    Honestly, I played the PS1 version until death back in the day, since despite SNK strong presence in Brazil in the 90's (we had some arcade releases with portuguese language option), I never saw the Arcade version of Real Bout Special (but the Original Real Bout was hot at some arcade houses). And I was blown my mind when I saw the game boy version. Takara did a good job (with some exceptions) on the Nettou series.

    great subject this week for BoTP. I've always considered the PlayStation release to be a sort of pseudo-sequel/upgrade type of game since so many things were changed or altered. It never really felt like a straight port to me. Not to mention some special moves(and combos by extension) end up causing some slowdown here and there. I do like the Obari style animation used, though.
    That Gameboy port looks good. despite the reworking, the character sprites still look distinctive, and you can tell who's who. The audio is fantastic as well.

      The GB port is surprisingly playable. Takara really got their act together with the later Neo ports to the GameBoy.

    • @williammcguire130
      @williammcguire130 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean there's nothing pseudo about it. It's the sequel to the RBFF games on the Neo Geo with a new crime lord who tries to take over Southtown by hypnotizing Geese's organization and a new main character in Alfred. It's funny how physically similar the new villain is to Garou's Kain-- they definitely found a "type" for bad guys.

    The Game Boy version looks and plays just as great as its NeoGeo Pocket Color version. This is something Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games often never got right on Game Boy, to be good and not turn to crap.

    The Saturn and NEO GEO CD ports are pretty sweet. And I have to say that also like the PS1 port despite the missing animations.

  • @RetrOrigin
    @RetrOrigin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To be fair, the PS1 version is more of a spinoff than a port (hence the Dominated Mind subtitle) SNK purposely changed many characters completely (Blue Mary for example is more of a grappler) and the game plays in a very different way. Think of it as a Turbo edition of sorts (just like in SF II where Champion edition and Turbo are completely different games despite having almost the exact same graphics) It's actually a pretty good game on its own as a stand alone game.
    As for the Saturn version, didn't know those glitches were in the original game. I only owned a bootleg copy back in the 90's and always thought the bugs were only in the bootleg lol.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, they're present in the real game. I was using the real disk on my Saturn. It actually turns out that the intro runs too slow on the Saturn by a good 7 seconds. I sped it up for the video comparison just to keep things looking good. Maybe later revisions of the game were fixed but the original release is bugged.

  • @ravagingwolverine
    @ravagingwolverine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I remember reading about Dominated Mind back in the day. The existence of it is odd. Certainly, the PS1 could have handled the plane system. I wonder if they did it to cut out the unique sprites for each character related to that. Or perhaps they considered it an experiment with the series to see how a regular, single-plane setup worked for the series and how it would be received. Regardless, a fun comparison. I like to see how the Neo Geo ports turned out as there's more going on than is immediately visible. Too bad RAM was so limited back in those days.

    • @OM19_MO79
      @OM19_MO79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The PS1 couldn't handle the necessary additional frames of animation to have the plane system, that's why they stripped it off and made some tweaks to compensate while they were at it.

    • @segaunited3855
      @segaunited3855 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The PS1 simply did not have the proper hardware or available VRAM to handle Sprite heavy games like Garou Dentsu Real Bout. It was TOO weak to handle.

  • @YellowSun765Z
    @YellowSun765Z 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not gonna lie, but the Dominated Mind version is the superior definitive version of Real Bout Special in my opinion, it at least had a plot and the two new characters Alfred and White along with the animated cutscenes are so awesome they make up for the flaws in this version.

    • @Silanda
      @Silanda 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was a good console but I think it came out at an awkward time: after the 3DO and right before the Saturn and Playstation. AFAIK its US launch was horribly late too. 3D was the new hotness, and it didn't help that its massive amount of RAM (for the time) was fed by a single speed drive. Some of the load times are real patience testers (Last Blade 2 is noted for being particularly horrific).
      Saturn and Playstation ports were inferior, but they loaded faster and were probably good enough for most people. No TH-cam back then to do in-depth comparisons.

    Cool port comparison and RBS is personally a favorite in this game series (the Real Bout games that is). I distinctly remember valuing the 'practice' modes available in these Saturn ports. In the days before MAME and emulation... and to be honest even as someone who owns the AES/MVS carts; this is an example of one where modes are missing. Not sure if there's even a proper VS mode in the mvs/aes versions.

    My only complaints about the PS2 port are that it seems to run at a lower framerate than the arcade and that there's forced bilinear interpolation, making the image look a tad blurry. The PS1 port is a bit weak, but it's not terrible.
    Gotta love that Game Boy version though, it really pushes the system's limits. Takara also did a great job with Samurai Spirts on the Game Boy and Ketō Transformers Beast Wars: Beast Senshi Saikyō Ketteisen on the Game Boy color, so that's no surprise. For the PS2 version, I believe the US version may be different than the Japanese version. I'm not entirely sure if this applies to the Fatal Fury Battle archives but I remember many PS2 SNK compilations and ports (Like KOF XI and Neo Geo Battle Colosseum) were based off the PAL versions instead of the Japanese versions which in general are pretty good.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      OldGraFX, well there is no PAL release of Battle Archives 2, which contains this game. The one compilation different from it's Japanese release that I can think of is Orochi Saga, which contains two more games than it's Japanese counterpart (94 and 98), a different UI frontend menu showcasing the games, and a boatload of bugs present on the US version which were not in the Japanese release (a major reason I bought it on the Wii instead, and later on got the Japanese Orochi Hen release for PS2), like slowdown, load times, screen tear, and audio bugs. I took care of the 94 and 98 needs by having KoF 98 UM and KoF 94 Rebout.

    • @RetrOrigin
      @RetrOrigin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bloodreign1 Ah gotcha, I mainly knew about KOFXI and Colosseum having bad US versions based off PAL versions and thought maybe other SNK releases suffered similar fates. I have heard also about other cases in which for some reason the Japanese ports use different emulators than the US versions resulting in cut off audio or similar bugs.
      A lot of this was discussed long ago in the Shoryuken forums so I honestly don't remember all the details.
      I personally collect MVS carts so I don't really bother too much with convertions unless there's enhancements or revisions like Rebout, KOF98UM and KOF2K2UM like you mentioned.

    IMO, I think you got some stuff wrong from two of the games featured. Dominated Mind is not a port, is kind of a soft-sequel to RBS. It has an "engine" based on the one for RBS, of course it had to be downgraded a little to fit in the PS1. The game is a marvel, it loads fast, it plays well and looks gorgeous, the voice samples don't sound that bad, I could even say that maybe it was the emulator you used to play it what gave you that bad quality. I might be mistaken, but I believe this was Alfred's actual debut.
    The second you got wrong is the PS2 version. Believe it or not, it is emulation, it is a special engine used for some of the online collection titles. It is the original ROM set on home version, I think that even the bugs are present in it, it adds some hacks though, like Alfred on RBS2. The resolution is what gives away the emulation engine used, it delivers progressive scan but it is in the mostly incompatible 240p, without a scaler, you get a blank screen on most TVs. Some titles in the online collection don't have the same engine and deliver a 480i resolution.

      Man, no wonder it's perfect. That's the trouble with these PS2 compilation discs. It's tough to know which are emulated and which are not.

      According to the US manual, it was "converted" by G1M2; the same people behind the SNK Classic Collection Vol.0 and the SNK Classic Minis for the PSP.

      @RetroCore  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm, which is it I wonder. I guess the only way to know is to check out the files on the actual disc. If it's emulated it will be easy to tell.

      @@RetroCore For this particular release, is the NGX engine. The roms are encrypted in a proprietary format, although some of them might not be encrypted (I don't have the MAME roms files to compare them at the moment) and some files might be the music archives. In the folder DISK, you'll find these roms, each set has the original NGH number as filenames, 095 for RBFF, 223 for RBSFF and 240 for RB2, it also has a BIOS.BIN file which size matches an old compressed Neo Geo BIOS file used in other emulators.
      The funny part about this is that in those NGX titles, the rom files are easier to locate. In the not-so-good SNK Arcade Classics 1 and The Orochi Saga they are compressed individually, in Metal Slug, all the games' roms are in a single file, on these titles, the roms are in a format called POD by Terminal Reality, Inc. In the Samurai Shodown Anthology, I couldn't find them at all.

    Don't be fooled by your love for Saturn,voice effects are also as low quality as Playstation's and Playstation is a great port overall with no extra hardware.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The PlayStation voice samples are far lower in fedelity than the Saturn. Play both next to each other on real hardware and you will clearly hear the difference. Also, a memory expansion is not concidered extra hardware. Even without it the Saturn still has more memory than a PlayStation. Not everything on the PlayStation is best. Especially when it comes to 2D Fighters.

      @@RetroCore As I told you in another video (ofcourse you cant remember me or any other individual),I was a big Saturn fan,I had a modchiped Saturn back in 1998 with Action Replay 4in1 cart and all that great games imported to bootleg copies,few people had that opportunity back then.And ofcourse I also had modded Psx and played so many games that youtubers now discover.
      But anyway,Saturn samples are low and cant compare to Neogeo Cds,they are just equal to Psx's.You want them better from it,thats ok,but still low quality and not arcade perfect.
      A memory expansion ofcourse is extra hardware!
      And that was a cool thing but it only justifies on Xmen vs SF,Marvel vs SF (both games wouldnt be possible with TAG mode on stock Saturn) and Metal Slug (bad Psx programming on that) were are much superior on Saturn with it.
      All others offer just minimal loading times compared to Psx and some more animations.
      Real Bout is on of them and proves that it can be cool without extra hardware.
      Ofourse even stock Saturn is more powerful on 2d than Psx,thats undeniable.
      But in the end,its not by too much,all the hype came after the extra ram carts.
      Not everything on Psx is the best indeed,but with good programming it can be great on 2d,Real Bout proved that,Metal Slug X,KOF 98,Guilty Gear,Capcom vs Snk Pro and SFA 3 among others.
      Dont underestimate Psx and dont ever think that people didnt enjoyed its 2d games back then.

      @@vasileios6301 No. The PSX is a very underpowered Console that has no 2D Hardware. It often only used 512MBs of its 1 MB of available VRAM and did all of its Sprite Rendering through software. PSX also lacked Sprite Redrawing, was incapable of animations, lacked Paralax Scrolling, and no backgrounds.
      PSX 2D games were notoriously slow, lacked scrolling, had missing animation and choppy frames and also were rendered poorly. XMENVSSF,MvC, Marvel Super Hereos,Rayman,Alundra(which resembled a High Res SNES game with missing effects).
      You're being biased because you "Played Imports" on Modchips without understanding Console schematics. And you're also devaluing the Saturn port of Garou Dentsu Real Bout Special which uses more Animations than Neo Geo and FAR more than the slow,Watered Down PS1 port.
