    Does it get any better than watching Jay work on a 2j?
    Answer: No it doesn’t.

    The bull nose stud is a good point. An old school builder I know, used to use a small ball bearing at the bottom of the stud bore for the same reason.

    Heard the same from people pushing stock components it helps to keep the engine rpm above peak torque to help it live.

    I never even thought of cam gear wear. But i guess gnarly cams and big springs in a drag setting put big stresses

      The insane RPM change rates definitely play a big part (as you said-- a "drag setting").

    Would be cool if Toyota hired Jay to help them develop a 3JZ.

    I was surprised to see piston oil squirters! In a racing application, using a forged piston and alcohol fuels, do you still find them necessary? I always thought that directing that oil pressure to the mains/rods/head instead was a better choice. Bummer about the headgames head! I thought their stuff was very good... glad to have learned from this and not from personal bad experiences.

      Lubricating the wrist pins is always a concern. Oil squirters just work

      Headgames no hacks, but maybe not up to Jay's standards would be another way to look at it. Their pocket port has worked for me, but I did have an issue them back then, so I'm not really trying to defend them either.

      Head games stuff it is very good this at high horsepower levels anything can happen whether it takes one pass or 1,000 passes ... There are no guarantees in Motorsports

    Great video Jay.
    Whilst I understand you wasn’t thrilled with the cylinder head, what do you think caused the damage to the exhaust cam and bucket? Also the damage from the pulley on the crank? Not two step related at all is it?
    Looking forwards to more videos, especially Tim’s 4G63 rebuild.

    DLC wars? 😬 Do you think this engine was suffering valve float which has helped kill the exhaust cam dowel, lobes and buckets? Mental 2 step on exhaust side?
    I remember Headgames showing failed DLC bucket coatings on dirty taco at TX2k, but never gave a reason such as valve float, defective DLC process, mental 2 step etc.

    Wonder if high emap was causing problems on the exhaust valvetrain.

    2-part epoxy on the HG water passages you mean???

    I've only seen the wear on the cams like that from a bad valve lash, was it less than 0,5mm?

    Purely curious, way outside my means. I used to see ceramic thermal coatings used on the chamber/valves/domes of a lot of max effort NA engines i'd read about. I don't think i've seen Gold Coat used on max effort FI. Does it tend to come apart at those cylinder pressures?

    Jay did the guy who owns this piece do Honda journals on the crank?

    Arent most cams made of steel?

  • @jessekettunen102
    @jessekettunen102 22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    Seems to be an issue with some cams and specifically some cam grinds. We have massive issues with bucket wiping with GSC S2 cams in particular, when we run other manufacturers grinds they never have issues wiping buckets.

    Jay,
    if i were to use those rods on the street (no track use) at 600hp would you say they'd live for years?
    the benefits of removing all that rotating mass, lightweight valvetrain, light clutch/fly wheel and light balancer would it be possible too say a 600hp 2j might feel like an 800hp 2j..yes or no Jay?

    • @freedomfox8183
      @freedomfox8183 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      You don't want those rods Forest Street driven car unless you have deep pockets and are willing to change them often... Plenty of steel rods out there light enough to give you what you want and be more than strong enough for 600... I had a k24 with stock rods last 4 years at 500 horsepower on the street so there's no doubt

      @@GTRliffe Even if their operating at half of the intended TQ they can handle, my intuition points to longevity still being a problem. Jay runs BC titanium rods, so those are probably your best bet

  • @BoostWang
    @BoostWang 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

    Jay, do you see an issue with these billet cams on the factory cam journals?
    Part of me is still partial to GSC's profile with the powerband they offer. If the issues can be solved with a DLC coated bucket, I'm still tempted to give them a try.
    Unless someone knows something I don't, I'd like for someone to talk me out of them.
