    Buying a motherboard can be a daunting task for new builders, so in this video I break it down on three skill levels: basic compatibility, features & extras, and components & build quality.
    *UPDATE AS OF 5/19/2020 -- AMD just announced that they WILL be adding support for 4000-series CPUs to B450 and X470 motherboards. They will need to set up a 1-way BIOS upgrade that will drop support for some 1st-gen Ryzen CPUs, and details are still forthcoming, but it's great news!*

    Hey Paul, I just wanna say thank you. One day I thought to myself that my MacBook Air wasn’t doing it for me in basic performance to even play Ravenfield so I went out to look for a gaming laptop. I looked around and found nothing I liked so I looked for a tutorial to see how difficult it was to build a PC. Yours was the first I found and you were the one who got me to now have my fist custom PC. You are a legend and I hope you can inspire many others to build like you did for me. Awesome video btw

    This is a great video. There are so many reviews of specific items of hardware, which are extremely useful, but there's definitely a gap of videos about the general principles you should apply when picking a part. I'm planning on doing my first build this summer (hoping stock availability and prices go back to pre-Covid levels some time soon) and this was very useful.
    One thing I am struggling with right now is figuring out how to determine how much cooling/airflow is needed for your CPU/GPU combination, and how to tell apart the quality of different power supplies (as well as determine what wattage you actually need). A "3 levels of skill" style video on cooling and PSUs would be so useful to me and I'm sure many others.

    I look at the whole set-up on a main board. I look at the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth version, number and speed of the lans, number of m.2 slots. I also look at the quality of the sound section, and whether or not that there is onboard video.
    While I don't use liquid cooling, it is an option on the control headers that I look at in the event that air cooling is not enough.
    RGB lighting control is a plus if I just want some distractions.
    I usually use top of the line mb's. They tend to last longer and give better options with the extras I look for and use. I don't always use the latest and greatest mb's. Previous versions are usually the best buy for the money with the options that I like.
    Good video tutorial. Thank you.

      It depends on what kind of build. It's i'm going ITX. I always pick the case first. Since it's the most restrictive build type. With ITX upgradability is usually limited to what case you have. For mATX or ATX builds the case is less important.

    Excellent video, clear and informative, useful for both the the beginners and this experienced engineer. (I designed and built my first computer 58 years ago at 13. Most of my design experience has been unrelated to PCs, dedicated realtime control designs the Pegasus telemetry and guidance board. It's been 30 years since I last built a Windows PC from parts, so I don't keep up with it until I need it.) This video strikes a near perfect balance, avoiding both the dumbed-down ditch one one side and the assuming-they-already-know-the-jargon ditch on the other. Thanks, great job.

    I feel like you missed a very important part of choosing a motherboard - connectivity options.
    For many people, 6 USB ports might not be enough, especially if one of them is Type-C. Some keyboards nowadays need two USB ports, some headsets need one, a USB soundcard or an audio interface need one. Add a webcam, a printer, a capture card, an external hard drive - and you might get overrun by things that need a USB port. Sure, those can be added via PCIe cards, but this is often more expensive than just buying a board with more ports and can lead to weird compatibility issues, especially with devices that fully utilize high-speed ports' bandwidth (webcams, capture cards and VR equipment are the worst offenders).
    M.2 slots often get too little attention. Some people might take advantage of multiple and/or high bandwidth LAN. Thunderbolt 3 is also is incredibly useful.
    All of this helps to show why the crowd favorite B450 Tomahawk is hugely overrated. To me, rather pricey an ATX board with 6 USB ports and 1 M.2 slot is a joke. Its mATX sister B450 Mortar is not only cheaper, but has 8 USB ports and 2 M.2 slots, yet nobody recommends it.

    • @termiguin1
      @termiguin1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hard agree on the Mortar MAX, the tomahawk has no useful advantages over the mortar. SLI and Crossfire are dead, so mATX should be just as if not more relevant than ATX, yet it's the other way around strangely.

    • @Matt513131
      @Matt513131 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A cheap USB hub easily solves the issue of not enough USB ports, but he does also mention that different motherboards will have fewer USB or sata ports briefly at 9:00. I'd assume M.2 slots would also fall under this umbrella when looking at what connectivity options a motherboard has.
      The Tomahawk is often recommended over the Mortar because it's an ATX board, which will give you more room to work with, and also because the VRM is better for people interested in overclocking. Not many people use more than one M.2, and as mentioned before USB ports aren't really a deciding factor for most people.
