I hope you'll be taking a closer look at those workstation motherboards, perhaps making editing workstations for yourself and Joe - one Intel, one AMD - and comparing the two.
When they talk about computers getting smaller they're talking about the circuits inside the chip not the physical package. If you increase the core counts faster than the process shrinking then the physical chip will be bigger to accommodate the increased core count even if the physical wires are smaller. Gpu's are almost completely dependent on multi core scaling since Dennard's scaling is dead.
I assume because of physics of it, things can only be so small or so efficient then you have heating, the more work it does the hotter it gets so having parts small but not able to handle the heat makes it pointless
As @randipoling635 mentioned; it has a lot to do with aesthetics. As we've seen, the 5090 FE is a very reasonably sized card and still pulls by far the most power...
Even if the FE cooler performs worse than the big ones, I think they designed the FE around AI farms, where multiple GPUs get stacked on each other closely, essentially making a big air duct.
Paul please don't call these 2 slot cards, they're 2.5 or, at minimum, 2+. Calling them 2 slot cards normalises the stupidity of the overbuilds coming from the board partners this generation. The MSRP is already expensive, building massive coolers as a normal thing is just to justify the partners charging ridiculous premiums...
I agree with you, and I'll be more specific in the future about cards that push past two slots. The "SFF ready" designation is an Nvidia thing which you probably know, but it does allow for 50mm/2.5 slot thick cards. In reviewing this video I wish I had said 2+ for those.
@@paulshardware It's understandable, it wasn't exactly a quiet, stress-free environment. On I side note, I really appreciated seeing Joe in the background of a Hardware Unboxed video still taking COVID seriously and wearing a mask.
Giant coolers are in no way "MSRP Hype". My 4090 OCs to a stable 3100mhz (Almost 50% over base) while staying below 60c at 575watts. That's insanely good performance and way more then claimed by manufacturer. Considering prior gens needed 5-600$ water cooler setups to reach those temps, paying 150$ for the stock cooler to be equally as good is a big saving.
I honestly been happy with my gigabyte cards the past 3 generations from the 20-30-40 series now. Eagle OC is my 4080 and had the white v 3080. All stayed cooled and never had to overclock them at all with use. I’ve seen a lot of bad or mid reviews from consumers. These cards I don’t have issues with if they are the last 5090/5080s left
unfortunately, gigabyte still limits their b850m (mATX) boards to only 2 m.2 slots even though they put 3 on their intel boards. Asrock b850m boards have 3 m.2 slots.
My first thought was: The manufacturers design large coolers cuz they assumed it would be required and now they have to use it despite not being necessary...
I hope they have better looking aesthetics coming soon. I'd love to get a 5090 but I have an white build with the AsRock Tachi White 7900xtx OC and it goes so good with my build.

Gigabytes is training to make the cheapest motherboards possible and sell the for as much as they can get for them. Just about every X870E-X870 B850 is a cut down version of the X670-B650 at almost $100 increase in price for what.

That Z890 extreme board looks wild. It’s crazy how many super high end boards there are for Z890, when it’s such a poor platform. Where’s the AM5 equivalent?!
Lol so "dual slot card" means "less than 3 slots" now, does it? Both cards Paul called "dual slot" were obviously wider than the support bracket with the IO...
it's easy to cut plastic, you get a DIY project for free
The 4090 msrp was 1600 dollars, AIB cards sold for 2000 to 2200 dollars in the shop, so that will give you an idea of how much the 5090 will sell for.
As neat as the 2 slot design is, I also can't help but suspect that the latest space heater unit from nvidia does a less ideal job of distributing the heat to the rest of the room. It'd be nice if they somehow innovated in a big way though. I'm just highly doubtful.
They are at least smart enough to recess the plug a bit unlike some of the other oversized cards. Companies forget case width is a thing. Even my 011d evo xl barely fits a gaming oc card
They need to focus on keeping the performance the same in a smaller package... Like half the size it is now. Then move on to making them faster. The cards are just getting ridiculously big
All these AIBs just make the FE look even better.
I would be waiting for temp/noise/boost testing before glazing the FE's
@@megageek8509 The flow through design + Liquid Metal is probably enough to keep it competitive with cheaper AIB.
Real issue with FE is it’s a low volume product and will be difficult to find in stock.
@@sleepicat could be right. I can’t get FE models in my country anyway but I am interested to see the results because it could change AIB models next gen if it works.
I miss the GPU being on the Card instead of just Geforce RTX
I hope you'll be taking a closer look at those workstation motherboards, perhaps making editing workstations for yourself and Joe - one Intel, one AMD - and comparing the two.
Why aren't graphics cards getting smaller in size despite technological advances?
Becauss that advancement are hitting law of physics wall.
gamers mindset - "Bigger Cooler, Better Card, Oog Oog." ...... Probably.
You were all jostling for position and fighting off Alex from LTT, it's just really easy for it to become normal. Next 3 slots will be the "SFF ready" cards if we don't call them out on it.
There is one thing i will never a criticize an electronic over, which is overkill cooling.
5090 FE is 2 slot, perfect!
Great video, Paul. Hope everyone at home is ok!
I wonder why the 5080 Master has such a recessed power connector, but the 5090 master doesn’t? 🤔
I hope they have better looking aesthetics coming soon. I'd love to get a 5090 but I have an white build with the AsRock Tachi White 7900xtx OC and it goes so good with my build.
The potential of XAI508P is unreal! Excited to see where this goes after watching your video!
Gigabyte has a $350 board with dual 10G networking and dual x16 PCIe Slots in form of B850 Ai Top not bad deal for home servers or VMs.
Great video. Motherboards looking good
I like the slide to hide rgb on those gigabyte cards.
Thanks for the tour :)
In your opinion, XAI508P for $10? 1 year or so?
Video cards have become the new pickup trucks. They just keep getting bigger.
My Sapphire 7900XTX will be and still is Future Proof at least until the price is on these 5000 series drops to an affordable amount ... then i'll do a fresh build
Thank you so much Paul's Hardware because I finally understand why xx90 cards are bigger than their high-end and mid-range brothers. BECAUSE OF THE FUCKING COOLER SIZE!!!
I literally had no freaking idea I'm not even kidding. That being said the 5090 is monstrous!!
The smaller size of the FE is like 90% of the reason I'm even considering the upgrade.
I have the Aorus 4080 Super Master and the cooling is great! It's massive! Most of the time it stays under 60c. I love the look and performance. I'll stick with Gigabyte for the GPUs. The 5k series looks great. Can't wait to see the benchmarks.
Can't wait for the GPUs ending up as cubes because all the heat it generates.
Sure a bigger cooler is always better, but it just gives them an excuse to hike the price to a ridiculous amount.
I realy woudl love to see GPU in the style of the fabled RTX 50/4090 4 slots having a long thin board under the cooler which is dual flowthrough with the powerconecto at the end and no longer on the side where you have to trapeze it over the collers and bowing around the world.
I'm just not feeling that Gigabyte doesn't come with an AORUS ICE version of the graphics cards. I have a 4080 Super AERO, but I want it to say AORUS!
Thank Goodness I got a B650M asrock board...instead of waiting to see barely no Micro ATX boards from the 800 series motherboards...
I hope your house is ok!!!!
I find the founders designs more interesting. I really want a smaller build with a 5090 and a 9800x3d 😂
By the pace of information being released we will know everything by the time the 6090 is snnoinced
What's better the Aorus 4090 OC or the Aorus 4090 Master ?
How/where can we buy these gpu stands! Will be awesome for my gpu when I upgrade!
How are they going to cool more wattage with a smaller cooler.
Gigabytes is training to make the cheapest motherboards possible and sell the for as much as they can get for them. Just about every X870E-X870 B850 is a cut down version of the X670-B650 at almost $100 increase in price for what.
Sorry if this has been answered already - Do we know when AIB's can announce their RTX 50 series pricing? Hopefully it's before the 30th. I'd love to know how much I'm spending before I camp out overnight at my local Micro Center!
I live in the North, and it frequently get very cold outside. My desk sits right next to a window, with my PC basically being right in front of it. As long as it's not precipitating, is it safe to open my window and let the cold air blow through my PC? Do you think this will help lower temps?
my question: do i need 500 KW power connection to my computer now or are we still in green energy mode?
Sooo no white 5090? :(
Why are cards getting longer and not thicker???
Definitely liking the water cooled 5090!
Isn't the 9070xt the 7900xt successor? Because that had 20GB.
Technically maybe, if we pretend the monster chiplet they were working wasn't being worked on.
Can't do that now because AMD themselves have talked about that monstrosity at this point.
Yes it is…
AMD learnt their lesson. Playing the more VRAM game cost them future sales.
Any prices or release dates for the after market cards
They are suing the trend 'Bigger is better' to fool the people as expected.
The water blocked one should be cheaper since it has materials
I love that RTX 5090 Waterforce WB card !!! Very premium !! 8:20
dang that eagle card looks sick too
Hi Paul. I just heard that case manufacturers are putting a premium price on their tower cases.
4090 like performance with a boatload of dlss I be willing to bet the retail price of a 5090 that as soon as you turn the dlss off the 5070 will perform more like a 4070 just a little more efficient
Thanks Paul
If the rtx 5090 is a slot card my guess would be they're using the 4090 cooler type on the 5090 to save money or to push better cooling.
Pretty sure the diagram they showed is not the same as the 40 series cooler. (Not that that couldn't be smoke and mirrors but doubtful 🤔)
It just shares the outward aesthetic
