  • This video was taken during the Heritage Transport Expo on the 3/10/22, it follows CPH03 on train 7HR7 as it tours from Sydney Terminal to Sydenham then down Meeks road to Marrickville Junction then onto the Metropolitan Goods Line, the tour continues to Enfield and Chullora goods yards before joining the Bankstown Line once again at Sefton and return via Lidcombe and Strathfield back to Sydney Terminal. There is also a picture in picture of the Ice Radio speed display.
The Rail Motor Society, based about 50 kilometres north of Newcastle in the historic town of Paterson, comprises a group of volunteers dedicated and passionate about restoring, maintaining and operating rail motors.
Referred to as 'Tin Hares' by railway staff because they were introduced at the same time as Tin Hare greyhound racing - the 42-foot rail motors were built by what was known as the NSW Government Railways and entered service in 1923 working across the State for over 60 years.
When the last remaining 'Tin Hares' were retired in 1984, the Rail Motor Society was founded to conserve some of these vehicles.
Based at Paterson, the group operates out of the old Station Master's cottage in Paterson Goods Yard - offering visitors unique tours on board the historic rail motors, both around the local area and across the State.
The area around the cottage has affectionately been named 'The Depot' by the Society's volunteers and consists of a huge working shed and an isolated track with two carriages for crew accommodation and amenities.
Step back in time and take a rail motor tour or simply visit 'The Depot' and witness heritage rolling stock being restored to their former glory first hand.
    Museum OPENING HOURS
The Depot and Station Master's cottage are open to the public on the third Sunday of every month between 10:00am and 3:00pm. Inspections by appointment are also available.

Voice of "Bruce", is likely Bruce Gehrig. I've done videos of the ride from Dungog back to Paterson, shot during Rail Motor Society "Open Days".

did the train ran past Rookwood cemetery? I drive past that section of road once a week, the tracks ran parallel to the A3 and had overhead wires, but not the Bankstown line track. Presume some parts of the Goods line

Hi Woodland26. It doesn't run past Rookwood but it goes under the Hume hwy at chullora and briefly the A3 at 35:41 but then heads left, so doesn't run up to the Cemetery. Thanks for watching

@@trainspottingwithbarrie Thanks. Wonder what track it is that runs between A3 and Rookwood then. On Google map it comes from Pacific National Enfield yard, run past Flemington Maintenance centre and from there it could go to west side or towards the north side towards Newcastle.

Great video despite the background chatter in the cab (I would have cut this by running relaxing background music), I hit the mute button and still enjoyed the video, pity the tour didn't include a run out to Port Botany and back with a call into Cooks River for the icing on the cake. Great restoration job of the Tin Hares. Do you know of any Tin Hare video of the old passenger service from Parkes to Tottenham and back on the branch? It was discontinued in 1974, must be some Super-8 hiding somewhere, also did the Tin Hares ever run on the Oberon branch Barrie? .I see they have pulled the overhead down off the Goods Line through Enfield too.

Hi Dave, I actually recorded ambient engine sounds to go over the top but there was as much talking in that track too so decided it wasn't worth editing out each word as I have done in the F1 videos, they little bit of engine noise you can hear is worth it. You know it's funny you mentioned Port Botany, there was a steam trip a few years ago that did Port Botany, airport, cooks river and Mungo Scott sidings, I have that video ready to go just looking for a good time. There are some great photos of Tim Hares on the Oberon line in the Oberon Tarana heritage railway Facebook page from 1974, check it out. Thanks for watching.

@@trainspottingwithbarrie Thanks Barrie, looking for video of Tin Hares on Tottenham and Oberon branch, photos abound, been to the museum at Oberon a few times, I started up one of the 73 class for them a few years back they couldn't get going. Old fellows were tickled, used to go for the truck and steam traction engine day at Oberon.

The wierd thing was that there were heaps of empty seats, but I jumped on it as soon as tickets went on sale.
