The loop tends to null out signals that are perpendicular to it, so it is possible that you could have had an even better RX on some of those weaker ones by rotating it.
Colin, Thanks for another great video! I probably don’t need the loop because I am in a low noise area here in rural South Carolina. But thanks for the link to the George Smart page. Wow! What great collection of resources and fun stuff. I saved the link in my ham radio favorites. 73 and Happy Christmas de N9XY Michael.
Thanks Michael, been a crazy year with the day job. Not much radio time. This will help me enjoy the lower bands at night when I have some spare time. Cheers 👍
Nice example and demonstration of loop Colin!!! Simple, effective, cheap and affordable antenna to any ham with skillful hands!! As I start 40 years ago, (preferebly monoband loop) still amaze me during TX & RX. 👍73,S51X
I built a mag loop about 6 months ago, my off center fed dipole, runs a noise floor of about S 7-S10, I can't remember exactly what the noise floor was on the loop was, but it was much less than the OCFD, it tunes from 40 to 15 meters. This was a good video for those looking to try one thank you Colin. 73's🎙KD9OAM🎧
Great results shown there. I suppose that I am lucky that I don't have much around me in respect to anything that can produce noise, and of course hope it stays that way.
I built a 900 foot long Beverage receive-only antenna for use on 40, 80, and 160 meters. It turned out to be very good at resisting corona discharge during a thunderstorm that rendered a 40m Yagi useless on receive. Signal levels were lower than on the Yagi, but corona noise was eliminated.
Well done Colin. You're not the first person to crash a website 😂 🙈 Great A/B test. I've gone from a long wire to a multi band delta loop at home, where I'm surrounded by telephone and electric poles. Made a huge difference on receive. My old ft-847 only has one HF antenna connection though.
I’ve been using a Wellbrook loop for years and on 60m it has been a godsend. I have some noise on 40m but the s/n is night and day over a wire antenna. Ideally you need a radio with a dedicated RX ant port. Loops in general are quieter than Marconi antennae.
@@MM0OPXFieldRadio I think that all new radio's should be fitted with a dedicated RX port. It was a huge part of my dismissing a lot of Icom radio's out of my buying equation. I wasn't keen on the 101 so ended up going for a second-hand TS-990.
Well done colinn, ive always used a vert on tx, and 40m dipole 3m high for rx, no noise now. One ant socket on the rig, no probs, made a tx/rx ant switch, works great. 73 mate.
Very good. I suffered from broadband internet noise from my telephone wire (not in use) which Ofcom investigated and said it had probably corroded and radiating.for many years and h.f. was killed for me with S8 noise 160m to 20m except 60m. I lengthened my 40m inverted vee for 60m. I made an indoor magnetic loop to null out the noise and that worked for me. The noise went down considerably when it was changed to fibre optic cable. G4GHB.
I have a S3 or 6 noise depending on the band and etc. I have been looking for a receiver loop and my K4 has. Receive antenna input. Noting is perfect but hearing someone many listening much better.
Build a air choke from coax. 6 meter coax around a botle or whatever. NOT the turns are importent. The 6 meter coax are. You need create reactence. Good Luck. Pa5dek.
Blimey. Maybe I need to get one! I have an MLA 30 on a shortwave receiver I have in my other QTH - hadn't considered using a loop for general 40m receive. What about 80m? My main QTH is very noisy on 80m.
Thats difficult for me to with the space I have here. I recommend you look at the work done by HB9VQQ. He has done many experiments comparing different types.

I have tried but didnt notice much difference so far. I know it has a lot to do with the design of your loop.

Super demonistration of the loop. Working really well. Those clamps for attaching to the mast are very nice. Another great video. Thank you
I forgot I had them but now glad I bought them, 73.

Definitely. A full size antenna in a quiet location will outperform this but no chance here.
Awesome! I received an lz1aq loop amplifier and some tubing, just need some time off work to build it.
Its well worth the effort.
Hello Colin,
nice to see and hear you again.

Thank you Mario. Nice to be posting again.

I made a tx/rx auto ant switch which will solve your problem.
Excellent Fraser. As Brian says, you need a dedicated swich and you can use different ant's for TX and RX.
@@MM0OPXFieldRadio yeah, I hadn't thought of that. Will look into it.
@@brianfields4479 good idea Brian, cheers.

Totally agree. Luckily the 590 has this feature.

is your switch RF sensing or triggered via the rig?
@youtubeaccount931 triggered by the rig
Thanks mate. Thats the plan, get a vertical up for TX now.
I am sure you can also use that new SDR-switch for the same purpose of having a dedicated receive antenna input.
Yes, you can. I will do this when I eventually use a dedicated SRD RX.
Very good.

60m is a killer for me to. I don't use it as my 590 is stil locked. I need to wideband it for this.
Great job as usual Colin! Would be interesting to see if there was any difference whilst rotating the loop
I haven't seen a noticeable difference......yet. watch this space.

Agree. This isnt a miracle but helps greatly.
good video.
is it only for 40 Meter band or does it cover all the HF Band ?
It covers all of HF but best below 20m IMO. It will however depend on your own situation.
Great video woprks a charm!!!. Where do I buy that strap you have holding the balun to the pole?

I've tried GM3SEK chokes in the past without much luck. These have wayyy more choking.
Colin could i enquire where you got the black ratchet clamps you using to fix to the main pole were from please?
wow what a difference. having similar noise problems in vienna.
This or similar is well worth a go then.
It's noise on 20-6 that's the issue for me. What's the answer there?
Let me know if you find out. Fortunately those bands are ok for me.
@@MM0OPXFieldRadio at the moment it's DNR on my FTDX10. Which isn't bad to be fair.

It works great on 80m but I didn't show it as I cant do a comparison to a full size antenna. Works well on 160m too.

Thanks Paul. I wonder If I heard you a few nights ago talking to a GW on 40m? Low with me but the loop pulled the signal out.
No not me sadly. I've not been on air for months. Hopefully I will be on over Christmas and New year.
