I've been following Kaze Emanuar for a few years and he seems to be genuinely a great person, apart being a great programmer. Looking forward for you two to collaborate!
Pause the game and there is an option disable the 30fps limit, then it looks even more impressive... not constant 60fps but almost. And even better on the turbo mister core I imagine.
The smooth, fast framerate and crisp textures almost make it feel more like Super Mario Sunshine. It's a fun bit of exploration! The final release will be incredible!
This is definitely a mod / ROM that will put the N64 core to the test… impressive that it works on the N64 core! Curious too if Robert implemented the CPU cache control instructions Kaze documented in a recent video?
I hope, so greatly, that Kaze shares his findings with the open source community and ignites a renewal in N64 development. Just like 32x Doom has for the Mega Drive.
I loved the thought about how we might discard old hardware too soon. Just another way I hadn't thought of of how time constraints in development put into place because of the search for profit definetly hurt the medium
This is insane VGE, looks so frikin good, will wait until this is release ready so not to spoil it, but this looks like a real SM64 sequel, actually, it kind of looks like a SM64 sequel as if RareWare had made it, which might just be the ulimate compliment. Love the soundtrack samples too, I see it's only just a small tech demo, not planned for a full release, but it's still really cool, would love to see a full release like this one day though, so much potential for a N64 SM64 sequel, as the gameplay still holds up beautifully, even more so in this improved version of the engine.
so there is a graphics options in the pause menu, and you can enable and disable dithering and antialiasing, switch to widescreen, unlock framerate, show fps, dude i would have been really interested in you showing that, and how the n64 core handle all of that
Excellent stuff. I’d like to see more fan games of Mario Kart 64. I’ve seen ROM hack type cartridges of for it for sale for example that allow CPU to use red shells etc, I think that function was hidden in the code that Nintendo decided against in the final version. But yeah, I’d love to see some fan enhancements in general for Mario Kart on the N64🤘🏻
@ Yeah that would be great. I have so much nostalgia for that game, it’s probably my fave in the series. Spent many a night in my youth playing fierce 4 player sessions with friends round🤪
Every time I see these hacks and tech demos I wonder how things would've worked out differentky. Hindsight is clear and the folks saying the n64 was powerful for the time werent kidding around
You can tell the SDK and docs were very unfinished for N64 because Nintendo themselves made a ton of mistakes and poor choices and they co-developed the platform
I love how every time someone in the engineering community makes a giant effort to improve legacy code for software, there are bunch of people trying to downplay their absolute excellence. Even companies like take 2 and red Italian plumber have no regard for engineering effort (emulation) condemning it but using it for their own products (which doesn’t even render at native resolution). And then people wonder why reverse engineering, software and hardware emulation and homebrew applications don’t get good in an acceptable development time.
@@VideoGameEsoterica well firstly he’s done so much work to the code. How hard would it be at this point to put together a new character? Secondly while he’s going for a Mario aesthetic he’s nowhere close to a Mario art style. Like not at all. Which is fine. At this point just do your own thing. I live Mario 64. It’s in my top five. But this deserves to be its own thing. I’ve been following his project for years.
@@VideoGameEsotericaWell....he is a shunky boy. But he is crazy athletic so I would assume Mario is like one of those "big" strongman athletes. Big boys but fitter than most men who ever existed
it's great, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Mario64 was made in less than 2 years by a couple dozen guys at most. In the next 4-5 years they'd release countless other classics as well. They were absolutely on fire. Kaze makes cool stuff, but has no time constraints and works within the pre-established theme that nintendo invented.
I don't think anybody is judging them by the same standard. 3D game programming at the time was literally in its infancy, the machines they used to make it had CPUS barely pushing 100mhz, and the development tools were extremely primitive compared to today.
I've been following Kaze Emanuar for a few years and he seems to be genuinely a great person, apart being a great programmer.

I offered to help test for MiSTer and compatibility on Twitter. Always happy to check things for devs for the FPGA community
cant wait for vanilla Mario 64 at 60FPS on og hardware
One of these days!
Wow! Looking forward to seeing more of this. Their work is always so impressive.
Kaze gets performance out of N64 nobody ever knew was possible
Pause the game and there is an option disable the 30fps limit, then it looks even more impressive... not constant 60fps but almost. And even better on the turbo mister core I imagine.
I may show this on the next expo of turbo core
Imagine seeing this on the N64 back in the day! It would have been mind blowing!
Seriously the performance here feels like N64 for a “N64 Pro” refresh
N64 was already mind blowing us though! First 3d game we ever saw was mario64! But I agree mind blown, and mind blown in 2025!
Now imagine this quality back when Super Mario 64 released haha
it looks outstanding !! so impressive !!
So impressive. Makes it look like it’s running on an “N64 pro”
Happy to see a kaze game on here
I showed one before during MiSTer testing. I will be showing more N64 fan games in 2025 on the core too. Feel free to recommend some!
This year is off to a mad start! ST-V and now this!
I’ll be talking about STV soonish again. I’ve been helping a TINY bit
Kaze outdid himself again!!
Haha he always does
The smooth, fast framerate and crisp textures almost make it feel more like Super Mario Sunshine. It's a fun bit of exploration! The final release will be incredible!
Yep can’t wait to see this all finished and ready to enjoy :)
Nintendo should’ve done this years ago I don’t know why they didn’t develop another Mario 64 sequel
It’s time for Mario 128
This is definitely a mod / ROM that will put the N64 core to the test… impressive that it works on the N64 core!
Curious too if Robert implemented the CPU cache control instructions Kaze documented in a recent video?
The core has addressed the 9th bit for awhile I believe (edit: you said cache haha…no I don’t believe so)
I hope, so greatly, that Kaze shares his findings with the open source community and ignites a renewal in N64 development. Just like 32x Doom has for the Mega Drive.
I think you’ll see a lot more N64 fun this year
Just imagine supermario sunshine in the N64 in it’s full glory.
I’d love to see a Sunshine demake on N64
This looks rad as hell!
It really is
I loved the thought about how we might discard old hardware too soon. Just another way I hadn't thought of of how time constraints in development put into place because of the search for profit definetly hurt the medium
Yes we truly never get to see the very top end of console hardware as it’s always replaced just before that moment it seems
This is insane VGE, looks so frikin good, will wait until this is release ready so not to spoil it, but this looks like a real SM64 sequel, actually, it kind of looks like a SM64 sequel as if RareWare had made it, which might just be the ulimate compliment. So far it’s a ton of fun and remember OG Return to Yoshi’s Island exists too. Just not this impressive
so there is a graphics options in the pause menu, and you can enable and disable dithering and antialiasing, switch to widescreen, unlock framerate, show fps, dude i would have been really interested in you showing that, and how the n64 core handle all of that
Maybe I’ll do a follow up in a special vid
Really like kaze vids they always make me excited for the future of homebrew on the n64.🎉
Yes N64 def needs more homebrew. Hopefully 2025 is the year
did u try dis on the turbo core? or the regular? or both? not that it would matter much... seems like it would run at 60fps either way 🙂
OG but it should work fine on both

Or new tracks. That would be fun too
@ Yeah that would be great. I have so much nostalgia for that game, it’s probably my fave in the series. Spent many a night in my youth playing fierce 4 player sessions with friends round🤪
A solid 4 player MK session can’t be beaten
@ Agreed!
Whoa! You can say that again VGE. That really is impressive. Amazing to say the least. 8^)
Feels like a way more powerful N64
Now THIS is retro. XD
Haha
This is amazing! 😍
It’s legit awesome
@VideoGameEsoterica I agree!!!
Every time I see these hacks and tech demos I wonder how things would've worked out differentky. Hindsight is clear and the folks saying the n64 was powerful for the time werent kidding around

This looks like a very western version of Mario 64. But very impressive gameplay!
Just a diff aesthetic

I don’t get it either
This could easily pass as a Dreamcast game
Gets close to it
This should be a completely original platformer.
Curious as to why you think that?
It will be, actually. It's going to be realeased some time in the future.

I'm not lying when I say RTYI is one of my most anticipated games. It's the SM64 sequel we never got.
So far so fun. Can’t wait to see what comes next
🎉🎉🎉
Another awesome new game to check out. Love it
the game im getting an everdrive64 for my analogue 3D, shit better ship on time
Haha it’s analogue. It’s gonna be delayed. I have one on order too
@VideoGameEsoterica that sucks, my first analogue console was the duo and they totally bungled mine in shipping
Lets not undermine what this dev has done. He doesnt have a team with a big budget either.
I wasn’t? Lol
@VideoGameEsoterica sorry I meant to reply to another comment. You do great work. Keep it up.
Haha makes way more sense
The technicals are cool, but the Nintendo trademarks suck. I'm really tired of seeing the 'walking diabetes', to be quite frank.
lol who says Mario has the betus?
@@VideoGameEsotericaWell....he is a shunky boy. But he is crazy athletic so I would assume Mario is like one of those "big" strongman athletes. Big boys but fitter than most men who ever existed
Sooo… how does one actually get their hands on some of these N64 homebrews/mods that work on a standard machine?
See description

I’m not knocking Nintendo. I’m just saying a dev in the modern era can get more out of the hardware than devs could back then
I don't think anybody is judging them by the same standard. 3D game programming at the time was literally in its infancy, the machines they used to make it had CPUS barely pushing 100mhz, and the development tools were extremely primitive compared to today.
Exactly. That’s why I was clear in the vid; not knowing devs in the 90s and referencing how many new tools and knowledge are available today
@VideoGameEsoterica it's not running on the n64, it's running emulated!
It’s running on real hardware and on FPGA
