 1979 and it is on film (see link). He had been clean for 2 years before this performance (he had been on smack for years and famously was a patient in Chelmsford (1976) to come clean where he suffered brain damage with deep sleep therapy and ECT. The Easybeats front man was one of a number of former patients to give evidence at a royal commission into the Pennant Hills hospital, after 24 patients died following deep sleep therapy and a further 19 committed suicide within a year of treatment. The opera house performance was outstanding performance. I was there. He opened and he held us all spellbound, when he sang part two; there was silence. There was 200 000 people there and there was silence. It was a strange experience. 200 000 people held captive by this small energetic man. At the end of part 2 all of us chimed in the final chorus. I will never forget that day. Evie has been my favourite song since I was 13. I feel every Australian needs to hear Evie at some time so I hope you watch the link. If you listen it is a complete and tragic story-Evie dies That was it. Now it was down hill for Stevie Stevie's decline was amazing. He apparently swapped a heavy smack addition for 2 bottles of southern comfort a day for years. He was diagnosed with kosicoffs syndrome prior to his death and in a nursing home (but he did get out). But the physical change. OMG, OMG. Have a look at the two men in the clips you will NOT believe they are the same person. The performance in 1979, compare this to the man you see in Australian story 2012. This is an awful thing to be famous for. Poor Stevie. There you have it. The story in a nut shell. RIP Stevie. Thank you for 5 decades of intense entertainment. You were a very talented man who brought a lot of joy and inspiration to rock musicians and music fans the world over. Enjoy that great gig in the heavens, sir!
I was 7 when this concert happened. Remember falling in love with this song the first time I heard it & have been in love with it ever since. No words, lots of tears, goose bumps & heart explosions when watching this, every time. What a fucking song!!! Has to be one of the greatest songs ever written. No words are good enough to truly describe Stevie’s performance. And have passed the love I have for this song onto my daughter, who when she was 8, one of my fondest memories is her & me singing to this at the top of our lungs in my car, she knew every single word. Every time I watch this, I cannot even comprehend how good it is. And I believe the reason why this & other things Stevie did were legendary is because he was a tortured soul, a deep & passionate feeler. If he wasn’t, it wouldn’t be as good. Look at all the brilliant artists this world has seen - Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Vincent Van Gough, Stevie Wright, Bon Scott, Jimi Hendrix, Micheal Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain etc, etc. They created amazing things that came from their tortured souls. I think Stevie was here for as long as he was as meant to be & he gave to the world what he was meant to. He was meant to be here for a short, bright time & leave a mark! And he did. So I’m not going to say what a waste like others. Having Stevie for as long as we did wasn’t a waste at all. And how his star still shines bright & always will. That’s not a life wasted at all. Thank you Stevie for the gift of you to this world. You’ll never be forgotten❤️❤️

I can happily say I was there.whole day was mind blowing
That was some of the best 11 minutes of my life. The pain, the love, the emotion, a tortured messiah. Love you forever Stevie
Ahhh….the 70s man! I’m glad I lived through those years. A lot of Aussie bands and performers were way ahead of their time….
Amazing, almost said "Awesome" but that word is reserved for the One and Only Yeshua! Stevie was truly a legend, also was such a nice guy, last I saw him he remembered the last time we met and hugged me like a long lost brother. Love you mate! It was an honour to know you!!
Just about the greatest 12min 45 secs in OZ music!
Part 3 “as proud as a man could ever hope to be” fist in the air, raspy voice, perfection! Goosebumps
"Let your hair hang down."
R.I.P. Stevie Wright, 1947-2015.

2SM Concert of the Decade. It was my privilege to introduce the one and only Stevie at the biggest audience he'd played!
+Trevor Sinclair I was 17 when I went along with a group of school friends. The best concert I ever attended and Stevie was freakin awesome!
+Trevor Sinclair Me too it was 79 with my school mates 16yrs old in our prime & feeling so lucky to be there it was the first time id heard him sing live that was when I knew I was privileged to hear him his voice was amazing
Tracey Andrew Tracey, i was also 16 on the day I saw this amazing performance from the steps to Lady Macquarie‘s Chair with my girlfriends from school.
What year was this concert??
@@the_eminent_Joshua_E_Hrouda pretty sure it was 1979
You wouldn't believe how many times I've watched this over the past week; several times a day, and it makes my hair stand on end and tears well. I've never seen a live performance with such life. I'm addicted, and I'm so angry that I've only just discovered him. I'm making up for lost time... he's not resting in peace, he's killing it elsewhere.
R Phoenix
R Phoenix me too i cant believe i never heard of him till just before he died. canada is so backward
So happy for you guys - and Stevie [his family now], that you have discovered this darling man who has given so much to the music world. All his original '60s fans will welcome you into this amazing timezone with open arms, cos we want his legacy to go on forever.
* I have loved this man and his band mates from the Easybeats since 1964. They were Australia's Beatles, writing all their own music. While the world had 'Beatlemania', we had 'Easyfever'. l still get goosebumps every time l listen to him, or the band.
* Here is an EASYBEAT PLAYLIST l have put tog of all their's and Stevie's history :-th-cam.com/play/PLo0tzmnlxcWk3aQ8DANXuLbKiE9xR89G6.html
* We also have a closed group Fan Page on Facebook, called STEVIE WRIGHT and the EASYBEATS, if you would like to join.
* But be prepared Stevie's life became quite tragic - but miraculously, he was cared for throughout most of it, and we had him around a lot longer than we expected.
* The amount of love in Australia for this amazing entertainer is awesome, and it's perfectly lovely to have you all, on board.
Without Stevie, there would have been no Bon Scott
@@jannafanta5707 Not just Canada, Janna. Australia had so much good music in the 60s and 70s and the rest of the world was hardly aware of our existence on the map, let alone wanting to promote our music. Incidentally the Easybeats were our 1st Rock Band to have an international hit - with 'Friday On My Mind' . Click on my Channel/icon and at the bottom of my front page you will find a lot of great Australian music from the 60s till now. Here's one of my favourites:-

What a performance! Stevie Wright and his band play a 12 minute long song and absolutely blow the audience away! Who else could pull that off? Aussie music at it's absolute best!
I saw Tony Mitchell and Alan Sandow from Sherbet playing as well in that clip
I was at this concert in 79.. What a loss to Australian music RIP Stevie Wright.
Love you Stevie- you deserved a better ending
John Paul Young was singing Evie (part two) at Stevie Wrights funeral this morning. He did a great job. So like the way he sang back then, you would think he was channelling him.
A mere 700 k views only after 8 years ? Just proves quality does not equal quantity
Australia's greatest ever song/s
A pretty cool moment in Australian rock
Stevie fighting off his demons & giving the crowd a great show with some of the best local muso's of their time.
+Garry Matthews Yes I thought so, thanks for confirming Garry. I thought I was seeing things.
Bloody awesome one of Australia’s greatest ever frontmen - Stevie and Bon Scott !
I wish I was in that crowd that witnessed a surreal event. Bless you Stevie and all your wonderful musicians
Still gives me goosebumps after all of these years. Fucking masterpiece!
i met him in the 90s..he was homeless n living in a mini minor i think at the time.. he gave me free tix to see him... i was absolutely floored he would do this.... nicest bloke evr n nailed it in the nite! sad he let himself get into the state he was... but still made people smile inspite of his demons n not carry on like self absorbed arseholes.. .. thats the real talent these guys have...the rest is just showbiz... RIP Stevie
Still do.
Amazing story. I believe every word of it.
Don't know if there has to be this story telling about our greatest rock frontman. Who knows who really knew him and honestly who cares. Listen to the music of this genius. That's what matters now
WOW Gabby!
What an amazing and heart wrenching story you have to tell.
Louis Lozano I didn't know he was homeless - so sad
When my Daughter was born,I was on the way to pick her Mother and her up from the hospital and part 2 of this amazing song was playing.I was in tears when the line of him saying `` I want to thank you now,for giving me this child,so much a part of me and you``.This song is a pure classic.I still love hearing it over and over .

One of the best singles that I bought (here in Belgium) when I was a teenager (born in '58). Never knew until recently that he was the same voice of "Friday on my mind". Great performance, still one of my favorite songs (and I like lots of songs)...
R.I.P Stevie. Was an 11 yr old with my cousins at rocktober, never, ever, ever forgot that show. Then I got to buy you beers in Penrith, as young man. You will live in my heart, and Evie still made 36 on the top 1000 rock songs on Triple M this year. WTG.
Wow. Really? Number 36 and it had been 42 years. Well impressive!
And Friday on my Mind was voted Australian No 1 recording, of all time by some mob
I am now 59 and this still gives me goosebumps after so many years. What a legendary song and singer!!
Shoot, tears in my eyes - even after all these years. He did it to me again. Love you Stevie Wright.
I was at this concert in 79.. What a loss to Australian music RIP Stevie Wright.
I was on those steps that day. He owned that stage. RIP Stevie
I was near the mixing desk. This was incredible, a performance I’ll never forget. My friends and I were spellbound. Thank you so much Stevie Wright.
Max Merritt was on late as the highlight but
Will never forget that day
I was there at the concert with my older sisters. I was about 11 or twelve. First concert I went to.
Two people on that stage had departed, Ian Miller on guitar died in 09. He was a beautiful soul. I hope Stevie & Ian are rocking on up there in the cosmos along with all the other great muso's we have lost
I cry every time I hear the song
so good, cant replicate this anymore

Think that was Alan Sandow from Sherbet. Great in Part 3 wasn't he🤩
Looks like Sherbet and Cheetah backing him.

If you listen it is a complete and tragic story-Evie dies
That was it. Now it was down hill for Stevie
Stevie's decline was amazing. Hope you enjoyed the reading you can tell I am a true fan. Cheers Rob

I think he was famous for more than just his decline. He was extremely talented, and if you listen to his peers, really on the verge of cracking it majorly huge.
Great comment
All the hits they had in Australia before the went to England was written by stevie and George. They should have left it that way
Leave him alone.

Damn. Bawling! This is such a beautiful, sad, love song....RIP Stevie. One of the best. Tragic waste....
What a legend! One of the greatest songs ever written. 🤸♂️
RIP Stevie ...Thank you for the music ....
So beautifully said Kathleen. He was a tortured soul. Thsts why he was so great. Love Stevie to bits.
I watch this video daily. This song is amazing in its structure and the performance of it by everyone on that stage is so damn great.

Because he was trying to break into a house only 4 days after he was released. And back on drugs with in a month after his release.
So blessed to be a child of the 60's and I was there on the day.

George Young and Harry Vanda wrote this just for Stevie. And Malcolm Young played guitar at this concert, it shows how much his peers cared about him.
Sorry that is incorrect. Malcolm Young played at the 1974 Opera House gig. This clip is the 1979 gig. Which Malcolm was not at.
